My three brothers were sitting near me. Work in the city guard was boring, it was quiet in the city. I was happy with that. For the most part Thasus, Orion, and Atlas seemed content with it as well. Although lately they were quiet and sported a frown on there faces rather than a smile. Atlas let out a heavy sigh. I looked up at him and Thasus and Orion were giving him the "not yet" look. "Okay I know that look. What aren't you telling me?" I asked breaking the silence. "Its nothing." Atlas said. "Crabapples! You three are hiding something from me and I want to know what it is." I demanded. They all looked at each other, "Nose Goes!" Thasus blurted. Atlas and Thasus put there hooves to there nose while Orion lagged behind. "I hate you guys." Orion said bitterly at losing. "We know you mean 'Love'." Atlas smiled cheerfully. He rolled his eyes, "Brother we need to talk about-" Orion started. "Your four!" The Staff Sergeant pointed at us, we shot up and went to attention. "We've received complaints from just outside of Canterlot. Someone is being overly disruptive and somewhat dangerous, go get whoever they are to quiet down." He slammed the door as he disappeared back into his office. We wasted no time getting out of the Precinct an on the road outside of Canterlot. After we got out on the road some we slowed our run to a walk. Their was something not being said between my brothers and I. Thasus, Orion, and Atlas were triplets. They each had a black coat with dark red going up their legs, dark red mane & tail that ended in black tips, and the bright red eye color. Only difference between them other than cutie mark was that Thasus was a Unicorn, Atlas was an Earth Pony, and Orion was a Pegasus. Orion had the dark red primaries on his wings. I myself was near opposite in color to Orion. White, fire red on the primaries of my wings and coming up my legs. That same fire red was the color of my mane but the tips faded to white like my coat. My Cutie Mark was of a Shield and crossed flaming double swords. What threw everypony off was that my eye color was a deep blue. "There is something you're all not telling me." I said breaking the silence. They all looked at each other, "Its about time we told you since it's happening sooner rather than later." Orion started. "What?" I asked. "The three of us are leaving Canterlot." "WHAT? You can't be serious." I protested. "Atlas and Thasus are transferring into the Equestrian Army, to different postings. I'm joining the Navy, to be a Wonderbolt." Orion said looking to the ground, "We were going to tell you soon. But then our paperwork went though. We leave next month." "If your leaving next month, I take it you have your orders?" "We do. I'm headed to the 501st Garrison south of the badlands in the Forest of Leota." Thasus informed me. "I'm going to the 99th in Manehatten. I'm hoping to become a Commando." Atlas said avoiding eye contact. "So you all decided to leave without me?" "Brother we've been together since you were born. I know being our half-brother has put a strain on you. Not that you noticed, but you've become calculating, cold even. You are not the same pony that we grew up with." The four of us stopped on the road, "We feel that being separated and on our own will do us all some good and let us grow. I know you've mentioned joining the Palace Guard on multiple occasions. Perhaps its time you applied?" Atlas explained. "I'll think about it. But it doesn't change the fact that you should have told me this sooner." I said blankly. BOOM "When we get back to our room well talk more, but right now we seem to have a situation." We continued along the road to investigate the noise. We came to a large decrepit barn that looked like it should have burned down long ago. As we got closer we could hear a pony inside making a fuss over something. "Hello? Sir!? We have received complaints about noise in the area. We need you to keep it down!" Thasus yelled from our place outside. I looked at Atlas to see him confused, "Something wrong?" I asked. "Does anypony else find it strange that there are no houses nearby?" Atlas said gesturing to the surrounding area. We all looked and sure enough there was hardly a house in sight. When we turned to bring our attention back to the barn a bronze colored unicorn stallion surged out of the barn in panic. "RUN AWAY!" He shouted in fear. We peered inside and there was a large metal contraption overheating and sending off bolts of energy. We ran after the bronze pony. Orion and I took to the skies and picked Thasus and Atlas up in the process. We flew hard and fast to catch up with the bronze pony at the road. The shock wave knocked the wind out of me and sent all of us falling down behind the road. The debris from the barn flew over us just as the fire did. We all sat there waiting for the rumbling and ringing in our ears to subside. I finally looked over the road to see the damage. There wasn't much fire left burning. Orion flew off to find a cloud with enough water to put out the remaining flames. "Well that didn't work." The bronze pony commented casually. "What do you mean 'That didn't work'?" Thasus started yelling at the pony. I was unsure if Thasus had noticed but the pony he was yelling at wasn't just bronze colored, he was actually made of Copper, Tin, Steel, and what looked like other metals. Under the metal plates I could see gears and pistons working to keep this mechanical pony moving. I found this pony highly intriguing. Through Thasus' yelling, the pony managed to agree to coming back to Canterlot so our Staff Sergeant could decide what to do with him. ☼ Then mechanical pony got off easy with just a minor fine and a warning. Apparently that barn was for his off sight experiments. The fact that he actually lives here in Canterlot is a little unsettling. After filling out the indecent reports I wen't on patrol through Canterlot on my own. There was little activity on the streets since it was getting late. I was flying along the northern edge of Canterlot. I looked to the Palace that also held the Canterlot Command. Perhaps it was time to advance in my career as well. I banked toward the Guard entrance to the palace. Landing just outside. The Guards outside eyed me a second before letting me pass. I went in and started toward Captain Shining Armor's office. Getting there took some time since I kept passing Sergeants on the way there and had to stand at attention every time they passed. I finally found his office and knocked three times in rapid succession. "Just a minute!" He yelled from behind the door. There were a few murmurs and giggles from behind the door. When Celestia's niece Lady Cadence stepped out I went to a polite bow, "Please stand." She said as she passed, "You may go into his office now." The Pegasus mare left the hall with a spring in her step. The Captain cleared his throat, "You can come in now!" The captain said from inside. I hurried inside and stood at attention. "At ease Private. How can I help you today?" "Sir, I would apply for the Palace Guard, Sir." I said plane. "What's your name?" He asked me. "Private Flame Strider, Canterlot Guard. Sir." I answered him. He seemed to think about it for a minute. "Flame Strider huh? I seem to remember your name crossing my desk. Don't you have brothers?" "Three Half-Brothers, Sir. There Triplets." "Interesting. Mind if I ask why there not here asking to join the Palace Guard also?" He asked in what seemed like genuine curiosity. "Thasus and Atlas are joining the Equestrian Army at different postings. Orion Is Joining the Equestrian Navy to be a Wonderbolt. Sir." "When are they leaving?" "End of the month." "Just before the Summer Sun Celebration then. I'll tell you what i'll do, since there are a few open spots on my roster. I'll talk to your commanding officer, have a look at your scores, and all round see of you'll be a good fit here. I'll send you a letter before the end of the month informing you if I've approved your transfer. If I have, you'll be joining the Palace Guard the same time your Brothers leave. Does that sound good?" "Yes Sir, Thank you Sir." I said. "Dismissed." He said waving a hoof. I saluted and then left his office. ☼ My shift was over and I was lying in the room I shared with my brothers in the city barracks. Typically there were only supposed to be two ponies to a room but Orion and I set up hammocks up higher to allow us to be in the same room as Thasus and Atlas. Soon enough they all walked in and immediately went to their sleeping spots. We sat there in silence. Probably because I was still tense about them not telling me. After about an hour of silence I spoke up, "I spoke to Captain Armor." All three sets of eyes were on me, "What did he say?" Atlas asked me. "He said that he'd talk to the Lieutenant and consider my transfer." I answered. They exchanged glances, "Strider, that's great! Your gonna be within the palace helping guard the princesses. That's something to celebrate." Thasus said excitedly. "I haven't gotten the position yet, besides its the same job as this one except inside the Palace. It's not like i'm gonna be in Celestia's Personal Guard." I said picking up a book. "But that is a mere stone's throw away from Personal Guard." Orion added. "Still not what i'm applying for." "You realize Captain Armor is known for doing more that what's needed. He likes to take newbies and build them up." Atlas made a fine point. "But i'm not a newbie." I argued. "In his eyes you are. Remember he is the youngest Guard to make captain AND get command of both the Palace Guard, and Celestia's Personal Guard." "Yeah, we've been out of the Academy for less than a year. The Captain's been in the thick of it for a little more than six years now." Thasus added. "Alright, alright! I get your points. Look its getting late and i'm sore from that explosion earlier. Can we call it a night? We have things to do tomorrow." "Fine." They said in unison. We settled into our beds and Thasus turned off the light. This month was gonna drag by. IITwo weeks until Thasus, Atlas, and Orion are to leave for there new assignments. With no word from Captain Armor yet about my transfer I was trying to keep busy. Not that it was difficult, my Lieutenant and Sergeants have been giving me an abundance of assignments around Canterlot as well as every courier duty that comes through the Precinct. Today was pretty quiet though, no courier jobs today, so that was good. My brothers were out taking care of a Pegasus causing trouble. "Private Strider!" The Staff Sergeant called from his office. I shot up from the bench I was sitting on and ran to his office. "Private, there seems to be a disturbance in a civilian tavern close to the Train Station. I want you to go down there and keep it from turning into a fight." "Only me, Sergeant?" I asked. "Yeah only you. That Tavern is controlled by a particularly influential family of criminals. I don't want them getting riled up. They won't harm the city guard though, because they don't want us looking closer at there off the book activities." "Sergeant?" "They have somewhat of a rep for trafficking in stolen goods and rare creatures. We can't touch them though because we don't have any reasonable evidence. If they attack a guard though we'll have a reason to investigate them. So they won't hurt you. I'm sure they'll calm down as soon as you walk in. Now get going!" I wasted no more time and hurried out of the Precinct. ☼ I decided to approach the tavern on hoof. The Sergeant wasn't kidding when he said things were getting out of hand. The noise from the arguments inside could be heard from the streets. On the door to the tavern door there was a sign that said "Closed for Private Function". I walked up to the door and waited a minute. I knocked loud and hard, the noise inside quieted down as there were a shuffles of hooves and the sound of some glass breaking. A small but bulky Earth pony mare opened the door, "Yes, can I help you?" "You can help me by keeping quiet." I said in a stern voice, "Your arguments are causing passerby's concern. I don't want to come back here with the Sergeant and Squad." "Understood Sir, we'll keep it down." She said rolling her eyes. She all but slammed the door in my face. A part of me wanted to sneak in and find out what was going on in there, but that isn't what I was here for. I got them to be quiet and that is what I did. I turned to go back to the Precinct. I walked the whole way delaying the inevitable assignment waiting for me. Everypony around me looked as if they were running late, the Summer Sun wasn't for another three weeks, and the celebration was being held in Ponyville this year. In spite of being born here i'll never understand Canterlot ponies. After a long walk up through Canterlot I finally got to the Precinct. Walking in I immediately knew something was off, my brothers were back and had a look on there face like they wanted to cheer something but were having a hard time keeping silent. The other hint was that there was a guard from Celestia's House Guard outside the Sergeant's Door. I started to walk over to my brothers. "What's going on?" I asked. In response all I got were hoof waves, snickers, and an occasional "No" or "Nope" through the laughs. So I waited there next to them for whatever was happening. The Precinct was surprisingly quiet, other than