//-------------------------------------------------------// Sock Hop Sonata -by ArtisanScribe- //-------------------------------------------------------// //-------------------------------------------------------// Sock Hop Sonata //-------------------------------------------------------// Sock Hop Sonata The air was cool on a quiet autumn afternoon. Everything was calm and peaceful, but there was excitement in the atmosphere. The local high school was hosting their annual sock hop, and the neighborhood was bustling. In a little house near the end of the street lived three sisters. They called themselves the Dazzlings, a name that was most likely chosen by the eldest sister, Adagio Dazzle. Adagio and her younger sisters, Sonata and Aria, were known to cause mischief around town since the first day they arrived. However, no one ever suspected them. The girls' enchanting voices made them practically invisible to the people who weren't busy admiring them. The one who was most excited about the sock hop was sweet, Sonata Dusk. Sonata, believe it or not, was the most innocent of the three. Despite being a hate-leeching monster from another dimension, she was a bubbly, yet slightly airheaded young girl. She wanted to go to the sock hop more than anything else in the world. All she wanted to do was have fun, but her older sisters thought otherwise. "C'mon, Dagi, pleeease!" Sonata pleaded, for the tenth time, almost. "No, Sonata, and that's final!" Adagio replied. "That's not fair!" Sonata whined. "How come Aria gets to go out with those biker boys?!" "Uhh, because I'm older, that's how." Aria sneered. "Plus, she doesn't get into monumentally huge trouble and nearly blow our cover like SOMEONE does!" Adagio returned. "Aria does that, too!" Sonata shot back with a pout. "That may be true," Adagio stated. "But she's not that big of a problem." "But..."Sonata began again. "No more buts!" Adagio snapped. "It's late, and it's almost your bedtime." "It's only 5:30!" Sonata complained. "Bed. Now!" Adagio ordered, pointing up the stairs. As Sonata angrily marched up the stairs, an idea popped into her head. She turned back to Adagio with a coy smirk on her face. "Hey, Adagio, what if I went out and got some magic on my own?" she called. Adagio and Aria only glanced at each other before they both burst out laughing. "You? You're gonna go out and get magic?!" Aria said between laughs. "That's rich!" "You can't be serious, Sonata!" Adagio said. "But, we'll humor you. Go to the diner and get as much magic as you can." "Really?!" Sonata said, rising to her tiptoes in excitement. "Yeah, sure," Adagio said dismissively. "Take as long as you need." "Yay! Thanks, Dagi!" Sonata cheered and raced out of the house. "So, how long until she comes running back, crying like a baby?" Aria asked. "I'll give her about five minutes," Adagio snickered. Sonata skipped happily down the road. She went right past the diner and made her way to the high school. She came to a stop at the gymnasium doors. She was a bit nervous, but at the same time; she was excited. She took a deep breath, straightened her bubblegum pink poodle skirt, and stepped inside. The gym was already filled with music, dancing, and laughter. Sonata's heart jumped in excitement as she made her way to the dance floor. The swinging music filled her ears, and her feet seemed to move on their own. She knew that Adagio would be angry with her, but she didn't care. All she cared about was dancing the night away. Just then, from the corner of her eye, she saw a young boy sitting alone in a chair that sat against the wall of bleachers. He wore a simple white collared shirt, a black bowtie, blue jeans, and a pair of brown suede shoes. Black glasses covered his dark brown eyes, and his dark brown hair was slicked back. He sighed sadly as he looked amongst the dancing students. Sonata felt a tug at her heartstrings. Normally, if Adagio were here, he would have been the first target. Mainly, to Aria's fists. With a smile, Sonata skipped over to where the boy sat. "Hi!" she chirped. The boy gasped in shock and nearly fell out of his chair. He looked up at Sonata fearfully. "My name's Sonata!" Sonata said. "What's yours?" "D-Dot...Dot Matrix..." the boy replied shakily. "Please, don't hurt me." "Why would I hurt you?" Sonata laughed. "I just wanted to know if you wanted to dance." "Dance?" Dot asked. "You mean, dance dance?" "Yeah, c'mon!" Sonata