Flower Of the Soccer Field
A Pregnancy Test
Load Full StoryDash sat in the nurse’s office waiting for her to be done with another student, who seemed to have a small burn mark on his hand. She watched him get treated as she tried to come up with a way to start explaining her problem. Rainbow Dash couldn’t believe one of her vomiting episodes happened at school, especially as a couple of her friends watched. Applejack had patted her on the back while Fluttershy watched, sounding so worried with her whimpers. They were the ones who walked Rainbow Dash to the nurse’s office before they had to part ways for their classes.
Rainbow Dash watched as the bandages were applied on the patient’s injured hand and listened to the nurse explaining what to do for a faster recovery before the student got up and gave his thanks. As he exited the door, the nurse walked up to Rainbow Dash.
“Thank you for waiting. What’s going on?” She politely asked,
Rainbow Dash sighed before she started to explain. “I’m not really sure, earlier I was throwing up like crazy in the bathroom. I don’t really know why, I mean, it’s been happening for about a week or so now, but it has never been as bad as it was today. I definitely didn't expect it to happen in school, it's usually right after I wake up.”
The nurse sat down in front of her, “Are you having any stomach pain?” She asked with a professional smile.
“Not really, no.” Rainbow Dash replied.
“Have you been experiencing anything else? Even something very small?” The nurse asked, a slightly unnerved expression on her face.
Rainbow Dash thought for a moment. “Well, now that you mentioned it, I wake up every morning feeling very nauseous that sometimes precedes me throwing up, my chest sometimes hurts like crazy, and I run out of breath so easily, it's really starting to affect my gameplay.” She crossed her arms and pouted a bit.
The nurse slowly shook her head. “I see, well, you may not like this question, but, have you by any chance had any….relations lately?”
The question sparked memories in Rainbow Dash’s head. Lately, she's been trying so hard to move on from a break up. Trying so hard to forget his face. Even more so one the biggest mistake she could had ever make in her life. She has regretted it not as much as she did after this guy cheated on her and dumped her. This placed so much stress on her that she had a hard time doing things. Even when it came to her sports. Three weeks has gone by since the break up now and she's beginning to feel that it all doesn't matter and can simply move on. But this moment may make everything she's been trying to forget hit her in the face.
Rainbow Dash looked down at the floor. She gave a slowly shook her head and remained silent.
“Do you know how long ago?” The nurse asked.
Rainbow Dash was silent for a few seconds and finally spoke. “A couple…….a couple of months ago.” She mumbled.
“I see.” the nurse frowned as the possibilities were narrowed. “When was your last period?”
Rainbow Dash couldn't form words. Too much was going through her mind. She soon realized that it has been a while. After constantly denying it in her head, she realized that she couldn't win the battle against reality. “I don't….I don't know.” She mumbled.
“Well.” The nurse began. “I'm not sure, but it sounds to me that you... may be pregnant.”
“What?” Rainbow Dash asked in shock. She was afraid the nurse may say that. “No, I can't be.”
“You can never be too sure. But, it's a possibility.” The nurse said. “Would you like to take a pregnancy test to make sure?”
“Woah, woah, wait.” Rainbow Dash waved her hands. “A-are you...serious? W-what makes you think I'm p-pregnant?
“Well, at first, I was thinking you may had fought a stomach virus, until you mentioned you had aching breasts, shortages of breath, and waking up every morning feeling dizzy or nauseous, being late three months in a row. Those sound very close to pregnancy symptoms to me.”
“Yeah right,” Rainbow Dash said.
“It’s common to deny it,” The nurse lectured, “But it's best to confirm it so that you can get the treatment and care you need.”
“I can take care of myself.” Rainbow Dash smiled.
“I suggest you do it.” The nurse said. “Your own health could be at risk if you're pregnant and not know until you are are at a larger size. I could be wrong, you may not be pregnant at all. But, I'm not sure. So I think it is best to just make sure.
Rainbow Dash let out a sigh. “Fine” she forced herself to say. “I'll do it.”
