Princess Luna's School of Magic

Chapter one

The big day, erm, night

Luna paced back and forth, each hoof impact echoing through the cool air of the bland hall that led back stage. Her sparkling midnight blue mane flowed in an eternal, imaginary breeze covering half of her excited expression. The hallway wasn't meant for show, so it wasn't overly decorated. It was, however very clean. Mostly because the school still needed to make it presentable for those who performed on or just used the stage.

Today is the big day, she thought to herself. After months of planning, recruitment and hard work it is finally time.

The back stage door opened and Celestia entered. Her summer-colored mane billowed in an invisible wind while she wore a warm smile on her face.

"It's time, Lulu." She said gently.

The midnight alicorn gave her sister an unsure look. Celestia knew that look from anywhere and she wasn't going to let it stay for long.

"Don't be nervous. I know it has been a long time but I trust you can do this. Besides I have asked my faithful student, Twilight Sparkle, to assist you. Everything will be fine." She gave her little sister a reassuring smile.

"Are you sure, Tia?"

"Positive." She gave her little sister another encouraging look, however one that wasn't returned as the younger alicorn's nervous expression returned.

"I said don't worry. You remember the speech you gave at your first school? There is no way it could possibly be worse than that." They both thought back to that time and shuddered. The kids didn't stop rioting until at least the third day.

"You have a point." They both shared a laugh.

"If it helps, I'll be right here beside you." Celestia told her sister. She put a hoof on her shoulder reassuringly. "Now go; you can't keep them waiting forever." Luna sighed and turned her gaze to the ground.

"I guess you're right." She looked up at her sister and hugged her. "Thanks, Tia, you have always known what to say."

"You're welcome Lulu."

They ended their hug then approached the door, and opened it, entering a night themed room. Since the classes would take place in the evening, the ceiling of the main hall was open, to allow the moon's light to shine into the hall. In addition, it was magically enchanted so it still worked as a ceiling, keeping the elements out. The room's color scheme consisted of shades of blue and purple. The room was set up like your normal auditorium complete with its very own stage, on which Luna now stood. The air was clean, and inviting. It was all designed to give a feeling of peace and knowledge.

Of course most of which was lost on the three hundred excited colts and fillies standing before Luna right now.

To her right was Twilight Sparkle, and her friends; Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, and Fluttershy. Each had a hoof in the creation of this school. Rarity designed the decor. Applejack helped choose the menus for the cafeteria. Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie helped with the recruitment of nurses and councilors. Rainbow Dash designed the physical exercises. Finally Twilight Sparkle was head organizer over every aspect of the process. The princess couldn't thank them enough for all their hard work.

To her left was a young unicorn filly, with a midnight blue coat, and a dark purple mane that was beautifully combed and hung over half her face. Her eyes were a dark blue that sparkled at the sight of her beloved personal instructor. She was neither the biggest, or the smallest of fillies. Even though she was not small in size, she sure acted like she was. The only pony she knew that was shyer than her was Fluttershy. She was embarrassed by her timidness, but Luna found it rather cute. She could still remember the day she hoof-picked her...

The midnight blue alicorn stood in the back of the room, next to the other examiners. She wore a hint of dissatisfaction on her face. Almost every candidate had passed, but none of them seemed right to be her personal student. Not only that, this was the last day of selection.

The examiners called for the next candidate. A small unicorn filly with a midnight blue coat, and a dark purple mane, cautiously poked her head through the door. After a minute of trying to decide whether she should enter or not, she slowly made her way to the center of the room. Her light hoof steps were only audible due to the dead silence that blanketed the room. The air was uncomfortably cold, causing the innocent little filly to shiver a little.

Luna felt sorry for the shy filly. The room was designed to be unnerving, and intimidating. The reason being, that the examiners wanted to see how well the student performs under pressure. However, she thought they went a bit overboard with the "dark room with single spotlight" thing. The little filly looked frightened to death.

"Please state your name." the examiner said in an authoritative voice.

The midnight blue filly hesitated a little bit, before finally stammering out. "S-Silent Night." Her voice was soft and gentle, with some timidness thrown in the mix.

The princess noticed that there were no parents in the room.

