Day 27
Previous ChapterNext ChapterMe and my sister walk down a dirt road. A knife in each of our hands, gun in its holster. I open up a pack of cigarettes, pull one out and light it. It's the middle of June and God is it hot out. Sweat clings to both of us as we trudge down the path back to our home. It's been twenty-five days since it happened. The dead coming back to life and eating the living with a hunger that can match my own right now. I haven't eaten in two days.
Once we get back we are going on a scavenging mission to the nearest store. Which, unfortunately, is ten miles away. We have enough fuel to make it there but not back. All we can do is hope that we can find some or that's going to be a long, dangerous walk. Once we got back I grabbed the keys and tossed them to Sarah. We are currently holed up in an old cabin in the woods. We are both nearly out of ammo for our guns. I've got about twenty rounds while she only has nine. We get in the car and start it up. I look at my phone and grin. On the other scavenging trip ,about a week ago, I found a solar charger that fit my phone.
That means I have music again thankfully. I turn it on and play a Song. We both smile and bob our head to the song while driving to the store. Once we get there I turn off the music and hop out the car. Sarah locks it and we both enter the store. It's a small store but it looks like it hasn't been picked clean. We open up our bags and walk to either side of the store. I look at a shelf and smile.
Sitting on it is one last bottle of whiskey. There will be good times tonight. I grab a few bottles of water that I find as well as some bags of chips. I go to see what my sister is doing when I hear a creak. I look to where the sound is coming from and see a shelf falling right on top of me. "AHH! Sarah help! I'm pinned!" I scream out in pain. I'm entirely covered by the shelf except for my head. My ankle feels like it's been sprained or something like that. I hear someone running towards me and look up to see Sarah. She looks VERY worried.
I try to push it off but it's too heavy for me. Sarah puts her hands under and we both lift we get it up a little bit before my arms give out and it slams down on me. I scream in pain as it hits my ankle again. I look at Sarah and notice something behind her. "SARAH! WATCH OUT!" I scream. She turns around and is shoved to the ground by a zombie "SARAH!" She shoves the thing off and shoots it in the head. I see more of them coming and can feel myself pale at the sight. There had to be atleast seven. The odds of us making it out are very slim. Even I can tell that. I start to cry as the situation dawns on me. I am going to die here. So is my sister. This was it, the end of my life. A surge of anger flows through me. I AM NOT GOING TO DIE BY THESE CUNTS! I push against the shelf with all of my strength. Lifting it slowly but surely.
I hear my sister start firing off rounds before I get out. I finally push it off of me just as I hear a scream. My blood goes cold. I look back at Sarah and pull out my gun. She's on the ground with two of them on her. I can see the blood. Her blood. Everywhere. I scream in anger and shoot both of them off of her. I look at her and collapse next to her. She's bleeding out. Her throat is torn to pieces. I can hear her choking on her own blood. It's everywhere. I stare at my sister with tears in my eyes.
I hug her for the last time. I put the gun against her head ,while letting out one last sob, and pull the trigger. She goes completely still and I collapse on top of her. I haven't cried this hard in my entire life. Not When my fifteen year old dog died. Not when my grand parents died. Not even when my parents died. I lay there on top of her dead body sobbing for about half an hour and lay there for another hour. Just feeling hollow. Feeling numb to the world around me. I've just lost my sister and ended someone's life. I get up and grab her revolver. I lay down next to her and grab her hand. I put the barrel to my temple and say my last words. "I love you so much Sarah. You can't even begin to comprehend how much."
And I pull the trigger.
