A not so silent night part one
The student stood across from her teacher as the instructor demonstrated an illusion spell.
"Watch closely my student. I shall demonstrate a basic illusion spell." Silent nodded her head absentmindedly.
The princess smiled then her horn glowed and a replica of the midnight blue filly appeared in the empty space on the grass next to a statue of a pony victoriously holding a flag with a star on it.
"The key is to visualize what image you're making."
Silent seemed to have her mind elsewhere. She couldn't stop thinking about that colt by the name of Practical Joke. He was so...... different from the other students. The foal shook her head clear, she had to focus on learning right now. Not interesting colts. Luna gave her student an amused smile.
"Are we back in Equestria, Silent Night?" The midnight blue filly turned red before responding.
"Umm, Yes. Do you want me to try it?" Her voice was full of embarrassment and quiet as well. She had never spaced out during a lesson before. The night princess nodded her head. The filly responded by returning the gesture and taking her "concentration" stance. She has this cute way of casting anything above a telekinetic spell. The bashful filly will lower her center mass, and close her eyes with a screwed up look on her face. She then concentrates purely on the execution of the task.
So you could understand Luna's nickering when she began performing the spell.
A midnight blue glow surrounded her horn, and an image of Luna appeared next to the real one. But it didn't last long. Nevertheless the teacher smiled.
The fact that she could do it on her first try, meant that what she lacked in power, she had in control.
"Fairly good for your first attempt." She told her student, " Now practice makes perfect so why don't you try making a different image appear?"
Silent nodded, then once again resumed her stance. She concentrated, and this time a duplicate of Practical Joke appeared, then faded after a bit longer of a time. Also the filly appeared to be out of breath, as if it was a strain in her.
A thought occurred to the regal alicorn as she duly noted this.
If she could do such an advanced spell as the one she performed for her exam, then why is my student having difficulty with basic illusion spells? It was a good question indeed for the princess. One that continued to trouble her for she couldn't find the answer. The alicorn pushed it aside for now, and focused at the task at hoof.
"Getting better. It will improve with practice." The instructor told her student. The latter beamed at the comment. "Would you like to take a break? You look exhausted." She then inquired her protégé.
"Umm that would be nice." The shy filly offered the princess a small smile. The mare of the moon nodded in reply. They had been working for five hours straight starting of with telekinetic techniques. The little filly deserved her two hour break.
It was half past midnight and luckily for the bashful student it was recess time for the whole school. Not only that a certain red colt just "happened" to be strolling by. Luna watched Silent approach her friend then observed the duo leave together.
I wonder how Twilight Sparkle is doing? She thought to herself as she began her journey to her office. Where more grades and paperwork awaited. Perchance if the alicorn was fortunate enough something interesting would occur in the next two hours.
" GET BACK HERE!!!" A certain bookish mare raged as the two foals ran for their lives.
"You told me this WASN'T a prank!!" Silent cried in between breaths.
"I already told you it was an accident!!" Joke yelled in reply.
Behind the dynamic duo Twilight was in pursuit. She was practically burning with rage and covered in frosting.
"You threw that enchanted cake on purpose!!" The midnight blue filly shouted a mix of anger and fear in her voice.
"I know! It was an accidental prank!!" The prankster answered as he rounded the corner nearly running into a group of students.
"THAT COUNTS!!" Silent yelled.
She turned the corner and was instantly pulled through a door with a soft yelp.
Before the filly could say a word the door was quickly shut and she was being shushed by her red companion.
"We can't let her hear us." The colt whispered.
The sound of hoofsteps followed by a screeching halt echoed from the other side of the door. Then a pause. After that the duo could hear the sound of magic. Following that, nothing.
The two foals sat there in fear filled silence for what seemed forever.
"I think she's gone." Joke whispered.
Suddenly the door let out a loud knock, as it bent inward a little.
"COME OUT I KNOW YOU'RE IN THERE!!!!" The bookworm yelled. The two friends screamed as the assault on the door continued.
