Chapters Nutmeg Music woke up staring at his ceiling. He thought today was going to be just another day. Just another day with the pony he loved. He couldn't have been more wrong. A soft coo from the other side of the small bed startled him and he flipped over to see those gorgeous amethyst eyes staring up at him.
"Hi sweetie" Twilight Sparkle said.
"Hey Twi" he said back.
They shared a tender kiss, those always made him feel better. In fact, just being with Twilight made the whole world seem...worth living through for Nutmeg. He had a dark past. A few bad friends in high school, drugs, cutting, had all led him dangerously close to that tantalizing cliff of just throwing it all away. But then, SHE had happened.
They met in chemistry class in the 10th grade. They had been unwillingly partnered together for their first project. It was simple enough: put a chunk of solid sodium in water and watch the "reaction" Nutmeg being the curious pony he was, decided he wanted a good view. He got a little too close and when the sodium hit the water, BOOM, it basically exploded. He jumped backwards, and landed right in Twilight's arms. They looked deeply into each other's eyes and it took off from there.
Their wedding had been, as Rarity had put it "simply marvelous!". It was held in Canterlot and was no less grand then her brother's had been a few years before. Not a mishap to be found and many of the ponies there considered themselves lucky as many had been at Shining's wedding also. But enough about that, your trusty narrator is going off topic.
Nutmeg had been wanting to ask Twilight a very important question for a while now. What he didn't know was Twilight had been wanting to ask him that same question but neither of them had the guts to do it. It was a BIG question after all. They both thought they knew of a way to do it so they would. TONIGHT.
The day started normal after that amazing kiss. Nutmeg hauled his red behind out of bed and stretched out allowing his long, thick, dark brown mane to lazily flop over his face. He knew Twilight would be attending to her royal princess duties today, whatever they were. It could be anything from solving a territory conflict between animals to overseeing the construction of a new farm. Whatever it was, she always said she was up for it. He knew she was a strong pony but he also knew everypony had their limits. He suspected she was reaching her's.
Well, he had a job too. He worked in the Ponyville spell factory, manufacturing spells. While that may sound like fun, it was just ponies pulling different levers all day to print some text on paper, put it all together, and ship the spellbooks out the door. The work was MIND NUMBING. It took all his strength not to just pass out at his station every day.His dream job was busting clouds but he wasn't a pegasus so he knew that goal was nothing but a dream.
He knew he had to leave soon. It was already 8:45 and he had to be there by 9 so he gave Twilight one last kiss on the forehead, told her goodbye, and trotted out the door to the factory. He thought walking would get his mind off things. For the second time that day, he would be wrong. His mind kept going back to that question. Thoughts started racing through his head.
What will she think of me? Will she feel the same way? The worst she could do is turn me down, right?
Then a very, VERY scary thought hit him.
Will she still love me?
He knew he would have to put those thoughts off until tonight, he had to if he wanted to focus at all. Not that he needed to focus.He galloped into the factory just on time and grabbed his outfit which was just a dark blue jumpsuit with his name Nutmeg patched on the chest in red cursive letters.
"Back to the old grind"
Meanwhile, across town, Twilight was having similar thoughts. She was in the middle of trying to figure out a way for an owl and a squirrel to share the same tree. But her mind kept going back to that question as well, and all the other thoughts about Nutmeg came with it.
What will our lives be like if he said yes? What if he feels different? The worst he could do is turn me down, right?
Ten a very, VERY scary thought came to her.
Will he still love me?
She knew she had more pressing issues at hoof and would have to deal with those first. What she didn't notice in her deep thought was that the owl had eaten the mouse to get the tree to itself. She watched as the last of the mouse's pink tail was slurped down the owl's throat like a spaghetti noodle.
"Meh, problem solved."

The beginning (of the end)
The day got to that glorious hour. The hour of 5. That awesome hour where Nutmeg got off work, and Twilight would usually be heading home from her latest daily adventure.
Nutmeg walked outside and looked at the amazing deep oranges and pinks of the setting sun. He started making that short trot home and on the way he saw the Cakes and their foals. Looking again at the sun meeting the horizon, he could imagine him as the sun and Twilight as the horizon. All those thoughts that had plagued him earlier in the day came rushing back.
