“Don’t you dare cry Twilight Sparkle” Rainbow Dash said angrily. Twilight quickly turned away from her marefriend, trying to hide her tears. Rainbow sighed and took Twilight’s face in her hooves. She kissed the cute purple alicorn on the nose. Twilight giggled softly. Rainbow still believed that her laugh was the most beautiful sound in the entire world.

Twilight smiled sadly. “I’m crying happy tears. You finally get to live your dream. I thought it would never happen!”

Rainbow frowned. “I know happy tears egghead, and those tears were not happy.”

The other mare sighed. “Well can I help it that I’m sad you’re leaving me?”

Rainbow punched Twilight’s shoulder lightly. “I told you that if you want me to stay I’ll stay.”

The princess shook her head. “You know I would never do that. This has been you’re dream since I first met you. You can’t give up on it because of me. I would feel terrible and so would you. My job is to make you happy.”

Rainbow chuckled. “Is this job more important than your job as a princess? Because that would be pretty scary. Equestria would die without you!”

Twilight thought for a moment. “I think this job is the second most important job. In all seriousness Rainbow Dash, this is what I want.”

The cyan Pegasus raised an eyebrow at her partner. “Are you sure? I’m sure going to miss you, egghead.”

Twilight’s eyes felt moist and her mouth was dry. “I’m sure. I love you Rainbow Dash.”

Rainbow kissed her marefriend’s forehead, before Twilight turned away. She couldn’t bear to see her fly off into the sunset.

Twilight slowly got up onto her hooves. She was gone. The tears she had held in for so long threatened to pour out. She breathed heavily. She was not going to cry.

Twilight lit her horn and teleported to the castle. One of the main reasons she missed the Golden Oaks Library was the coziness. The castle just felt big and empty, especially without Rainbow Dash. Sighing, she pushed open the doors to the map room. The memory chandelier on the ceiling looked dull. Twilight flew up to it and took a gem in her hoof. It was the memory of when they went to surprise Rainbow at the Wonderbolts Academy but ended up almost falling to their deaths due to a wild tornado. Her marefriend’s loyalty really shined through that day when she proved that she would always choose her friends, even over herself.

The alicorn hugged the gem close to her chest. A tear escaped from her eye and fell on it and the gem glowed. Reluctantly, she let it go and flew down, sitting on Rainbow’s chair.

Twilight knew being a Wonderbolt was taxing and required Rainbow to sacrifice a lot of her time. She knew there was a chance that the long distance relationship wouldn’t work out. Despite everything she knew, Twilight still held on to the hope that they could have a family together one day. She wanted this bold, loyal, and hopelessly beautiful mare to marry her. Twilight knew that one day, it would happen.

Although there was hope in her heart, there was also doubt. The logical part of her argued that with Rainbow going all over the world, she would meet a lot of ponies. She would have a lot of fans. After all, Rainbow Dash was an attractive mare. What if she…. No. Rainbow would never cheat on her. She’s the Element of Loyalty for pony’s sake! There was a small chance. There was a part of her that somehow couldn’t trust Rainbow. It was a completely reasonable fear, but Rainbow Dash would come back to her.

Rainbow Dash flew lazy circles around Twilight, who was engrossed by her latest book.

“Twilight! I’m bored” she said still flying around. “Please! Can we make out? I wanna do something pleeeeeeaaaaasssseeee?” Rainbow made her best puppy dog eyes.

Twilight shook her head, her eyes still glued on the book. Rainbow groaned before glancing at the book.

“Hey Twi? Is that ‘A Poisonous Love ’? The only other not-Daring Do book that A.K Yearling has ever written?” the blue mare asked, excitedly.

Twilight nodded slowly, still reading.

“Are you at the part when Emerald Gaze finds out that Cloudy Skies cheated on her? Emerald forgives him and they go find the killer.”

Twilight gasps. “Rainbow! I wasn’t at that part yet!”she playfully hits her marefriend.

Rainbow rubs her hoof. “Geez Twi. I’m sorry! You know I would never cheat on you right?”

Twilight smiled warmly. “Of course! You were the Element of Loyalty right? Now, you better shut your mouth and not give me any more spoilers or I’ll cut your tongue out!”

Twilight absentmindedly ran her hoof around Rainbow’s cutie mark at the top of the chair. The chair was cold but the rainbow-colored lightning bolt felt warm to touch. Maybe it was just her imagination, but sitting on the chair made her feel warm. Twilight could feel her presence. She quickly cast it off as leftover magical energy, but it also made her think about Rainbow Dash.

Twilight sighed, suddenly feeling heavy. She was tired and her body ached. Spike was probably asleep by now. The young mare slowly rose from the crystal chair to turn in. Her room was almost as big as the map room. The comforting scent of books and clean laundry hit her nose. She fell onto the bed, wrapped in her thoughts about her marefriend.

“Don’t you take our relationship seriously?” Twilight said, angrily.

“Seriously? Of course I take it seriously! I don’t know what you’re so worked up about. ” Rainbow cried.

“You hardly spend any time with me. When you do it’s always doing something YOU want. How do you think that makes me feel? You always make excuses when I make the time to be with you. Do you know how hard it is to spare some time for you?” Twilight roared.

“Really? You think you work sooo hard. I do spend time with you. I live with you for Celestia’s sake! I’m a working mare and I don’t see why it’s a problem that I can’t spend every single minute with you. ” Rainbow shouted.

“I DO work hard. I work hard to be a princess and to be your marefriend. The question is, do you work hard for this relationship? Is this another relationship you’re going to ruin?” Twilight screamed.

Rainbow looked stricken. Her eyes filled with hurt. “What?” The hurt look on her face turned to rage. “What about you Princess? You’re the princess of friendship, yet you haven’t ever been in a relationship with anypony until me!” she yelled.

The cyan mare suddenly realized what she had said and covered her mouth, but Twilight’s eyes were filled with tears. She ran to her room and slammed the door shut, throwing herself onto the bed. That was the worst fight they had ever had. She cried herself to sleep that night thinking about Rainbow’s words and her own.

The next morning, the alicorn emerged from her room to find her marefriend on the cold crystal floor next to her bedroom. She smiled a little at the cute little ball of blue fur. She summoned a purple blanket for the shivering Pegasus.

Twilight levitated her favorite lavender blanket onto the bed. Rainbow loved to roll around in it so much that it even smelled like her. A wave of nostalgia hit her as she breathed in the scent of cherry blossoms. Nopony knew that the brash cyan mare actually love the smell of cherries. After apple pie her favorite treat was a cherry tart. This information was only disclosed to Twilight so she knew the perfect anniversary or birthday present for her partner.

Twilight stifled a giggle. “You like cherries?”

Rainbow glared at her marefriend. “Yeah! Is that a problem?”

Twilight burst out laughing. “Bwahhahahha! You-haha- like cherries. Cherry blossoms? I thought of you as more of an apple fan. What about apple cider? That doesn’t have any cherries in it.”

Rainbow snorted. “I like apple cider because of Sweet Apple Acres apples. Any other apple wouldn’t do. I wonder what cherry cider would taste like.”

Twilight started giggling again. “Pfft, cherries!” Rainbow Dash pouted, folding her hooves.

The old memories made her feel hollow inside without Rainbow there with her. The bed felt cold and the blanket felt rough. “That’s what love is.” She thought with a wan smile. “You can’t live without them.”
