First Night
Previous ChapterNext Chapter"Oh thank God." I huff out as I lean against a wall, wiping the thin layer of sweat off my forehead. "I thought she was gonna die or something."
"Well duh, you WERE the one who did this to her!" Rainbow says with an annoyed expression on her face.
"You know what? I'm getting tired of your shit! Daring was wrong about this place, I'm outta here." I begin to walk towards the door, when the room goes quiet. I turn around to see why everyone stopped talking, only to see everyone is now staring at me.
"You know Daring Do!?" Both Rainbow and Twilight yell at the same time. I give them a weird look, wondering how they know her before remembering that she is supposedly a famous author.
"Yeah..." I say with some hesitation. "She kinda saved my life, and I kinda saved her's." I say slowly.
"So are you guys, like, friends?" Rainbow asks, no longer seeming angry, more like excited.
"Guess so. She's the only one I trust around here, but it looks like what she told me was wrong. Said I could find some group of friends or something, that they had found her house a few weeks ago..." I look down at Rainbow who starts to blush, as well as Twilight. Wait, Daring mention rainbow hair...
"Oh hell no, don't tell me she was talking about you!" I say as I press my face against the palms of my hands.
"Why would that be a problem?" Rainbow asks, her annoyed tone slowly coming back.
"Forget it, I'm out of here. If any of you need me, I'll be at Fluttershy's house clearing out the wood." I say as I walk out the door, slamming it behind me. Well, that could have gone better, much better. Whatever these guys did to get Daring to call them "friendly", they obviously weren't doing it to me. All I got from them was anger and a coma. Guess I'll have to move on to the next town or something. Maybe I can become a hobo or something, travel the world with nothing to care about.
I make my way out of the hospital, ignoring anyone who tries to talk to me or stop me. I storm outside, still pretty upset about what just transcended back there. That blue one, Rainbow Dash, she was the absolute worse. I could tolerate the rest of them, but God knows that if I see her again, it won't be good for her.
I make my way through the streets of town, losing my anger as it is replaced with nervousness, and a little bit of fear. See, I've never really been big on crowds, much less being the center of attention in said crowd. As I walk through the streets, most of the ponies stare at me, jaws agape in either fare or awe, not really sure. Some even go as far as to scream and run inside, grabbing their children in the process. Damn, this whole fitting in thing is going to be harder than I though.
Luckily, it only takes a few minutes to make it to the edge of town, the crunch of the dirt path turning into soft thumps as I walk through the grass. I remember coming in this direction, so that means the cottage should be around here somewhere. The least I can do for the poor girl is clean up her house after I trashed it.
Reaching the cottage was probably the best part of my day. Of course, good things don't last forever as I hear something in the sky, akin to a large bird. Then I hear a ruffling of the leaves in the tree above me as I stand a few feet away from the entrance of the cottage. Great, a spy, just what I wanted.
"Rainbow Dash, I'm honestly worried about you. I think you might have a severe case of annoying-as-shit-idus." I say up towards the tree. Slowly, a blue figure descends down, and lands in front of me.
"Did you really think I'd let you just come destroy Fluttershy's house like this?" She says, spreading out her wings, probably trying to look threatening. I get down on my knee, grab her shoulders, pull her up to my face, and look her directly in the eye.
"I didn't hurt her, I didn't mean to trash her house, and I saved her life!" I say quietly into her ear, making sure she knows that I'm pissed off. "If you don't believe me, take a fucking look for yourself." I say as I spin her around, and shove her through the doorway where the wooden door once stood. She starts to protest, but sees the mass of wood in the corner of the room, and stops dead in her tracks.
"Timberwolf?" She manages to get out, though rather quietly.
"So that's what they're called..." I mumble to myself. "Look at this, and look at it good." I say as I walk over to the timerwolf, picking up one of it's paws in my hands. "See, covered in blood. And last I remember, wood doesn't bleed."
"So... you weren't-"
"Lying? No, I wasn't. Thanks for that by the way, really made me want to warm up to you ponies." I say sarcastically as I roll my eyes. I look to my left to see Rainbow staring right back at me, saying nothing. Her eyes seem even bigger than normal, which catches me off guard.
"You okay?" I say as I wave a hand in front of her face. "Earth to bitchy horse..."
"I-I... I'm sorry." She says before disappearing in the blink of an eye, leaving behind a rainbow trail and a gush of wind so strong, it knocks me over.
"Holy shit!" Is my only response as I watch her vanish into the sky like a rocket. That doesn't make any sense! She went from standing still to turning into a living missile in less than a second! Forget being mad at her, which I still kinda am, but that was amazing! I gotta find out how she did that. As a person, I still think I hate her, but I gotta respect that ability of her's.
