Tree of the Nothing

There is a tree in the Everfree, which under no circumstances should you ever approach. Its charred black bark bulges from centuries of stagnate expansion. It sucks up water and life from the ground but has never flowered and will never bear fruit. The gnarled branches spread out from the center like the ruined web of a dead spider and stretch up like macabre hands threatening to swallow the sky. Though cracked and marred like the fragile remnants of burned wood, all the branches sharpen to a deadly point at every end.

You can’t tell if it’s the just the forest canopy or the sheer density of the tree, but not a speck of sunlight reaches the ground below it. As you approach it you’ll notice that the grass and moss typically covering the forest’s floor is absent. In fact the tree exists in a unnatural bubble that appears separate from the rest of the forest. The absence of vegetation forms a dark circle around the tree’s circumference, like an unholy fair ring which no animal, branch or any form of life dare encroach upon. Despite the lack of sunlight, it casts a shadow in all directions, its shade reaching out, straining almost desperately. Underneath all the fear and discomfort it projects there is a subtle, but far more sinister feeling; a pull. Simple curiosity, out weighs all feeling of foreboding you might have, it beacons to you like the hook to an unsuspecting fish. Imagine just going up and touching it, there can’t be any harm in that, *now could there*?

You won’t know why, but you will start to move forward. And as you do, the mindless attraction only becomes stronger. You will step over the imaginary circle and feel the lifeless earth under your hooves. You’ll barely notice as everything begins to fade, away. The tree will take up more and more of your vision, your sight bends until there is only a black tunnel between you and it. Your movement slows as your muscles become more lethargic. It is as if your hooves are filling up with sand, but you don’t notice because you can’t feel them anymore. Or perhaps time itself is slowing?

You have reached the event horizon.

You can longer feeling the ground under your hooves which you once galloped across so freely. Nor can you feel the biting chill of a winter eve

Nor the heat that you once shared so passionately with another.

You can’t feel anything.

Any sounds of the forest have long since died, but now the sound of your breath and of your own heartbeat are fading too.

Thump-thp… thump-thp… thump-thp… thp…

Fading until all that is left is the sound of silence, before that too is eventually silenced as well. It is only your mind now that is floating through seemingly endless space. Time has become irrelevant and the tree has become them. Your mind questions the them. But then you realize that there had never been a question, all you know are them, you have never known anything other than them. Gone are the memories of golden gates and luscious gardens through which a filly ran and played and laughed and swung. There are no more libraries, no more books, no more friends and no more magic. There is only THEM. And now YOU are THEM and THEY are US.

You should have believed the tale. Should have been scared of us like the fillies, or have forgotten us like the ponies. Would you have us believe that you had never heard the ancient tale, now only an old mare’s tail:
