*Dean*
I look out of the window next to the door to the school's entrance. I look down at my phone and sigh as I check the time. I can't believe I stayed here because of detention! To make things worse, I had to spend that entire time with the one girl in the entire school that can piss me off! Now, here I am, at school, at seven o'clock at night.
I open the front door of the school, only to be blasted by a sheet of freezing cold rain. Great, is it really going to be one of those days? I brush it off as I pull my hood over my head to keep my hair dry. I start walking towards my silver truck when I hear a voice call out from behind me.
"Sanders!" I turn around to see Jessica looking at me with a less than happy frown. Whatever she is about to say, she obviously doesn't want to.
"What now Jess?" I say with a sigh as I roll my eyes.
"I... don't have a ride, and you're the only person still here besides teachers. Drive me home." She says from the doorway. Now, here is where I make my decision. I can either ditch her in the rain, or be the kind guy that I am, and drive her home, despite the fact that I hate her guts.
Since I'm not an asshole, I look past the fact that I hate her for a minute. Now all I see is a girl who doesn't want to walk home in the rain. I sigh and look to my truck before looking back at Jessica.
"Fine... get in." I mumble loud enough for her to hear me. She nods, still not thrilled by the fact that I'm the one driving her home.
Once we're buckled in, I start the engine and begin to pull out of the parking lot. It is a dark night here in Colorado, and I'm dreading having to drive the mountain roads to take Jessica home. I know she lives on the other side of town from here, and that means going through some tight turns on the mountains to get there.
"Ugh, it smells like sweat in here." Jessica mumbles as she begins texting on her smart phone.
"That's probably just you." I retort as I pull onto the highway. We sit in silence for a few minutes before Jessica pipes up.
"This sucks... Why did you have to start yelling at me in class? We wouldn't have gotten detention if you would have just kept your mouth shut."
"Me!?" I yell back. "You were the one who started arguing with me! It isn't my fault at all!" We start to approach a turn around a mountain as we exit off the highway. These turns always freaked me out since one wrong move could result with you flying over the edge.
"Bullshit! You're always the one starting stuff with me Dean! Why can't you just stop bothering me so much!"
"Why don't you get over the fact that in fifth grade I-" I'm about to start yelling back, but Jessica grabs my arm suddenly, which shocks me, and begins screaming."
"Dean look out!" I look away from Jessica to see a car coming straight for us. I grit my teeth and turn the wheel all the way to the left, causing my truck to swerves towards the metal rail that separates us from the cliff. I close my eyes as I feel metal break through metal, and then the sensation of falling overtakes me. Jessica digs her fingers into my arm as we both scream.
I see a bright light flash through my closed eyelids, and open them to see us falling at a different angle towards an open field. What the hell just happened? The truck is now completely horizontal instead of pointing downwards, and it looks like we're in a plane coming in for a landing in the open field.
"What's happening!" Jessica screams as we get closer to the ground. I don't respond as I prepare myself for the landing.
The truck's wheels slam into the ground, and the truck bounces a couple of times before it continues to drive across the flat ground. We both gasp in, not realizing we had been holding our breaths.
I slam my foot on the breaks and the truck comes to a skidding stop on the dirt.
"What... just happened." Jessica says as she moves the hair out of her face. She looks at me with anger in her eyes, and I know she is about to let me have it. I know her all too well though, so I'm able to cut her off before she starts her stupid rant.
"We almost died because you couldn't keep your damn mouth shut!" I yell at her, though she seems more confused now that angry.
"What? No, not that! That was your fault by the way... No, I meant how did we land in the middle of a field? And where's the mountain?" She asks as she begins to look around through the various windows in the car. I too become curious and step out of the truck. No rain... but that can't be possible, it was just pouring. And she was right, what happened to the mountain? Also, we were falling towards a bunch of trees, not an open field!
"Jess..." I say as she steps out of the car, my breath quickening with my heart rate.
"I'm here." She says, her usually hateful attitude towards me now gone completely. "What the hell..." She mumbles as she walks up to me. At this moment, we aren't bitter enemies, we're two kids scared shitless just trying to figure out where they are.
"I know, phone, duh." I say as I pull out my phone. Jessica does the same thing as she realizes what I'm doing.
"Do you... have any service?" She asks as she shows me her phone. I look at it to see that she has no service, and there are no wifi hotspots within range of us. Strange... I look down at my phone to see that none of the bars are filled that are almost always there to notify me of a stable connection to my phone company.
"N-No, I don't... I always get a signal though! Even in the mountains!" I say both in fear and anger.