my brothers unbecoming noises. Time seemed to pass slowly. Whoever was in there talking with the Sergeant was certainly taking there sweet time. When the door opened the entire Precinct stood at attention. Captain Armor, my Lieutenant, a Lieutenant I didn't recognize, and my Sergeant stepped out. The Sergeant seemed to survey the room until his eyes fell on me. "Private Strider, report on the civil disturbance?" "All's quiet down near the train station, Sergeant." I answered. "Very good." He then turned to the Captain and the unfamiliar Lieutenant, "He's all your's Lieutenant." "Thank you. Private, would you follow the Captain and I." The Lieutenant ordered. "Yes Sir." Without another word I fell in line behind them as we left the Precinct. "I'll bet your wondering why you're leaving the City Guard now rather than later?" Captain Armor asked me. He asked that like I was supposed to know, "Yes sir." "Lieutenant Arrow, care to explain?" "Yes Captain. Private I understand you asked to join the Palace Guard. Correct?" Arrow asked me. "Yes Sir." "Captain Armor and I have reviewed you Service Record, Medical Record, Psyche Record, every report you've filed and we even asked around the City Guard about you. Do you want to know the conclusion we came to?" "Yes Sir." I was a little afraid to find out. "We determined that you would be best suited in Celestia's Personal Guard." WHAT!?!?! "Come again Sir?" "I take it your brother's didn't talk to you about this like they were supposed to?" Captain armor asked me holding back a laugh. "No Sir, they did not." They are gonna get it once I get back though. "Well today we just finished the paperwork for your transfer request. Lieutenant Arrow is gonna show you to you're new quarters, were gonna allow you the day to get settled and moved. Then you start tomorrow with your partner." "Partner Sir?" The City Guard didn't really use partners. It was so peaceful in the city, one guard could be used to investigate any disturbances. "Yes, you'll be sharing your room with another newcomer like yourself. Although she's been here for two months longer, so she'll be showing you the ropes." Captain Armor said as we got to the Guard Entrance to the palace, "This is where I take my leave. I have much preparation to do before the celebration." The Lieutenant and I saluted as the Captain walked off, "Follow me to your new quarters." The Lieutenant waved for me to follow. "Sir, Permission to speak freely?" I asked as we went through the Guard entrance to the palace and into the rather clean barracks. "Granted." "My brothers leave a few days before The Summer Sun Celebration. Will I be granted enough time to see them off, Sir?" I asked we were making our way through the barracks and past about a dozen rooms. "Captain Armor has informed me of your family matters. You will have that day off, but I expect you at your post on time the next day. Am I clear?" He asked as we stopped at the end of the hall in front of the door. "Understood sir." "Good. This is your room..." Room 14, "Your partner should already be inside, as well as your new set of armor. Get acquainted with your partner, she was instructed to help you with moving in." "Understood Sir." "One last thing before I leave. Private, it might be a good idea to loosen up a little." He turned and left not allowing me to saluted him as he left. "Loosen up"? What did that mean? I shrugged it off and turned my attention to the door in front of me. I took a deep breath and knocked three times, no answer. I knocked again, no answer. I opened the door slowly and peered inside the room. It wasn't cramped like the room I had shared with my brothers. It had beds, a bathroom for the two of us, a table & chairs, shelves above each bed, footlockers and wall lockers. I looked around and soon found my new partner on her bed. Unicorn, she was white, more so than I, she had a pale Icy blue colored mane & tail, and equally blue colored eyes. Her cutie mark was of an energized snowflake. She was deep within a book, that explained why she didn't answer the door, Thasus did the same on occasion. "Excuse me?" "Hold on." She said as she put a hoof up to silence me as she speed up her reading. One she finished she closed the book and looked at me, "Oh..." She said eyeing me, "If I wasn't spoken for, i'd say you were a prime example of stallion." My eyes went wide and avoided eye contact, "Oh, well thanks I guess. Um, Lieutenant Arrow said i'd be staying here." She gasped with excitement and jumped over to where I was standing, "YOUR Flame Strider?! I thought they were gonna stick me with some Earth Pony. I don't have anything against earth ponies, there just a little boring. My name is Snow by the way." "Right, a pleasure to meet you." I moved around her and over to my wall locker and opened it. There was and armor stand, clothing rack, top shelf, and a mirror. A cardboard box sat at the bottom of the locker, "What's this?" I asked her. "Oh that's your new armor. I was supposed to tell you what to do with your old set." She taped her chin with a hoof, "Oh, right. You are supposed to put the new set on to get familiar with the weight. Then put the old set into the box, seal it, then take it to the mail room. That way it can be taken to requisitions." "Alright then." I took the armor out of the box and laid it out onto my bed. I then turned my attention to the armor I was currently wearing slowly but surely getting piece by piece off and into the box. Snow giggled at my slow progress, "Here let me help you." She lit up her horn and in a manner of seconds all of my armor was off and in the box. "Oh my." Snow said eyeing me again, and staring. I felt my face heat up, I cleared my throat and shifted my wings uncomfortably, "Um Snow, if you wouldn't mind?" I said angling my head toward the new set of armor. "I know. I don't get to see stallions without there armor on much." She eyed me up a few seconds longer before picking up the new armor set and putting it on me, "Happy?" "Much." I took note of my armor. It covered more than my old armor, the hoof-guards went halfway up my legs, and the armor covered my entire torso. The helmet also had plates that went down the backside of my neck. While I was busy looking at myself in the mirror I didn't notice Snow behind me, "Snow, would... whoa?" Snow had put her armor on, but instead of the heavy plates that I had, she had on light chainmail, mixed with leather and fabrics. "Where did you get that armor? I've never seen it before." I was genuinely curious because it looked kinda like a battle dress that are in the old books. "It was special made for me because of my skill set." "What skills are those?" "I'm a Cryomancer. It means I can make whatever I want out of ice, when I want. For example..." Snow manefested a small snowstorm in the room in an instant, without the clouds. Just as quickly she made it vanish leaving no more than cold air in it's place. "That's impressive." I said sincerely. "Yeah, i'm aware. Now lets not waste anymore time. Lets go get your things so I can give you a brief tour of the castle." Snow said dragging me along with her magic. Tall Tale IIII Snow and I were walking out of the palace to go get my things. She seemed to be beaming with happiness. If she wasn't in armor, she'd be bouncing. We got into the streets and the silence between us maintained, other than Snow's humming. Captain Armor and Lieutenant Arrow wanted me to get to know this pony, even though I could go without doing so. Although knowing Officers, they'll likely quiz me to see if I took them seriously or not. "So you said you were 'Spoken for'. What did you mean by that?" Why did I chose to ask that? Snow looked at me with a devious look, "Why you asking? Trying to see if you got a chance?" "No. Just trying to have a conversation." "Well if you must know, I do have a Stallionfriend he is an Earth Pony named Summit from a wealthy family here in Canterlot." She said proudly. "Earth Pony? I thought you said Earth Ponies were boring?" I said getting her with her own words. Her eyes went wide and then she glared, "That was in reference to working with them, not having a relationship with them." "I see." I said trying not to laugh. "Okay wise guy, my turn to ask. Do you have anypony special in your life?" She asked smiling again. "No. It's been just me and my brothers for the most part. They have had some relationships, but they were all short lived. I have some cousins in Manehatten that i'm close with." I looked at her, and she was looking at me with her icy eyes expecting more, "That's it." "Interesting. Well as your new friend and partner, it is my task to find you a mare." She meant it. "Oh please, that's not necessary." I said trying to get her to stop her train of thought. "Oh come on. Having a Wing Mare is better than having a Wing Stallion." She said bouncing still. "There Isn't any way to convince you to NOT be my matchmaker is there?" I asked. "Nope, your suck with me Flame Strider." I sighed in defeat, "Fine. Let's just hurry and get my things." ☼ I opened the door to my brother's quarters. Thankfully they were out, "Alright let's hurry and get my things. Those shelves up there and this footlocker." I said pointing with my wing. i got to work on the footlocker. Snow levitated my items off of the shelf, "Pony Anatomy: Pressure Points & Weak Spots, Bestiary, Fighting forms, The Royal Guard Handbook? You read this stuff?" "Yeah why is that a problem?" "It is for you." Thasus said from behind me. I spun around to see my brothers standing there at the door, "So who's this?" Atlas asked. "Atlas, Thasus, Orion, meet Snow. Snow, meet my brothers." I said blankly. "Why do they look almost identical?" Snow asked. "Were Triplets." Orion stated. "Okay cool you all have met, can we get back to work?" I said a little annoyed. Orion picked that up. "Whoa, Strider is that annoyance in your voice?" He asked. "No." "It is, it totally is." "We let him go for an hour and you've already gotten him annoyed? What's your secret?" Thasus asked Snow. "I think its part of being a mare. A little bit of embarrassment, a dash of the unexpected, and you can get him blushing." Snow giggled. "Well then I ask that you keep it up. Say any chance your single? Strider needs a date." Thasus mentioned. I could feel my face go red as I listened in. "We've already discussed that I have a stallionfriend, but I did tell Strider that I'd help him find a mare whether he wanted one or not." "Not quite the conversation we had, but that sums it up." I said putting the final item into my saddlebags, "Well my brothers, sorry to cut this short but we must be off." "Oh no you don't." Orion started, "Were spending the day with you." "Agreed. So where we going?" Thasus asked. "How about some dinner before me and Strider go back to the palace?" Snow suggested. "Why can't we go to the palace with you?" Atlas asked her. "Because you aren't on the guest list, and your not a Palace Guard or a Personal Guard like us." Snow informed him. "I see. So where we eating?" "How about Doughnut Joe's?" Orion suggested. "Doughnuts for dinner? No, we should ask Strider where were going, since were celebrating the advancement of his career." Thasus said bringing all eyes to me. I was about to protest, then I remembered a place close to the palace that I passed once while on patrol, "The Copper Wolf." "Where is that?" Orion asked. "Close to the palace. Come on let's go." ☼ We were at the Copper Wolf Tavern. None of us were in our armor anymore, Snow and I made a quick stop to the barracks to put my things down and take off our armor. We drew some short glances from the other patrons. We all sat at a table close to the door. My brothers and Snow were having fun talking while we waited for our drinks. I was busy scanning the crowd. The bartender was particularly interested in a customer at the far end of the bar, and there were several patrons sitting around the room, more interested in the crowd rather than their drinks. "What do you think Strider?" Snow asked me. I wasn't paying any attention, "What do I think what?" "What would you say if Equestria was at war with another country like the Griffons, Deer, or The Dragons for that matter?" Atlas asked. "I'd say the only real challenge out of the three of those options would be the Dragons. The other two would pose a threat sure, but none like the dragons would." "Doesn't Celestia's Star Student have a baby dragon?" Snow asked not expecting an answer. "She does, I've met the both of them at the Canterlot library. That reminds me of something I wanted to talk to you three about." Thasus started, "You know how I like to read?" "Yes." Orion, Atlas, and I all said at once. Snow quietly sipped her cider while listening. "Well while I was in the library a few months back I came across a curious bit of magic. It's the mixture of a potion and magic." "What does it do?" Atlas asked curiously. "It can bring a group of ponies together in a sort of magically linked way, a bonding potion of sorts. At first I didn't understand any of it. That is how I found Celestia's Student in fact, I had seen her in the library so much I decided to ask her for help, she took the time to give me quite the lecture and explain it to me. Her dragon fell asleep at the start." Thasus elaborated. "Not to quote Atlas, but 'What does it do?'" I asked. "If