The Colors of Loveby Atlantis ProductionsChaptersThe PrologueThe SecretThe HeartbreakWhat Goes Up......Must Come DownThe Prologue“I want to apologize to all of you for getting so carried away with my...beautiful wings,” said Rarity to the rest of the Mane 6, “I guess I just lost my head.” “It’s okay,” said Fluttershy. “Oh, don’t worry about it, sugarcube,” said Applejack “We still love you,” said Pinkie Pie. “And I’m especially sorry that I was so thoughtless as to jump into the contest at the last minute after you worked so hard to win it,” Rarity said to Rainbow, “Can you ever ever forgive me?” “Aw, it’s okay. Everything turned out alright, right? I just wish I could meet the Wonderbolts when they were awake,” said Rainbow. A pony tapped Rainbow on the shoulder. She turned and gasped. “Ohmygoshohmygoshohmygoshohmygoshohmygosh!” Spitfire, Soarin, and Fleetfoot of the Wonderbolts were standing there. “So you’re the little pony who saved our lives. We really wanted to meet you, and say thanks,” said Spitfire. “Ohmygoshohmygoshohmygoshohmygoshohmygosh!” The Wonderbolts walked off, with one surprising exception: Soarin. “I wanted to personally thank you too,” he said. Rainbow blushed a bit. She tried so say something back, but she was too flustered. “Well, see you later, I guess,” he said before leaving. Little did Rainbow know, but Soarin was blushing a bit too, she just couldn’t see his blush because of his uniform was covering his cheeks. Then Princess Celestia arrived. “Princess,” said Twilight. “Hello, Twilight Sparkle, and hello to your friends too,” said the princess. “Princess Celestia, I am sorry I ruined the competition. Rainbow Dash here really is the best flier in Equestria,” said Rarity. “I know she is, my dear. That’s why, for her incredible act of bravery and her spectacular sonic rainboom, I’m presenting the grand prize for Best Flyer to this year’s winner, Miss Rainbow Dash!” The crowd cheered. “Ohmygoshohmygoshohmygoshohmygoshohmygoshohmygoshohmygoshohmygoshohmygoshohmygoshohmygoshohmygosh!” Pinkie Pie, Applejack, and Fluttershy picked up Rainbow to ride the wave. But after a few seconds they let her down. “This really is the best day ever!” “Uh, hey, Rainbow Crash,” said one of the bully stallions “Dash!” corrected another of the bullies. “Oh. Uhh...sorry. Rainbow Dash. Uhh, we just wanted to congratulate you on winning the competition.” “That sonic rainboom was awesome!” “Heh, thanks, guys,” said Rainbow. “Uhh, we’re really sorry we gave you such a hard time before,” said the first bully. “Aww, that’s okay. Don’t worry about it.” “Hey. Do you want to hang out with us? Maybe you can show us how to do that incredible trick!” “Sorry boys… But I’ve got plans!” Rainbow flew up to where to Wonderbolts were waiting. The three Pegasi then flew off into sunset. About a month or so later… The Mane 6 and Spike were all gathered around a table in the Canterlot Donut Shop. The Mane 6 all looked disheveled. “That sounds like the worst night ever,” said Spike. “It was,” said all of the Mane 6 at the same time. “But I just hope Princess Celestia isn’t upset with us for ruining the gala,” said Twilight. “That was the best Grand Galloping Gala ever!” said Celestia, conveniently entering the donut shop. Though how she knew Twilight and her friends were there is beyond my knowledge. “Pardon me, Princess, but tonight was just awful.” “Oh, Twilight. The Grand Galloping Gala is always awful.” “It is?” “That is why I was thrilled you were all attending. I was hoping you could liven things up a bit. And while the evening didn’t go as you planned, I’m sure you’ll agree that in the end it didn’t turn out so bad for this group of friends.” “You’re right, Princess. Friends have a way of making even the worst of times into something pretty great.” “Yeah! Hanging out with friends!” said Rainbow. “Talking!” added Fluttershy. “Laughing!” added Pinkie. “You mean doing exactly what I wanted to do the whole time?” asked Spike. “Yes, Spike. You were right,” replied Twilight. “As horrible as tonight was…” started Applejack. “...being together here has made it all better,” finished Rarity. “In fact, it’s made it…” began Pinkie. “The best night ever!” everyone finished. They all shared a laugh and Pinkie started up a conversation about cake. A few minutes later, Rainbow Dash said, “I’m going to get some fresh air,” and exited the shop. Only to bump right