"Well now what!? We can't call for help, we're in the middle of nowhere, and I'm stuck here with you!" Yep, there's the malice again. Nice to have it back. "What are gonna do? Drive in a random direction until we run out of gas!?"
"No, we wait until sunrise, then we'll head out." I say as I feel around in my pockets. Must have left it in the truck... I run back over to the passenger's side of the truck, and open the door. I pop open the glove compartment, and fish my hand around until I fine the two things that I'd need to get us comfortably through the night.
"You keep a pocket knife and a lighter in your truck?" Jessica asks as I return. I notice it is quite a bit colder now than it was earlier today. It is about mid April right now, and the rain stopped, so why is it so damn cold?
"Well yeah, never know when you'll need them..." I say as I look at Jessica. She's trying to look tough, but I can see her shivering. All she has on is a white shirt and a pair of skinny jeans on. I look down at my black t-shirt and jeans, and remember why I'm not at cold as her. I'm wearing a red hoodie that is keeping a good portion of the cold air off of me.
"So you gonna make a fire or what?" Jessica says a minute later. I look around for anything we could burn, but see nothing but grass in every direction for miles.
"There isn't anything to burn but grass, and that won't last long enough to keep us warm." I explain.
"Is there anything in the truck?" She asks. I think about it for a second before we both head over to the truck. I have one of those four door trucks, so that means I have a back seat. I open the door behind the driver's door, and we look into the back. We have some of our textbooks and binders back here. While those could last a while while burning, we kinda need them for school. Might as well see what Jess thinks.
"We could use our school stuff as fuel for the fire. Our only other option is to freeze to death out here, or find a way to get gas out of the truck, but we need that to travel."
"I am NOT failing class because you weren't smart enough to find a better fuel source Dean!" She says bitterly as she hops into the back seat. "There has to be something..." She mumbles.
"Find anything?" I say in a monotone voice as I watch her dig around in the back of my truck.
"How about you use your little knife there to cut off the fabric from these seats? They should burn right?" She says as she rubs her hand against the fabric covering the seats.
"Well... yeah... it would but-"
"No buts! We're doing this Sanders, now cut it off!" She says as she hops out of the truck. I sigh and realize this is probably our best option. Getting new seats won't be as strenuous than repeating the grade because I burned all of my work. I open my knife, the six inch steel blade shining in the moon light. Wait, moon?
"Um, Jessica, wasn't the moon supposed to be only a half crescent tonight?" I say as I look up at the sky.
"Well yeah, I mean look at it." She says as she too looks up at the sky. Both of our jaws drops when we see that there is now a full moon in the sky where there was a half moon just an hour ago.
"What the fuck..." I mumble as I continue to stare at the celestial body that is the moon. "How does it just change like that in less than an hour?"
"Just... get back to cutting..." Jessica says, the anger in her voice gone again. I nod and being cutting off the covers to the back seats.
About twenty minutes later, we had a decent sized pile of flammable fabric. I sigh as I look at my truck, the back seat looking like somebody took a chainsaw to it. At least our school stuff is okay.
We gather some stones that we find on the ground, and being placing them in a circle. While Jessica places the stones, I pile up the fabric in the middle. Once we have everything set up, we sit down on opposite sides of the small unlit camp fire. I flick on the lighter, and hold the flame up to a piece of cloth. It takes a minute, but the flame starts spreading quickly over the fabric. Good thing there's no wind right now, or this might not be possible.
"Oh thank God." Jessica says as she holds her hands over the fire.
"Enjoy it now, it won't last more than about an hour I'd say." I respond as I hold my hands close to the fire. I let out a sigh as I stare at the flames in the small pit. Just what happened to us exactly? I'm scared beyond belief, but I can't let Jessica see that, she'd just laugh at me or something dumb like that.
About fifteen minutes pass by as we sit there in silence. I can't say I'm really enjoying this, but I'm definitely starting to calm down, even if I'm in the middle of nowhere with my mortal enemy.
"Dean?" Jessica says as she looks up at me. I stop staring at the flames to look her in the eyes. I expect her to be angry, or maybe getting ready to rant to me again, but instead, when I look in her eyes, all I see is sadness and fear.
"Yeah?"
"Are we going to be okay? I mean, I'm pretty sure this isn't Colorado anymore. There aren't any fields within miles of the city, and the mountain disappeared, and then the moon changed..." She begins to break down, and I actually start to feel bad for her. As much as I can't stand even her presence, I begin to feel for her. I'm scared too, but we can't let that overcome us until we find out just what the fuck is going on.
