My Little Pony: Dinosaurs Are Magic
Bill Redwood
Previous ChapterNext Chapter-Gates of Canterlot-
The old, bearded stallion pulled a large cart behind him. The wagon was heavy from the many logs loaded into it's bucket frame. With a effortful grunt, Bill Redwood set the cart to rest momentarily.
The lumberjack lifted a hoof and banged on the large gates of Canterlot.
"Good morning, Bill." a familiar voice said, approaching the gates with a cheery smile. It was none other than Canterlot's Star Swirl. Known throughout the land for his powerful magic.
"Mornin'." Bill replied as the unicorn opened the door for the cargo carrier.
Bill Redwood was a stallion who was well known in Ponyville for his strength with an axe and his reliable structural advice. He was the oldest of three brothers, though neither were spoken of often and both had died. The pony's friends called him Red and he often wore a trademark red, plaid shirt with mismatched buttons, the result of wear and tear. A black, trucker's mustache concealed his lips and a shaggy beard covered his chin. The stallion was widely respected by Ponyville's residents, though he had had a few skirmishes in the past.
It was then that the faint memory of two, tough young ponies floated to his conscious. Though hazy, he remembered his youngest brother having two foals.
Unfortunately, Bill Redwood was a hard working stallion, and rarely got to see the growing ponies. And when his brother died in an accident, Red never visited the two brothers' auto shop in Manehattan.
With a sigh, the lumberjack hauled the load toward a wood frame toward the side of Canterlot's gardens, where he found a young pegasus mare. "Hey. Kid, I'm not sure that you're supposed to be around here." Bill said, haphazardly lowering the cart to the ground.
"Oh! I-I'm sorry! I didn't know!" the light brown pony said in a startled tone, swiftly swinging around to face the axe wielding stallion with a surprised expression.
"Don't soil yerself, Kid." Bill said, turning to grab a wooden pillar off of the cart. His face formed that of concealed pain as he tossed the log onto a pile, causing the teenage mare to jump.
"Did you need any help?" the pony asked, noticing his pained expression.
"Sure." the stallion replied, arching his back. With a pop, Redwood relaxed and turned to another log. "You got a name?" the lumberjack asked as they worked.
"Obsidia." the pegasus replied with a sigh.
"What's wrong?" he asked, looking around as if something would turn up.
"It's my father. He's in the hospital at the moment because he randomly grew butterfly wings. So now I can't see him until he wakes up." Obsidia replied glumly.
"Well... MY family is DEAD. So there's a mouthful for ya to take in." the stallion said with wide eyes. "Name's Bill Redwood. But you can call me Red." he continued, holding up a hoof to the pegasus.
Obsidia smiled and graciously shook his hoof.
A low, long howl rode the wind and rested upon Bill and Obsidia's ears. "What is it?" the pegasus asked, cowering behind the lumberjack with a worried expression.
"Timberwolves." Red growled, pulling a large, double headed axe from a strap around his shoulder and poising it for a battle.
As if to prove his answer, a large Timberwolf slunk toward him, it's ranks of splinter fangs bared as it approached the two ponies with a wild look in it's eyes.
"Run." Bill whispered at Obsidia, not taking his eyes of of the creature as several others followed close behind. "Now! Go!" he commanded as the first wolf leapt toward him.
With a war like cry, the lumberjack swung his axe at the creature with full force. Splinters of wood were flung into the air as the Timberwolf yelped and shrieked in pain.
The other wolves, seeing their gasping, fallen comrade, uttered a series of furious growls and bared their teeth.
"Let's see what yer made of." Bill Redwood growled as the creatures sprang toward him. The muscular stallion swung his axe and called after the pegasus these words. "TELL YER DAD I SAID HI!!"
With that, the Timberwolves piled on top of the pony, excited barks, howls, and yelps filling the air.
