Chapter 1 Visions in The Night

The wind had been howling and the moon had been full, as an adolescent dragon slept under this starlit night. Spike had been restless, tossing and turning left and right, he searched for sleep but it would always evade him. He was trapped in a nightmare that felt surreal.

Spike could not tell if it was real or false, but what he saw was horrifying. He had been witnessing a battle between warring dragons; the blood of both parties splattered on the earth, the battle had been vicious and gruesome, soon after he saw the scene of battle. The scene had changed to a mother and father dragon looking over their egg, the mother dragon had blue eyes and purple scales. Where, the father dragon had gold eyes, with white scales.

However the parents were not looking over the egg with love, but dejection, when suddenly a door in the dragon den burst open. Another dragon soon entered the room with a malicious grin on his maw. The father dragon engaged the other dragon in an attempt to fight it off, but Spike did not see who the victor was. The scene had changed too fast; it was now a vision of Ponyville under attack from strange fiend like creatures.

The land became dark and desolate of life, Ponyville was lost, blood rain began to fall, and Spike saw himself standing in the midst of it all, words began to echo around him.

The voice had been repeating in a mystical tone. “The one who must change destiny must follow the path of hardship. Through the test of time, he must withstand. All is lost without this one who will rewrite a future set in flames.”

Before spike could respond to the voice, the world was engulfed in flames, and he was soon surrounded by a wall of fire. Out of the flames, dozens of strange fiend like creatures appeared. Before he could even attempt to fight, they were already upon him.

Spike woke up panting heavily, and in a cold sweat. “What a nightmare, Luna has no mercy,” Spike thought.

Something came to Spikes attention. The voice he heard in his dream came back to him, reciting the same phrase, once more. Spike had a feeling like something bad was about to happen, he felt disturbed by the emotion he had been feeling but he disregarded his feelings of foreboding doom. Instead, he noticed that it was still late at night, he saw Twilight peacefully asleep, with Flash Sentry beside her, embracing her lovingly.

Twilight and Flash had been together for some years now, and flash had managed to climb in the ranks of the royal guard, eventually becoming a general of the guard, surpassing Twilights brother. As the years progressed; Flash and Twilight had grown close, so close that after their wedding previously.

Twilight had become pregnant; she was going to have a colt, a male alicorn no less. When Twilight told Celestia about her pregnancy, she had no idea how happy this declaration would make her old mentor. Though Twilight thought it was extreme, Celestia had planned with Luna and Pinkie to make it the biggest baby shower in the history of Equestria. The reason the two sisters did this was because it would be the first male alicorn to be born in the history of Equestria.

Spike was also elated, and he remembered how he smiled when he found out he was going to be a theoretical uncle to the prince of friendship. Although he had happy thoughts, Spike could not shake the daunting phrase out of his mind. It had been stuck on repeat, he could not sleep, he could not concentrate, but he soon found out why he was feeling disturbed.

Spike was shaken from his thoughts of nostalgia when Suddenly an explosion of flames erupted outside the castle, causing Flash and Twilight to abruptly wake up. Spike ran to the window located across the room, and saw the same fiend like creatures that he saw in his dream, marching towards the castle.

There had to be at least 200 in the distance, it was a formidable army of ugly abominations with razor sharp claws and blood stained tattered cloth clothing. The smell had been so foul that you could smell it on the outskirts of Ponyville, where the castle had been located. Leading the army of fiends was a giant black dragon. Death was thick in the air.

Spike sprinted to the Armory of the Twilight guard, hastily donning, his silver armor and sword ready to fight off the army of fiends. After he was armed, he charged to the front line with the Twilight Guard. Although Spike was a skilled swordsman, Spike had always known, when he charged into battle there was always a chance that on the other side of the fray there could be someone far more skilled. Spike had been more nervous than he had ever been. He had no idea how to fight these things, let alone kill them. They looked like death and smelled of it too.

“How can you kill something, that’s already dead?” Spike stressed as he thought.

Spike had been shaken from his thoughts, when he felt a reassuring claw on his back, melting his anxiety away, it was his girlfriend, Princess Ember. She had moved to Ponyville to be close to spike, before allying her dragon clan with Princess Twilight.

Spike and Ember had been dating for a few years now, and their relationship had prospered. Though the challenge Embers father gave Spike was against his true nature. To win over Torchs’ approval Spike had to beat Embers suitor that he had selected for her, in a gladiators style match. The first one to die would win his approval, and he would gladly accept him into their family and clan, as the next clan leader. It just so happened that Embers betrothed, was the one dragon she hated the most; Garble.

Spike did not want to kill garble, but he loved Ember too much to let her marry a tyrant like him, Spike took his life, although he knew that he would be haunted by his death for years to come.

“Spike, you’re the future clan leader, you cannot show weakness, bring pride to our clan. Show the world that the blue dragon order is not to be trifled with, and after you kill everyone I’ll have a very special gift for you, you know how battle makes me feel.” Ember purred yearningly.

