Twilight's Glasses
Glasses
Load Full StoryAs Celestia’s beautiful sun rose over Ponyville, filling all the dark places with a warm, hearty light, Twilight woke up. She started her dreary morning routine, which consisted of; scrutinizing her mane and tail, cleaning up her desk, and neatening her bed.
Making breakfast for Spike and herself, yep, was as tedious as it sounded. After brewing up her favorite coffee, Twilight levitated the milk towards her mug, which said ‘Best PBFF in the World.' She tipped down the head of the milk carton, only realizing that it was a mistake too late; milk went flying everywhere, spraying the perfect marble bench tops with milk. She shook her head, muttering to herself and brought down a cloth, and cleaned up the spill. Spike walked in, and noticed she was wiping the cloth a little far to the right.
“Twilight, are you okay?” he asked, cocking his head.
“I’m good Spike!” she replied back nervously.
“Hmm...okay." Spike padded back to the other room, grabbing a quill and a piece of paper. Leaping up onto Twilight's chair, he began writing on her desk. He inked out a letter to Princess Celestia;
Dear Princess Celestia,
It has come to my attention that all of those books Twilight has been reading have been too much of a strain on her eyes.
This morning when she was making her morning coffee, she poured milk all over the benches.
When she was trying to wipe up her mess, she was wiping the entire wrong side of the kitchen.
If this is as bad as it seems, can we come to Canterlot and possibly have Twilights eyes checked?
Thank you for your time,
Spike
Golden Oak Library, Ponyville, Equestria
Within minutes of Spikes concerns, a document burst out of his mouth, it read;
Dear Spike,
I have also noticed Twilights lacking capability to see well recently.
In her recent trip to Canterlot for the Summer Sun Celebration, she was found reading a book upside down, squinting at the words.
Is she denying it?
If so, convince her to come to Canterlot and I will have my finest opticians on the case.
It could be anything from Discord playing tricks to her being short or long sighted.
Hope to see you soon,
Princess Celestia
Canterlot Castle, Canterlot, Equestria
Spike bounded up and walked towards the kitchen were Twilight was nibbling on toast and coffee.
“Hey Twilight," he started, as causually as he could manage.
“Yeah?”
“You want to go to Canterlot?” he asked.
“Why would we? We went just last week for the Summer Sun Celebration," she reminded him.
“I know, but I just thought it would be nice," Spike said.
“Well, I do want to see some of the new books in there library," Twilight mused, rubbing her chin.
Spike got up and shot towards his room to pack.
“Spike, pack for me, please!” she called.
Twilight knew what this was about; her glasses, of course. She had overheard Celestia talking about it when she was in Canterlot for the Summer Sun Celebration. She didn’t want them at all, however; think about what Rainbow would say! On top of calling her an egghead, she knew the mare's insults would just pile up. But, it was time, otherwise Twilight wouldn’t be able to enjoy one of life’s best joys; reading. She instantly called out at this thought. “SPIKE, I'M OFF TO SEE RARITY!”
“SURE TWI," Spike responded from the other room.
Twilight hung her saddlebag over her flank and poured all the bits from her jar into her purse. She set off, out the golden exit, down the dirty dull path, and over the straggly planes of Ponyville, to Rarity’s purple boutique. Once she reached the boutique, Twilight knocked.
“Yes dear, I’ll be back soon!" The voice paused for a few moments “It’s open!”
Twilight stepped in.
“Why, hello Twilight."
They pulled into one of their ‘friendship’ embraces. “What’s on your mind darling?” Rarity inquired.
“Rarity, I’m getting … glasses," Twilight stuttered.
“Oh my, Twilight, you’ll look beautiful!" Rarity exclaimed. “Especially if we curl your hair around the front." Rarity was always somepony Twilight could depend on, and she was always so understanding, so sweet.
“Rarity, I—what will Rainbow say?” Twilight's ears pressed back.
“Oh." Rarity pulled away, her brow furrowed.
“She already calls me egghead!” Twilight explained indignantly.
“I’m sure it will be fine Twilight," she assured.
“Really?” Twilight asked hopefully.
“Yes, now, let’s find the perfect frame for that head of yours dear," Rarity said. She bustled down a hallway, dragging Twilight by the hoof. She levitated a thin pink frame onto Twilight muzzle.
“Pass," Twilight whispered.
Next came thick, purple frames
“Pass," she muttered.
But, Twilight fell in love with the next ones: sleek glasses with a thick, black frame.
“These are amazing!" she gushed.
“Yes, well, they would look lovely if we..." Rarity trailed off as she pulled out her comb and inched the front of Twilights hair up.
“Perfect!”
“EGGHEAD!" Rainbow walked in, and tittered, “Ha-ha, oh, that is gold!”
Twilight held her hooves to her face as Rarity tried to defend her.“Now, now Rainbow Dash, is that anyway to treat a friend, or princess, for that matter?”
“B—But look at her glasses!” she chortled.
Twilight levitated her glasses down with a frown. “Now Rainbow, see if I care! I’m going to Canterlot, and I’m going to get my eyes tested. You just hope that when I get back, I won’t officially remove you from this friendship!" Twilight's vision of Rainbow blurred; she was scared at this point.
“Okay, Twilight," Rainbow said.
Twilight picked up her saddlebag and raged out, thumping closed the door of the boutique.
“See what you and your 'harmless' joke have done Rainbow Dash?”
Twilight stormed down the sprawling planes, across the dirt dull paths and to the golden door of the library.
“SPIKE!” she shouted as she opened the door. Spike, who was inches away from the door, flew back at the sudden impact
“LET’S GET TO CANTERLOT, GET MY EYES TESTED AND GET MY GLASSES!”
