The Prime Minister's Spear
Fourteen thousand years have passed since the Heavenly Dominion fell.
A few thousand years later, after the rise and fall of many lesser empires, ponykind had banded together under the Treaty of High Valley to form the nation of Equestria - a country that would last a fourteen hundred and two years.
Who could have known how those last twenty years would play out? Would they have changed things? Certainly the Orion Council wouldn't have trusted her, much less have involved themselves the way they had. They should have been skeptical, after all, they were barely trusted each other after the War...
Maybe they would have, knowing what would happen when she died. Knowing what would occur for six long years. But... It didn't happen that way.
People died for ideologies, for control. Families torn apart, lives irrevocably obliterated...
Maybe it was fitting to have done what they did to end it.
They must have known their successors would face challenges far more meager, and far more gargantuan, than they would ever live to see. But they trusted people enough to get by.
Today's the first day I keep that trust, lest it ever fade.
In the aftermath of the Human-Covenant War, the fledgling Sanghelios Parliament of Keeps would make a tenuous alliance with the United Earth Government through the Orion Council, an organization that would grow to hold members of every major sentient species throughout the Orion Arm of the Milky Way Galaxy.
That alliance was put to the test in what historians dubbed the Equestrian Affair, a twenty-year long debacle that began with the accidental discovery of a pocket dimension home to a sentient species of equines, amongst others. It should have ended in a productive new member of the Council, after all, the Orion Council found themselves constantly defending their Equestrian allies, and securing the nation against those tried to invade it. It instead all unraveled when it was revealed the Council had been duped: the Princess they wanted to try was murdered by a human faction, the Paladins, who vied for power over a world ripe for the taking. Hell would reign for six long years as the Council desperately tried to establish a new government, but the conflict would not end on their terms. No, it ended on the terms of war criminals, the very leaders of the factions that had led to the massacre of hundreds of thousands of lives now realized they could never gain total victory over the others. Gritting their teeth and joined forces in a new government that called itself "The Lunar Domain."
Four hundred and twenty-six years have passed since then, and in that time fifty Prime Ministers have succeeded the first. Now, on a warm April morning, the fifty-first Prime Minister shall cede his office to his successor, a young earth pony by the name of Corporal Phalanx Spear. With the nation embroiled in civil conflict in the Changeling Territories, a brave new world internationally, and bogged down in a Parliament that divided on the implications of funding what has effectively become a monopoly, one can only hope that this newcomer to the political game can rise to the mantle he won by a meager eleven thousand vote margin.
So, this is the sort of spiritual counterpart to a series I've done over on NationStates. This series, which I'll also be posting there, is the tale of politics in a world far removed from our own, and yet at the end still facing some of the same old issues that we do today. Make no mistake, while this is most certainly a version of our old pals in Equestria, their timeline diverged (I'm scummy on this by saying "The timeline didn't really diverge since the aliens and stuff are just off camera in this case.") effectively when a strange minotaur was found dead that authorities would never be able to identify, as instead of that minotaur going and nearly taking over the world, the world started unravelling.
Anyways, it's been a long time. I've come back with tales to tell.