-Inside Canterlot-
Obsidia sprinted down the hall, her wings held out slightly as she raced to find somepony who could help Bill Redwood. A deep voice called after her with slight worry. "Obsidia?!" Rex called after her. The pegasus screeched to a halt, allowing Rex to almost see the smoke coming from her hooves.
"Oh, thank God!" she said, trotting toward the tyrannosaur.
"What's the rush?" the large unicorn asked with a confused expression. "You look like you just saw a pack of Velociraptors." he exclaimed, looking her up and down.
"I need your help! There's a pony... He's being attacked by Timberwolves! You HAVE to help him!" Obsidia panted.
"Where?" Rex asked sternly.
"This way!" Obsidia said, leading him down the long halls.
-Canterlot Gardens-
"There he is!" Obsidia cried, watching in horror as Red desperately tried to escape the gnashing teeth of the Timberwolves. With a defensive growl, Rex teared towards the creature's his jaws unhinged and ready to taste blood.
"I haven't eaten anything good in days." he growled as he went. "These should be satisfying."
With that, he clamped his jaws around a wolf's leg and thrashed his head. The Timberwolf yelped in pain as Rex threw the green eyed creature against the castle walls.
The other wolves turned on the large stallion and leapt onto him, their jaws clamped onto his legs, neck and back. Rex furiously bucked the ones attached to his legs away and furiously bellowed a real Tyrannosaurus Rex roar. The Timberwolves leapt into the air with their ears flat and scrambled away, their tails tucked between their legs.
Bill Redwood leaned against his viking like axe and shot a pink glob of phlegm to the grass. "Thanks." he muttered, placing his axe back against his shoulder in it's leather strap.
It wasn't anymore than a few minutes before he collapsed under exhaustion. Obsidia trotted toward the stallion with a worried expression. "We gotta take him to the hospital!" she told Rex, grabbing the unconscious pony by the hoof and trying her best to hoist him up. "A little (pant, pant) help here?" she gasped.
Rex rolled his eyes and effortlessly hoisted the lumberjack onto his shoulder.
-Through The Mirror-
The kind hearted King Sombra gazed up at his opponent with wide eyes. The unicorn stallion before him snorted with rage and his eyes leaked red energy. The grey unicorn stood his ground as the large pony lifted his lips, exposing ranks of large, dagger like fangs.
Sombra calmly approached the furious stallion with a stern expression. His opponent was covered from head to hoof with scars and wounds. One side of his body was severely burned and still sizzling from King Sombra's energy blast. The unicorn's left eye was missing, though not because of King Sombra, and a long jagged gash ran up the side of the dark pony's head.
The good king wasn't of any better. His legs and back were covered with bite marks and bruises. His royal blue cape was filled with holes that let of small streams of smoke and his armor was dented and scratched.
One Eye uttered a menacing snarl as the king approached him. Almost instantly, the evil stallion winced in pain. King Sombra cracked a small grin as his opponent squinted his good eye.
The mirror tyrannosaur had had just about enough of the stubborn unicorn. Though the majority of his wounds were not caused by King Sombra, the ones that his opponent HAD dealt were not helping him any.
"BACK off!" One Eye snarled, baring his teeth in a threatening display of predation. Rather than head his warning, King Sombra marched toward the pony with a defiant smirk across his face. "I said BACK OFF!" the large unicorn boomed, lashing out at the king with a series of kicks and bites.
Sombra managed to avoid each and every one of the attacks.
One Eye, in a desperate attempt to stop the stallion, furiously charged him and clamped his jaws on the unicorn's neck. Sombra yelled in pain as the tyrannosaur pony thrashed his head back and forth.
With an angry growl, One Eye released, sending the unicorn slamming into a rocky wall. King Sombra gasped for breath as the opposing stallion stomped toward him with an enraged scowl crossing his scarred face.
"There can only be one king..." One Eye growled, lifting a hoof above Sombra's head with a triumphant smirk crossing his face. The grey unicorn stallion struggled to rise back up, but could not. With a loud roar, the tyrant brought his hoof down on Sombra's head...