Again trying to block out these thoughts, he reached his front door and took one last look at the sun, which was just sinking below the hills in the distance. Taking a deep breath, he walked in, expecting to be the first one home. He thought he would have some time to plan out his strategy for asking Twilight. But, for the third time that day, he was wrong.
Walking into his bedroom, he saw Twilight in the cutest saddle he had ever seen her in. It was pink, with a fur lining and studded everywhere. She looked just... he was basically at a loss for words. Standing there, his mouth hanging wide open, he watched as Twilight's sweet smile melted off her face.
"You...you don't like it, do you?" she said tearing up.
"No! No Twi, it's just...what were you doing?"

Having no clue what she wanted, Nutmeg simply asked "Yeah?"
"I was just wondering if...if..." she looked like she was trying really hard to get something out. She looked and the ground and said no more.
Nutmeg brought his hoof up onto her chin and lifted her head back up to stare into her big purple eyes.
"Twi, it's me, you know you can tell me anything, I'll love you no matter what."
That was the confirmation that Twilight was looking for.

"Goodnight, mommy. Sweet dreams."
As Twilight drifted off to sleep, Nutmeg was, for once, finally at peace. He didn't have a worry in the world. Giving Twilight one last kiss on her forehead, he too drifted off to the land of dreams.

Nutmeg trotted down the stairs to see Twilight cooking some eggs and sausage, a small bulge on her stomach. He quietly sneaked up behind her and wrapped his hooves around her.

"I just...I don't want you to leave me today."
Ever since pretty much all of Ponyville had found out Twilight was pregnant, they insisted she stayed home and have everything done for her. Honestly, she didn't mind but it was starting to get a little boring and with Nutmeg gone the whole week, she just couldn't keep herself busy. She had her books but with those crazy mood swings that came with being pregnant, she found it hard to focus on one thing for a long time.
"I...I don't have to go in today Twi. If my mare wants me here, then that's exactly where I'll be. Let me just give my boss a call."
"Thank you"
A small quick kiss and they parted Twilight going back to her eggs and Nutmeg making for the phone. After a quick chat with Mrs. Treasure, Nutmeg went back to the living room to turn on the TV. Twilight was already on the couch, enjoying a hearty helping of eggs. She patted the cushion next to her. Nutmeg grabbed some eggs and a piece of sausage and found Gravity Sponge, their favorite cartoon, on.
The two ate mostly in silence, the occasional chuckle from one of them at the cartoon's ridiculous dialogue. They both finished at the same time despite Twilight starting with much more. Nutmeg began to wonder how far those cravings would go before they subsided. But, before he could continue with that train of thought that was bound to lead no where good, Twilight broke the silence.
"I really think it was sweet of you to stay home today."
"Who am I to deny the most beautiful mare in Equestria such a simple request?"
She scooted closer to him and rested her head on his shoulder.
"I've been kind of bored here without you, you make my life a lot more...interesting." she said with a purr.
"Twilight, you have one day with me, what do you want to do?"
"I have a few ideas" she said giving a mischievous smile.
The day beyond that was a blur to Nutmeg. He remembers the mall and a lot of new dresses and shoes that were way too big for Twilight now but he knew in the next few months, she would grow into them. He remembered dinner at the best restaurant in Ponyville. The amazing daisy and grass sandwich and the even better hay cream afterward. Finally, he was walking back to the house with Twilight wrapped up in his jacket. The cool night air blowing through his light brown ruffled mane. The crickets and the frogs going about their nightly business. Luna's moon shining down on them in an abundance of silver light. Twilight's warm body pressed against his, and her soft mane brushing along the side of his face. But as they were walking, one real, clear thought came through his head.
All these stars and the night sky and the trees and just everything tonight is gorgeous. But,
Looking down he said
"Twilight, you are the most beautiful thing out here."
"You really think so?" she said tearing up.
"Twily, you'll always, no matter what I see, be the best thing I've ever laid eyes on.
She started softly crying tears of joy into his chest at that comment. He pulled her closer as they kept walking and Nutmeg, even though he considered himself a strong pony, let a single tear run down his cheek.Twilight felt it hit her muzzle, and looked up. She saw the tears in his eyes and cried a little more.
Approaching the house, Twilight collected herself as best she could and looked over to Nutmeg.
"Nutmeg, I'll be a good mother, right?"
He gave her a peck on the cheek and smiled back at her.
