Day of Flight

Among the Clouds

She awoke from her nap,
Dusting the sleep out of her eyes.
Then, she could have sworn she saw him.
Turning quickly, she tried to find where he had gone,
Dashing from the cloud she rested on,
She took flight from her nest.
Galloping on the invisible road before her,
She was determined to find her love,
For he had not been seen, except in her dreams.

But today was her day.

A bullet piercing through the sky,
Blue fire searing the clouds.
She powered through, into the blue yonder,
Separating sound and space, so full of wonder.
The clouds cheered her on in their silent calls,
As her rainbow traced her steps in the sky.
Peering over the land beneath her, she cradled the air beneath her wings.

The land saw her,
And acknowledged her as she made her presence known.
The orchards winked at her with their fruits of green and red,
As the brown branches swayed from her passing,
While the grass was content to wave,
The leaves tickled the air when they kicked up.

The birds greeted her, flying by her side.
They smiled after saying hello, for they had challenged her to a race.
The chirping swallows and doting pigeons were quick to fall by the wayside,
But the mighty falcon was proving quite the match.
Her eyes squinted, and her tongue stuck out on the perch of her lips,
As her mighty wings conquered the challenge, and stopped the show.

As her journey continued, it was time for a quick rest,
The events of the day proving quite exhausting.
She stopped,hovered mid-flight;
She saw a cloud and claimed it for herself.
Touching down, she felt the warm fluff greet her tired form
The condensation was cooling for her body’s grief.
While the aching of her muscles signed off on her decision.

The Sun’s shine warmed her coat,
Covering it with its heavenly warmth as the wind caressed her back.
She stopped for a second, as she thought she heard her love.
She was enthralled by his voice,
His invitation to keep going.
She let out a laugh from the heart, and pressed on.
Her teeth bared a grin as the dialogues of the air whispered in her ear.
With the blue before her, and the green beneath,
She knew he had to be close.

Soon she saw her friends on her journey as well.
Colors of Yellow, Pink, Purple, White, and Orange smiled at her.
She even managed to see the tiny Purple-Green one laugh as he breathed his fire.
She felt bliss overtake her,
Seeing how Love had shown her the way.
But focused back on her task.

She crossed many different lands that day:
Canyons, deserts, tundras, plains;
She even came close to the shores of the Equestrian Sea,
Just to be with her love once more.

He was more of a tease than she remembered.
For every time he was near, she reached for him,
Only to come up with nothing but mist in her hold.
He would elude her capture,
But not without a wink and a smile.

She often thought about him,
When she was home with no one to hold.
She wanted to get out as much as she could,
Because that would give her one more chance to find him
Before he left her forever.

She criss-crossed the landscape of her home,
Flying with intent and determination to hold him in her grasp;
To tell him how much he means to her.

She remembers the days when they had seen see each other often
And they were inseparable.
But life would soon prove to be a hinder,
As their time together would fade and timber.

She would have a job,
Bills to pay as well.
She often looked to the skies to find him,
Only to find instead of heaven, just more of a hell.

When she thought about how he was to her, and how she gave herself to him,
It made her smile; for somewhere in those memories were times
Always worth the while.

She therefore flew with all of her power and might,
Soaring through the day, across the backdrop of the night’s black and blue sky.
Her tears confirmed what she had feared,
He was nowhere in sight.

So instead of sulking, she flew higher.
Higher and higher into the skies she went,
Droplets dotting her eyes,
Searching for any kind of remnants of her love.

Her rainbow tail seemed to lose its contour;
And its colors began to fade.
Her cocky grin faltered, and her pace slowed to a halter.
Reaching would never get to where he was, as her breath began to quicken.
So, she did what she knew she must do.

She folded her wings.

Rapid gusts slapped her hard in her face,
As pressure came back to greet her.
She felt the tears dry as they blew from her face,
Her eyes were glued shut, and her body was limp.

When suddenly, she heard his voice.
Not to be fooled, she brushed it off as an apparition.
This time, though, she felt his touch.
Springing her eyes open, she saw him such.

He smiled that wondrous smile
The one he had shown her all those times before,
Letting her know that he was just as real as she had hoped.
His grip tightened, and he mouthed those words she longed to hear from him to her.
He hugged her once more, and then was no more.

She stopped suddenly, feeling the ground beneath her.
She looked around, not too sure about what she was sure to know.
She saw her love once more, and even felt his embrace forevermore.
She knew that he was there, that he was still her protector,
That he was still cheering her on,
Just has he had before.

She looked up at the sky,
And blew a kiss up to heaven,
Hoping and knowing,
The clouds opening and showing,
That he would receive it.