"WHAT DO WE DO, I'M TOO YOUNG TO DIE!!" Silent cried desperately.
"Help me up here; I have an idea!" The colt replied in kind.
Princess Luna sat her desk in utter boredom. She had gotten through one stack of papers and had about twenty more to go, in addition the mare of the moon had also perfected her wastebasket basketball skills as well as origami abilities.
How does Celly's student ENJOY doing this? The alicorn asked herself. She was never really one for paperwork.
Luna stopped for a minute and stared at the vent located above her desk wishing something interesting would happen.
The vent was a barred hole at the end of a pipe, designed to allow warm air to leave the room and fresh air to enter. It connected to a network of tunnels in the building.
Suddenly her wish was granted as the metal pipe began to vibrate uncharacteristically. She continued to watch in interest, as it shook more and more. Then another noise accompanied it. A faint screaming which grew louder as the vent began to shake more violently.
Then it burst open, unloading a couple of familiar students onto the princess's desk sending the various stack of papers onto the floor. Directly after that, the opposite wall exploded revealing one Twilight Sparkle whom was quite literally burning with rage. Not only that, she was covered in frosting.
"NO ESCA-" The infuriated librarian stopped mid-sentence as she noticed the alicorn princess sitting at the desk wearing an expression of utter surprise. The flames on her back faded as her coat and eyes returned to their natural color. The filly and colt on the desk remained frozen. For they believed that the proverbial spit had hit the proverbial fan.
The four ponies all stared at each other for about a full minute. Paperwork and various other items littered the floor. The wall (along with many of the walls behind it) bore a big hole, with a trail of debris ending at the bookish mare. All in all the place would make the lord of chaos proud. Then straight out of nowhere Luna began to laugh. This caused the other three to stare at her in utter confusion and shock. Soon the librarian, the prankster and the bashful filly all began to laugh nervously.
This continued for an additional five minutes until it died down. The alicorn then smiled and asked the trio, "So what brings you three to my office?" She already knew the answer, but wanted to hear it for herself.
There was a pause, then all three of them began to speak all at once as if they believed that if the side who delivered their story first, would have the princess on their side.
This made the mare of the moon to chuckled some more, which caused the other three to stop.
Silent Night approached her beloved teacher and asked bashfully , "Umm does this mean we aren't trouble?"
"I can't believe I'm stuck in here with you two!" Twilight complained as she continued to write the phrase, "I will not go on a rampage in pursuit of two pranksters."
"Not my fault that cake was so conveniently placed." Practical commented as he copied "I will not enrage the librarian to cause major destruction to school property."
"You still shouldn't have done it." The midnight blue filly countered in her disappointed tone as she did her standards.
"In my defense I didn't go in there planning to prank her." The red colt replied, putting a hoof to his chest for effect. Silent then gave him a glare that was somewhat softened by her shy nature which only served to give it more effect.
Twilight, whom was previously angrily coping down the same phrase, now watched in interest.
The normally aloof prankster found himself sweating. He couldn't resist her stare last time and this time it was no different and the colt knew it.
The filly took her time for the effect to fully register before making her move.
"I already told you that pranking is mean. I am very disappointed in you." The princess's pupil said plain and simple. Silent made it exceedingly clear that she wasn't going to have any of it. The filly sharply turned around and resumed her work. Which spoke volumes.
The librarian and prankster exchanged glances then resumed their own punishments.
"NO! I'm mad at you."
"Oh COME ON!! Pleeeaasssee? I said I was sorry!"
"I said no. That is final." The midnight blue filly walked away eyes closed, head up, leaving the red colt in the night themed hallway with his head hung low in a defeated way. The moon light shined through the openings that lined the right side of the hall and the air was cool like it was on most nights. This all didn't help the now somber colt who began walking the opposite direction of the filly.
"Seems somepony could use some advise." A voice said behind him. He gloomily looked over his shoulder to find the princess of the night who wore a comforting smile. Normally he would have shown some form of respect, but he wasn't feeling to jovial at the moment. Besides, he never was one to respect authority. Something that Luna quickly picked up on. She also noted that he wasn't in a listening mood. An idea popped in her skull.