we drink this magically enhanced potion I speak of, we will be able to sense when one of us is happy or sad, calm or excited, in pain or not. For example; If I was depressed about something, you three would be able to sense my emotions. You would not feel said emotions, you would just know something is off. Also lying would be out of the question between each other." "How would we be able to tell the difference between each other?" Atlas asked. "The book was unclear about that part, but Twilight said we'd just know." Thasus finished. "Twilight?" Snow asked. "Celestia's Student. Please Keep up Snow." Orion said to her in a tone she didn't like, Snow huffed in response. "So I was thinking in these last few weeks I could make the potion, and at the train station before we go our separate ways we could drink it." Thasus suggested. "If I could express a concern?" Snow chimed in, "If somepony decided to use mind control on Strider here to get close to the princess, wouldn't that make you three also under said control?" "Just the opposite actually. The caster of the mind control spell would need to be either incredibly powerful or have all four of us together to go under the control spell at the same time." Thasus said excitedly, "Not like there will ever be a need for that little feature of the spell." "Knock." Atlas said emotionless. Thasus knocked on the table three times with a hoof. "What was that?" Snow inquired. "We don't like to jinx things. Bad karma vs good karma. Were all a little superstitious." Orion explained. "Your the weirdest bunch of ponies I've met since moving here." Snow said going back to her drink. "So anyway what do you think about the spell?" Thasus asked eager for our approval for it. "I'm in." Orion said confidently. "Me too." Atlas said smiling. They all turned to me, waiting for my answer. "If you think it would be a good thing for us to do, then i'm in." I gave them a shrug of my shoulders. I looked at the time, eleven forty-five. "Perhaps Its time we called it a night?" Looking at the time as well, they all nodded. Thasus went and settled the tab while we waited by the door. After leaving we went in separate directions, Snow and I to the Palace Barracks, my brothers to the City Barracks. Along the walk Snow became excessively tired and began to fall asleep while walking, forcing me to poke her whenever she got close to a wall. Once in our room, I made sure Snow was in her bunk before I went to sleep. I couldn't sleep. I hadn't slept on a mattress in over a year for one. Secondly I was nervous about tomorrow. I looked over at the table that held my belongings that needed to be put away. I got up and started organizing my things. I had two suit coats for formal wear that I hung up in the wall locker, as well as a red & black wool scarf. I dident have anything to put into my footlocker yet. I started putting my books on the shelf above my bed in order. I got to the bottom of the stack of small books. There sat a large book with no title or markings of any kind, it only had a Featherlock on it. A Featherlock is a unique Cloudsdale instrument. It will only unlock to the feathers of its owner. Since this one was mine, I opened it. This book however was not a book. It was hollow and held some precious items of mine. Mostly old letters, a pair of used Wonderbolt tickets, a 3rd place ribbon, and three pictures. One picture of me and my brothers in front of the Guard Recruiting office, a picture of all my cousins from Cloudsdale, and a rather old picture of my mother Cloud Fire in her youth. My coat and mane colors were near exact to my mother, only difference were that again my eyes are blue. Shaking off the feelings I was getting by looking at the old items, I put them back into the false book, locked it, and put it among the real books. Feeling tired I put down my things to be taken care of at a later time and crawled back into my bunk. Still worried about what morning would bring but not caring at the moment. Tall Tale IIIV I woke up to Snow poking me and speaking through a yawn, "Strider... We need to get up so we can see the duty roster." I grumbled and rolled over trying to ignore her. That is until a cold shock went up my spine, "Whoa!" I exclaimed as I shot up out of bed. Snow had put a layer of ice on my back, "Not cool." Snow smiled as she was pleased with herself. I went over to my locker and started to dawn my armor as Snow did the same. Celestia had yet to raise the sun so it was still dark out. With our armor on we headed out into the hall. Several other guards were also emerging from their rooms. I had the box with my old armor on my back, on the way to the Mess Hall I dropped it off in the mail room. Once in the mess hall we got our trays and stood in line. I got Biscuits & Gravy, little bits of carrot were in the gravy. Waking up was taking longer than I wanted it to. While I ate my breakfast I couldn't help but hear some of the conversations around the Mess Hall. There were Guards trading days off, among other topics. A conversation behind me caught my ear. "She looks like a tramp, posing as a guard." A mare said. I adjusted my ears to listen better. "I know, and I've never seen armor like that before. I'll bet she slept around to get that approved." A Guard commented. It was obvious they were talking about Snow, she was the only Guard in here with different armor. I would have listened further but they got up and left. "Did you hear Dragons from the dragon kingdom were spotted landing in Horseshoe Bay?" I heard a Guard say, It came from the one across the table from me. I put myself into the conversation, "Is it 'A Dragon' or 'Dragons' as in more than one?" I asked him. "Two mature dragons from the dragon kingdom." "Really?" "Yeah, and Equestria isn't exactly on the best of terms with their King. So a platoon from the local Army outpost went to see if they would come quietly." "How'd that end?" A Guard next to me asked. "It didn't. When they got there, nopony was there. Just scorch marks, clawed trees, and wagon tracks." "Somepony took them?" "Or Something, but that's what it looks like." The guard concluded. I was extremely curious as to who or what could overpower a dragon. I was so interested in the missing dragons, that I almost hadn't noticed Snow sit back down or get up for that matter. "So I figured out what our orders are for the next few weeks." Snow said quickly and with a wide smile. "How many cups of coffee have you had?" I asked her. "Three. Anyway we are patrolling the Canterlot gardens! In addition to that we have to make sure tour groups don't get lost in the maze!" "At least that's quiet." "Not with me it isn't!" "Of course why did I think any different?" I stood up and took my tray and put it onto the stack of used ones, "After you." I said letting Snow take the lead. She practically bounced the whole way to the gardens. Probably because of the coffee. We had to make our way though the palace to get to the gardens. I was surprised at how many stained glass windows, each one recording a major historical event in Equestria. One of these I recognized, it recorded the Citizens of Canterlot and Celestia pushing back a siege from forces of shadow. That battle was another reminder that AlIcorns aren't all powerful. It took every able citizen and the princess to push back the enemy. It's something ponies frequently forget about, that Equestria isn't as safe as they think it is. It takes the blood and sweat of the Guard and the Equestrian Army to make it seem as safe as it is. Snow and I finally got out to the garden, "Alright here is my plan. I'll take the tour groups through the maze since I've done it before and enjoy doing it. While you'll need to learn the maze route eventually, it is your first day so i'll do it." "I have a question. Why are we doing this? Shouldn't the palace guard be doing it? We're Celestia's personal guard shouldn't we be at her side?" I asked genuinely curious. "One: Were doing this because were still new. Two: The palace guard can only do so much since there are always a few extra Personal Guards we pick up for them. Three: Don't worry about Celestia, she always has two guards by her side." Snow trotted off leaving me in the less traversed area of the Gardens. I let out a sigh and went about walking around the garden. ☼ Snow had come by to check on me a few times since this morning. She had helped at least seven tour groups into and out of the maze without incident. I had memorized every part of the garden on this side. At this point I wanted a change of scenery already, and for what I assumed was a Fox to leave me alone. On what was approximately my twenty third walk through of the garden a white and black fox had started following me. Now it was swatting at my hooves and making small noises to get me to play with him or her. "Eighty Seven." I mumbled to myself as I continued walking. I'll admit, I was board. Until I heard what sounded like magic past some bushes. I worked my way around to the other side to see who it was. I got to the other side of the plants only to see what was the last of a tail disappear behind a tree. I continued to follow. The fox continued to follow me but stayed quiet thankfully. I kept getting small glimpses of this pony's tail. Whoever they were they were leading me to a different part of the garden that I hadn't seen yet. The path I was on came to a halt when I came to a clear area that overlooked the city. Canterlot was a big place, looking in from outside of the city you would think it was small, but that was not the case. I didn't see the pony I was looking for. "Well this was a waste of time." I said looking at the fox, who was looking past me to my left. I followed it's eyes, it was looking at Celestia. My first instinct was to go back, that is until I realized I hadn't paid enough attention to go back myself. I would have to ask her guard... Where were her Guards? Then it dawned on me that the magic I heard was probably her teleporting out of her office and into the gardens. Of course it was, who else has the power to teleport? Figuring it was far more rude to sit just here and watch her I approached, when I got close I made my presence known, I bowed before speaking, "Your Highness?" I said in a calm voice so I didn't startle her. She seemed to jump a little anyway, "Oh, I didn't realize Lieutenant Arrow was already looking for me. You may rise." I stood tall like a guard is supposed to, "He is not yet. When you came into the garden I followed you not knowing it was you Princess." "You are forgiven for following me, but I must ask why you did not simply return to your post?" Celestia asked. "I noticed no guards accompanied you." I paused, "Also other than flying, I don't know how to get back." Celestia gave out a small laugh, "I see, well I'm not ready to go back just yet but you are welcome to be of company while you wait." She tapped her hoof on the ground next to her signaling me to sit next to her. "Yes Princess." I quietly sat down next to her and stayed quiet. "What's your name?" She asked in a kind voice. "Private Strider." "I didn't ask for your rank, I asked for you name." It was becoming apparent that she was trying to be friendly. "Flame Strider. But most just call me Strider." "A pleasure to meet you. You are new to my guard?" "Yes Princess. It is my first day on this assignment." "Well I welcome you." She said with a smile. We sat there in silence for what seemed like forever. It definitely seemed like there was something on her mind but I wasn't going to pry. "I like to come here for a bit of quiet time." She said breaking the silence. "The Palace isn't quiet Princess?" "It's too quiet sometimes. Out here I can think on more important matters. The garden has a certain... natural enchantment to it where you can just think clearly. Do you understand?" "I might Princess." I did agree that this place was peaceful, and that it was definitely a good place to go if you were feeling overwhelmed or stressed. The princess and I sat in silence for another long minute. Then the fox piped up, "Arf!" Celestia laughed at it, "It seems like you've made a friend there." "It just kinda started following me. Now it won't leave me alone." I told the princess. "She might want to stay with you." She said with a laugh. "That isn't exactly regulation to have a pet in the barracks Princess." "True, but if you were allowed to keep her, what would you name her?" Celestia asked smiling as the fox had gotten her forelegs over my wings to dangle there. I took the fox in my hooves, and held her there for a minute looking at her happy face, "Mira." I said turning my head to the princess. Celestia just smiled, her horn glowed quickly getting her attention, "It seems Lieutenant Arrow as discovered that I am not where he thought I was. Now if you'll follow me I will lead you out." "Yes Princess." I followed two paces behind and one to the side. Mira however found it fun to run circles around the Princess and I. This time I payed attention on the way back through the garden. The path went through a fairly secluded part of the gardens. No wonder I hadn't seen the walkway to get in, It was hidden among a hedge. When we got back to the area of the gardens I was supposed to be guarding; Lieutenant Arrow, Snow and two other Personal Guards were waiting. I assumed the two others were supposed