"The best."
She smiled back at him and gave a small nod.
"Thank you for saying that, I love you."
"I love you too Twilight, and don't worry, I know i'll make an awesome father.
She gave a small chuckle and they finally reached Nutmeg's house and walked inside to fall asleep together on that oh so comfortable bed of his. They laid down and Twilight was almost immediately out. Nutmeg could understand, she had been all over Celestia's creation today. He gave her another kiss on the cheek and a content smile formed on her mouth. He made his way down her purple form and kissed her belly, too.
"Night you two, I love both of you so much."
He wrapped his hooves around her figure and slipped off to a deep sleep.

Twilight woke up groggily and tried to sit up in bed. The warm sun rays coming through the window felt good on her skin. She then felt something a little less good, a sharp pain from inside her told her her foal was awake.
"Good morning to you too, sweetie."
She rolled out of bed and stretched out, letting her wings flap a few times splayed out. She walked to the stairs and was just about to put a hoof down the first when she missed. Her mind flashed a quick "no" before she went head first down the stairs. Thankfully, that didn't happen. Nutmeg had just walked out of the new room they had been prepping for the foal when he saw her slip. Diving toward her, he was able to grasp her tri-colored tail with one hoof and pulled her back from a nasty fall. She spun around to face her lover/savior and gave him a kiss.
"Geez Twi, if the doctor would have said pregnancy made you a threat to yourself, I would have done more than foal-proof the house."
"Wow, did I really almost do that?"
"Good thing for you I played baseball when I was a colt so I know how to make a diving catch."
"Thank you." she said with another small kiss. "So, how are things coming along in there?"
"Fine, I've done just about all I can without knowing colt or filly."
"Oh, really? Let me see."
She turned her nose up at him with a slight snort and trotted inside. She was expecting nothing done, being as she knew Nutmeg as a typically lazy pony. She was so wrong. There were toys all put into a new brown, amethyst studded chest they had bought. There were rattles, a jack in the box, tiny trains, and even a mini boneless doll that Pinkie had let them have. The walls hadn't been painted yet because that was something they wouldn't do until after they found out the gender. Even then, Twilight wasn't too sure they would be able to agree on a color scheme.
Lastly, there was the crib they had bought. The carousel above the crib was dangling with nothing on it. They had decided if it was a filly, they would have little ponies and a colt, rocket ships. Nutmeg walked in and saw Twilight looking around in amazement.
"See? I can get stuff done."
"This...this is amazing. You did THIS, by YOURSELF, in a WEEK?"
"Well, between those times where I wasn't stopping you from falling down the stairs."
"Ha ha, very funny. So, ready to go?"
"Ready when you are."
"I'm ready but...I'm nervous Nutmeg. Weird, right? A princess like me, afraid of the doctor."
"Hey, It's your...our first foal, every mare has a right to be scared for something like that. Trust me, I'm nervous too."
"You don't show it."
"Of course not! I have to stay strong for the one who I know really needs the support, you."
"Well, you do a spectacular job. Thank you." she said with a smile.
"So, ready?"
Twilight took a deep breath.
"Ready."
The doctor's visit went without a hitch. Their foal was as healthy as ever. Neither of them told the other one but they had both been secretly hoping for a filly. It looks like whatever higher power ruled over Equestria had heard them because it was indeed a filly. Twilight and Nutmeg couldn't be happier at that news. They walked back home through the twilight.
"This is just...I can't even find the words."
"Perfect?" suggested Nutmeg.
"Yeah, that word comes closest."
"Hey, I have a surprise for you."
"Oh do you now?" Twilight said sarcastically.
"Eyup and the best part is, we don't even need to be home for it to happen!"
"What are you talking abo woah!"
Nutmeg picked Twilight up and pulled her close to him as he kept walking.
"What are you doing?"
"You've been on your hooves all day and if my research is correct, you pregnant mares are particularly sore there."
"You're kidding right? You? Doing research?"
"Hey, I can be smart sometimes...especially when it comes to my mare."
She gave him a kiss on his neck.
"Well, your research would be correct and this is just what I needed."
"I thought so."
Twilight eventually fell asleep in his arms and he carried her the rest of the way home. All Nutmeg needed to keep enough strength in his hooves to hold her up was her breath on him and the slight movements of their foal he could feel through her. Finally reaching their front door, he managed to get it open with one hoof. He got Twilight up the ever-dangerous stairs and gently laid her down on the bed. He crawled in next to her and got comfortable.
