I lie here beaten, broken, and battered unable to move lest the pain increase, with a gut wound that runs clean through my body. I feel the life draining from me as I'm slowly enveloped in darkness.
You're probably wondering how I ended up in a situation such as this. Well, for me to tell you that I would have to start from the beginning.
My name is Nightshade and I was born on the second era year 1253 of planet Equuis in Canterlot to a noble family. At first my grandparents weren't too keen on my parent's union, but soon came around when I was born. My grandparents were what you would call traditionalists. They believed ponies shouldn't marry and or mate outside of their perspective races, but my mother, being a unicorn, decided to fall in love with a Pegasus. When her parents found out, they all but abandoned her.
When my grandparents found out I was born a unicorn they started to be a bit more open to my mother, but still resented my father for stealing my mothers' heart. I was born with a pitch black coat as well as a silver mane and tail. But the most notable feature was the white that surrounds the iris of my eyes were black while the iris was a bright golden yellow. Now there is a bit of a history of ponies who have had eyes like mine and it's not particularly good. Because of these eyes almost everypony I meet always had that disgusted look on their faces, as if I made them watch as I killed their dog. I was also faced with the not so friendly peers at school, teachers and students alike. Because of this my parents and grandparents decided that it was time for me to learn self-defense magic with my mom teaching me spells and my grandfather teaching hand to hand combat and mental discipline .
The training was really intense and at the time I was only 6 years old. My grandfather would wake me up at ungodly hours of the night and train in the backyard until sunrise. My mother, after breakfast, would teach me defensive spells until it was time for dinner. They would alternate every other day as to not over exert my body as well as let me catch up on any sleep I may have lost. This went on for a year and a half before my parents decided i was ready for school, and I entered the second grade.
I endured hell from the students and teachers, I would regularly be bullied and beaten just for minding my own business. I never talked to anypony during my first year at school, I usually kept to myself by wrapping myself in a book, but somepony always found me and they usually wanted to hurt me all because I was different from them. That was until the third grade came around when we received a new student about half way through the year. That morning our teacher was later to class than usual and upon her arrival she looked like she had just ran a marathon.
"Class, I have an announcement. A new student will be joining us from now on and I expect you to treat her with as much kindness as you do your fellow classmates." She turns toward the door, "You can come in now", said Mrs.Rose Heart
From the door I watched as a young unicorn filly entered the room, she had a dark blue coat and a lighter shade of blue for her mane and tail as well as a thick black jacket on with matching pants. She stood at the front of the class and introduced herself.
"Hello everypony its very nice to meet all of you, my name is Luna"
As all of the seats were unavailable at the front of the room the only seats that were not taken were towards the back of the room where I normally sit. When she walked to the back of the room I'm not sure if it was out of sympathy or what but she decided to sit by me instead of by herself. She stared at me with curiosity in her eyes."Yes? Is there something something I can help you with?" I asked.
"No, I'm just wondering why you have black eyes?"
"I was born this way; it's okay if you don't like because of them I'm used to it." I turned my head away from her ready to receive any harsh comments that may come my way.
"What? Why wouldn't I like you just because of your eyes? That's just ridiculous."she replied
At first I thought she was messing with me until i turned and looked at her. She had the same look of concern that my mother would have when she's worried about me.
"You really think so?" I asked her
"Of course" she sounded somewhat offended that I would question."I think anypony who judges a book by their cover don't deserve to have any friends at all, and besides who wouldn't want to be friends with you?
"Nopony has ever said that to me, they all viewed me as beneath them like I was nothing."
"But you are something, nopony is nothing because we all serve a purpose in this great world of ours."
"Well if I do have a purpose then I haven't found mine yet"
She reaches out her hand towards me, "My name is Luna what's yours"?
I'm taken aback by her sudden act of kindness towards me and hesitantly respond with my hand in kind. "My name's Nightshade."
"It's a pleasure to meet you Night. It is okay if I call you Night, right?"
"Yeah night is fine."
It suddenly dawned on me, I finally made my first friend.
Later that day during recess Luna decided she wanted to continue hanging out with me, so we settled on playing on the swings while taking turns on pushing the other. This continued for a while until we were approached by a couple of students from our class. "Hey Luna why are you hanging around that freak when you could be playing with us?" Said one of the kids in the group. "Yea, you really shouldn't be associated with the likes of him."
"Well what if I am? He hasn't hurt me or anything." Luna retorted back at them.
"Doesn't matter , he isn't normal I mean look at him! Name one pony who has the same eyes as he does. And besides my dad told me not to trust anypony who was born like he was." One colt said as he stepped from the group and glared at me.
"Who cares if wasn't born like everypony else, and besides he's really nice better than any of you are being right now!"
Why was she defending me? We only just met a couple hours ago.
A couple of the colts in the group started snickering, "You really think he's being genuinely nice to you?! Everypony knows that anypony with eyes like his can never be trusted. Once they earn your trust they'll turn on you on an instant without hesitation."
Their words hurt and as tears began welling up in my eyes, I lost control and couldn't hold them back any longer.
I got up and ran, all the while I hear laughter and the shouting of Luna telling me to stop. I don't know how far I ran but I do know that when I stopped I passed out from shear exhaustion and heard the echoing of Luna's voice getting closer as I slipped into darkness.