to be guarding Celestia. Everypony bowed at the sight of Celestia while I followed her. "Rise my ponies." Celestia said. When Arrow stood and saw me, he looked angry, "Princess, you had me worried for a minute there. You didn't tell any of your guards where you were going." I couldn't tell for sure but Celestia seemed slightly irritated, "And I shouldn't have to tell you where I go every second of the day. I can take care of myself, and had done so before the Guard was formed. To put you at ease however, Private Strider here heard me enter the gardens and kept me company while I got some fresh air." Celestia gave the Lieutenant a chance to speak, instead he looked at me. When he went to speak he was cut off, "I would like you to allow Private Strider to keep this Fox with him in the barracks as a pet." She gestured to Mira, "I'm considering it one of my little harmless social experiments. Captain Armor knows I like to conduct those from time-to-time. Speaking of the Captain, I would Like to speak with him. I will allow you a word with your subordinate, then we must go see the Captain." Celestia walked over to some doors to wait for a moment. Lieutenant Arrow walked up to me rubbing his forehead, "Since you and Private Snow were to be off the rest of the day anyway, I suggest you go get your pet a few necessities. I will be by your room this evening to have a word with you." I said nothing and Just saluted him as he went to follow the princess. Snow came up to me once the Princess and the Lieutenant were gone, here eyes wide with surprise, "What did you do while I was gone?" "I think I made a friend." I said still unsure what the Princess just did for me. ☼ Snow and I were walking through Canterlot after making a quick stop at our room to take off our armor. Mira was on my back nestled between my wings taking a nap. I just finished explaining to Snow what had happened with Princess Celestia. "You really did make a friend, and an important one at that!" Snow exclaimed stating the obvious. "Didn't we establish that already?" "Yeah but It's just cool to hear that Celestia sometimes wants a break and silence just like any other pony." "If only some ponies could be quiet." I said referring to her. "Hey watch it Mister, or you'll end up with ice in your bed." Snow said In a playfully threatening tone. I just rolled my eyes, "Alright Canterlot Is supposed to have a pet store around here somewhere." I was having some trouble finding it. I had passed it several times while patrolling the city. "Maybe its that way?" Snow pointed down another street that definitely looked like my old patrol route. "Lets try it." We continued down the street. Snow insisted we stop and look at the window displays. She was particularly interested in every blue colored or themed dress she saw, she was always disappointed when she saw the price tags. That was confusing, considering she had a wealthy stallionfriend. "Snow can I ask you a question?" I asked trying not to sound concerned. She smiled trying to hide her disappointment, "Yeah, sure." "Why is it that whenever you look at one of those dresses back there you look a little sad afterward?" "Oh you noticed that did ya? Well you know that stallionfriend I mentioned?" "I remember." "He's a great pony and all, It's just he never get's me anything when it doesn't suit him as well. I have one dress that doesn't exactly look good on me. I wear it out when he and I do go out on our dates that always seem to fall on important events around Canterlot." "It sounds to me like your not exactly happy with your relationship. Am I wrong?" I asked. She looked at me a little confused, "Who are you to be giving me relationship advice?" "I've read enough books to know that your relationship isn't how it's supposed to work." At first it seemed as if she would argue, "Yeah, you're probably right." I spotted the pet shop a short distance away, but stopped to talk to Snow, "You know you don't have to be in the room when the lieutenant comes to talk to me. Maybe now would be a good time to go have a chat with your stallionfriend about your relationship?" I suggested. She looked at me for a moment. Then hope filled her eyes, "Your right! I'm gonna go talk to him right now!" Snow had started off down the street. She was about to round a corner when she stopped. It looked as if she wanted to hurry off and go see him but instead she ran back over to me. She hugged me, "Thank you." When she let go she wasted no more time and ran off. I watched her leave. Mira let out a small whine, and I looked at her, "What?" "Arf!" "Why am I talking to you? Let's just get you your things and go back to the room." I turned toward the pet shop to continue on my task. ☼ The pet store clerk was very informative on how to care for Mira. I had gotten Mira a litter-box that I put into the bathroom, Wet Cat food, dry dog food, plenty of toys, and treats for when she's been good. I was currently holding down a rope toy while Mira tried to get it out from under my hoof. I was actually having fun with her failed efforts. I heard a knock on the door and I stood but didn't let the rope toy out from under my hoof. Captain Armor let himself in. I stiffened to attention and saluted him. "At Ease Strider. I'm here in the Lieutenant's place, he said he was gonna talk to you about what happened today and Celestia has filled me in on exactly what happened as well, despite the Lieutenants limited view." "Sir?" "It as become apparent that Lieutenant Arrow as been commanding the Personal Guard a little too directly. He is supposed to let his NCO's do that while he oversees them. That is not what has been happening." A blue Pegasus guard entered the room, "This is Sergeant Skyquake, he is your squad's NCO. Lieutenant Arrow has been reminded that he is not allowed to command his guards directly. That will be up to Skyquake here. Now I will let the Sergeant have a word with you, while I go attend to my other duties." Skyquake and I saluted the captain as he left. Then It was just me, Mira, and the Sergeant. "I see, you've already made the Fox comfortable. Would you give it the toy already its difficult to watch it struggle like that." As he instructed i lifted my hoof that held the rope, Mira took it in her mouth, and held it high in victory. "Anyway, I want to make a Change in the duty roster. None of the guards in the two platoons we have, have made any kind of bond with Celestia. The only pony she trusts in whole is the Captain. That was as of yesterday, now she seems to trust you on some sort of level. I'm allowing you and you're partner to take over the afternoon shift to guard Celestia herself." I was screaming in fear inside my head, "Thank You Sir, I will inform Private Snow upon her return." "Where is she anyway?" "Out with her stallionfriend, setting her relationship with him straight." I said honestly. "That would be my queue to leave." Skyquake turned and left the room. I looked down at Mira, who had a curious look on her face. "Snow is gonna be ecstatic, to hear about this." Tall Tale IIIV To say that Snow was ecstatic was an understatement. She was having a hard time standing still on duty. We had been standing guard with Celestia for a little over three weeks. It was largely uneventful. However while Snow loved the trips to Celestia's school, it was probably my least favorite part of the position. Celestia kept using me as the Guinea Pig during the demonstrations for her students. Celestia and her students alike were quite intrigued with Snow's Cryomancy and it's limitations, one purple unicorn in particular seemed to be full of questions. The final preparations for the summer sun celebration were being made. Today was the day Thasus, Atlas, and Orion were leaving. I had the day off but since Snow was working today I was gonna go see if they would let me work anyway in the evening. I was already at my brothers room. It was bare and cold waiting for it's next resident. We were standing there about to leave for the train station. "It was weird with you not being here with us, but at least you were in the same city. Now none of us are gonna have our backs if we run into trouble." Orion said to me. "Well I'm sure it won't be so bad. Besides this just shows how comfortable we've gotten. A guard needs to be alert at all times, not comfortable." Atlas said in a way that made him sound wise. We started to head out, "When did you get wise?" I asked him. "It's a one time thing I can assure you." Atlas said with a laugh. We walked out into the streets, "So what do you all have to do when you get to your destinations?" I asked as we walked. "I have to find Captain Spitfire's training squad. Apparently she and the other Alpha Wonderbolts are training the applicants for the new Delta squad of the Wonderbolts. There are over fifty applicants, but only four will be given the rank and position. Training starts just after the Summer Sun Celebration, but they want us there before hand to get in shape." Orion finished explaining as we started down some stairs. "That's cool. I myself have to go and report to the 99th under Brigadier General Obsidion's command. I guess what's happening is they are letting all of their veterans retire from their Commando Squad, but before they go into retirement they are gonna train all of us up to their standards. I was luckily offered the position and I jumped at it. From what I hear there were only nine ponies recruited for this." Atlas finished as we started down the last long street to the train station. "You two get to train first. I'm going to be in the middle of the second most dangerous forest in the world." Thasus started. "What forest is the most dangerous?" I asked. "The Everfree Forest is number one, but only if you go inside. Because of the forest the 501st is the most battle experienced battalion in the Equestrian Army. I expect my talent to shoot concentrated plasma bolts will not go to waste. General Grunt is a fierce tactician and inspiring leader. It will be an honor to serve under him and his staff." Thasus finished as we entered the station. The trains were just arriving, and would take about thirty minutes to off load their passengers, "Looks like we have some time." I said stating the obvious. "I plan on using that time." Thasus said tuning to the rest of us, "I have finished that potion of I told you guys about." "There's a 'but' isn't there?" Orion asked with a blank face. We all knew he was right. "But..." There it is, "...in order for the potion to work completely it needs one last ingredient." Thasus looked hesitant. "Were not gonna like it, are we?" I asked. He shook his head, "It needs blood from all of us to work." Thasus used his magic to pull out the Potion, three glasses, a small but sharp knife and a few bandages. "You still want to do this?" Atlas and Orion looked like they were about to back out. I took a deep breath, "I'm still in..." I held out a hoof, "Take what you need." Thasus seemed surprised that I was the first to volunteer, "Alright." He levitated the knife and the potion over to my hoof as I looked away. I felt the small cut of the knife, and my blood slowly dripping out. After a few seconds, Thasus tightly wrapped my hoof in a bandage. He then turned to Orion and Atlas. "Let's get this over with." Orion said, holding out his hoof and looking away like I did. Atlas followed suit. Once Thasus had collected our blood, he added his to the mix and stirred. The potion had gone from a clear blue to a dark purple. Once It was clear that it was mixed in properly, Thasus poured an even amount into each glass while leaving an equally even amount in the bottle for himself. We all looked hesitantly at the potion, "On three?" I asked. They nodded in agreement. "One. Two. Bottoms Up!" We all lifted the potion to our lips and drank it as fast as we could. "That was terrible!" Atlas said as he finished. Orion was coughing and Thasus was trying to keep it down. "Thasus, no more potions please. Ever!" I said recovering from the horrible aftertaste. "Absolutely no problem there." Thasus managed to get out between gags. After recovering from the bad tasting potion, we sat and waited for the trains to start boarding. I was unsure if the potion worked or not but I knew that we were all avoiding saying goodbye. We sat there quietly out of everypony's way. Orion didn't really have to wait, flying to Cloudsdale didn't take long, he just wanted to spend as much time with all of us as he could before leaving. I was grateful that he waited. "All Aboard!" The Conductors yelled. The moment we were dreading came into reality. We stood and looked at each other waiting for one of us to say something. Instead Orion just put his wings out and started giving out the brotherly hugs. We all followed suit. "Last Call, All Aboard!" The conductors yelled. Without saying anything Atlas and Thasus went to board their trains. Orion and I waited there for another minute. When the train whistle blew and the trains lurched forward, Orion put a wing on my shoulder. I returned the gesture. We nodded and I withdrew my wing and took a step back. Orion spread his wings and with a powerful stroke he took to they sky and flew on the wind toward Cloudsdale. I couldn't help but feel a bit fear and sadness as I stood there and watched my brothers leave. ☼ I was back at the palace now. I had already