into Soarin outside. “Hey, Rainbow.” “Soarin? What are you doing here?” “I wanted to talk to you, since we didn't really get a chance to talk at the gala. I’m actually sorry for that.” “It’s alright. You were preoccupied with other ponies. I understand.” “And, um, I wanted to ask. Would you, possibly, maybe, like to have lunch with me tomorrow?” Rainbow blushed a bit. “Well, I-I-I don’t know what to say.” “It’s alright if you say no. I-I realize I’m kinda putting you on the spot.” “No, it’s alright. I-I mean, yes, I would like to have lunch with you.” “Thank you.” “No problem.” “So, maybe the Orange Cumulous Cafe in Cloudsdale?” “I love that place!” “Me too! So it’s a date? I mean, not a date-date, but more of just a hang out-date.” “Heh, I understand what you mean. Yeah, it’s a date.” “So, see you tomorrow?” “Yeah, sure.” Soarin flew off and Rainbow went back inside. Both of them were excited for their ‘hang out-date’. Author's Note Yeah, this chapter is rather unoriginal, and poorly written, but its whole purpose was to get the ball rolling and establish Rainbow and Soarin's relationship. The Secret“Are you alright there, Rainbow?” Twilight asked the cyan girl, “You seem a little, absent.” The two, along with the other girls were hanging out in A.J’s old barn. The disaster that had been the Grand Galloping Gala had passed by, almost a week ago, but today was the first that anypony had seen hide or tail of Dash. Naturally, the girls were worried, but Rainbow seemed alright. More than that, she seemed happy, even content, staring off into the distance with a vague smile on her face. “Equestria calling Rainbow Dash. Wake up, Rainbow!” Twilight clicked her fingers in front of Rainbow’s face. Rainbow’s eyes focused, but instead of snapping at the purple girl, she just smiled dreamily, and replied, “Oh hey, Twi. Sorry, I just lost track.” The others girls just stared at her, until she replied, a little defensively, “What? I just zoned out. Geez guys, quit eyeballing me!” “And Rainbow’s back!” Rarity announced from her corner, where she was peering over fashion magazines. “Haha, very funny, Rares.” Dash just rolled her eyes, but there was still a smile on her face. “You’re a riot.” “THAT SOUNDS LIKE RAINBOW!” a distant voice shouted from outside, “IS SHE NORMAL NOW!?” “Brace yerselves!” Applejack replied, moving away from the door, “Here she comes!” A violent explosion of pink flew into the barn, not from the door, but the window directly behind Applejack. A violent explosion of pink and orange flew across the room, ending flat against the wall. “Horse apples, Pinkie, watch where yer goin’!” came Applejacks exasperated sigh from where she lay under Pinkie. “Oops. Hehe, sorry, Jackie,” Pinkie replied, bouncing up to her feet, “But is it true!? Has our Dashie come back to us?” She spied Dash and with a loud squee, she jumped into her arms, causing her to wince under the weight. “Geez girl, for someone that lives on candy, you sure are heavy.” “Pinkie, where did you come from?” Twilight asked her, still chuckling. “Oh, I was entertaining the cake twins down at sugarcube corner!” “But… how… did you... you know what, never mind. I don’t want to know.” “I’m so glad you’re back Rainbow!” Suddenly Pinkie gasped and fell out of Dash’s arms, “I know what this calls for! A-super-duper-awesome-exciting-welcome-back-Rainbow-Dash PARTY!” “No, no it doesn’t Pinkie,” Rainbow sighed in frustration, “I’ve been here the whole time, just…” she blushed, “...busy.” Pinkie leaped up from the floor, and scowled at Rainbow, faces a mere inch apart, then with a satisfied smirk, leaned back and replied, “Ooh, Dashie's got a crush! So! Who is he, and where have you two been?” Rainbow stepped back, out of sheer surprise, tripped and measured her length on the floor. “W-what are y-you talking about?” “Oooooh, Rainbow Dash, you didn’t tell us you were going out with somebody!” Rarity sang, throwing her magazine down and approaching Dash. “Whoooo is heee?” “N-nobody! I’m not g-going out with anyone!” “What’s he like?” Applejack asked, a trace of something in her tone. Was it, sadness? “He strong, tough, and good lookin?” All three of them converged upon Dash, who was wildly looking for an escape. Surprisingly, Fluttershy stood up for her. “Leave her alone! If she doesn’t want to talk about it, then who are you guys to pester her!” As everybody stared at her, she blushed. “I