Were they unable to make it? Maybe they did not feel the need to attend? She pondered this as the candidate stood nervously and the examiners wrote something down, probably to make her feel even more nervous.

For this exam one could do one of two things; hatch a dragon egg, or cast an impressive spell. What interested Luna was that this midnight blue filly was the only one who signed for the latter, of those that had signed up that day. In fact very few students overall chose the spell.

"Please begin." the examiners told her.

She nodded her head bashfully, and tried her best to collect her already shattered confidence. She muttered to herself little words of encouragement and took deep breaths. For a moment there the alicorn thought she would be too nervous to do anything, until one of the examiners cleared his throat as a way of saying "hurry up." This caused her to jump a little. After composing herself again, she closed her eyes and began repeating something quietly over and over again. After she collected what she could of her confidence, she began to concentrate.

A soft glow surrounded her horn, as she concentrated purely on the completion of this spell. The glow grew brighter and brighter, as sweat beaded on her forehead. Suddenly an explosion erupted from her horn, flinging her backwards. She slammed into the wall, and slid down to the floor with an audible thud.

Luna felt sadness wash over her. This was usually the point where the candidate just lays there until she is helped out of the room. The alicorn had had high hopes for her. She waited for the medical ponies to be called in.

However something entirely different happened. The small filly slowly rose to her hooves, and began to concentrate.

She wasn't giving up. She was trying again. Curiosity, and hope, filled the Midnight blue observer. One the examiners opened their mouth to speak, but the princess of the night raised her hoof to silence him.

She wanted to see what happens.

The candidate concentrated harder this time, allowing her will to succeed to fuel her. The light around her horn grew brighter and brighter. Luna watched intently, as the timid filly, poured all her heart and soul into this single spell as if the world would be doomed should she fail. The shimmering around her horn continued to grow brighter, and she continued to strain herself more to the point the Night Princess thought she might pass out. Then the glow around her horn grew unbelievably bright and a flash erupted from her horn, followed by the emergence a starry night sky, whose darkness spread to blanket the room. Stars sprinkled in different spots, even a few shooting stars streaked across the space.

The examiners were dumb-struck. Luna was surprised herself.

This was a highly advanced illusion spell, which required a huge amount of concentration and control. This was difficult for even an skilled unicorn. Yet this filly just performed it only on her second attempt. This impressed, nay amazed, the princess of the night greatly. At that moment she knew that this shy little filly was the perfect candidate to be her personal student.

She stepped forward with a warm smile on her face.

"Silent Night, that is your name correct?"

The shocked filly snapped out of her wonderment, and nodded her head nervously.

"Congratulations I have chosen you to be my personal student, at my school of magic." Luna's voice was gentle, complimentary.

Silent Night's eyes went wide with surprise, as she took in the news given to her. Which made Luna smile inside; she always loved the looks of joy that ponies gave her when she delivered good news.

"I'll give you time to pack your things, when will you be ready?" she asked gently.

Silent Night turned her gaze to the ground as a sad expression spread across her face. The alicorn frowned. Before she could ask if everything was okay, the filly responded.

"Umm, well all my things are already collected. If that's okay with you." Silent Night said softly as she pointed a hoof towards a small bag that leaned on the wall.

Luna gave her a slightly confused look.

"Is that all you are bringing?" she inquired.

Silent Night looked away and turned red, then spoke very quietly.

"That's all I have..."

Realization hit the midnight blue princess. How could she not have seen it before? No parents, small bag, determination to succeed, it all made sense now. She was a thousand years old, she should have known.

Silent Night was an orphan.

She quietly reprimanded herself for forcing this poor filly into such an awkward situation. Then a warm smile spread across her face, for she knew exactly how to make it up.

"Okay Silent Night. You may stay with me." The surprise combined with the joy and excitement on her face was one of the most adorable and joyous things she had seen in her life.

Luna looked over the excited fillies and colts, and took a deep breath.

You can do this. She thought to herself.

She cleared her throat, and the hall silenced itself. The moon shone brightly through the ceiling, giving the Princess of the night a shimmering effect.

"Welcome colts and fillies to my school of magic." That was followed by a light cheer. Luna waited for the cheers to subside, then continued.

"You are the first students to walk these halls, and it is my hope that you all will become exceptional users of magic. There has been much work put into making this into reality. So please try your best."She paused for a moment, to allow herself a breath, then spoke again.

