Prologue: One More Time
Memories dragged on through the weary soul of the old entity. The color in her eyes have faded, her mane no longer with signs of rejuvenation. Time finally had a place in her immortal heart. She'd once feared time, but now it was her last friend and the only to count on. All that was left of her to do was wait. These feelings of an end weighed heavily on her. No longer with the will fly, she stood at the edge of a window, looking outwards onto her legacy.
"Princess Celestia..." She spoke these words in a low hum with no one to hear her but herself. The sun was now setting over the horizon, and it would come time to raise the moon for there was no one else to do so... Only this time the moon was already out.
Her tired eyes shifted towards the daunting moon. It stood there, never moving or changing. From the break of dawn to the fall of dusk, it stood there, beckoning foul venomous words at her, the thing that haunted her dreams every second of every hour, and it sickened her to even lay eyes upon it.
The vile chains that surrounded the moon were the cause of her distress. The cause of her demise. It consumed her thoughts. It shrouded any emotion of joy that could enlist upon her. They stood as a reminder to what she still had left to lose, and of what she once lost... The sacrifice that took her happiness away, and she blamed herself endlessly even if she didn't have a choice.
A headache passed over her, she lowered her head and closed her eyes trying her best to suppress the pain. Her best to keep those thoughts at bay. The chains were the cause of all of this. They brought pain and destruction with them when they first appeared, and it was her job to keep Equestria safe and her people from them, but how could she?
How could she if she wasn't even able to protect the very soul she once loved the most...?
"Your Highness!" A Pegasus courier bolted through her bedroom door.
"Please... do not address me by that title again." She fixated her gaze at the moon, disturbed by the disruption of her thoughts.
"I'm truly sorry Princess, but I carry an important message. I've come to deliver it to you without delay. At your command."
"Go ahead, and please, skip all formality in the future."
"As is your wish Princess. The message I bare is from the Captain of the Royal Guards who is stationed out by the third chain in Altiem. The chain has been severed!"
Her eyes widened in disbelief. Taken a back, a spur of doubt formed faster in her mind than hope could. How could anyone have taken down the chain? Until now it only seemed like a dream. "Who are the ones responsible for this?"
"Their individual identities remain unknown to us, but it is a group of three that call themselves The Liberators."
A guardsman arrived at the end of the Courier's words. He looked bewildered. "Princess, you have an audience awaiting you today. They wish to speak to you as soon as possible."
"Who is it?"
"The Liberators." He said, skipping all formality.
The Princess stood for a while unmoving. A small part of her hoped that salvation was possible. Keeping composure, she slowly headed to the throne room. With every step, her heart began to beat ever more stronger with hope.
As she arrived, she was greeted by her guards who where standing almost like statues, weapons pointed at the supposed liberators. She looked over to them, ascertaining them. They stood in a triangular formation, to the right was an almost scrawny-looking stallion, standing in age in between the elderly stallion and a young-looking colt. His coat was a light shade of green and his mane a much darker hue. He wore glasses and heavy saddlebags with strange concoctions strapped around them, and she could guess that inside them were a large amount of herbs by the heavy smell that the wind wafted towards her. He was a scholar. She highly doubted that he could have severed the chains.
To left was an elderly violet stallion with a white beard and mane. He wore a shrouded mask and silk belts circled around him to conceal most of his body, something closely resembling ninja garbs. Could he have been the one who severed the chains? She held her doubts.
The one at the front and in the middle was the young light red-orange colt with a dark orange for a man. He stood in a valiant stance, his regal white armor bore strange symbols and an ornate sword hung from his side. He looked very young, almost too young to be the sole reason why the chains were destroyed, but something about the patterns in his armor and sword seemed... familiar. They all bowed as she turned to face them.
"Please, rise. Are you three the ones that call yourselves the Liberators?"
The young colt was the first to speak. "Yes, we are."
"I suppose you've heard of us." Spoke the scholar.
"News only just arrived, along with the Liberators themselves. I'll skip pleasantries. I've heard that the chain by the city of Altiem has been severed. Was this your doing?" She turned to look at the elderly stallion.
"You've heard right, but you've turned to the wrong person. I am only the servant to my lord. He is the one who managed to cut the chain." The elderly stallion turned to face the young colt who had not turned away his resolute gaze.
"I am the leader of The Liberators, Lord Sigmund."
Princess Celestia turned to face him. He stood proudly, a deep fire burning in his eyes. In that moment, Princess Celestia did something she had not done in many years. She let hope into her heart again. She bent a knee and bowed towards The Liberators.
"Lord Sigmund and company. I am honored to stand before you. Please, allow me to request one thing from you all. Be this world's salvation."