"Goodnight Twilight, I love you." One last kiss, and Nutmeg was once again in the land of his subconscious.

The time was drawing near. Nutmeg began to psych himself up to get ready for this. He didn't know if he was ready but Twilight, who was originally the one who needed reassurance, was there to tell him he'd make a great dad every day. He just happened to be off with Twilight in the market when IT happened.
"Okay, Twi, what do you want?"
"Tell you what, I made a list of all the stuff I need..."
Nutmeg rolled his eyes at that comment.
"So, I'll go get all the stuff I need and you can go get all the stuff you want. Easy peezy." she said with a smile.
"Alright, where do we meet up?"
"Hmmmm" she pondered for a moment. "Meet me in front of the apple cart in an hour."
Nutmeg wrote it down as he was quite a forgetful pony.
"Got it Twi, one hour." he gave her a quick peck on the cheek "See ya then."
One hour later Nutmeg had everything he could EVER want. You name it, it was in his bag. Oranges, celery, lettuce, carrots, peaches, bananas, but he still needed one thing: apples. He purposely left them for last because he was meeting Twilight there. But once he got there, Twilight wasn't there. He waited a little longer but still Twilight didn't come. He really got worried now as Twilight was usually quite punctual. He decided to go home thinking Twilight had done the same and was probably waiting for him on the front porch with a stupid look directed at him. But when he got home, he found his worst fears confirmed.
Sticking out of his mailbox was a single envelope and when Nutmeg opened it, his heart almost stopped. It read:
Cheerio Nutmeg! It's your old friend Discord! I was just writing to let you know that Twilight's with me now...yeah...this must be hard for you huh? Doing anything to protect her and now you can know you failed...miserably. So if you want to come and try to save her, we're in the old 2 Sisters castle in the everfree. I'm sure I'll be seeing you soon ;)

Nutmeg reached the edge of the forest before long. He took a look up at the trees and a thought blew threw his head.
"I...I've never been in here alone."
Twilight had always been here to guide them but now he hoped he remembered enough of the way to get back to the castle. As he went forward, the inky blacks and the dark green of the trees seemed to swallow him whole. He reached a fork in what little of a path there was. He dug back in his mind to think which way Twilight would always go. He remembered the one time he had gone with her to Zecora's. He clearly remembered going to the left when they had gone there because he remembered how creepy Zecora was. With this knowledge, he went right.
He continued until he came to a raging river. He had learned a spell last night that could call old friends to your side. So who else would Nutmeg call but Steven Magnet. His horn glowed with a powerful light and in a flash the giant purple dragon was by his side. By the looks of it, he had been enjoying a nice relaxing spa visit.
"Now what did you do that for?" he said seeming very annoyed. "I was just about to start my massage."
"Sorry Steven but can you help me across?"
"Why should I help you after you yank me from my spa and dump me in such an awful place like this?"
"Well, A: I can just send you right back after I'm across and B: I need to help Twilight--
"Twilight needs help?! Say no more!"
He scooped Nutmeg up and plopped him on the other side of the river. Staring deeper into the forest, Nutmeg saw the ruins of the two sisters castle in the distance.
"Thanks Steven, don't know what I would have done without you."
"Happy to help, now you bring Twilight back safe and sound, OK?
"I want her back more than anypony else, believe me when I say I will get her back.
"Go get 'em!"
With that, Nutmeg took off, tearing through the rest of the brush getting more than a few thorns in his coat on the way but it didn't matter. Nothing did. He didn't care that he was stuck with thorns, he didn't care his hooves were aching, he didn't even care that his the bridge going across the gorge looked kinda rickety. All he cared about right now, was bashing Discord's deer antler in, ripping off his bat wing, and taking by that snake tail and...and...
He didn't know what he would do but it would be something not E rated. Stepping precariously onto the bridge, he tried to not be as fat as he knew he was. When that didn't work and the bridge creaked more and more, he ran it all the way to the end. With the bridge collapsing behind him, he barely got his two front hooves on the other side before the whole thing was gone.
Pulling himself up, and dusting himself off, he looked down as the bridge fell...and fell...and fell
"Great, just perfect."