said, taking Dot's hand. Sonata and Dot made their way to the dance floor, despite Dot's protests. Dot Matrix stood in the middle of the dance floor; glancing awkwardly at all the other dancing students. "What's the matter?" Sonata asked. "Why aren't you dancing?" "I...uh...can't dance.." Dot sadly confessed. "That's alright; I can't either!" Sonata said. "The music just moves me, y'know?" Sonata then took Dot's hands and started twirling him around. It started out as an incredibly awkward version of Ring-Around-The-Rosie, but then, Dot's feet began to move in time with Sonata's. Their feet twisted and turned in sync, and Dot felt a sense of confidence wash over him. He started doing his own version of the trending dance, the twist; adding spins this way and that. Sonata stopped dancing and looked at Dot. She was impressed, but she had to giggle at how funny he looked. In the spur of the moment, Dot took Sonata's hands and began twirling her around as she had done to him. The two were having so much fun that they didn't realize the crowd that had gathered around them. "Well, well," a voice rose from the crowd. "If it ain't Dolt Matrix." Dot and Sonata stopped dancing and turned to see a tall boy with greasy navy blue hair walking toward them. He wore a black leather jacket, a white undershirt, blue jeans and black boots. Dot sighed. "Oh great, it's Flash," Flash stepped up to Dot, having to look down on him due to his height. "Looks like you finally got a girl to dance with ya," he laughed. "I'm surprised you ain't weirded her out yet. Speakin' of which, she's kinda cute." Flash shoved his way past Dot and stepped closer to Sonata. "You're a groovy little chick," he purred, placing a finger under Sonata's chin. "Whaddaya say you and me go steady?" Sonata just looked up at Flash confusedly. "Leave her alone, Flash," Dot said defensively. Flash chuckled and turned away from Sonata. He had a malicious glint in his eyes. "Why don't you make me, Poindexter?" He stepped closer to Dot. "Oh, that's right, you can't, and you never will!" Flash shoved Dot to the ground; knocking his glasses off of his face. Before he could step on them, Sonata piped up. "Hey, you big bully! Pick on somebody your own size!" "Heh, stay outta this sweetheart," Flash replied, keeping his back turned. Sonata's fists clenched tight. There was no way that she could take on this brute with her bare hands, but she knew that there was another way. Sonata cleared her throat and began to sing a soft melody. Her pendant began to glow a dim red. The sound reached Flash's ears, and he froze where he stood. Flash silently walked toward a nearby trash can and dove in headfirst. The entire gymnasium broke out in uproarious laughter. Sonata completed her song and turned to help Dot. He dusted himself off as Sonata handed him his glasses. "You okay?" Sonata asked. “Yeah, but...how did you do that?” Dot asked. “Well, I have my ways of getting people to do what I want,” Sonata said with a small smirk. She caressed the crimson pendant around her neck, then as she turned back to the dance floor, Dot grabbed her hand. “Wait, l-let’s go somewhere else,” he said nervously. “I don’t wanna be here when Flash gets out of that trash can.” Sonata nodded and followed Dot outside to a small red car. It was a bit rusty in places, but it looked presentable. Dot got in on the driver's side while Sonata sat beside him on the passenger’s side. “So, where are we going now?” Sonata asked. Dot reached into his pocket and pulled out a few dollar bills and some spare change. "I don't have much, but I was planning to go to the drive-in," Dot replied. "Hope you don't mind Lady and the Tramp." Sonata gasped in glee. "I love Lady and the Tramp! That's my favorite movie!" "Really?" Dot said. "Yeah, my sisters think it's a baby movie, though," Sonata replied. "Let me guess, older sisters?" Dot asked. "Two of them," Sonata replied with a roll of her eyes. "Jeez, sorry to hear that," Dot said. "Aw, don't be," Sonata said. "I still love them." Dot smiled at that. He admired Sonata's optimism, even in the worst situations. Looking back at Sonata, Dot noticed how her raspberry eyes shimmered in the moonlight. He also noticed that she had a beautiful smile. A light blush formed on his cheeks, and he shook his head. With those thoughts in mind, Dot cranked up the car and drove off to the drive-in theater. Adagio and