After letting that quick burst of adrenaline die down, I start picking up the wood from the ground, using my knife to slowly cut the larger pieces into small little chunks of wood. It may sound like that would take forever, but guess what? It did. I spent the next four hours cutting and moving wood, neatly stacking said wood outside in a pile. If this thing wasn't made 100% of wood, I'd be gagging so bad right now. Thankfully, it seems that is exactly what it is made of.
Does Fluttershy really need this wood? I mean, I'm homeless, so shouldn't I be the one who needs it?
So, with that thought in mind, I finish clearing out the house, and start carrying some of the wood a safe distance away from the house. I settled down in an open area a few hundred feet from the cottage, and start stacking up the wood in a specific way. Y'know, this is really twisted and morbid in a way, but I'm gonna try not to think about it.
"Fire... how do I make fire without flint?" I whisper to myself, remembering how Daring started her fire. It wouldn't be so hard if it wasn't for the fact that I currently lack any flint. Maybe there is something in my backpack that could help? I'll be like Dora or something, relying on this thing to hold everything I could ever want.
I go through a bunch of items from textbooks to electronics, but nothing that I could really use to create a fire. I could try the old rubbing two sticks thing together, but I'm not sure how well that actually works. So, that leaves me with two options. One, I could try venturing out, even though it is getting pretty dark, and try looking for a piece of flint. Or, secondly, I could just snoop around Fluttershy's cottage in hopes to find a lantern or something. Option is two is much safer than option one, but it also requires me to steal, which isn't something I necessarily want to do at the moment. However, If I don't have a fire for the night, I'll probably freeze to death in the winter air, not to mention the thin layer of snow covering most of the ground.
So, I decide on option two, breaking and entering, even if the breaking part is kind of already done for me.
I stand up slowly, placing a hand on my back and grunting as I do so. Damn, that Rainbow Dash can punch really hard. I kinda hope I never actually get into a real fight with her, especially if I'm unarmed. Pain aside, I start slowly walking back towards the cottage, rubbing my arms to try to stay warm. I can see my breath in the moonlight, signaling that it might just be colder than I thought. Maybe being in the C.F.D. for so long made me a little more immune to cold? I'd sure hope so. At least something good might come from that whole ordeal.
I slowly enter the cottage, grateful that it is rather warm in here, probably because of all the animals scattered around that have been hiding from me this whole time. This girl must have a weird thing for animals to have all of these in here. Either that, or she has a serious infestation problem.
I make my way up the stairs, each one creaking as I put my weight on them. I doubt they were made to hold this much weight on them, so I really hope they don't give out under me. Once upstairs, I find the bedroom, which thankfully has a lantern on the nightstand. But then I think of something else. Fluttershy is in the hospital, probably for a few days. Would she even notice if I slept here? It's rude enough that I'm stealing her stuff, but to actually sleep in her house without permission?
One gust of cold wind makes it's way inside from the front door, and it helps me to make up my mind. I decide to stay here for the night. To keep my conscience happy, I'll just sleep on the couch downstairs instead of her actual bed. At least that is a little better than actually taking over her entire bed.
I make my way back downstairs, lantern in hand to light up the room around me. The wind blows in harshly from the hole where the door used to be, and I decide it will be necessary for me to cover that with something, the problem is, I don't know what to use. Well, that is until I spot a bookcase pressed up against the wall pretty close to the door, or where the door used to be anyway. I walk over to it, setting down my backpack so it doesn't get in the way. I put all of my weight on the side of it, and it slowly starts to move, creating an obnoxious sound as it scrapes against the floor ever so slowly. I takes a good five minutes of pushing to get it to completely cover the hole. Most of that time was spent making sure the thing wouldn't fall over as I pushed it.
As soon as the last bit of the hole is covered, I feel the room instantly begin to heat up, which causes me to sigh in relief as I realize just how tired I am. I shuffle over to the couch, and sit down it before kicking off my shoes. I pull out my phone, and insert the battery, then wait for it to boot up. I want to spend a little time every now and then looking back at the few memories I still had of the old Earth. With only half a battery left, I'll have to be very conservative of the energy, or it'll run out in just a day or two.
Once it boots up, I close all background apps and turn the brightness completely down to conserve as much power as I possibly can. I open the photo app, and start scrolling through my camera roll, a small smile forming on my face whenever I see a familiar face. Some photos bring back some painful memories, but some only to serve to lighten my mood a bit. Photos of Olivia seem to do that the most. She was really the only friend I had for the past few years, so she was pretty much my other half. I sigh as I shut off the phone after about ten minutes, and lay down on the couch which is almost too small for me to fit on. Damn these ponies and their size.
Random thoughts rush through my mind as I try to think of anything that'll make me have a peaceful sleep. Olivia, my parents, my sister, brother, anything that'll calm my senses enough for me to drift off.
And you know what? It worked.
Before I drift off, I mumble out one last thing. One last statement of gratitude for the shelter I now reside in.
"Thanks Fluttershy."