Approaching the castle, it was just as big and crumbling as when he had been here with Twilight before. Trotting through what was left of the front gate, little chips of stone falling from the walls, he didn't have to go far to find who he was looking for.
"...what you want?! HUH?! Answer me you little bitch!"
Nutmeg could hear Discord taunting Twilight and he knew she was strong and wouldn't give in to mere words.
*WHACK*
The sound of a whip cracking and Twilight yelping shot right to Nutmeg's very core.He tore down a hallway towards the sound. He could hear Twilight softly crying from the next room.
"You just want me to kill him when he walks in?!"
Peeking around the corner, Twilight saw Nutmeg but Discord didn't notice.
"What should I do Twilight?"
"Well, right now Discord, I want you to shut up!"
Taking this as his cue, Nutmeg sprang and fired a blast of magic fire right at Discord but he quickly dodged.
"Well, well, well the famous Nutmeg I have heard so much about you."
"What did you do to her you monster!?"
"What? I can't just be expected to result to extreme measures when trying to get some information?"
Taking a good look at Twilight, Nutmeg noticed she had multiple bruises all over her and a little dried blood sprinkled through her coat. Simply put, she was not looking good and seemed to be getting weaker as she tried to stand up only to fall back down.
"YOU...YOU..."
"Me what Nutmeg? Going to rip my throat out or something?"
"No, much much worse."
Discord fired pure chaos blasts at Nutmeg as he continued dodging and fired back with his own blasts of every element he could find a book on. Fire, ice, water, air, rock, and pure magic spears of light at times. Finally, the two set down facing each other with Nutmeg in front of Twilight and Discord on the other side of the room.
"Well, it appears we have a sort of draw here don't we Nutmeg?"
"I"ll make you a deal you son of a bitch." Nutmeg growled at Discord. "Let us go and NEVER let me see your ugly mug again, and I'll let you live...barely."
"Ooooooo, gee that's a toughie. I'm gonna have to think about that one. Hmmmmmmmm...no."
Firing the biggest blast he could muster right at Nutmeg, Discord was sadly disappointed when Nutmeg generated up a mirror shield that deflected the shot right back at him. With no way to defend against his own magic, Discord was swallowed by the blast and disappeared in a flash into nothing. Nutmeg could only hope that he was gone for good.
But the rocking of the spell caused the castle to shake apart, and as Nutmeg turned back around, he watched in horror as Twilight was crushed under a bunch of falling rocks.
"NO!" screamed Nutmeg.
As he used that adrenaline to lift all the rocks off Twilight, he picked her up, placed her on his back, and took off in a full sprint threw the debris falling all around him, towards the castle entrance. Knowing he didn't have long to get to Ponyville to save his Twily.

Charging back through the rest of the everfree, Nutmeg broke free of the bushes and finally got a breath of really fresh air. He let Twilight gently roll off his back so she was laying on the ground. She looked up at him with those big purple irises and put a hoof to his cheek.
"My hero."
"Twi, you listen to me. You WILL live through this because I have seen you get out of so much worse. You WILL live because I need you, Equestria needs you, and and...I LOVE YOU TWILIGHT."
She gave him a small smile and closed her eyes.
"Twi? Don't do this to me Twily, you HAVE to be okay."
Tears in his eyes, Nutmeg picked Twilight back up and rushed as fast as he could right into Ponyville. He stood still, panting like a dog, sweat and blood dripping down his flank. The world around him was going black and far away he heard a scream that was no doubt Rainbow Dash.
"HOLY CELESTIA! NUTMEG, WHAT THE BUCK HAPPENED?!"
"Need...help.........Twi...
Nutmeg's world went black and he knew no more.
He started awake and looked around to find himself in the hospital. He started panting again and began to think back on what had happened when he remembered.
*GASP* "Twilight."
Spike, who was sitting on the chair just outside his room heard him stir. He walked in to find a groggy Nutmeg who looked like he was getting over a really bad hangover.
"Hey everypony! He's awake!"
Before Nutmeg knew what was happening, five ponies were right on top of him, what remained of the elements of harmony.
"Oh my, um you don't look so good Nutmeg." Fluttershy said with concern.
"I'm fine just tell me-
"OH MY GOSH! Nutmeg what happened with you and Twilight?!" Pinkie cut in.