Aria sat in the living room watching television on their couch. Adagio's knee bounced frantically as she bit the nail of her thumb. Aria looked over at her elder sister with a bored expression on her face. "What's wrong with you, Adagio?" she asked. "You worried about the idiot?" "No," Adagio replied. "I just didn't expect her to take me seriously!" "Come ON, Adagio; it's Sonata!" Aria said. "You can hardly expect anything from that little ditz!" "I know, but she could have called or something!" Adagio cried. "She SHOULD have called!!" "You're starting to sound like Mom, ya know..." Aria snickered. "Well, I feel like one!" Adagio shot back. "Especially when Mother went searching for you after you got yourself stuck in that reef." "Touche," Sonata and Dot Matrix sat in the car as the movie played on. In between the two of them sat a large bucket of popcorn. "Ooh, this is my favorite scene!" Sonata said. This was the most famous scene in Lady and the Tramp. Lady and Tramp were sharing a plate of spaghetti and meatballs. As if on cue, Sonata began singing along to the song 'Bella Notte'. Dot could only look on in surprise. He had never heard a voice sing so beautifully. Sonata sang every note on key. She knew every word by heart. Dot's heart thumped wildly in his chest and his blush deepened. As the song came to an end, Sonata sighed contentedly. "I just love that song," Sonata said. "You have an amazing voice," Dot whispered. Sonata already knew this, but a very faint blush crossed her cheeks. No one had ever complimented her singing if they weren't under her spell. She liked this feeling. "Where did you learn to sing like that?" Dot asked. "Oh, I guess you could say I was born with it," Sonata shyly replied, caressing her pendant. Sonata then reached for the bucket of popcorn just as Dot was doing the same. Both gasped as they felt their hands meet. Shyness overcame them, and they remained silent until the movie ended. The drive home was just as awkward as the movie had been. Dot and Sonata kept to their internal thoughts. Sonata knew that she would be in a world of trouble when she got home; especially if Adagio and Aria saw her with a boy. About five blocks away from her house, Sonata told Dot to stop the car. Dot obliged. After a prolonged silence, Sonata finally spoke. "I had a really great time tonight," she said. "Me too," Dot replied. "I'm glad I met you. Maybe....we could do this again sometime..." Sonata was about to jump at the chance and say yes, but then she remembered her sisters. "I'd love to, Dot, but my sisters and I will be moving soon," Sonata said sadly. "We never stay in one place for too long..." "Oh, I understand," Dot said, disappointment clearly showing in his voice. "Well, will I ever see you again?" "Maybe, someday," Sonata replied, exiting the car. "Thanks again for the ride." "Wait!" Dot cried and ran after Sonata. After he had caught her wrist, he placed a small, white corsage on it. He held her hand gently. "Promise you won't forget me?" he asked. Sonata nodded. Her vision was becoming blurred as she tried to keep herself from crying. "You won't forget me will you?" Sonata asked. Dot chuckled. "How could I ever forget your cute face?" Sonata giggled and suddenly felt warm hands upon her cheeks. Dot leaned closer to Sonata, his eyes slowly closing. Sonata followed suit and soon, the two found their lips meeting in a tender embrace. Fireworks went off in Sonata's mind. This was her very first kiss, yet it saddened her to think that it could also be her very last. She wanted it to last forever. Dot pulled away from her as Sonata wrapped her arms around his neck. She glanced back at her house for a second before returning to face Dot. "Let's stay here...just a little bit longer..." Sonata whispered, and moved in to kiss Dot again. This moment was magical, and neither of the two wanted it to end. Sonata thought about leaving Adagio and Aria behind and running away with Dot, but her conscience told her that her sisters needed her. Finally making her decision, Sonata pulled away from Dot for the last time. Her fingers intertwined with his, this serving as their final connection to each other. "Well, I guess this is it," Sonata said sadly. Sonata bit her lip, trying to fight back the tears. "Don't cry," Dot said. "I know we'll see each other again. I'll keep an eye out for you." Sonata smiled, and Dot laughed. "I'll know it's