Spike tossed and turned trying with great effort to get a few hours of sleep before the sun arose. It had been hours upon hours that he had been lying in bed trying to rest. He had one pony on his mind. Rarity. His severe insomnia made it difficult for Spike to sleep and with Rarity on his mind, it only made it all the more difficult. Spike had feelings nopony understood. He didn't even understand them himself. When Spike first laid eyes upon Rarity, he knew there was something special about her. After a few days of settling into their new home, Spike and Twilight Sparkle had made friends with a good amount of ponies. It wasn't long until both Spike and Twilight were comfortable and content living in Ponyville.
Spike enjoyed helping anyway he could. He jumped at any opportunity to assist someone in need. Whether it be re-shelving books at the library or helping bake cupcakes down at Sugarcube Corner, he took pleasure in helping his friends. Spike found it quite often that his friends asked for his assistance but he didn't mind. It was something he looked forward to and since he didn't have an actual job at the time, this left him with a lot of free time most days. Spike felt that offering his assistance to his friends was a good way to spend time and bond with them. He liked being around them and he especially enjoyed helping Rarity around the boutique because it meant he would be spending time with her, something he admired greatly. When Rarity asked Spike for his aid, he would drop whatever plans he had just to help her. He always made the time for her.
The more time Spike spent with Rarity the more he noticed his feelings for her growing stronger. He appreciated all of her characteristics and traits. She was sweet, bountiful, and was always willing to help anyway she could. Not to mention her stunning looks and knowledge of fashion. Spike knew these feelings were much more than just a crush but he couldn't quite explain it. Everyone who knew of his feelings figured it was temporary and that he would eventually get over her, but he didn't. Ever since he met her he hadn't gone a single night without thinking about her. She was beautiful…
4:32 AM
Another glance at the clock. Frustrated, Spike flipped his pillow to the other side hoping it would make a difference. Twilight's soft breathing could be heard in the other room as she slept peacefully. After observing his surroundings yet again, his mind returned to Rarity. He imagined what she looked like resting at that moment. Calm, still, and gentle, he presumed.
"Like a feather.", he said to himself, letting out a sigh…
Spike lied there on his back staring up towards the ceiling as he imagined what it would be like to hold Rarity close to him as they both slept next to one another. He often found himself with these kinds of thoughts running through his mind but he couldn't help it. He really liked Rarity. So much that he couldn't find a way to explain these emotions to anypony, let alone Rarity herself. No one knew how Spike truly felt. He had the tendency of keeping his emotions to himself, it's a habit Spike had carried with him his whole life. It took strenuous convincing to get Spike to discuss his sentiments whenever he was troubled but a part of him really wanted to discuss these feelings to another pony. He thought getting his feelings out to a close friend would lift a heavy weight off of his shoulders but how would he explain his emotions if he didn't understand them himself?
It took Spike some time to think about this but he eventually settled with the decision to attempt to explain and talk over this subject to a friend. He figured it would be a good way to vent and maybe get an opinion or thought from another pony. The thought of discussing something so personal and secretive to another pony made him nervous but he was willing to open up if would relieve the stress it has been giving him lately. Spike wanted to talk to someone he was comfortable being around. Someone he knew he could be himself around and not have worry about criticism. But who?
The cheery, pink-maned party pony almost instantly popped into his mind. They had both spent a lot of time together and they knew each other pretty well. If it wasn't helping down at Sugarcube Corner it was simply hanging out. She was definitely one of his closer friends, there was no doubt about that. Spike knew that she could be serious when necessary and he knew that he could trust her with a secret. But regardless, Spike couldn't help but feel apprehensive about sharing his feelings to another pony, but Spike knew Pinkie Pie was the right pony to go to. They were close friends and he knew he could trust her.
Spike listened to the soft pattering against the roof of the large tree home. The rain had started falling at a slightly more rapid pace. It brought a wave of comfort and reassurance over him. He wondered how he would go about bringing this up to Pinkie.
"Relax, Spike…", he said to himself.
"It's not like you're gonna confront Rarity herself. It's just Pinkie Pie. You can trust Pinkie. She's one of your best friends…
Spike wondered how Pinkie Pie would react. Would she be surprised? Probably not. It wasn't hard for anyone to notice Spike's affections towards the beautiful fashionista. He kept his feelings for her a secret pretty well, but when Spike was near her they tended to show more.
Spike wouldn't describe it as simply a crush. He didn't know what to describe it as. Was it love?
"No. It can't be.", he said aloud to himself. Spike didn't know what love was. Whatever this emotion was, it sure was strong. Strong enough to keep him from sleeping every night. Maybe Pinkie had an explanation for what it might be. Spike just had to try to explain it well enough.

Enough thinking for one night, Spike concluded.
Exhausted, he stared out of his bedroom window at the gentle rain one last time before turning to his side and drifting off into slumber…