"I'll tell you later but-
"Nutmeg just what in Equestria were you thinking?!" Rarity interjected.
"What I was think-
"Mah, mah, I haven't seen a pony this beat up since Big Mac got one of mah apple trees to fall on 'im." Applejack said.
"GIRLS!"
Everypony went dead silent.
"I will be happy to tell you everything that happened later but right now tell me one thing. Is Twilight okay?"
Everypony's faces immediately took on a look of utter horror. Fluttershy let out what was barely a whisper.
"N-nopony told you?"
"I'm real sorry sugar cube but Twi, she...she..."
The farmer trailed off so it was Rarity that spoke up.
"Twilight never had a chance, by the time they got you two here, she was already gone.
"Nuh...No. That, that can't be true. It just can't!"
"I'm sorry Nutmeg but what Rarity's saying is the truth." Rainbow spoke up.
"But...but"
Nutmeg put his head in his hooves and started to sob, something he realized he hadn't done for a long time. He didn't even hear everypony leave and he layed back in his bed and thought once again that his life was nothing. And now, the one thing that he thought DID matter in his life, wasn't in it anymore.
Fluttershy flapped back into his room.
"Hey shy. How long since you girls left?"
"We've been out there for about an hour."
"Seems like only a few minutes. heh, crazy right shy?"
"What is?"
"You think you have years and years left with somepony but suddenly...you don't. I don't know shy. Maybe tomorrow I'll go hang myself, at least I'll be with Twily then. I let her die, after I told her nothing would ever happen to her.
"Nutmeg, you can't blame yourself for this. You did everything you could."
"I just can't help but feel like I could have done more, like I could have saved her somehow. So, what's happening out there shy?
"That's why I came in here. We figured you could use some good news."
Nutmeg shed another tear. "What could be good about this?
"Well, Twilight might be gone but the doctors WERE able to save your daughter."
"Wha...WHAT?"
"Yep. They found her abdomen wasn't harmed much and she was still alive inside her."
"Wh-where is she now?"
"In the nursery with all the other foals, totally healthy."
"Take me to her." Fluttershy hesitated. "NOW SHY."
"You um really shouldn't be moving yet."
"Then help me. I NEED to see her."
Nutmeg heaved his body up to a sitting position and with Fluttershy under one hoof, he started making his way through the halls. His mind was spinning. He couldn't believe either of these things had just happened but he knew it wouldn't sink in until later. He turned around a corner and saw that famous glass panel to look into the foal's room. It was very late at night so nopony was around. He reached the window and only looked for a minute before his eyes locked on the filly he was sure was his. He found his new reason to live.
She had his light brown mane with the Twilight's pink and purple streak through it. Her coat was the same lavender as Twilight's with a tail that was Nutmeg's color. Her eyes were her most amazing feature. One was Nutmeg's dark brown while the other was Twilight's deep purple.Nutmeg let out a deep sigh of content.
"My little Gem."
"Huh?" Fluttershy asked.
"Twi and I had a name picked out for our filly. Gemmed Moonlight."
"That's beautiful. I'm happy for you Nutmeg
"Yeah...crazy day."
Nutmeg went home a week later carrying his filly in his hooves. He nuzzled her gently and enjoyed every soft coo she made. He approached his house and memories came flooding back. Of Twilight, of long, late nights at work, and of the best years of his life. He pushed the door open to find nothing had really changed. He carried Gem upstairs and gently laid her down in her crib.
"Sleep well sweetie." He gave her a kiss on the head and slowly closed her door. He went down the hall to his own room and flopped onto the bed, completely exhausted. It was here that his thoughts were able to reach him again and he let a few more tears fall. He didn't know weather to curse the world or worship it. It had taken Twilight from him but it had also given him the most amazing little filly ever.
His thoughts kept going back to one conversation with Twilight he had a long time ago. With that thought he wiped away his tears and sat up knowing this world could try but he would prevail. Their conversation went a little something like this:
"Nutmeg, if anything were to ever HAPPEN to me-
"Hey don't talk like that Twi. Besides nothing bad will happen to you if I have anything to do with it."
"But if it did, you would keep going right? You would push on without me?"
"Twi...I...I-
"Just promise me you would keep being you and being amazing even if I wasn't here."
"Cross my heart and hope to fly, stick a cupcake in my eye."