cleared working my normal shift with Sergeant Skyquake. I was about fifteen minutes late, but the pony that was supposed to be relieving me today would be happy they had only worked for fifteen minutes. I got to Celestia's door, It was slightly open like it was normally. Taking a deep breath and Knocked. "Come in." I heard Celestia say. Knowing they would likely interrogate me if I said anything, i just went to the guard in my spot. "You are Relieved." I said as I settled next to him. He looked confused, but nodded and left Celestia's office. I could feel Celestia looking at me. Snow definitely wanted to. Luckily; Raven, Celestia's assistant, and Kibitz the royal scheduling adviser were keeping Celestia busy for the moment. All I had to do was stand here at attention. Celestia looked as if she wanted to get through signing whatever papers she was working on ASAP. "Here." Raven said pointing to the parchment. Celestia signed. "Here." Raven said again. Celestia signed again. "Here." Raven repeated. Celestia repeated the motion over and over. Raven flipped over a paper, "Lastly, Here." When Celestia signed the last line Kibitz spoke up. "Wonderful princess, now that we have that bit of unpleasantness out of the way You have an appointment to speak to your school faculty for what to do after the school break." "How far ahead of the schedule are we?" Celestia asked him. He used his magic to pull a pocket watch from his coat, "About thirty minutes Princess. Why do you ask?" "I would like a moment of quiet with my guards. Once its time to resume the schedule just knock on the door please." Celestia asked of him kindly. "Yes Princess." Horseapples, I knew what was coming. "Private Snow, Private Flame Strider, At Ease." Celestia ordered. "You are supposed to be at home." Snow was already in Overbearing Partner mode. "That is what I thought as well. You were given the day off so you could see you brothers off. What happened?" Celestia asked. It was moments like this when I hated that I had made friends with the Princess. "I did see them off. Orion Is likely Checking in with Captain Spitfire now. Thasus and Atlas are probably half-way through the train ride." "How are you feeling?" Celestia came around the desk. That was a good question, I felt a lot of things. Fear, Loneliness, I felt as if peaces of me were worlds apart. "Honestly? My brothers are spread out across Equestria. I'm not exactly feeling whole right now. The only ponies I know in Canterlot are you two. My brother's family moved to Vanhoover, and our mother's family lives in Coudsdale. Mira appears to be the closest thing I have to family I have here right now." I could feel waterworks coming up, but I fought against them. I couldn't see Snow's or Celestia's face because I was looking at the floor. "When the Night Guards come to relieve you. I want you two to go home and just sleep, read a book, and take care of Mira. Take time to think about your brothers, and who you consider as family." Celestia said to me, it almost sounded like an order. 'Consider as Family'? "Is that an order Princess?" I asked picking up my head. "It's an order from your friend..." Celestia paused, "Who also happens to be a Princess." She smiled. "Now we have a little time before Kibitz knocks. Snow help Strider collect himself while I straiten up my office some." "Isn't there Palace Staff for that?" Snow asked as she started to look me over checking my armor straps making sure I was Dress-Right-Dress. "There is but they always put things in the wrong place. No matter how many times I go over it with them, some things are just better if you do them yourself." Celestia laughed and we laughed with her. ☼ The Eve of The Summer Sun Celebration. This day held another meaning for me however. My brother's knew I didn't like to celebrate it but that didn't stop them from giving me Birthday Cards or In this case letters. That Is what I was holding in my hooves, I hadn't opened them yet. I received others from my Cousins, Aunts, and Uncles in Cloudsdale, but they weren't on my priority list at the moment. Only the one from my mom was number one. My darling colt, Happy Birthday! If I know my colt as well as I think I do, you'll be opening this up the day of your birthday. Your brother stopped in to see me just before he went off to train for the Wonderbolts. He told me what you colts were up to and where you were going. While I'm happy for the lot of you, I wish you'd come see your mother more often. Orion tells me you made it into Celestia's Personal Guard. I'm proud of you for making it farther in the guard than I did. Now since I know the Summer Sun Celebration is being held in Ponyville this year I expect to see you here. If I don't see you you won't like what I do. See you soon. If I know my mother she'll do something drastic just to see me, for a Flightless Veteran Pegasus she still had a lot of fire in that soul of her's and it wasn't cooling down anytime soon. I moved on to my brothers letters, Thasus' was first, Flame Strider, Happy Birthday Little Brother. Your not gonna believe what happened to me as soon as I got to the Watchtower. It was under attack! The resupply convoy I was with joined the fight as soon as we saw what was happening, A hoard of Timberwolves had decided to attack. It was short lived as General Grunt lead a squad of Unicorn Pyromancers in a counter assault on the Timberwolves driving them back into the forest! I just helped with the few wounded there were. How are things with Snow? Is she still with that other stallion? Any new friends? The potion Is working for me, so I can tell your a little sad. Write me back little brother. It was nice to hear he was liking it there so far. Atlas was next, Flame Strider, I can't go into great detail but Commando Training is grueling. I'm pretty sure I fractured a few bones already, I got stuck learning from an Armsmaster. He is unrelenting in his training regimen, and likes to train in full contact fighting. I'm earning battle scares and I haven't even been on one mission yet. Enough of my complaining. Happy Birthday Little Brother! That potion seems to be working, so stop being mopey. How are you and Snow doing? What about that little fox of yours, Mira, how is the little devil? I look forward to your response letter. Mira isn't a devil, and why were they so interested in Snow and Me? We're just Friends. Let's see if Orion asks the same question. I opened the last letter. Eight! Eight Pegasi remain out of the fifty that were here, and we haven't even gotten to the actual training yet! I was put in a four pony team, that means there are two teams competing for Delta squad. There is me, Skylance (who claims his father, is your NCO), and believe it or not I have a Thestral Pony on my team, her name is Jet, named after a black gem apparently, and lastly Cloudfire, she's cool you'd like her. My teammates are hilarious, Jet is so head-over-hooves interested in Skylance. The best part, Skylance is completely oblivious to it. Jet is constantly coming up with schemes to get him to notice her, and asking me and Cloudfire to help. We only help with the ones that actually have a chance to work. Other than that Captain Spitfire has been acing weird. She's been professional, but there is something a little awkward with the way she looks at me. If all that wasn't enough to suggest I'm having a blast, THIS IS GREAT! There I said it. Write me back ASAP Little Brother. I want to know every little detail, that Includes anything that happens between you and Snow! Your brother, Orion. P.S. Cheer up. At least he didn't say "Happy Birthday". I knew the potion was working because I could sense they were all having a grand time. I folded the letters back up and put them in a false book on my bookshelf. I started getting prepped for tonight. Mira was chewing on a snack I gave her. I had to admit that Mira had gown on me and was welcome company when Snow was gone. As I finished polishing my armor and laying it out for later, Sergeant Skyquake walked in. I came to attention. "At ease, You ready for tonight?" Skyquake asked me. "As i'll ever be, Sergeant." I answered calmly. He looked around the room, "Where is Private Snow?" "Out to lunch. She'll be back shortly." "Good because I want to take you and her to Ponyville early so we can have a look around before you take over for the Graveyard shift." "Very good Sergeant. May I ask you a question Sergeant?" "Shoot." He said waiting patiently. "My mother lives in Ponyville, and is determined to see me. I'm afraid if I don't go see her she'll take a train here to Canterlot, and find me on duty just to see me. I was hoping to go see her before my shift started." "Your file says your mother a guard right?" "Guard and Equestrian Army. She fought in a few skirmishes out west. She injured her wing in one of those fights." "Ah, I see. I'll let you go see her on one condition: you introduce me to your Mother-Hero." "Why would you want to meet my mother Sergeant?" I asked suspicious. "I have my reasons. Do accept my terms?" "You have a deal Sergeant." "Good. Now once Snow comes back, come get me, and we'll get underway." He left the room. As instructed I waited. Once snow got back it was a lot of excitement and questions as she scrambled to get ready. I neglected mentioning the part about visiting my mother though. Once Snow and I had our armors on, I gave Mira a Mock Bone to chew on while we're gone. After meeting up with Sergeant Skyquake, he gave us a long and repetitive lecture on making Celestia's Personal Guard look dignified in the eyes of the public. He also made it quite clear that he wanted to bring more guards along with us, but in doing so would have caused concern with Ponyville's locals. Skyquake was an efficient NCO. He may not be the Master Sergeant but he definitely knows what he's doing. I felt it unnecessary for me to ride on the train to Ponyville. Being a Pegasus I could have made it there in just under thirty minutes, taking the train increased travel time to an hour and a half. Sergeant Skyquake only brought one squad that consisted of twelve guard ponies in total. Two of our Pegasi were still with Celestia in Canterlot, PV2 Silver and SPC Rapid. Snow and I are to be the ones replacing them after the raising of the sun. The other ponies in the squad are, CPL Tin, PFC Scar, PFC Tinker, SPC Blast, SPC Azure, PV2 Meteor, and PV2 Stone. Snow and I were both Private First Class rank, however to most Sergeants that just means your an experienced Maggot. Skyquake treated us all like his students, sometimes he was strict, other times it was funny. "Listen up everyone!" Skyquake was standing at the front of our car. Ponyville Station was in sight so this would be the typical time for him to give a pep talk, "Alright we all know the drill. Subtly make sure the the town is clear, blend in until the ceremony, then it's show time. Corporal Tin, I want you to take charge of checking in with Celestia's Student and her Dragon. make sure she's alright and that the Overseer's List is complete. After that Go to the town hall and start our preparations. Strider and I have a quick errand to run. Understood?" Sergeant explained. "Understood Sergeant." The train came to a halt. Before the train could come to a complete stop everypony was already hopping off the train and off to do what the Sergeant said. "You lead Private." Skyquake said as he slowed to let me lead. The walk to my mother's was short but felt a bit long since I didn't necessarily want to be here. Thankfully Sergeant Skyquake didn't ask me any questions while we walked. We were nearing the house. My mother was gonna make a big deal out of my birthday and I didn't want that. We got to the door and I hesitated. "Is something the matter, Strider?" "Just not excited." I answered him as I knocked. We waited a short minute before somepony opened the door. "Little Brother!" Orion shouted as he greeted me. As happy as I was to see him I couldn't resist a little sarcasm, "I thought I was rid of you?" I asked as I gave him a hug. "Love you too Strider. What brings you by? I thought this would be the last place you'd be today." He asked genuinely confused and curious. "I'm with Celestia's Guard, and mom threatened she'd do something dramatic just to see me." I told him. Orion then looked past me, "Is this your NCO?" "Pardon me, where are my manners. Sergeant Skyquake, this is my brother Orion. Orion, this is Sergeant Skyquake." Orion offered a kind bow, "A pleasure." Skyquake did the same, "The same." "You know, Skylance is here along with the rest of my team." Orion Informed us. "My son is here?" Skyquake asked almost excitedly. "He is indeed. Come in, so you can say 'hi'." Orion moved inside so we could enter. I let Skyquake go first, and as we entered the living room Orion started his quick joke, "Hey Skylance, look who I found on the doorstep." Skylance looked almost like an exact clone of Skyquake. They both have a dark blue coat, and storm cloud grey mane & tail. Skyquake had a yellow streak in his mane & tail where Skylance didn't. Skylance's Final wingfeather on both sides was white, were Skyquake's were the same color as the rest of his feathers & coat. When Skylance looked at his father he lit up, "Dad? What are you doing here I thought you'd be back in Canterlot." He and Skylance gave each other a hug. "I thought