Prologue: The Story of the Bow of Light
Long before the founding of Equestria, a great civilization lived in this land. They created devices that allowed them to use powerful magic, and technology even more advanced than our own. But then, one day, they seemingly disappeared, and the only traces of them left are in worn-out history scrolls. Historians don't even know what the members of this civilization looked like, but they certainly weren't ungulates of any sort. Some Equestrian fairy tales are believed to have originated from this era, such as the story of the Bow of Light.
An immeasurably long time ago, a force of pure malevolence lived in this land. It knew nothing but destruction, and the only thing that could defeat it was the Bow of Light, a golden weapon said to have once belonged to divine entities. However, this weapon was highly guarded, so that only the truly courageous could find it.
A young hero once traveled the land to find the Bow of Light and defeat the malevolent force. Unlike most heroes, however, he didn't do this because of a prophecy, nor was he incredibly courageous; he went on his journey simply because he happened to be there, and ended up being tangled up in events which otherwise had nothing to do with him. Along the way, he was joined by a girl around his age, and together they journeyed, slaying monsters through forest, snow, ocean, fire and sand. After many hardships, tears, and losses, he finally found the Bow of Light and defeated the ancient evil. The hero and the girl became the protectors of the land, and the Bow of Light was once again hidden away.
But is this story really true? Probably not. Tales of heroes slaying monsters are common all over the world, and are typically metaphors for overcoming the problems in the world. A legend is a story we look up to, that inspires us to do something great. In a way, legends shape who we all are...
