Fred sat in the living room of his apartment one Friday, idly flipping through the channels. Today seemed like an ordinary day except for one major difference. Today just happened to be his birthday. The problem was that this time his birthday was so far very boring.
Fred first had to go to work that day, which didn't really bother him other than the fact that none of his coworkers acknowledged the fact that it was his birthday. They did acknowledge other things like how one coworker was getting married or how another's cat was sick. Surely he thought that if they were talking about important things like that they would recognize an important time in his life. Yet even when he would drop hints or outright say it was his birthday, no one seemed to care.
After work was no better than being in work. Fred already knew that he wouldn't be able to have his birthday with his parents since they were on the other side of the country. He tried contacting his friends, but all were busy with something else. And so with no parents and no friends, he resigned himself to being in his apartment.
"Well, here I am," Fred said, "a day I should be having a fun time but instead I'm here and alone on my birthday."
He then stopped changing the channels and gazed at what he saw on TV. There was an episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic on, specifically Party of One. Although he wasn't a fan of the show nor watched it frequently, he found himself mesmerized by the episode, specifically Pinkie Pie. He related to the pink party planning pony as she wanted to have a party with her friends but her friends were seemingly ignoring her. He watched as she became very depressed as she thought her friends didn't like her or her parties.
"Heh, I know how you feel about that," Fred caught himself saying to the character on the screen.
The episode did end on a happy note with a big party, something while making Fred happy it nonetheless showed how unlike the show his birthday didn't appear like it was going to be happy or even have a party.
"Pinkie," Fred said as the credits rolled, "If you were real, I'd want you to give me a birthday party."
Fred then shook his head, realizing how silly that sounded that a cartoon pony would somehow magically appear and throw a party for him. He then got up and went into the kitchen to get a snack. A few minutes later with a bowl of popcorn in hand, he returned to the living room.
"Hi," Pinkie Pie said as her pink head suddenly popped up from the couch, "I'm Pinkie Pie!"
Fred screamed and suddenly dropped his bowl. "That's a funny way to say hello," Pinkie said, "and you wasted all you popcorn now."
"Y...you're real."
"Of course I'm real silly! Are you real?"
Cautiously, Fred walked up to the earth pony and gave her a little poke in her stomach to see if he wasn't just dreaming this or hallucinating.
"Teehee," Pinkie squealed as she shook with laughter, "Hey, cut it out. I'm ticklish."
This was too much. Fred was about ready to pass due to the fact that pinkie was real and in his apartment. The pink pony then eyed the popcorn on the floor. "Are you gonna eat that?" Fred shook his head, and suddenly Pinkie jumped from the couch and began eating the popcorn off the floor. "Five minute rule," she said as she continued eating."
Finally with the floor cleared of popcorn Pinkie returned to the couch. "Fo, whffs fer fame," she said, her cheeks puffed like a squirrel due to all the popcorn.
"Huh," Fred said as he stared at the pony.
She then realized and swallowed the mound of popcorn in her mouth. "Heh, sorry. I was asking what your name was."
"Oh, my name's Fred."
"Hmmm..." Pinkie said as she put her hoof to her chin in thought, "Fred's not a really fun name. How about I call you... Freddy!"
Fred cringed at the pet name that he was given by Pinkie. It reminded him of when he was a kid and his mom called him Freddy. But he knew that there was going to be no reasoning with this pony. More importantly, he'd rather have someone there than being alone.
"So... um... Pinkie? Why exactly are you here?"
"I'm here to put on a super awesome birthday party for you, duh!"
Fred was stunned. Apparently Pinkie somehow knew that he it was his birthday. "How did you know?"
"My Pinkie Sense told me," Pinkie said, "You see, when I get a tingly nose with an itchy mane that means that I've forgotten a party. And since I know everypony's birthday in Ponyville, I knew it had to be you!"
Pinkie’s logic, although still strange seemed to make sense to Fred. In any case he was at least happy that he could have someone to talk to. “Ok,” Fred said to Pinkie, ”So when does the party start?”
“Right now,” Pinkie said, “Actually I have to get just a few things. I’ll be right back.” With that Pinkie dove into the television screen like is was made of liquid. Fred stood there, still trying to figure how she did that. He placed his hand on the screen, but it was the usual glass consistency.