you'd be in Cloudsdale. Besides I think I might know Private Strider's mother. Old battle buddy." "Watch who you call old Skyquake, or I'll kick your flank in the sparring ring like I used to." My mother Storm Fang Called from the Kitchen. He seemed a little surprised, "Storm Fang, you tough gal. I didn't expect to find you here. Hail, Rain, or Typhoon maybe, but certainly not you." Skyquake said as he went to greet my mother, "How'v you been? I haven't seen you since our first assignment." "I've been good. I had about six different assignments after that. The last one was the Western Garrison. What about you?" My mother exchanged. "Still in the guard as you see. Sergeant of Celestia's Alpha squad now. I'm Flame Strider's NCO." "Really?" My mother walked past him and went straight up to me, "We'll you know Skyquake, it would mean a lot to me if you could watch over my son here for me. Since I cant do that myself. Would you do me that one favor." "Are you kidding? Now that I know he's your son, I'm gonna make sure he makes it to a Command position in the Guard." "This Isn't gonna end well for me is it?" I asked. "Nope." My mother chirped. Everypony chuckled at my expense. "Well as much as I'd like to stay and chat, I have a squad to look after. Good to see you again Storm Fang, perhaps we should exchange letters?" "We shall." My mother nodded in agreement. "Son, good luck." Skyquake gave Skylance a quick hug before starting for the door. Once at the hall to the door, he stopped to look at me, "I want you at the celebration an hour early. Understood?" "Understood Sergeant." I said as he exited. Once we heard the door close my mother spoke up, "Orion where are your manners? Introduce your teammates to you're brother, this instant." "Yes Mom." Orion positioned himself in the room to properly point to everypony else, "Team this is my little brother Flame Strider." he started, "Strider, this is Skylance, Jet,..." Jet was almost midnight black, her wings were leathery like a bat which is normal for a Thestral, the white star-like spots on her wings weren't. Her eyes cat-like were intimidatingly bright gold. Her mane & tail were a dark navy blue. "...and Cloudfire." Orion finished pointing to the pony on the couch. Cloudfire's name did her little justice. She was colored similarly to me with one addition. White, Red, Orange AND yellow, but her colors beautifully danced across her coat and feathers like a walking-painting of a cloud on fire. Her mane & tail were the same way with each color blending with the other. Orion had to bump me to get me to stop staring. "N-Nice to meet all of you." I said quickly. "Why don't you all sit down and talk, I'll be done with supper shortly." "Can I help?" Jet asked hurrying into the. I was about to go sit down when I got a sense of pride coming from Orion, I looked at him to see he was smiling widely and deviously. "What?" I asked as I got closer. Orion whispered into my ear, "Would you like some help asking Cloudfire out?" I retracted my ear to protest, but he just kept the All-Knowing-Brother smile on his face, "Fine, yes." "Don't worry brother I got this." Orion said confidently. "That's what I'm afraid of." I mumbled. Tall Tale IVVI I hadn't had one of my mother's home cooked meals in a long time. Spending the afternoon with my mother and brother lifted my spirits. Orion's team was also interesting, Cloudfire in particular. To be honest I was a little terrified of what my brother might be planning when it comes to Cloudfire, Orion had said nothing during dinner to indicate his plans. Anyway I was In the town hall now. I was waiting for the ceremony to start. Celestia had arrived from one of the upper balconies to avoid being seen until the ceremony. I was guarding the inside of the main entrance watching everypony come in. This town was rowdy, everypony had a lot of energy to burn. Especially a loud smiling pink pony that was bouncing around the hall. The Pegasi made room for the Earth and Unicorn ponies on the ground by hovering above among the the banners and decorations that decorated the hall. I wasn't excited about the ponies having a straight shot at the Princess. Specialist Blast was standing guard on the opposite side of the door from me. Sergeant Skyquake, was toward the front of the room to be closer to the Princess. We were the only guards on this side of the show. The room was filling up now. On one of the balconies above, a nervous looking yellow and pink haired Pegasus mare was bringing in some birds on a T-stand. On the balcony that Celestia was to be on a White and Purple maned unicorn mare stood there waiting to reveal the Princess. Taking the hint that things were about to get started Blast and I closed the doors in a halfway manner, so if there were any latecomers they could still get in. Everything quieted down, and the fanfare from the birds started. Everypony quieted down, and a stage light focused on the Mayor of Ponyville. "Fillies and Gentlecolts." The Mayor started, "As Mayor of Ponyville, it is my great pleasure to announce the beginning of the Summer Sun Celebration!" There was polite and excited cheering from the crowd. Once it quieted down, the Mayor resumed. "In just a few moments, our town will witness the magic of the sunrise, and celebrate this, The Longest Day of The Year! And now, It is my great honor to introduce to you the ruler of our land, the very pony who gives us the sun and the moon each and every day, the good, the wise, the bringer of harmony to all of Equestria... Princess Celestia." She gestured a hoof above her. The fanfare sounded and the white Unicorn pulled back the curtains to reveal Celestia, only that she wasn't there. The crowd reacted with gasps and murmurs. I stole a glance over to Sergeant Skyquake who was confused. The white unicorn went back to look for Celestia while we waited. "Remain calm everypony. There must be a reasonable explanation." The mayor said trying to reassure everypony. That loud pink pony piped up, "Ooh, ooh, I love guessing games! Is she hiding?" As if on cue with the pink pony's question, the white unicorn mare came back out. "She's Gone." The crowd gave a collective gasp. It was weird. Then I could hear the pink pony again, "Ooh, She's good." Then a singular quick scream came from the same direction. I scanned the room to see what was worthy of screaming at. It didn't take me long to find the mist of purple and blue smoke appearing where Celestia was supposed to be. The miasma swirled and churned with, stars? No stars were in the sky, not in smoke. Then the smoke parted in a fit, and revealed the solid form of a pony. Not just any pony either, an Alicorn regal but dark. An opposite to our beloved and missing Princess Celestia. Then she began to speak. "Oh, my beloved subjects." She started, "It's been so long since I've seen your precious, little sun loving faces." She said in a bitter tone. "What did you do with our Princess?" A blue and rainbow maned Pegasus asked just before trying to fly toward the pretender. She was stopped from doing anything rash by a Orange earth pony, that held the Pegasus' tail. The Dark Alicorn chuckled, "Why? Am I not royal enough for you? Don't you know who I am?" she asked. Once again the pink pony opened her mouth, "Ooh, ooh, more guessing games! Um, Hokey Smokes! How about... Queen Meanie! No! Black Snooty, Black Snooty!" She was then silenced by the orange earth pony via cupcake gag. I had to stifle a laugh at the name "Black Snooty". Black Snooty then moved in close to the nervous yellow Pegasus with the birds, "Does my crown no longer count now that I have been imprisoned for a thousand years? Did you not recall the legend? Did you not see the signs?" Another voice chimed in, this time from Celestia's student. "I did, and I know who you are. You're The Mare In The Moon. Nightmare Moon." "Well, well, well. Somepony who remembers me. Then you also know why I'm here." Nightmare said mildly pleased. "You're here to...to..." She must have lost her nerves because she didn't finish. Nightmare laughed, "Remember this day, little ponies. For it was your last. From this moment forth, the night will last FOREVER!" I'm assuming to emphasize her point, she started to laugh evilly, her smoke-like hair swirled upward and she conjured up lighting indoors. "Seize Her!" The Mayor commanded. Blast and I rushed to the Sergeant's side as we flew toward the villain. "Only she knows where the Princess is." "Stand back you foals!" She demanded as her eyes glowed. Lightning came down from the ceiling and knocked the three of us down to the ground. Nightmare Moon turned herself into a miasma and disappeared out the door before we could get back up to challenge her a second time. Not that I wanted to. Lightning hurt, a lot. As we steadied ourselves, Skyquake decided to comment. "Well, that happened." Before Blast could respond, Celestia's Student cut in. "Somepony needs to go inform my brother Shining Armor." She said before running off. Getting back on track, "She's right. Strider, fly back to Canterlot and inform Captain Armor of what has transpired here. We will stay behind and see of we can help the civilians and figure anything out about the Princess' whereabouts." "Yes Sergeant." I said as I gave him a quick nod and ran out and leaped into the night sky. It was supposed to be morning, this just seemed wrong. ☼ I was flying over Canterlot now headed toward the Palace Guard. Below I could see the confused ponies that were still waiting on the sun to rise. Even the city guard looked lost at the absence of the sun. Flying to the Palace Guard building I could see Captain Armor returning to the Palace. I hurried and landed behind him. "Captain!" I shouted getting his attention. "I have news." "I assume it has to due with the sun not coming up when planned." "Yes, sir. Princess Celestia was taken by another Alicorn. She is the Mare in the Moon, Nightmare Moon. That is what your sister said." I told him. ""Anything else?" Captain Armor asked. "Nightmare Moon said that she was going to ensure Equestria remained in an eternal night." "Alright you go to the Commander of the City guard and tell him: Mike-Lima, Four-Papa-Alfa. You got that?" "Yes Sir!" "Once your done with that, help the city guard where you can, until your Squad returns, or I send for you. Now go." Shining Armor went into the Palace Guard building. I went to do as ordered. Finding and Informing the Commander of the City guard was easy enough, he was outside the Precinct talking with his guards. After repeating the phrase the Captain gave me, he got to work keeping everypony calm and moving about their business. The current excuse was that Celestia had gotten sick and was unable to raise the sun for the moment (I thought that excuse was a little funny). It seemed that the guard was being under utilized to find Celestia and bring her back to stop Nightmare Moon. I continued to watch from atop a roof to see how the city guard handled the situation. The City Commander didn't need my help, he had things well in hoof. Out of the corner of my eye I saw movement. It was a rolling trashcan, and I heard small hooves running down a alleyway below me. I glided down to investigate. It was a dead-end alleyway. Stacked trashcans, garbage, and dumpsters were lining the sides. I was studying the environment looking for something that looked out of the ordinary. I found the out-of-ordinary thing I was looking for. A tri-colored tail and hushed whispers coming from behind a stack of weathered boxes. It had to be a filly or colt. "Hello? Little pony?" I asked in my attempt at a calm voice, all I did was succeed at scaring them further. I removed my helmet setting it on the ground and tried again. "Hello? My name is Flame Strider of Celestia's Personal Guard. It's safe I promise." That earned some hushed whispers. I waited patently, for quite some time. When I was about to give up and leave, a face slowly poked it's head out of the box in front of the pony's tail. Definitely a filly. "Hi. Why are you here alone in this ally?" I asked. "I'm not alone." She said quietly, but loud enough for me to hear. Another filly poked her head out from the top of the stack of boxes. Two? "Okay what are you both doing here?" "Hiding." The second told me. "Well stop hiding. Come out here so I can know who I'm talking to. I promise whatever your hiding from will not harm you while I'm around." They seemed to think about it for a second. The first filly stepped out, and the second hopped down from her perch. Now that I could see them I knew exactly what they were. Thestral Pegasi (Bat Ponies). "What are your names?" I asked. "I'm Moon Shadow." Her coat was Grey. Her mane and tail colors, pastel midnight blue, streaks of violet and pale purple going through it. Her mane was styled, in the back a short wolf's tail with short braids coming from it. In the front her mane fell to one side showing of a coat pattern of a silvery Crescent moon that highlighted her right eye. She had a few freckles on her nose the same color of the moon. "I'm Nightlight." Her coat was a dusty aqua blue. Her mane and tail colors, looked like a darker shade blue, with sky blue and pale yellow streaks. Her mane was styled in a simple upper-ponytail in a way that showed off her face and eyes. She also had face marks, two golden stars beneath her left