-Canterlot Medical Wing-
Obsidia nervously stared down at Bill Redwood with a worried expression. She then glanced at her unconscious father, resting in the bed beside Bill.
With a sigh, the light brown pegasus let herself fall to her haunches.
Rex, noticing her expression, snuck up behind her. "Rawr!" he whispered in her ear, causing her to flinch. With a chuckle, Rex wrapped her hooves around her and lifted her into the air.
Obsidia loudly laughed and beat her wings. She then playfully dove toward the stallion, her hooves in front of her, and pinned him to the ground.
"NO! My one weakness!" Rex joked, playing dead. "I'm... dying!" he pretended, dropping his head to the floor.
Obsidia chuckled to herself and lifted her hooves from his chest, allowing him to sit upright. "I thought flares were your one weakness?" she said, raising an eyebrow.
"Are you kidding?" he laughed. "You're just as... no... Twice as beautiful as one!" he exclaimed, planting a kiss on her forehead.
"You missed." Obsidia said, pulling Rex's head toward her with a giddy smile. The large stallion smiled, for he knew what was coming. He chuckled.
"You gonna just make me suffer in wonder or can we like... do what you had planned now?" he questioned, lifting her chin with his hoof and looking her in the eye.
Obsidia chuckled at the words and kissed him on the lips. Rex smiled and wrapped his arms around her.
"Aw... You guys are so cute together!" a voice exclaimed. Both Obsidia and Rex swung their heads in unison and looked up to see Onyx smiling down at them. "I don't now how I hadn't seen that earlier." he grumbled, sitting upright.
The light brown pegasus grimaced as the two ponies lifted themselves off of the floor. "Who's that?" Onyx continued with a quizzical expression on his face. He pointed to the old stallion next to him.
"That's Bill Redwood. He saved me... well, Rex did most of it, but he initially saved me." Obsidia told her father. "So! How's the wings feeling?" she asked.
"Alright, I suppose." Onyx replied with a slightly disgusted look on his face. "Bill Redwood, eh?" he continued, changing the subject before it got awkward. "I feel like I know that name somewhere. He certainly looks familiar, that's for darn sure... What did he save you from?" the father then asked Obsidia.
"Timberwolves, I think he called 'em." she replied.
"Nasty things." the stallion growled. "Well... 'Bill' certainly looks like a woodworker."
"He is, I think. Kinda funny. You'd think a dog made of wood'll run away from a lumberjack." Obsidia chuckled softly, gazing at the bearded pony with a concerned expression.
It was then that Bill Redwood woke. "Ugh. What happened?" he asked, holding a hoof to his forehead and wincing in pain as he sat upright. Red looked himself over with a slight look of disgust showing on his old face.
"Red!" Obsidia exclaimed, jumping in joy.
"You act like you know this guy." Onyx said, staring at the light brown pegasus with confusion. He then turned to the lumberjack. "Onyx. It's nice to meet you. Thank you so much for saving my daughter. How can I repay you?" he said with a smile, lifting a hoof.
"Bill Redwood... Pray don't mention it." Redwood replied, shaking the stallion's hoof with that reassuring old stallion smile. "You look familiar. Do I know you?" he then asked Onyx with a quizzical expression.
"I don't believe so... A Redwood, eh?" the moth winged pegasus said slowly, processing the words.
"Who's your father?" Bill asked. "Do you have a brother?"
"I feel like I know your name somewhere." Onyx exclaimed, ignoring the lumberjack's question. "Sorry! Yes I have a brother... As for my father... he's dead." the stallion said, correcting his manners.
"I had a dead brother." the wood worker said, jumping to his hooves. "Ow." he growled, wincing in pain and siting back on the bed. "Was your father, by any chance, Steel Redwood?" he continued.
"Yes, why?"
"I think we're related." Bill said with a serious tone and expression.