"The classes will take place at night allowing time for sleep and playtime during the day. Sorry if you do not like this schedule, but it is the only way to fit it in my schedule." A few grumbles were heard, mostly because most of the students there didn't dare to complain. She nickered inside. Children never failed to amuse her.

"Tonight you will be given time to find your rooms, meet others, and make friends, as Pinkie Pie has generously offered to throw us a party to celebrate the formation of this school (well actually she made it clear that she was going to do it either way). So please enjoy yourselves, and classes start at 7pm. Don't be late my little ponies." That was followed by cheers, as the midnight blue alicorn smiled again and stepped back to allow Pinkie to take the stage.

"Okay everypony!! Time to PAR-TAY!!" Pinkie seemed to brim with energy, as always, and began to play some loud music.

The room exploded into colts and fillies dancing, and playing party games.

Luna quietly slipped out with Silent Night. Being that the Night Princess had duties to perform, and the shy filly, not being one for parties, wanted to tag along.

The faithful student was perfectly happy being with her teacher. She spent every moment she could with the princess, and when she wasn't with the midnight blue alicorn, she was faithfully studying or exploring the Royal Canterlot Palace.

Not only that, she loved to make her teacher proud.

Shining Armor and Cadence enjoyed seeing her wandering the halls of the palace, exploring and trying to find new ways to learn. Silent is very curious in nature. At times her curiosity was so great it overcame her timidness. The best time was when she first met Shining armor......

The investigative little filly known as Silent Night, was exploring her new home. Normally she was shy, but her curiosity overwhelmed her as she snooped around, and in, the different halls and rooms. She slowly opened a door into a grand hall that lead to a huge door, and a big balcony. She then cautiously entered the hall, staring up at the decor with wonderment.

The room had a royal, and grand feel to it. It was also lavishly decorated, as well featured a breath-taking view of the city of Canterlot from the balcony

While distracted by the decorations of the hall,  she bumped into what felt like a steel wall, and fell back on her rump. She looked up in confusion to see a white unicorn stallion with a moderate cerulean, and dark phthalo blue mane. His eyes were a brilliant sapphire blue, and he wore purple armor. She immediately hid behind the door, scared by the sudden appearance of the rather large stallion.

"Wow. Celestia was right, you are very shy. Why don't you come out, I'm not going to hurt you." The stallion said in a gentle voice.

Silent slowly peeked her head out at the stallion, who was smiling amiably. In his mind he was thinking Cadence would be a lot better at this than he. Seeing that she was not going to move from behind the door, he tried saying something different.

"How about a name? Mine is Shining Armor, Captain of the royal guard."

Silent thought for a minute, then decided it would be harmless to tell him her name. After all, he had given his.

"S-Silent Night." She replied softly and quietly.

The royal guards scared her. How they stood completely still, with that overly serious look on their face. But something about this one seemed different. He seemed more pony than the others. She slowly came out to inspect this "Shining Armor". He watched on in interest, as she came out from behind the door and started examining every part of his body.

Curiosity shone in her eyes. First she touched his leg, and jumped back expecting a response. After the non-existent reaction she got from that little test, she started circling Shining taking in every detail. How he stands, how he is dressed,  even how he styled his mane and tail. He nickered when she knocked on his armor and jumped at the metallic sound it made.

Cadence will love her, I'm sure. Just look at how adorable she is. The white stallion thought to himself, as she finished her inspection of him.

At that moment, the large door opened, causing Silent Night to jump and hide behind Shining Armor, who smiled and greeted the newcomer saying, "Hello Cadence! I'm so happy you could show up."

"Me too, I can't wait to meet Princess Luna's new student," The newcomer replied as she greeted the stallion with a hug.

"Well she is right behind me. You might want to be careful though she is pretty shy." He motioned to the timid little filly peeking out from behind him.

Once again curiosity overtook Silent Night, as she studied the pink alicorn with the mane that consisted of dark violet, moderate rose, and pale gold streaks. What also interested her, was that her cutie mark was of a teal heart within a gold lace.

What does it mean? The little filly wondered, with a sparkle of inquiry in her eyes. The one referred to as "Cadence" must have noticed because she smiled warmly at the filly and said.