eye. Similar freckles on her nose as Moon Shadow, only gold like her stars. I studied them. Other than their racial features, Fluffy ears and chest, bat-like wings, and glow-gold eyes. They looked like siblings. "Are you two friends or family?" They looked hesitant to answer, "We're twins." Nightlight told me. "Interesting. Can you tell me what your hiding from?" They looked to the ground, "The Guards." They spoke in unison. "Like me?" I asked. They just nodded in response. Now I was seriously curious, "Why?" "We ran." Moon said. "Ran from where?" They stayed silent, "Can you tell me how long ago you ran away from wherever you came from?" "A week." Moon said. Okay it was time to decide what to do with them. If they'd been missing for a week surely somepony was looking for them, but I don't remember seeing anything regarding missing fillies. I had to get them to trust me a bit more so I could figure out how to get them home. *Grumble* Moon Shadow looked at her sister and giggled at her rumbling stomach. Nightlight blushed and glared at her sister. I gave a humorous laugh, "How about I get you two some breakfast? It should be about that time." I put on my helmet and stood, "Follow me little ones." It didn't take me long to find a place I had wanted to try out while passing it on an old patrol route. The Ursa Minor Cafe. They served anything from Hay Burgers to French Toasted Waffles and more. The Twins sat across from me. When the waitress gave me a questioning look at the three of us I just told her "...their my cousin's kids visiting for the week." She bought the lie and took our order. Moon Shadow and Nightlight both acted like they hadn't eaten since they ran they both asked for blueberry pancake stacks with more blueberries on top of them. I just had a waffle with apple-butter and orange juice. i watched them quietly as they ate their smiles getting wider with every bite. I felt a sense of happiness at their momentary joy. I was finished when they were about halfway through their stacks. I decided this was a good time to interrupt. "Girls?" I said getting there attention, "I realize that you don't trust me, with good reason. I'm a stranger to you still. But I wan't to help you, I really do. Is there anything you can tell me that can help me to help you?" Nightlight looked at Moon, "He seems trustworthy, he hasn't taken us to the city guard yet like the others did." "If we tell you why were here, will you allow us to stay?" Moon Shadow asked. I thought on the request. Where would they stay if I said yes? I had to keep them busy while I was on duty. I thought back on a few months ago. The metal pony who almost blew me and my brothers up. He lived here in Canterlot. I knew he lived in the warehouse district. He hardly knew me, but maybe he could do me a favor. "I can do my best." I said. "We need a promise." Nightlight said. I put my hoof over my heart and sat up straight, "I promise on my honor as a Royal Guard: I will do everything within the limitations of the law and my abilities that I will help you both as best I can." I sat normally, "Satisfied?" "Yeah. You looked funny while saying that." Nightlight was laughing. "Alright. We came to Canterlot to find out what happened to our parents five years ago. All we know is that they disappeared while investigating something for the Guard." Moon admited. "Were they in they in the guard or something similar?" I asked. "It was the Equestrian guard." "It's the Equestrian Army now." I told them, "I can't directly look into their affairs." They both looked disappointed. "But; I have two brothers who may be able to, and I'm friends with the Princess, so surely I can find something out. It may take some time though. Can you be patient?" Their faces lit up with hope, "So dose this mean were staying with you?" "No. I live in the palace in a small room with my partner. However I might have someone who can watch you when I'm absent. Finish your meal, I'm gonna go pay the bill, then we'll head to the warehouse district. After I paid the bill, we walked down to the Warehouses. Most were storage units for businesses further into the city. Some businesses worked out of these buildings. Few actually live here, like our Metal Pony. I was looking for Warehouse 14. "Why would somepony live down here? It's creepy here." Nightlight commented. "I'm sure its safe here." I wasn't sure. I continued to look for the number 14 on one of the warehouses, soon enough I spotted it. There was a small observatory on top of it. We walked to the warehouse door, and I knocked. "Try to be polite. He's different than the rest of us ponyfolk." I told the girls. They looked at me confused. I heard falling metal and clanging tools getting closer to the other side of the door. When it opened the metal pony was looking at me through copper colored goggles. "I did my community service." He blurted. "I'm not here about that. Your not in trouble. May we come in?" I lifted a wing to show the fillies behind me. "Well since I'm not in trouble. Please come in. Mind what you touch, some items I have here can do bodily harm. Follow me to my living area, It's much safer." He trotted through the piles of metal contraptions. We followed closely avoiding touching anything. We came to what had to be the living area. There was a bed in one corner, a cooking station along a wall and some furniture in the center of the room. "Well before I get to why i'm here perhaps it's time to introduce myself. My name is Private First Class Flame Strider, these are my Cousin's kids Moon Shadow, and Nightlight." The 'Cousin' lie was working so far, no need to change it now. "A pleasure to meet you all. My name is Gadget I'm an inventor as you can see. My latest project is coming up with a way to provide personal flight to ponies without wings." "Don't we have airships for that?" I asked kinda confused. "We do but; with those your just standing on a floating platform, not really flying." Gadget pointed out. "So anyway, what brings you by my workshop?" "I've been hit with a dilemma. Moon, and Nightlight, their Staying in Canterlot for a short while while their parents are on a little vacation. But since I don't have room at my room in the Barracks I was hopping you could let them stay in a spare room or something. Their my responsibility but I don't exactly have anywhere else to put them for the time being." I explained. Gadget seemed to think for a minute. Reading is facial expressions were somewhat difficult with his face being made of metal and all. "Well I suppose I do still owe you for almost blowing you up. I could also definitely use some help around here getting it organized." Something fell out on the warehouse floor as if to prove is point. I turned to look at the twins who had found a spot on the couch, "Are you two willing to help Gadget here in his home, until I can find better accommodations?" I asked them. "Will he teach us stuff?" Nightlight asked. "I certainly can little one. The best way to learn something is to teach it." Said cheerfully. "So I guess It's settled?" I asked. "Yes, they may stay here." Gadget looked to the ceiling, "Oh good it looks like the sun is finally up. I can't imagine what took so long." The sun was up!? I looked to the window Gadget was looking at and sure enough there was sunlight, "That's my queue to get moving. I'll come by later to see how thing are going." I shook Gadget's hoof and thanked him, as I left the twins waved "Bye Strider!". As I exited the warehouse I heard Gadget, "Have either of you played a game called Oubliettes & Ogres?" Tall Tale VVII It was three weeks later. Two! Two Princesses we had to guard now! Don't get me wrong It's awesome. Celestia got her sister back after a thousand years, and that we now have two rulers, but the Palace Guard was now in the middle of expansion. Security is being doubled, that means an additional thirty eight Guards are to be assigned to Princess Luna alone. Command has also seen fit to rename both units. Instead of Celestia's Personal Guard, and Luna's Personal Guard, they have been changed to Celestia's Sentinels and Luna's Dragoons. With a total of Seventy Six Guards guarding the princesses, the standard Palace Guard has been moved into the City to increase security among the Citizens. In addition to us having to guard Princess Luna. Luna is nothing like her sister in terms of how she rules and what her nightly activities entail. It was becoming obvious that her Dragoons were becoming her task force as she got more comfortable with them. Luna had a table in her Office (More like Command Center) that her and Star swirl the Bearded made to help Luna keep the peace at night. At first everypony thought that had meant she could see who was having bad dreams or if there was a major problem in Equestria that required her attention. Instead she frequently left the palace without telling anypony and without anypony seeing her. Celestia had laughed at the Guard's reaction. But after that first night Luna had not only told her unit's Lieutenant Ironside where she was going, she started sending her guards to some of the locations where she was keeping the peace. Today Snow was being transferred to Luna's Dragoons along with Tin. Tin was now gonna be Sergeant of the final Squad of Luna's unit with Snow as his Corporal. I was standing guard in Celestia's office. Princess Celestia and Princess Luna were conversing about the Grand Galloping Gala and weather or not they should start preparations. "It's over half a year off" was Luna's argument, "Better safe than sorry" was Celestia's. Eventually they settled on just making the guest list for the time being. There was a knock on the door, "Come in." Celestia said, her and Luna looking up to the door to see Sergeant Skyquake there. "Pardon my interruption Princesses, but may I borrow Private Strider for a while? I have some things that I need him to do." Skyquake said to them. "By all means, he's your Guard." "That may be, but we follow your order's just as much as we follow Command's." Skyquake said leading me out. We were walking toward the palace exit. "Alright Strider, I'm gonna need your help now that Tin is being made Sergeant of L.D. Charlie Squad. That means more responsibility on your shoulders." "What are my orders Sergeant?" "In a minute, first things first. You've been promoted to Corporal, you are going to be my second within the Squad." "Thank you Sergeant." I said as we stopped just outside the Palace. "You won't be thanking me after a week. Here's your pin." Skyquake fumbled with a pocket under his armor and pulled out a Corporal Rank pin. He started to put it on me, "First thing I want you to do is go get our new transfers from the train station, they'll be here in an hour. They know to look for you so they'll find you. Bring them back here and make sure they get settled. After that come find me, I'll have more stuff for you to do by then. It will probably be getting late by then to, so I might just have a duty list for you tomorrow." He finished with the pin. "Now hop to it Corporal." "Yes Sergeant." I started into the City, But I had my own agenda that needed completion for the day. ☼ With it being three weeks after I found Nightlight and Moon Shadow and still nopony has come looking for them, it was time for me to start finding out more. As far as the Twins know I've been looking into their request. That was only partially true, I was searching for a private investigator to look into these matters, and I'd found one in the Canterlot newspaper. A Unicorn pony named Luminix recently made her Practice known here in Canterlot, I was on my way to see her real quick. I was on a time crunch cause I still had to go pick up the new transfers. The Newspaper ad I found had Luminix's home address on it. It didn't take me long to find it. As I was still in a hurry I knocked on the door. She answered the door after a few seconds. Luminix was a white unicorn with a light blue mane that had the slightest shine to it. "Can I help you?" She asked. "Yes I heard you are a Private Investigator. Is that correct?" "What would one of Celestia's Sentinels need with a Private Eye?" She asked rather bluntly. "I want to keep something private. Now can you help me or not?" I asked. "Of course. What do you want me to do?" "Two names. I need you to find out where their from and if they have any family there. Moon Shadow and Nightlight, their fillies." I handed her a slip of paper with their names on it. "This is a fairly simple task. I can probably have the information ready by tomorrow." "Alright good, now how much is this gonna cost me?" I asked quickly. "Seventy five Gold Bits. This won't take me long, you can pay me when I give you the information. I'll find you when I have it." "Thank you." I didn't say anything else I just flapped my wings lifting myself into the sky and headed toward the Train Station. ☼ I was now waiting at the train station. I wasn't excited about going behind the girls back like that. But I felt it necessary to keep my promise to them. The train was late, but I could hear it coming up the mountain side. Another train was in the process of unloading it's passengers behind me. I was so focused on the train I was waiting for I didn't notice the excited emotion I was feeling. "Well little brother, I know I didn't send you a letter telling you the good news yet