Many thought he was insane.

Some thought he was self centered.

His plans were not simple nor plain.

Projects forgotten, never remembered.

His biggest plan of all,

Would come to backfire.

Untimely was his fall,

But many would he inspire.

His final creation,

The one they call Discord.

His goal in the nation,

to be an ultimate overlord.

Brought down by royalty,

The tyrant has fallen.

Turned oh so stony,

His expression sullen.

Discord's legacy lives on,

His creator unknown.

Starswirl is gone,

But his brilliance has shone.

There was once a brilliant unicorn that had magical capabilities beyond even the princess' powers. He had studied magic for years, honed his skills and even written his own stories. He was believed to have created a spell for temporary time travel. Many thought he was meddling in Mother Nature to create the weather patterns according to what he wanted. Others merely believed he was a fraud. But this particular wizard was as real as the muzzle on Celestia's face. That is to say.. he was obviously real. Very few were able to meet him, and if you did, you would have been terrified by what the wizard had done. He had kept creatures locked in cages, and done magic experiments on them. One blue pony in particular had met the elusive magician, and had gone insane. For years, she muttered under her breath many intangible things.  Nopony thought to go see the wizard again, for fear of meeting the same fate. Thankfully, the wizard did not mind the silence. His only visitors were now the princesses. And most often only Luna. Celestia disapproved of his projects and experiments, while the moon princess found them interesting and captivating. She would visit him often, asking him to perform spells for him. He soon fell in love with her, as she did for him. The two began to spend time together, much to the dismay of Celestia. But the bearded stallion was wickedly genius, and he distorted Celestia's memories to forget what he had done. This left Luna freely able to go courting with the prodigious stallion. Of course, there came the problem of her immortality. She would outlive her partner, leaving her alone and grieving over him. So the stallion worked long and hard on a longevity project, frantically trying to find a way to prevent his aging. He stumbled across a new spell, which could bring a creature back to life. He taught the spell to Luna, allowing her the ability to bring him back, should he fail while trying to find a proper spell for longevity. He was determined to find the spell. And he did, after years  of research. So he cast the spell, ensuring long life. Supposedly.

Starswirl sat in his study, patiently writing notes on the various subjects in the room. In one tube, a sleeping doe lay curled around her foal. In a cage on the other side of the cavernous space was a dragon with a clamp over his muzzle. Directly next to the bearded prodigy was a small lion cub, which he had named Mayhem. Unlike his name, Mayhem was quite tame and calm. Of course, that was why Star had left the lion out of a cage for the time being. He had also let it out to take measurements on the cub's fore-paws. He would need to be sure the cub was the right size.

He already had the other subjects at the proper size.

Other than the dragon.

The dragon still needed to grow.

His spirit awaits the day,

Another shall awaken him.

He'll come and by the monster he'll stay,

And nopony will be allowed to take him.

The monster knows not who was his creator,

Only that he's alive.

He'll one day know his maker,

Then his kingdom will grow and thrive.