"I-I think so." I say quietly as I stare back down at the fires. "Jessica... how about this?" I say. She looks up at me with red eyes. "We're allies until we get out of wherever we are, then we can be enemies again, deal?"
"U-Uh huh." She nods as she looks back up at the sky. "I don't even know what to do..."
"In the morning, we'll start heading north. Eventually we'll find something right? There has to be some kind of civilization around here." I say, trying to keep the mood up.
"A-Alright... Do we have enough gas?"
"Almost a full tank." I say with a sigh as I lean back on the grass. The ground is rather soft under my back, and I find my eyes slowly becoming heavier.
Then, I fall into a peaceful sleep.
*Jessica*
I can't believe he just fell asleep like that. He's supposed to be keeping the fire going! Ugh, this guy, I swear... But then again, I kind of need him right now. He's always been such a nerd, he probably knows more about what to do than I do right now.
I watch the fire as it slowly starts to shrink. If that thing goes out, I'm going to have to spend the rest of the night out here in the cold, and I can't sleep in the truck because Dean went and took all of the fabric out. That means I'm going to have to start burning school stuff.
I stand up and walk over the Dean's truck, and smile when I see it is unlocked. As much as I hate the guy, I'm not going to just dig through his stuff and then burn it. I pull out my trigonometry binder, and start looking for papers that I won't need any more. After about five minutes. I have a decent sized pile of notebook papers and worksheets. Hopefully I won't need these for school anymore.
I walk back over the fire and sit down close to the edge, Dean still sleeping on the other side. I sigh as I start crumpling up paper balls and tossing them into the fire. Each once makes the flames grow bigger and brighter. I have a good hundred sheets, so this outta last me a while.
After I toss in about fifty sheets of paper, and I feel that the fire is big enough for me, I lay down on my back and begin closing my eyes. What I wouldn't do to have a nice warm blanket right now...
Before I know it, I'm taken over by the ever so familiar presence of sleep.
I open my eyes, only to squint them shut as the sun pours down onto me. From what I saw, I'd say it is about seven or eight in the morning. Why am I outside? I sit up and see the dying embers of the fire from the previous night, and all of the memories flood back to me. I groan and place my head in my hands as I see Dean on the other side of the pit, still sound asleep.
Of all the guys to get stuck with... I guess it isn't so bad, I mean, he is pretty good when it comes to survival skills, I'll give him that.
I begin to stretch as I stand up, lifting my arms high above my head. Despite sleeping on the ground, it was rather comfortable, especially with the warm fire. I let out a groan as I stretch my legs, and it seems Dean woke up at the sound.
"Well... morning sunshine." He says with a groggy voice. I scoff at him as I continue stretching.
"Don't ever call me that again." I say in my best annoyed voice I can muster. "Lets get moving already."
"Alright, alright, sheesh somebody isn't very patient." He says in an annoying tone. I roll my eyes at him as I walk over to the passenger's side of the truck.
Dean hops into the driver's seat after putting out the embers, and starts the ignition. He begins driving due north, yet all we see for miles is open pastures. No animals, no people, no buildings, no nothing. I sigh as I lean my head against my arm which is propped up against the window. I have to admit that the scenery, while terrifying, is actually pretty beautiful once you get past the fact that it shouldn't exist.
"So, what are you gonna tell your parents when they ask where you were?" Dean asks me, probably trying to break the ice of the awkward silence. I think it over for a bit. What would I tell them? That I got lost in a field and slept on the ground next to the guy that I've hated for years?
"Probably just gonna tell them that I went to a friend's house and forgot to tell them. At least today is Saturday, so we aren't missing school." I say with a sigh as I continue to stare out the window.
"Thanks for that, I'll use that excuse too." He says with a smirk. Did he ask that just to steal my excuse?
"One problem Sanders, you don't have any friends."
"Wow, that one hurt Simmons." He says with his smirk still on his face. Ugh, I hate it when I can't get to him like that. Whatever, now isn't the time to be starting fights.
"It was supposed to."
We keep driving for about two hours before we finally come up to what looks like a forest. There are some storm clouds above it, actually come to think of it, those are the only clouds that I've even seen today. The sky is just so clear today, but we never seem to get days like these in Colorado... What is happening?
"Should we go into that forest or go around it?" Dean asks me as we quickly approach the grove of trees. I get a bad feeling from the trees, so I suggest that we go around. He nods and begins turning to the left to go around them. This field just seems impossibly big for us to have gone this far to just now find some trees. At least if we spend another night out here we'll have wood.
Time to see if we can find any civilization.
*Dean*
I grip the steering wheel as we continue to go pass the forest. Something about it just doesn't feel safe, so I was glad to hear Jessica say she wanted to go around it.