you because of that beautiful smile, and I'll be able to hear you singing from a mile away." Sonata hugged Dot tightly, and slowly backed away from him. "Go on, I'll watch you in," Dot said. With a nod, Sonata began the slow trek back to her house. Once she was at the front door, she looked back one last time to see Dot climbing back into his car. She heard the engine crank and with a final wave; he disappeared down the road. Sonata took a deep breath and knocked on the door. Without a moment's waste, the front door swung open, revealing a frazzled looking Adagio. She gripped Sonata's arm and dragged her into the house. "WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?!?!" she cried. "DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT TIME IT IS?! WHY DIDN'T YOU CALL?!?!" Sonata tilted her head in confusion. "I thought you told me to take as long as I needed to," she said quizzically. "Did you, at least, get the magic?" Aria asked. "What magic?" Sonata asked. "Told you she'd forget," Aria said. Adagio pinched the bridge of her nose in frustration. "Forget the magic!" she snapped. "Just, please, go to bed, Sonata." "Okay," Sonata chirped and walked up the stairs to her bedroom. Hearing the door close, Adagio sunk into the couch with a heavy sigh. "Feel better?" Aria asked smugly. "Shut up," Adagio angrily replied. Sonata set the corsage in her nightstand drawer. With a content, yet disappointed smile, she climbed into bed and slowly drifted off to sleep. She dreamt of Dot Matrix, the sock hop, and her very first kiss. PRESENT DAY Sonata took a deep breath as she stood at the front doors of Canterlot High School. It was her first official day of school, as she and her sisters had enrolled right the wrongs that they had caused. Though reluctant, Adagio and Aria agreed to the terms. As she walked alongside her sisters, Sonata glanced at her schedule. The first class she had was math. Luckily, she shared the same class with Adagio. She was a whiz at math. Aria had English and had gone on her way. Despite the fact that Sunset Shimmer and her friends gave them a second chance, she was still a bit nervous. She had decided to wear her lucky bracelet to give herself some closure. Sonata walked into the classroom, followed by Adagio. A few students already filled the many seats. Most were either studying or talking amongst themselves. Adagio made her way to a place near the back while Sonata went up to greet her teacher. “Good morning,” she said politely. The man turned to face Sonata with a warm grin. Small wrinkles circled his dark eyes, which were covered by black glasses. He took Sonata’s hand in his for a firm handshake. “Good morning,” he returned. “I’ve been expecting some new students today. I’m Mr. Matrix.” Matrix? That name sounded so familiar. Then, Sonata’s eyes widened. It couldn’t be… Mr. Matrix glanced at Sonata’s bracelet. “That’s a lovely corsage,” he said. “Special occasion?” “Oh, I got this from a very special someone a long time ago,” Sonata replied, smiling contentedly. “Is that so?” Mr. Matrix asked. “Well, they must've been special to you.” “He was,” Sonata replied. Mr. Matrix chuckled softly. “Forgive my forgetfulness, but I never asked your name,” he said. “I must be getting too old for this job.” Sonata looked up at him and smiled brightly. “It’s Sonata,” she said. “Sonata Dusk.” “That’s funny,” Mr. Matrix said. “I knew a Sonata Dusk once, but she moved away, and I never saw her again.” Sonata looked slightly distraught, but then, an idea popped into her head. She quietly began to hum a little tune. It was slightly off-key and loud enough where only Mr. Matrix could hear. “Oh, this is the night. It’s a beautiful night. And they call it Bella Notte…” Mr. Matrix’s eyes widened, and he looked down at Sonata in shock. “Sonata…? Is it really you…?” he whispered. Sonata nodded happily, as tears threatened to fall from her eyes. Mr. Matrix threw his arms around Sonata and hugged her tightly. “You haven't aged a day, Sonata!” he cried. “You still look the same as when I met you!” “It’s a long story,” Sonata said. “I missed you so much, Dot!” Most of the students looked on at the reunion. Some thought that Mr. Matrix was Sonata’s grandfather while others were outright confused. Of those confused, Adagio was absolutely dumbfounded. “How and why does this old man know my sister?!” ~THE END~ Author's Note Hope you guys liked this.