The nurse got up and walked to a cabinet at the end of the room. Something was pulled out that seemed to be wrapped in plastic, she walked back to Rainbow Dash and handed it to her. “Here,”
Rainbow Dash took it in her hand. It was a pregnancy test stick. A white plastic sticks with a purple cap. There was a small blank, white screen that displays the results. There was text next to it indicating that a line straight across horizontally means you’re not pregnant and two lines crisscrossing into a plus meant you’re pregnant. There was also a folded piece of paper inside. Her whole body was shaking, she couldn't believe what she actually may have to do. “Do I really have to do this?” She asked in a whiny and slightly shocked tone.
“I'm not forcing you to.” The nurse began. “Something tells me that you may be pregnant. Directions on what to do are in there. So do this next time you use the bathroom and come back to me with the results, negative or positive.”
“I'm sure that I'm not... pr-r…pre-”
“Pregnant.” The nurse supplied.
“Yeah, what you said.” Rainbow Dash took a deep breath. She was scared. What if this was true? What will happen to her? How would her friends feel? Her friends! “Okay. I’ll….do what I need to do. Thank you.” She told the nurse as she stared at the stick with a storm of emotions swarming inside her. From worry and guilt, to fear and sorrow.
“Anytime.” The nurse replied. “Take care”
Rainbow Dash got up and opened the door. “You too.” She exited the room and closed the door behind her. Rainbow Dash walked to the classroom she was supposed to be in, trying to register everything the nurse had told her. Registering everything that was going on the past month and a half, and everything that happened at that party. Could it be possible that she's actually expecting? When she was halfway to her classroom, the bell for lunch period rang.
“For the last time Applejack, I'm fine!” Rainbow Dash said loudly, causing the table next to them to look over. She's been trying to convince her friends that she's okay, even though things may not be. She was just unable to tell them what's happening. She can't tell them.
“Are ya' sure, sugarcube?” Applejack said. “Somethin’ just didn't seem right ‘bout ya'.”
“Yes, trust me,” Rainbow replied.
“I think she’s supertastic!” Pinkie Pie exclaimed, “I mean her face has such a glow to it!”
“Come to think of it, she does seem a bit brighter.” Rarity added.
Everyone around the table was staring at Rainbow Dash, slightly seeing her glow, causing Rainbow Dash to grow a bit nervous and start to sweat a bit.
“Can you girls please cut that out?” Rainbow Dash snapped.
“Oh, someone's a bit moody.” Rarity replied. Everyone else remained silent as if they were starting to know something wasn't quite right. Something seemed a bit off about Rainbow Dash, but no matter how much they ask about her, she kept claiming that she was fine. There was something not right about it.
“Rainbow Dash” Fluttershy began. “I can tell, from the way you are reacting, something happened. Are you sure you are not sick?”
“Sick?” Rainbow Dash asked. “Of course not. I'm fine now. I'm not sure what happened.”
“Right…” Applejack whispered.
“In sorry if I'm upsetting you Rainbow Dash,” Fluttershy said looking down. “I'm just...really worried about you. I said what you were going through earlier and--”
“Come on Fluttershy.” Rainbow Dash interrupted. “I wasn't that bad.” She rubbed Fluttershy's hair, messing it up a bit.
“If Rainbow Dash had something really important on her mind, she'll tell us!” Pinkie Pie said. “I mean we're best friends! And we trust each other with everything! Right Dashie?”
“Um...right…” Rainbow Dash nervously said. She was hoping they all just move on from this. For the first time, she actually doesn't want any attention.
The girls began having conversations off topic, funny things that happened in class or other random stuff. Rainbow Dash’s mind zoned off to her possible motherhood. All the things she may have to give up. The reactions of her friends. The possible father, if she really was pregnant, she already knew exactly who the father was. As a matter of fact, she spotted him on the other side of the cafeteria. Does he remember what they did? If so, what will his reaction be when he finds out he's gonna be a father? Rainbow Dash then went completely out of reality into this imaginary world.