After driving past the giant grove of trees, both of our hearts jump when we see what looks like a hill in front of us. It isn't the hill that excites us, no, we can see some roof tops above it! I don't even care where we are anymore, I'm just glad we've finally found some kind of civilization.
We drive around the small hill, and a decent sized town comes into view. We both start laughing hysterically as we near the town. We park just on the outskirts, and slowly get out of the car.
"Alright, try to fit in." I say as we hide behind a building. "I'm pretty sure we both figured out this isn't Colorado anymore, so we don't know if these people even speak our language. We wouldn't want to scare them off." I whisper as we press our back up against the wall.
"This is stupid Dean. This isn't some spy movie, why are we up against the wall like this hiding?"
"If you want to see for yourself, then be my guest, take a look." I say as I roll my eyes. She nods and peeks around the corner, but stays there even when I tell her to pull her head back.
"Jess! Get back over here!" I whisper rather loudly. She snaps back to reality, and turns her head to face me. Her face is white as if she'd seen a ghost or something. "What's wrong? What did you see?" I ask as I slide over to her.
"H-Horse... Color..." She mumbles out before falling to her knees. What the fuck did she see? I step around her, and poke my head out from around the corner. I should have a clear view of the town from here and- WHAT THE HELL?
Walking down the streets are a bunch of horses, but not like the big brown or white ones you see on farms and stuff. No, these are like, maybe three feet tall, and every color of the rainbow! And... I think some of them have wings and these little horns on their heads.
I turn back and fall down next to Jessica, not really sure what to say. I'd been through quite a bit in the last few hours, but this... this doesn't even compare.
"W-We should go over there." Jessica says weakly as she begins to stand. I nod and stand along side her, and we slowly make our way into town.
"Just keep an eye out for any people." I say as we begin walking down the street. I look around at the bizarre creatures, and notice even more oddities about them. For one, they all have really big eyes, like, REALLY big. Their hair, or manes, or whatever they are called, are even styled up like a human's hair. One even has the exact same hair style as Jessica.
They seem to stare at us as we slowly walk through town, though we don't notice anything else about them as we try not to make eye contact.
"This is trippy as hell..." Jessica mumbles as we walk through the town.
"You got that ri-" I suddenly get cut off as I suddenly lose control of my body. I can no longer move anything other than my mouth and eyes. I look as far left as I can, and I see Jessica is also paralyzed. What's even weirder, is the fact that there is some kind of pinkish aura around us, keeping us still. The next thing I know, we are floating a good three feet in the air, still paralyzed.
"What the hell!" Jessica screams as she tries to struggle against whatever this stuff is. I begin flexing and contracting my muscles, trying in vain to move even just a finger.
"What is this!" I yell as I too begin to struggle.
"A paralysis spell." An obviously female voice says from behind us. If I could move, I would have turned around so fast I'd have gotten whiplash.
"Who are you!? And what do you mean by spell!" Jessica yells in anger. I catch a small glimpse of something lavender walk past us to our right. One of the mini horses, a purple one, walking past us and turns around the look us in the eyes.
"I am Twilight Sparkle." The horse says. Wait, what!? It just... It... WHAT!?
Sorry brain.exe has stopped working, would you like to reboot? Unable to reboot, shutting down...
Jessica and I both stare at the strange creature, our mouths gaping open.
"You... it... talked... Dean! What the fuck is this!?" Jessica says now in fear instead of anger. I look down at the creature that just spoke to us, and notice it has one of those horns on its head. The same pink aura around our bodies is surrounding her horn. She must be the one holding us here!"
"Excuse me, mam." I say, trying to sound friendly. "We mean you no harm, and would appreciate it if you let us down." The creature, apparently named Twilight, thinks it over for a minute before the aura suddenly vanishes. We drop to the ground with a thud, and Jessica sighs in relief.
"Thank... you..." She gasps out, probably having a panic attack.
"Who are you two? I've never seen you around before." Twilight says with a curious look. I look around me, and notice the large group of these creatures gathering around us.
"Um, can we go somewhere private please? I think we need to talk some things out with you..." I say calmly as I basically force Jessica up to her feet after she fell to her knees.
"Sure! We can go back to my house. It isn't too far. Please follow me." Twilight starts walking down the street, and I look at Jessica. Right now, I don't see her as an enemy, I see her as the only person that I know and can somewhat trust. I wrap an arm around her shoulder, and to my surprise, she doesn't try to throw it off. I help her walk down the street, her legs still weak from the panic attack.
Where the fuck are we? And how are we supposed to get home?
