Two years have passed since Malonex, the apprentice of king Sombra, tired to take over Equestria and was stopped by two mages of light. Since then he is kept in a prison in Ponyville, that was created by Twilight Sparkle.
Malonex spent his time in his prison, day after day, night after night, never seeing the light of the sun, while other ponies lived their lives.

Those who knew him never talked about him. They hoped that with the help of the light mages Malonex would become the pony again he used to be, before he turned into the monster he is now.
The two light mages are the only ponies that reminded themselves everyday of their task, hoping that their light will show him the right way, not knowing that they only create a bigger shadow.

With the voice of his king constantly echoing in his head, Malonex waits for his revenge and for the opportunity to bring his master finally back. He wants vengeance for his kind, the shadow ponies. A race of darkness that is trapped beneath the crystal empire.