Although Ember was confident in her mate, she hated to see Spike fight. She knew Spike was not like the rest of her clan, and although she would not admit it, she worried about him, whenever he drew his sword. Spike and the 50 guards went into battle ready to face what lay in front of them. They joined the fray in a glorious charge, sword, claw, and talon, clashed together.

Spike engaged three fiends at once; he parried the first claw before sliding his sword underneath the claw of his attacker, causing it to loose balance briefly, before wheeling around beheading 2 of the three around him, and executing the third by stabbing it in the chest. The fiends dropped to the ground and turned to dust.

He hacked and slashed through the hordes like butter, the Twilight guard did the same. Once they defeated the first 50 that attacked them, they moved forward with the momentum of battle heading towards Ponyville. Spike looked around, and noticed that discord had engulfed Ponyville, some ponies had already died, and were being eaten by the fiends. The royal guard from Canterlot had been pushed back and were being slaughtered by the dozens.

Spike charged fourth with his elite guard, saving four of the royal guard from being eaten, but as he was finishing off the last of the 6 fiends, he noticed Rarity being attacked by a dragon with red eyes and black armor.

Rarity had been at the mercy of the dragon, that merely blocked her bolts of blue magic she cast to defend herself. Rarity had accepted her fate, Spike felt resolved to save her. The large black dragon began to rear his razor sharp talons to deliver the killing blow.

Spike yelled. “No!”

and within an instant, he was engulfed by white magic, that teleported him in front of the black dragon.

The black dragon had become confused at first, however, he was not as confused as Spike, who had been trying to figure out how he teleported without the help of a unicorn. The black dragon broke out of his confusion as he realized, that this was the little dragon that he had been searching for. He swiped at Spike with intent to kill.

Spike saw what was about to happen, he drew his sword knowing it was pointless to stop the blow of the black dragon. As Spike blocked the blow, his sword was sent skittering across the battlefield. Spike now had no weapon, and his armor had been too damaged to offer too much protection. Spike knew that this was his last stand.

He saw the black dragon preparing to attack him again; he closed his eyes, his thoughts went to his friends and his love. Spike knew his end was coming. As the black dragon landed his attack a white shield suddenly blocked the fatal blow.

The black dragon looked at spike with frustration and began to attack again, but was stopped by a blast of gold magic, and standing behind Spike and Rarity, was Celestia.

“Be gone Keselth, you have no power here!” Celestia stated with a tone of regal authority.

as she did the sun began to rise, turning the fiends to dust, temporarily blinding Keselth before he adapted to the light. Keselth had felt weakened from Celestia’s power.

“I may not be strong enough right now Celestia, but I have awoken, and I will take over this world; and you young sage dragon, my brother was wise to hide you, join me nephew. Let me train you in the sage arts.” Keselth stated, with a menacing grin before extending a claw of mentor ship to Spike.

Spike did not like how this dragon made him feel. When Spike had been in his presence he could feel a shroud of darkness lingering around him. He knew that if he were to join this dragon it would certainly mean the death of his friends, lover, and the destruction of his home.

Spike replied with a tone, devoid of fear. “I am not a sage dragon, I am a dragon! Heir to the throne of the blue dragon order, and I will not join you.”

Keselth became infuriated, he let out a vicious roar that made the ground tremble.

Keselth replied. “Then you are weak like your father and mother, they also tried to fight, but they died protecting you! Be grateful for this young Sage, I will be back, and when I come back I'll show you all the meaning of power.”

Soon after Keselth finished speaking a flash of white light temporarily blinded everypony and dragon alike, and Keselth had seemingly disappeared, leaving nothing but a burnt spiral in his place. After the event, Spike had fainted, and became unconscious.

While Spike was unconscious, he saw the same dream that had been repeating in his mind for the last few months, it was always the same result, waking up in a cold sweat, panting heavily. Spike woke to find Ember waiting by his side followed by Twilight and Flash. Twilight was the first to notice Spike was awake and out of breath.

“I’m so glad you’re ok. I was worried about you Spike, but not as worried as Ember. She will never admit it but she really loves you. She did not sleep all night, she only just fell asleep recently.” Twilight stated with relief.

“What exactly happened, I can’t remember, I just remember seeing Rarity and the feeling of urgency? Then after that everything is black.” Spike Stated.

Ember who heard her beloveds’ voice woke up, and immediately locked him in a passionate embrace. Spike embraced her back, but then Ember broke the embrace and cleared her throat, then said. “I’m glad you are ok. I thought you might have been too weak to be our clan leader.” This made Twilight chuckle at Ember, which caused Ember to grow indignant, and fly out of the room.

“I’m glad you’re up brah, you gave us quite the scare.” Flash Sentry stated coolly.

Spike remembered something as the memories of the battle came flooding back to him. “THAT DRAGON, HE KNEW ME, HE KNEW MY PARENTS, I MUST FIND HIM,” Spike stated excitedly, as he was about to rush out on his vendetta. He did not get very far when he was engulfed by a purple aura.

“Spike! he vowed to kill you, I won’t let you leave!” Twilight stated in a furious, yet worried tone.

“I agree, Young dragon! You need to know your background first! Come with me.” Celestia chastised.