"How about a treat?" The alicorn offered which was accompanied with a small smile.
The prankster peered up in interest.
The gruff looking stallion was wiping the counter of his shop with a rag when the bell rang announcing the arrival of customers. He looked up to find his most common customer at this hour accompanied by a very young red colt.
"Well if it isn't Princess Luna." He said as the alicorn approached the counter with her companion.
"Hello Donut Joe. Nice to see you once again; I brought a young friend in need of cheering up." The princess replied amiably. Donut Joe's was the only quality donut shop that was open at that hour. Hence Luna commonly frequented the shop and the stallion also came to befriend her.
"Oh hello Joke! See ya got in to the school." Joe said to the prankster
"Hey Joe. " The red colt replied.
"Ya left some of ya stuff here; it's in the back." The red colt nodded and headed through the door leading to the back room.
"You two know each other?" The mare of the moon inquired as a smile tugged at her muzzle.
"Of course we do, he used to work for me." The donut maker replied.
She arched an eyebrow. "Work? Where did he live? Was there not somepony to take care of him?"
Joe shook his head then shrugged. " I don't know. He never had any family he talked about. I checked the city records out of curiosity and you know what I found?" He leaned in closer to the princess who wore an interested look.
"Nothin'. It was like he never existed." He leaned back and pulled out a mug and began pouring a cup of coffee.
Luna put a hoof to her chin in thought. "Interesting."
The gruff stallion took a sip. "So why the questions?" He inquired.
"My student. She has formed a bond with our mysterious colt." The alicorn replied.
He pushed the mug of coffee towards the mare who accepted the drink.
" I've seen stranger." The mare of the moon popped an eyebrow.
"Like what?" She inquired.
He chuckled. "Like an immortal alicorn princess who visits my shop every night and acts just like anypony I've ever met."
The both shared a small laugh like old friends. Well they were in fact good friends.
The back room door opened and the colt in question entered wearing a set of saddle bags. He sat down next to the princess as Joe produced a pink donut on the counter of which the prankster accepted.
Joke took a bite of the confection, then asked, "So what are you talking about?" His tone suggested he didn't know the topic of the previous conversation. The two adult ponies exchanged glances then simultaneously replied, "Nothing."
"Anyways should we not check up on Silent? She seemed quite hurt," Luna said as an attempt to send his attention elsewhere.
His ears perked up at the mention of the name. Success.
"Yes come on!" The colt said while leading the princess out the door.
"Bye you two!" Donut Joe called out after them.
The two ponies entered the night princess's home; Practical dropped his bags next to the door. Basically the hall that contained the mare of the moon's quarters and her protégé's as well; not to mention their washrooms. From personal experience Luna knew this was one of the likely places to find the filly. Another was the roof (even though nopony really knew how in Equestria she was able to reach it).
"Silent!" The red colt called out.
There was no answer.
"Where is she?" He asked aloud.
"The roof, I believe." The mare of the moon answered for him; as she gestured towards an open window that had a gentle breeze flowing through it.
"Oh...How do I-" Practical was interrupted as the princess picked him up in her magic and placed him on her back.
"I advise you hold on." She told the prankster as she spread her wings and shot out the window, the red unicorn clinging to her back.
The duo quickly gained altitude until they were above the school. With the light of the moon aided them in their search. Soon Silent was quickly spotted on the roof of the tallest tower of the school. The change of course was barely noticeable due to the princess's exceptional flying skills. Moments later the duo arrived at the opposite side of the roof.
"Aren't you gonna stick around?" The red colt asked as Luna turned to leave.
She gave him a knowing smile. "This is your affair, I trust you will not harm my faithful student." With those words she soundlessly took off into the night.
The moon's light coated the slightly slanted circular rooftop in a grayish glow. The stars seemed to shine extra bright over head as a cool breeze flowed across the area.
Practical approached Silent with an air uncertainty.
"Silent?"