“Sudden change of thought, Twilight?” he asked.
“I had a little incentive," Twilight snapped.
Twilight and Spike headed to the train station, and approached the train, which anyone could mistake for candy. They set off. The cabin was hard, rocky and small. At one point the baggage fell on Spike as he was reading the latest issue of ‘The Power Ponies’. Twilight’s vision was getting worse and worse, she definitely needed glasses, no surprise really, after all those books she read. The ride was long, and the day was now done.
'We're off to Canterlot, not to have fun,' Twilight thought.
Rainbow was sitting on her puffy bed thinking about how to say sorry to Twilight. ‘Get Pinkie to throw a party, no it has to be from me...maybe I could perform a sonic rainboom when she gets back, or even alphabetize her library.'
Flutter walked in, and she could see Rainbow was distressed. “Uh, what’s wrong, Rainbow?”
“I think I bullied Twilight," she said sullenly.
“Now, now, don’t be silly, what did you do?"
“Well, for starters, I always call her egghead, I always mock her flying, and when she was trying on glasses at Rarity’s I laughed at her."
“Oh, well, I’m sure she will forgive you!” Flutterahy replied.
“She went off at me, Flutters.” Rainbow leaned a little closer to her Pegasus friend, “she said, that I better hope she doesn’t remove me from our friendship!”
“Well, the elements won’t work without her," Fluttershy reasoned.
“That’s true," Rainbow said.
Arriving at the Canterlot train station, Twilight vision worsened.
“Hello Twilight." Discord was there to greet her, much to her surprise, wearing a coat.
“Oh no." Twilight held her hoof to her head.“You’re my optician aren’t you?”
“Yup," Discord said proudly.
Princess Celestia appeared behind Twilight. “Hello Twilight Sparkle!”
“Oh, Princess!" Twilight went to bow, but ended up bowing at Discord.
“Wow, is her vision that bad?” Discord stifled a laugh.
Spike stepped out holding a bag. “Okay, where is the optici-?” He dropped the bag. “DISCORD IS TWILIGHTS OPTICIAN?!”
“Yep, best in Equestria," Princess Celestia said, and stepped in front of Spike levitating his bag back up to his hand.
“NOW, let’s get you some glasses Twilight!"
Twilight tripped over her hooves on the way to Discord's lab, over hard rocks, and over sticks and branches, until they finally reached the laboratory; Discord’s statue.
“I’m not going in there!” Twilight protested.
“Oh, but you have to." Discord gave a smile. “See you guys in a parsec!”
*FLASH*
Discord and Twilight disappeared into his statue.Darkness envelpoed Twilight, she couldn’t see anything, just black. Suddenly a warm, vibrant light lit up behind her. Discord was there, sitting in a patient chair.
“Welcome, to mi casa." He gave one of his huge smiles. “Now, into the chair, Twilight," he said.
Twilight tentatively stepped into the chair.
“Let’s get those orbs checked, ay?" Discord held out a light and shone it in her eyes, but he tutted. He then held out a piece of paper with 3d pictures. “Tell me, what pops out."
Twilight couldn’t see the pictures at all. “I can’t see them," she stated.
“Alright." Discord ran a few tests into a machine that ran on Unicorn Magic, it shot out a piece of parchment, laced in words. He once again tutted.
“What frame Twilight?”
“The thick black ones," she said.
Discord fuddled through his drawers. He pulled out a case, inscribed on the top was ‘Discord’s Specs®’ embodied with a smiley face.
“Here we are."
He put the spectacles on Twilights head. It all came clear to Twilight, and everything came into focus, revealing all the details of Discords home.
*FLASH*
Spike and Celestia were sitting on a nearby bench when Discord and Twilight popped out.
Twilight was wiping her new glasses, finally after putting them on.Spike stifled a laugh, as well as Celestia.
Twilight looked down at the ground. “They make me look horrible don’t they?” she mumbled.
“Uh… no." Spike still trying to keep in his laughter. He just couldn’t stand looking at her face, she looked like a know-it-all.
Princess Celestia just uttered. “Excuse me” She teleported off to her throne room and giggled.
Rainbow flew past, but didn’t notice Twilight.
“Oh, that’s right, it’s the Equestrian Olympics."Twilight ran down a path, shielding her face with her wings.
Rainbow flew through a giant horseshoe on the podium, still wondering how to make it up to Twilight. It was three more weeks until the Equestrian Olympics, and Twilight wasn’t due back to Ponyville for two days, giving her enough time to figure out an apology.
Twilight dropped her bag in her royal suite still crying, her glasses fogged up. She levitated them off her head, put them in their case and threw it in the rubbish bin at the far end of the room. She collapsed onto the bed, snivelling. Princess Celestia moseyed past Twilights suite, she heard weeping, and she edged the door open and saw Twilight howling on the bed. She teleported away.
POP
She materialized in front of Princess Luna. “LUNA!” she hollered at the poor, unsuspecting child of the night. Luna who was sipping peacefully at her tea sprayed it all out.
“I need you to check on Twilight," Celestia said.
“Why, whatever for, sister?”
“Just go to her suite, you’ll be able to handle it, I’ve never been much good in situations like this."
Princess Luna picked up her saddle bags, put her books and quills in it and slung it over her flank, she spread her wings and took off. Luna landed on Twilights balcony.
“Hey, Twilight!"
Twilight shot up, she cleaned up, and she put the pillows back in place and wiped her face. “Oh." She bowed at Luna. “I was not expecting visitors!”
“What’s wrong, Twilight?” Luna asked with a troubled tone; something was definitely wrong.