She was in a hospital room holding a little newborn. The room was quiet and dim. It was raining outside and the flowers in the room were dead. A music box was playing somewhere and the room was filled with the love between mother and child. Rainbow Dash was alone; no one was by her side. She was left behind by her friends, thinking she was a traitor who abused their loyalty. No one wanted anything to do with her, not even her baby’s father. Rainbow Dash ruined everything because of her stupidity. That's how she was seen. Now she was left stuck, not knowing what to do. She was all alone.
“RAINBOW DASH!!!” Pinkie Pie’s voice yelled, causing Rainbow Dash to snap back to reality. Everyone at her table and the next table was now staring at her. “HELLOOO!?”
“PINKIE!!!” She screamed irritated.
“Rainbow Dash, what’s wrong?” Applejack asked, concern evident in her tone.
“Nothing...I…” Rainbow Dash looked around, unable to meet any of their eyes. “I need to go.” She quickly got up and picked up her tray.
“Wait!” Applejack grabbed on Rainbow Dash’s wrist.
“No!” She shouted. She aggressively swung her arm away from Applejack's grip. “I just….need to be alone right now.” Rainbow Dash walked away. Once she was gone, the girls exchanged glances.
“Girls.” Applejack began. “Somethin’s up. She ain't actin’ right, so just keep a look out for her.” All of the girls nodded at once before they continued their lunch much more silently, worried about their friend.
Rainbow Dash bought four bottles of water from the vending machine. As she grabbed the water bottles after they came out vending machine, she quickly slipped into a nearby empty classroom. She didn’t want to deal with anyone at the moment, especially her friends. She opened the first water bottle and began drinking as she walked towards the window, her gaze fell upon the lush soccer field. She sat on the desk by the window, alone in the dark, drinking her bottle of water and staring out the window. The first bottle was finished within a few minutes, she opened the second bottle and started drinking while she continued staring at the soccer field, thinking that her soccer days, or days of any strenuous activities, may have to come to an end. Temporarily or permanently. Thinking about it made anxiety dance across her body. She finished the second bottle and got started on the third one.
“If I’m pregnant….I’m going to kill him,” she said to herself. “I’m going to wring my hands around his pencil neck until his giant head falls off.” She squeezed the half empty bottle pretending it was her ex’s neck. Some water squirted out and dripped on her hands, leading to her pretending it was his blood. That actually made her laugh a bit, she had a smile on her face for the first time that day since the restroom incident. Though, she actually started to feel bad about blaming him. She finished the third bottle and got started on the fourth one. When the bell rang, she quickly finished the water and got up, leaving the empty classroom with the empty bottles in hand to dispose of them.
All Rainbow Dash had to do now was wait. Wait for her ultimate humiliation, as if she had not been humiliated enough over two months ago. She was in the girl's locker room, alone. It was the end of school hours and she had taken all the steps, now all she had to do was wait three to five minutes.
“Of course, it's going to be negative,” She said in an attempt to reassure herself. She took a deep breath. “But it's possible. I did something, and to experience such strange things a while after.” She listened to the soft hum of the lights and the distant echoes of laughter that came every once in awhile. She felt that it was going to take forever, time seemed to go by very slowly. She checked the timer she had set on her phone and saw only half of a minute had passed.
She sat on the bench by the lockers, thinking about what would happen if it was positive; she would have to step down as sports team captain, may have to step down from her band, and she probably have to lay around and take things easy. Sounds very slow and boring. Suddenly, she began to shake and sweat a little bit, shots of anxiety and nervousness danced up her body. Her actually pregnant fits a better description of what she's experiencing. She thought she could easily forget everything that happened that night and easily put it all behind her, but the fact that a baby may be the result, it can't just be brushed off the shoulder.
A beeping tone shattered Rainbow’s thoughts. She immediately came back to reality and realized that it was time. Her body began to intensely shake, now that the results may actually be on the stick. All it would take was to take it down from the top of the lockers. She took a deep breath and hovered her hand over the stick.
Rainbow Dash brought the pregnancy test down from the top of the lockers to see what her results are.