“Coming through,” Pinkie said, causing Fred to back up. Pinkie then appeared with a small birthday cake and a record player. “Okie dokie,” Pinkie said as she reached back into the TV, “There’s just one more thing that I need: my Party Cannon!”
With that Pinkie hoisted out the canon like it was made of air and then pointed it at the dining room table. Fred stood behind Pinkie, not knowing if this thing she was going to fire would blow a hole in his apartment. With a loud boom, a shower of confetti and streamers was ejected. Magically his normal looking dining room table was covered in a table cloth with a sparkly centerpiece. She then fired the canon at an overhanging support beam and a banner that said “Happy Birthday Freddy” appeared. Another blast and snacks and drinks appeared in the kitchen area.
Pinkie kept firing the cannon a few more times, making balloons and streamers fly all over until his living room and dining room was decked out in party fun.
“So, what do you think,” Pinkie said.
“Wow Pinkie! This is amazing!” Indeed it was, for Fred never seen such a festive party like this since he was a kid.
“So what are we standing around here for, Freddy,” Pinkie said as she turned on the record player, “Let’s party!”
And the two did party. Both Fred and Pinkie danced, had snacks, played games, and laughed until their stomachs hurt.
“Ok, now for the cake,” Pinkie said as she lit the candles on the cake. She then turned off the lights so that the only ones remaining were the tiny flames. And then Pinkie sang:
“Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday dear Freddy,
Happy birthday to you!”
“Ok. Now make a wish and blow out the candles!”
Fred thought for a moment about the one thing he would want in his life. Then he had an idea. It was a strange and probably impossible wish, but tonight on his magical birthday night maybe he had a chance. Then he blew out the candles.
“Yay,” the pink pony said as she hugged Fred so tightly that he felt like he was going to explode. The two then divided the cake and ate it with smiles on their faces.
“Wow, Pinkie! This is the best birthday cake I had ever!”
“I’m glad you like it Freddy,” Pinkie said.
The two talked for a few hours after until it was clear both were getting tired.
“I… (yawn) don’t want this night to last,” Fred said.
“Me neither,” Pinkie replied.
“I really had a fun time with you Pinkie Pie. Thanks for giving me the best birthday party ever.”
“You’re welcome Freddy! I’m glad to see you smile.”
“Do you think I’ll ever see you again?”
“Sure you will silly Freddy! If you ever need a cheering up, just say my name and I’ll be there. Now off to bed with you. Don’t worry about the mess. I’ll have it cleaned up in a jiffy!”
Fred gave Pinkie one final hug before retiring to his room. No sooner than he rested his head on his pillow he floated off into sleep with a grin as wide as a mile on his face.
The next morning, Fred woke up. For a moment he thought maybe, just maybe, Pinkie would still be there. As he walked into the living room, everything was gone. The food, banner, balloons, all of it had vanished like it was never there in the first place. Fred began to wonder if what happened last night was all just a dream, which his mind thought up him meeting Pinkie and having a wonderful birthday party. But no, it was too real to be only a dream.
He went into the kitchen to get a snack when there next to the refrigerator was a pink balloon with a note on it. It read:
“Dear Freddy,
I had a super fun time creating that party for you last night! Hope to see you soon!
Love,
Pinkie Pie”
“Looks like that wasn’t a dream after all,” Fred said with a chuckle.
After breakfast Fred went out for the morning paper which was resting just outside his door. As he picked it up he was greeted by a big surprise. There walking down the apartment was a woman dressed in a pink dress with big pink hair.
“Hi there,” the woman said in a voice similar to the pony, “I’m Pinkamina, but you can call me Pinkie.”
“Nice to meet you Pinkie. I’m Fred.”
“Nice to meet you, Fred. I’m new to this town and I’m looking for a grocery store. I need to get some things to bake. Do you know of a store nearby?”
“Actually,” Fred said, “I was going to go to the grocery store today too. Want to come along with me?”
“Sure!”
As Fred and Pinkie headed out of the apartment, Fred knew that life would be sweeter from now on.