mean, i-if t-that’s ok with e-everyone.” she squeaked. “So, you’re not going out with anybody?” Twilight asked. Rainbow wildly shook her head. “But, there is someone you are interested in?” Rarity smiled knowingly. Flushing a deep red, Rainbow slowly nodded her head. “Ahah! I knew it! Would you tell us who it is?” Again, a exaggerated shake. Rarity pursed her lips, looking thoughtful. “Are they famous?” A nod. “Are they royalty?” No. “Hmmm, not Blueblood then. Are you a fan of them?” A big nod. “Are they a member of the Wonderbolts?” Another big nod. Rarity stood before Dash, looking puzzled. “But there are no…” She gasped loudly and grasped the front of Dash’s shirt, “You can’t be serious! Not him, anypony but him!” “What? Who are you talking about?” Twilight demanded. Rarity pulled herself together, and spoke in a dead calm voice, “Rainbow, is the guy you’re interested in, the only male Wonderbolt...Soarin?” There was complete silence, as Rainbow smiled, flushed deeper. And nodded. There was the simultaneous sound of four girls gasping in horror. Twilight merely looked confused. “Soarin?” she asked, “Who is he? Is he kinda bad?” Rarity tried to replied, but couldn’t stop stammering, so Pinkie had to reply for her. “Soarin, is like, the biggest jerk in Equestria!” she yelped, “He goes through girls like I go through candy!” Twilight’s eyes widened. “Gee, you do eat a lot of candy, Pinkie.” “That’s not all darling,” Rarity finally managed to reply, “Rumor has it, he got Cloudkicker pregnant, then dumped her as soon as he got the news.” Rainbow snorted. “Nobody ever believes what that girl says,” she replied in contempt, “She’s a total slut! She probably got knocked up by one of her many different ‘Friends with benefits’.” “But still, that’s a big stain on anybody’s record, real or not,” Fluttershy whispered, “Even if it weren’t true, he still gets around, a lot.” “Are you sure about your feelings Rainbow?” Rarity asked her, “You may just be suffering from extreme fangirl obsession.” “Uh, excuse me?” Dash spluttered incredulously, “I’ve had enough relationships, good and bad, to know a meaningful relationship when I’m in one, thank you very much!” “Even so, it sounds like Soarin is a guy to stay away from, Dash,” Twilight replied, concern in her eyes. Throughout this tense exchange between her friends, Applejack remained silent. If only I could tell her how I felt. She thought to herself. Let her know that that total sleazeball Soarin is not her only option! She sighed. “Ah’m gonna go outside,” she stated, rising to her hooves, “Need some fresh air.” Once outside, she breathed heavily, feeling tears slowly trickle down her face. She took off her stetson and leaned up against a wooden fence, staring out at the countryside. “Sweet Celestia, Ah wish ah could tell her, she’s making a mistake!” she cried, punching the fence, “Chicken that ah am.” “I don’t think you’re a chicken,” a gentle voice replied behind her, “On the contrary, I think you’re incredibly brave, when it comes to doing some things.” Applejack whirled around, to see Fluttershy standing behind her. “Tarnations, Shy!” she cried, blushing slightly, “Yeh know it’s bad to sneak up on people like that. Y’all shouldn’ta heard that.” Fluttershy stepped backwards, and squeaked in fear, “I-I’m so-sorry A-applejack, I-I didn’t m-mean to overhear y-you, I was j-just coming out t-to see if you were al-alright.” Applejack suddenly realized that she was standing right over the nervous girl, and immediately backed up. “Geez, ah’m sorry Flutters, ah… ah jest…” She came up to Applejack, and placed a hand on her shoulder. “It’s ok, I understand how you’re feeling. It can really suck, loving someone who is totally clueless. Believe me I know, I’ve been there.” Applejack roughly wiped her eyes, and sniffed. “Who did ya like?” Fluttershy gazed across the land, before replying. “Derpy Hooves.” Applejack stared at her in surprise. “Oh yes, like you, my barn door swings a different way. I had been interested in her for many a day, but sadly she didn’t share the same feelings and ended up with Time Turner.” “Doctor Whooves!?” “Yep. Look, while you are too scared to share your feelings now, why not wait and see what happens?” Applejack hugged her tightly. “Thanks a lot, sugarcube. Ah really appreciate yer help.” They broke apart as angry voices thundered in the barn and Rainbow stormed out. “I’ll