so I can't help but wonder why your here." Somepony said from behind me. I looked to see Orion and his team standing there in Wonderbolt Dress Blues, "Orion! What are you doing here, and what good news?" "What you can't tell? Your looking at the new Wonderbolt's Delta Squadron." "Orion, that's great, congratulations! Do Atlas and Thasus know?" I asked him. "I sent them letters. I was thinking tomorrow night we could all go out to celebrate, Corporal." "Wha~ Oh yeah right." I almost completely forgot about my promotion and that I was wearing the pin, "So why are the four of you in Canterlot?" "Captain Spitfire and the rest of Alpha Squadron have started their first tour of the season. We've been sent to Canterlot to do a few shows and races while their away. Also were gonna be stationed here like all Wonderbolts when not on tour." Skylance explained. "Besides, I can think of one reason why I'D want to be in Canterlot." Jet said with dreamy eyes toward Skylance. Orion and I rolled our eyes at Jet's comment. Cloudfire then spoke directly to me, "So why are you here Corporal?" "I'm waiting for two new transfer guards into Celestia's Sentinels. The train is late." I answered her. "Well as much as we would like to wait with you and catch up, we have to go get settled in. We'll talk later brother." Orion said waving to his team to follow. Cloudfire didn't move, "I'll catch up with you." She said to her team. She then turned to me and I suddenly felt afraid. "You know your brother speaks very highly of you?" Play it smooth, "Uh huh." I said nodding. Not Smooth. "Especially when i'm around." She added. "Uh huh." I repeated. Your intelligence is dwindling. She was circling me now like I was prey, "I can't help but come to the conclusion that he's trying to set me up with you, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't notice your conversation with Orion on the Eve of the Summer Sun Celebration." Say anything but 'Uh huh', "Yeah." Your an idiot. "I was hoping to do a little celebrating tonight, perhaps you could join me?" Was she asking me out? Of course she's asking you out Numb-Nuts. "That would be..." Wonderful! "..wonderful." "Good. Pick me up at Seven." She lifted herself into the sky, "Your train is here. See you tonight Cutie." She flew off. You're lucky she thinks were cute. "Shut up." I said to the new voice in my head. Okay back to the task at hoof. The sooner I got his done the sooner I could get to my newly scheduled date with Cloudfire. With the train finally pulling into the station I moved down the platform to the train car used by the Royal Guard, Equestrian Army & Guard, and the Equestrian Navy (Not including the Wonderbolts). There weren't many in the train car. The two that I was looking for were easy enough to spot, for starters they stood out pretty good the Sentinel Armor. "Corporal?" The mare asked. The Stallion stayed quiet. "Newly minted, but yes. What are your names?" "Well my name is Private Oda..." Oda was small for a mare. Not overly small to where she could be mistaken for a filly or anything, but small none-the-less. She was a dark brown with a steel colored mane. Her snout and horn tip were also steel colored. "...and this is Private Spartan Apple. He's from Appleoosa, and he rarely ever talks. Responding to a superior doesn't count as talking)." Saying Spartan was a big pony was an understatement. I know I'm big for a Pegasus (Average Adult Male Earth Pony sized), but Spartan was HUGE, he was easily several inches taller than Princess Luna. He looked built like a mountain. His coat was a dark red, and his mane was short and a dark green. I feel sorry for the armorsmith that had to make his armor. "Have you two been briefed on what you'll be doing?" I waved for them to follow. "I know we'll be in the Palace Guard. That is all we were told, the Equestrian Guard isn't big on telling their troops everything." Oda responded. I laughed a bit, "That sounds like Command. Well the Palace guard was ousted from the Palace." Oda let out a slight gasp, "So where are we going? The City Guard?" "No. You're going into Celestia's Sentinels, Alpha Squad. Sergeant Skyquake is our NCO, the NCO above him is First Sergeant Forge, then it's Lieutenant Arrow, and at the top of the Canterlot Command is Captain Shining Armor." I explained. Oda was smiling with excitement now, "We're gonna be Guarding Celestia! Oh my gosh! I can hardly believe it." Spartan just kept his eyes forward. "So Spartan." I said getting his attention, "Did you volunteer for this or were you voluntold?" "Dragged Along." He answered. "What?" "I put is name on the volunteer list. He's still a little bitter about it." Oda admitted. "Ah I see. Well he needs to get over it quickly, you two are partners. That means Living together and almost never being alone." I told them. Spartan let out a annoyed groan, Oda was practically beaming with excitement. These two were funny. Now to get them settled. ☼ I was on my way to the Sergeant offices. The lower ranking NCOs had cubicles in one large room that they all worked out of when it came to paperwork. I knocked on the door. "Come in!" Sounded like Sergeant Astra. I opened the door and stood there, "Ah, our new Corporal. How are you liking the promotion so far?" "Uneventful so far Sergeant. Is Sergeant Skyquake here?" "Last desk on the left side." She said pointing. "Thank you Sergeant." I continued over to Skyquake's desk. At first he didn't say anything, He just motioned for me to sit in a chair while he finished writing something down. The serious look on his face told me this was an important matter. He spit the quill out of his mouth and looked at me. "Alright Corporal. Do you know what a Sergeant's job is when it comes to somepony of your rank?" "No Sergeant." "A Sergeant is supposed to train a Corporal to take his place one day or just to simply be a Sergeant. Command about to do some changes in the next few months. New Lieutenant, First Sergeant Forge is leaving. Some of the sergeants here may be moved up in rank. We are all making sure our Corporals are ready to do so as well. That is why I'm splitting Alpha into two teams. I'm gonna have Alpha One, you are gonna lead Alpha Two." "This is what you meant by 'won't be thanking me after a week' huh, Sergeant?" I asked. "That is exactly it. At the end of every day I want a simple report on my desk, even if it's just a note that says 'Nothing happened, All is well' I want it on my desk. Understood?" "Understood Sergeant." I answered. "Were starting this new arrangement in the morning, here is your half of tomorrow's duties and your half of the roster. But I think you're gonna have a late start tomorrow." He said a little unsure. "Sergeant?" Okay now I'm confused. "For starters, my son Skylance told me that his teammate Cloudfire asked you out for tonight while you were at the Train station." I felt a bit warm, I cleared my throat. "Was there another reason Sergeant?" "Yes it seems Princess Luna has requested to borrow you for a little while. Something about not having enough of her Dragoons for the night." He explained, "I've asked Sergeant Tin let me know if she keeps you longer than a few hours. Now she's expecting you in her Office slash Command Center. Don't keep her waiting. Dismissed Corporal." "Yes Sergeant." I got up and left the room. With my orders under my wing I made my way over to where Princess Luna commands her little task force. They were working closely with each city in Equestria in addition to Luna's magical table map. As an example; A city like Las Pegasus would send Luna a package containing a file of a case of some sort that they need help on. Luna reviews the file and dispatches her Dragoons adoringly to deal with the situation. That part of her operation was slow going at first, but is quickly gaining traction and popularity among law enforcement ponies. Upon reaching Luna's office I noticed no guards at the door. I proceeded to knock on the door. "YOU MAY ENTER!" The doors shook. Knowing it was Luna who said that I let myself in. "You asked for me Princess." I said bowing my head as I entered the room. "Ah! Corporal Flame Strider. Rise, thou are just in time. We are in need of your assistance this night. We are headed to the frozen north to defuse a problem with some Pony Miners and some Yeti. But there is another issue that requires attention, that is why thou are here." Luna Started. I noticed she was getting ready for travel, makes sense the Frozen North is a great distance away. Even by wing. "What is my mission?" I asked. "We want thou to travel to the southern-most point of the Everfree Forest. There is a cliff that separates the forest from the desert. On the face of that cliff is a cave. We have reason to believe the inhabitants of that cave are lost. We want thou to help them find their way." She instructed, "We wish that we had more for thou but that is the extent of our knowledge on this subject, and We must be off. We are behind schedule." Luna then exited her office with three of her guards in toe. "I will not disappoint Princess." "Good luck Corporal. We owe thou a favor!" Princess Luna said before leaving the corridor. I let my head drop in disappointment once she was around the corner. I mean this is just great! The other side of the Everfree Forest, that's more than half the distance to Appleloosa. Come on you had to know you first date with a pretty mare wasn't gonna go as planned. Shut up voice, you aren't helping. I'm helping a little. Well maybe Cloudfire will give us a second chance. You're hoping for a LOT there. We can dream right? No, no we can't. Why did my brain suddenly come up with you? I've always been here. That Potion did more than just connect us to our brothers you know. It gave me an annoying conscience? If annoying you is how i'm gonna get you to listen to yourself than that is what I'm gonna do. Great this should be fun. Are you gonna be quiet when i'm trying to think at least? I only intervene when I feel necessary, think of me like a second brain. I don't want to. ☼ I was now walking through the Wonderbolt's apartments. Before I came here I told Sergeant Skyquake exactly what I was doing for Luna and he cleared me for tomorrow and the morning after. He said I was probably not gonna be back until then. I also told Gadget I was gonna be gone for at most that long. The girls think i'm going shopping in Manehatten. Now I was gonna tell Cloudfire we need to reschedul our date. Finding her door wasn't hard, it has her name on it. Taking a deep beath I knocked. I could hear her moving around in the apartment. She opened the door and saw that I was still in my armor, "Let me guess. You have to cancel because somepony asked you to work late?" She was half right. "Princess Luna is dispatching me on a mission." I said bluntly. "Okay not the worst excuse I've heard. Did she only send you?" She asked. "Yes. Why?" I asked back. "I thought the guard was as strict as the Wonderbolts when it came to Partners and Wingponies. Wait right there. I'll be but a minute." She closed the door. As much as I wanted to continue on my way I felt compelled to stay and wait. She was a little over a minute but she came back out in her Wonderbolts Jumpsuit. "I'm coming with you, and that's final. But I still expect a real first date after this." This is not going how either of us expected. "Breakfast in Appleloosa then?" I sugested. "It's a start." Cloudfire said locking her door. She them moved across the hall to my brother's room and knocked. Orion almost immediately answered the door, "How long are you gonna be gone?" Is the first thing he asked. "A full day. Returning on the dawn of the second." I said. "Good we have practice that afternoon." He looked at Cloudfire, "Bring him back in one piece." Then he looked at me, "Bring her back in one piece. Get it?" "Got it." Me and Cloudfire answered. "Good." He said satisfied. "Hey Orion before we go I want to ask you something." I leaned close s I could wisper in his ear, "Did the potion make you start hearing an annoying but helpful voice in you head?" He pulled his head back, "Oh good, I thought it was just me. You got that to?" "Yup. We need to have a serous talk with Thasus about this." "Agreed. Now don't you have something to do?" He reminded me. "Right. See you later." "Bye." We got outside and flew away from Canterlot. I felt bad that I got Cloudfire roped into this mission. I know she volunteered for it but she didn't have to come with me if I hadn't told her I was alone. Cloudfire flew past me and around a cloud, "I love being in the sky!" "Your a Pegasus." I said flatly. "It's more than that, and more than just me being a Wonderbolt. It's just being free, no limitations up here." "Yeah I get that." "Race you to the Everfree Forest?" She suggested. She looked ready and geared for a race. Knowing I would probably lose, "You're on!" Tall Tale VISomething has gone wrong. II was in the Canterlot City Guard Precinct doing some paperwork, really I was just writing letters to cousins, but I made it look like paperwork.
"Snow is gonna be ecstatic, to hear about this."
Tall Tale IIIV To say that Snow was ecstatic was an understatement.
As I exited the warehouse I heard Gadget, "Have either of you played a game called Oubliettes & Ogres?"
Tall Tale VVII It was three weeks later. Knowing I would probably lose, "You're on!"
