Five years and some months ago

“So, you’re going to go back down there after a thousand years of being banished here…” I began asking for clarification over a meal of conjured up fruits and vegetables. “And cast the single country of Equestria into eternal darkness?”

“Ugh, yes! We’ve been over this for the last thirteen years!” Nightmare Moon scoffed before inserting a forkful of some kind of salad into her mouth. The leaves were supposed to be green like the planet in the horizon but here on the moon, my birthplace, the leaves had grown grey and tasteless. Apparently.

“But wouldn’t that just cook the other side of the planet? We’ve already established that the planet is round. If you never raise the sun for your home country, that means it’d just remain on the other side where they’d never have any night time whatsoever.” I added pointedly, though my argument fell on deaf ears since she and I had already gone through this conversation before.

“I’m aware of that, you fool!” Nightmare Moon hissed, glaring at me over her fork. “I care nothing for those idiots outside of my borders!”

“Oh good, I thought your plan was confusing but this clears things right up!” I rolled my eyes and scarfed down the rest of my dinner before she told me what I knew was coming.

“That is absolutely no way to speak to your mother!” Nightmare Moon began. I didn’t even give her anything more than a bored sigh and picked up my plate to drop it into a sink. Apparently she’d been on the moon long enough that she’d been able to conjure up quite a few creature comforts for the duration of her thousand year banishment. Like an entire air-tight palace sitting nestled neatly between two large mountains.

“Yeah yeah, ‘go to your room’, I’m going.” I grumbled, quite sure I'd pissed off mom more than I already had with my snarky answer.

“I- Ooh!” Nightmare Moon groaned angrily and with a hoof stamp. “I never thought that my own offspring would behave so, so childishly before me!”

“Yeah, and I never thought my mother would be some young-ish princess throwing a temper tantrum which got her banished here!” I shouted back, ignoring the sound of mom throwing dishes around before magically fixing them. “No word of a lie, mother, but I'll be quite surprised if you actually manage to accomplish anything on that planet!”

“How dare you! I will have you know-” My mother was cut off by the sound of the door swinging shut behind me as I wandered the irrationally large halls of the irrationally large palace that only she and I were residents of.

“So seriously wish she’d just get sent back home already!” I whined, entering into the library to continue my magical studies. By order of Her Highness I was forced to study all manners of magic, both light and dark if I was to eventually serve as a potential heir to the dark throne should her plans actually work.

In truth, I only studied the magic to give myself something to do over the last nine years. As soon as my magic began to manifest alongside my wings, I was thrown into the library with a bunch of old, dusty books and told to study and perfect my magics.

Looking up at the calendar I'd manufactured by reading the stars, tales mom had told me about and other pertinent information, I estimated that there was still a few more days until Nightmare Moon was destined to return. Parallel, that’d also mean I'd get pulled along and actually experience pony contact for the first time in my lonely life.

I wonder what it’ll be like to actually set hoof on a technically alien planet… I wondered as I floated a magical tome at random to my desk. I wonder how I'd be received, being the son of Nightmare Moon…

Flipping to a page marked with a small leaf of paper, I let myself waft away in the ink and syntax of the words.

Five years and a few less days ago

“So, this is it, huh?” I asked as I packed my bags for the trip to the planet above us. Mom and I were stood on what was called the launch pad, watching the four stars that were gradually getting closer; their speed noticeably increasing as they drew near.

“Indeed it is, Eclissi. We will return to the planet surface and banish my wretched sister here for a thousand years. And so will begin the reign of Queen Nightmare Moon!” Mom declared eagerly, rearing back on her hooves with this declaration. “And son, of course.” she added once she’d calmed down and returned to the surface.

“Uh huh, provided of course you’re not instantly defeated by whatever technology they’d developed over the last millennium.” I replied, shaking my head slowly. “Hey, when we do get defeated, do you think the government would allow me to get a manecut?” I asked casually, a strand of my black mane draping down over my face in the process. “It’s getting kinda long…”

“Oh whatever. Cut it yourself, you lazy ass.” Nightmare Moon replied, just as pissed off as ever.

“Love you too, mom.” I flicked my mane back over my equally black shoulders, the fibres of my mane sitting just over the faint red of the ends of my fur.

“Hush, it is time!” Nightmare Moon grinned with full teeth as the stars assembled above us before beginning a counter-clockwise spin above our heads.

“What’s going on?” I demanded as my mother’s body began to be pulled up from the surface, though mine remained firmly rooted. “What’s happening!”

“I’ll be back for you, my son! Don’t worry!” Nightmare Moon unhelpfully shouted back as the spinning stars seemed to explode into a tunnel of light. The tunnel continued on for a ways before the space claimed the excess light and let the bridge remain otherwise invisible.

Then suddenly, I was alone.