"It means my special talent is love."

Silent pondered that for a moment, with a really cute thoughtful look on her face. She had never known of a pony whose special talent was an emotion before.

The pink alicorn gestured at the filly's own cutie mark.

"What about yours? It's beautiful."

Silent looked at her own cutie mark. It was of a night sky. The stars, the moon, galaxies, planets, the whole bit, right there on her flank. Some have told her, that it was beautiful, or that it almost seemed to be real, even that the celestial bodies in it seemed to shimmer.

But the problem was, she didn't have the slightest clue to it's meaning.

"I don't know." Her voice was quiet.

The smile that Cadence gave her wasn't one of confusion, nor was it one of ridicule. It was one of understanding.

"My name Is Princess Mi Amore Cadenza." She laughed, when Silent started trying to pronounce her name, and told her, "But you can just call me Cadence."

The midnight blue filly smiled. "My name is Silent Night." She said in reply.

"Nice to meet you Silent Night." Silent grinned. Well you could call it a grin, but due to her character, it was kind of weak.

Silent Night didn't know why, but she felt safe around this mare, and stallion. She just knew that they could protect her, and would never harm her. That day she, Shining Armor, and Cadence all shared a pleasant, and quite interesting, picnic on the balcony of the great hall.

Everyday since, Cadence, Shining Armor, or both, would come to visit the small filly known as Silent Night.

Luna stood on the balcony overlooking Canterlot, with Silent Night by her side watching her intently. The sounds of the party could be heard through the double doors that remained closed behind the duo. She had other things to attend to, but she just wanted have a moment of rest before she did them. As a princess, she has many duties. One of them, was organizing the night Pegasai that oversaw ponys' dreams to make sure nothing very traumatic happens in them. Another was signing request forms regarding the weather.

Her foremost duty was indeed to coordinate the weather with the pegasi, sending water to where it is needed and withholding it where there is too much. The reason this was her job, was that farmers and towns turn in their agricultural reports at the end of the day.

Another responsibility she had, was organizing the night sky. She needs to make sure it is perfect. If the stars were out of place, then sailors and field scientist would get lost and quite possibly die. Not only that, the night sky helps one think. So it is an important job. One that her student loved to watch.

"Princess, how do you control the stars?" Curiosity once again sparkled in Silent's eyes. The teacher gave her student a warm smile.

"That's a good question Silent." The little filly grinned at the complement. "You see, I'm attuned to a celestial object. The moon. So because I am attuned to the moon, I can control other celestial objects."

"Like the stars?"

"Yes. But there is a catch. I can only control the ones that aren't already attuned to another."

Silent Night tried her best to understand the answer, once again getting that very cute, thoughtful look on her face. Luna loved that look.

"So if Celestia wasn't around, you could control the sun. Right?"

Wow. This filly is an excellent learner. The umbral alicorn thought.

"Exactly. Good job, at this rate you will be as good as Celestia's student in no time." Silent Night beamed.

"Thanks Princess Luna."

"You're welcome Silent. Would you like to see?" The filly nodded, happily.

"Okay watch closely." Luna gave her student a warm smile, then her horn lit up, and the stars in the sky began to move and disappear, then some reappearing. After she finished, the scheduled constellations were in their correct places and a whole new night's sky was displayed before them. Wonderment was displayed all over Silent's face, as the feeling washed over her. She had never seen something so awe-inspiring before.

"T-that's amazing."

The teacher smiled. Her student showed great interest in the stars. But now she could see it wasn't the stars she was interested in, but the magic behind them.

"Thank you Silent Night, I am glad you show interest in the subject."

Once again Luna managed to make her beam.

They spent the rest of the night talking and performing the Night Princess's royal duties (during which the student watched or tried her best to help with) until Silent Night couldn't stay awake any longer.

At the end of the night, the midnight blue princess tucked in the cute, timid, little filly. She had fallen asleep during the night court, while standing right next to her. Thankfully it was the last thing on Luna's list of things to do that Twilight had designed for her.

She sighed. Tomorrow night the classes begin. Hopefully everything will go smoothly. She reassured herself.

Of course it will, Twilight has made sure all the correct preparations have been made. What could go wrong?
