Fleet and Fire
"Spitfire!" Fleetfoot yelled out to her best friend. The fiery orange Pegasus mare turned around to look at the minty green one.
"Yeah, Fleet?" she asked. Fleetfoot waved a piece of paper that was flapping in her hooves at her friend's face. Spitfire's eyes widened as she noticed a bright Wonderbolts logo on it. Quickly, she snatched it out of Fleetfoot's hooves, and started scanning the text. "Oh god."
Fleetfoot's ears perked up, as she stared in confusion at Spitfire, who was busy jumping up and down, squealing like a little girl. "What is it, Spitty?" she asked, smirking slightly. Spitfire groaned.
"Didn't I tell you not to call me that?" she said. Fleetfoot giggled, as she shrugged. Spitfire sighed, and pointing towards the miniature text at the bottom of the flyer.
"They're holding races to decide the next captain of the Wonderbolts!" she said, hugging the piece of paper. Fleetfoot snorted, and nodded.
"Well, duh... I already knew that. Are you going to try out?" she asked. Spitfire immediately nodded.
"Yeah! Ever since I was a little filly, I've always wanted to be the captain of the Wonderbolts! We're already recruits! Who knows? I'd be the youngest captain of the Wonderbolts ever!" she exclaimed, as Fleetfoot raised an eyebrow.
"But what if I want to be captain too?" she asked snarkily. Spitfire's eyes widened in surprise.
"What?" she said, not moving.
"Why not? I mean, imagine all the power that would come with it!" she said, swooning in pride. Spitfire roughly shook her head.
"No! Fleetfoot! You can't! I've waited too long for this moment!" she exclaimed. Fleetfoot glanced back over to her, and quirked her eyebrows.
"And why should that make a difference?" she asked. Spitfire gaped towards the mint-coated mare.
"Oh... I don't know, maybe because I'm your best friend? Or is that just something you've looked past now?" she asked. Fleetfoot raised her eyebrows, and shrugged.
"Look, I appreciate the gesture, but... let's just stick this one to me, for now. Okay?"
Spitfire suddenly glared, and roughly shook her head.
"I can't believe this is happening..." she said. "I thought I actually meant something to you!"
"Well, of course you do. But from here on out, I think I'll only consider you as a pony who works under me. Not above."
"And what's that supposed to mean?"
Fleetfoot shook her head, and sighed.
"Right now, we're just recruits. After this race, everything will be decided for real," she said sorrowfully, patting Spitfire on her shoulder, and sliding out the door with no other gesture.
Spitfire, who was suddenly overcome with emotion, took a step back, before smirking.
"Oh... it is so on."
"Alright, recruits, take your stance!" the announcer called out, standing besides the starting line. Spitfire and Fleetfoot stepped up, and bent low.
Fleetfoot looked over to Spitfire with the huge smirk.
"Good luck, Spitty," she said. Spitfire, instead of lashing out at being called by the innocent nickname, simply snorted in response.
"Yeah... like I'll need it," she said, looking ahead with a determined glare on. She spotted the rest of her friends, Soarin, the Streak twins, Silver Lining, Blaze, High Winds, Wave Chill, plus many more recruits, who had the same goal. To become the next captain of the team.
"On your mark..." the announcer started.
Fleetfoot and Spitfire got ready.
"Get set..."
Fleetfoot shot a glance at the orange pegasus besides her.
"Go!"
And they were off.
Spitfire, who had been paying close attention to the announcer, easily got herself a head start from the other recruits. And more importantly, Fleetfoot.
Fleetfoot, on the other hand, was busy scheming up a plan from behind Spitfire's tail. She smirked, as she realized something.
Spitfire's biggest lacking ability was her endurance. Sure, she was fast, quick, and agile, but when it came to stability, she lagged behind her teammates.
So naturally, in a while, Spitfire would become tired. And at that moment, Fleetfoot could pull ahead of her, and win the title as the next captain of the Wonderbolts.
And she was ready.
Ready to steal Spitfire's glory.
The only reason why Fleetfoot was being so... brash, was because she wanted to see Spitfire fail at something.
They had been best friends for such a long time now, that Fleetfoot had begin to notice things that she might have not before. Things that could potentially be used to overshadow her.
Like they were being currently.
Over the years, Spitfire had become an all time favorite between the two of them. Sure, ponies still liked Fleetfoot, and they still enjoyed being around her. But not as much as they did with Spitfire.
Fleetfoot had never really been much of a social pony. That was more for Spitfire. So it was obvious that Spitfire would have more friends, and more of a social life than her. But now, she wouldn't stand for it.
Even in the Wonderbolts, Spitfire was taken to be a... better pony than her. At least, that's what she thought.
Whenever team captains were being chosen for simple things, like a training exercise, Spitfire was always chosen first. Never Fleetfoot, and the mint mare didn't stand for it anymore.
All in all, Fleetfoot was... jealous.
Jealous of her best friend, for being in the spotlight more than her. For getting cherished more often than her. For being an all around awesome mare to hang out with.
For being the mare Fleetfoot cared so much about.
She knew that what she was doing, would definitely cause a change in her and Spitfire's relationship. There were so many different things that could go wrong in a simple trust exercise like the one they were currently going through.
Things that could be seen as little neglectful parts, of a simple, ordinary life. Things that... other ponies didn't really care much about. Things that ponies pushed off to the side, like a piece of rotten garbage.
A slice of dignity from Spitfire's plate, was all Fleetfoot desired at that very moment.
She began to notice Spitfire's change in speed. She knew that she was beginning to get tired, and beat up from the intense work-out the two were currently going through.
She knew it was time. It was time to make her move.
Fleetfoot had a better endurance rate than Spitfire. And she wasn't feeling tired at all.
She glanced behind her, and saw that the other recruits were quite a distance away. So, she didn't really have to worry about them. It was only her and Spitfire now. An internal race, meant only for them. Them alone.
Them together.
Fleetfoot started to beat her wings faster, coming right besides Spitfire, as the two flew parallel, side by side. Spitfire glanced over to Fleetfoot, and frowned.
"About time you caught up with me," she said with a snide smirk. Fleetfoot shrugged, as the two went in for a turn.
"Thought about giving you your last taste of victory," she remarked. Spitfire narrowed her eyes into a sweet glare, and returned her focus to the race. Fleetfoot raised her eyebrows. "I know you're getting tired."
Spitfire snapped her head to the side to look at Fleetfoot.
"What?"
Fletfoot snorted.
"Oh please. I've known you since we were foals. I know your weaknesses. And I also know that endurance is one of them," she said. Spitfire's eyes widened. Fleetfoot grinned. "And I'm sure you also know that endurance was always my strength."
Spitfire clammed her teeth together, as she started to flap her wings harder, and faster, desperately trying to pull ahead of Fleetfoot.
Five laps left.
Fleetfoot raised her eyebrows, and slowed down a little, deciding to enjoy the little scene that was currently being played out before her mint figure.
Four laps left.
Fleetfoot started to remember all the good times she and Spitfire shared, and recalled the reason why she was doing all of this. To get even.
Three laps left.
She started to flap her wings faster, pulling ahead of Spitfire, who was wearing a determined look.
Two laps left.
She gazed into the eyes of her orange friend, who only returned the gesture with a look of pure hatred. Her eyes widened in realization. What was she doing?
One lap left.
Fleetfoot suddenly stopped flapping forward. She bent her inner wing feathers in, and jolted her joints out, pushing her body to a stop, just in time for Spitfire to cross the finish line.
Without her.
"Feetfoot, what was that?" Spitfire asked as she walked into the mare's locker room. It had been empty for quite a while now, as the other recruits had already finished their after-race showers. Fleetfoot looked up from where she was sitting, and frowned.
"What do you mean?" she asked in fake confusion. Spitfire frowned.
"Why did you let me win?" she asked.
"What are you talking about? I never let you win! I just... got tired!" Fleetfoot insisted. Spitfire raised her eyebrow, and shook her head, sitting down besides her friend.
"What's going on?" she asked. Fleetfoot sighed, and leaned onto Spitfire's shoulder. Spitfire's eyes widened, as she realized what she was doing, but nevertheless let her continue.
Fleetfoot bit her lip, and suddenly looked away.
"I'm sorry," she said. Spitfire's ears perked up.
"What for?" she asked.
"For being so jealous of you..." Fleetfoot said softly. Spitfire jerked back in surprise.
"Why would you be jealous of me? If anything, I should be jealous of you!" she exclaimed.
"It's just that... you're so perfect. You always get all the attention. It's never me! Ever..." Fleetfoot said. Spitfire gazed guiltily into her best friends eyes, as she roughly shook her head.
"Fleet... that's not true! You know that's not true!" she said. Fleetfoot furrowed her eyebrows.
"No. It is true. And you know it. No matter how much you try to hide it, you've noticed it as well. It's not only me, ya' know? You do remember that I'm your best friend. I know these kinds of things before they actually start to show. In this case, from you," she said. Spitfire's eyes filled with tears, as she pulled the mare in for a tight hug.
"Fleetfoot, I'm sorry you've been feeling this way. Why didn't you just tell me? You know you can tell me anything!" she said, as tears started to flow freely from both mare's eyes. Fleetfoot sniffed.
"Yeah... I guess, with something so majorly personal, I just couldn't bring myself to telling you. And I'm sorry about that," she said. Spitfire nodded, as she slowly pulled away from the mare's grasp.
The two Wonderbolts gazed at each other intently, finally being able to see each other from the perfect angle. Spitfire looked upon Fleetfoot's dreamy gaze, as she slowly inched closer to her face, Fleetfoot doing the same.
Before either of them knew what was about to happen, Spitfire and Fleetfoot's lips touched each other's in a soft kiss. Both squeaked in surprise, but soon melted into the utter bliss it provided them with.
Fleetfoot rasied her hoof to gently caress Spitfire's cheek, as Spitfire moaned into Fleetfoot's mouth. Both displayed passion that they had been holding back for most of their lives, never wanting to stop.
Spitfire's tongue rolled beneath Fleetfoot's bottom lip, begging for entrance, which Fleetfoot gladly gave. The two engaged in a rough tongue battle, fighting only for dominance towards the other.
Spitfire then wrapped her hooves around Fleetfoot's body, as Fleetfoot's free hand moved to Spitfire's back, rubbing it with anticipation. For what, she was unsure still.
All that she knew, was that she never wanted this moment to disperse.