date whoever I want!” she shouted behind her, “And I’ll thank you to keep your nose out of it Rarity, lest it gets chopped off!” “Rainbow, wait!” Applejack called out, reaching a hand out to her. It was no use. Rainbow’s wings unfolded and she hurled herself into the air, headed towards Cloudsdale. “I hope she knows what she’s doing,” Fluttershy murmured. “So do ah, Shy,” A.J. replied. They looked up towards the clouds, where Dash had vanished. “So do ah.” Author's Note Oh boy. Drama! This chapter was written by my co-writer, TwilightAppleDash, and edited by your's truly. The HeartbreakThe next day… Rainbow Dash sat at a table in a Cloudsdale cafe. Across from her was Soarin, who had his face currently shoved in a pie, evidently enjoying himself from the loud slurps he was making. “Geez Soarin, you know, you could just use a fork,” Rainbow eventually suggested after a while. “Well, yeah I could, but how much fun did you have the last time you used a fork?” he reasoned. “Besides if you stop to think about it, I’m actually doing the staff a great favor by not using a fork.” “Oh really?” Dash replied, disbelieving. “How did you come to that conclusion?” “It’s simple really. By not using a fork, the fork won’t be made dirty. Therefore, because the fork is not dirty, it means that it’s one less thing for the staff to clean. I’m effectively saving the washer ponies time that would otherwise have been lost cleaning that particular fork.” Rainbow snorted. “Gee.” she chuckled. “That five seconds you saved them will really count towards something useful in their life.” Soarin glared at her in mock annoyance. “Laugh all you want, my dear Rainbow.” he replied in an aggrieved air. “But just imagine if not one, but twelve ponies went without using their fork, at five seconds a fork, they would get back a whole minute. Now, a minute may not seem important to you but in a cafe that runs for seven hours a day and let’s say in each hour, twelve ponies don’t use their forks. At five seconds a fork, times twelve ponies, that’s seven minutes saved each day. Then, let’s say this cafe runs seven days a week. At the end of the week, if twelve ponies an hour went without forks, that’s seven minutes a day saved and you would end up with forty-five minutes that could be better used serving more ponies than cleaning forks. That’s without going into how much time you would save in a month if you saved forty-five minutes a week from twelve ponies saving their forks in an hour plus…” Rainbow cut him off, laughing merrily. “Okay, you’ve proven your point mister smarty-pants. I will never use another fork in a cafe so long as I live.” “Just as long as I’ve gotten my point across.” “Fair enough.” After a short pause she said, “So, my friends say that you have a bad reputation when it comes to mares. Is this true?” Soarin was hesitant to respond. “Yes, yes, it’s true I’m sorry to admit. But I assure you Rainbow, that I’ve turned over a new leaf. Everything I’ve done is in the past, mistakes I’m not proud of. Rainbow mulled this over. “So my friends were right.” she said. “Maybe I should have listened to them.” She moved to get up, but Soarin grabbed her hand and looked her in the eye. “Rainbow, I’m asking, no, I’m begging. Please give me a chance. I am truly sorry for the mares I’ve wronged and I want to show you that I’ve changed my ways.” He pulled out a small, cyan-blue box from his pocket and presented it to her. Upon opening it, she found a necklace with two beautiful golden charms; one was a lightning bolt with wings, the other was a lightning bolt arcing from a cloud. Rainbow gasped aloud. “Soarin it’s so beautiful! Why did you get me this?” Soarin reached around the table and hugged her tightly. “Because I love you, Rainbow Dash, and I want to take our relationship to the next level. You know, coltfriend and marefriend.” Rainbow threw her arms around Soarin and kissed his cheek. “I love you too. But you didn’t have to get me this. I believe you when you say you’ve changed, I know you’re a good guy and I want to spend the rest of my life with you.” That evening… Applejack leaned against a tree in the middle of Sweet Apple Acres. Tears slowly trickled down her face, phone clenched tightly in her hand. She had gotten news of Rainbow’s new relationship status. “Is everything alright, Applejack?” asked her little sister, causing Applejack to stir suddenly. “Apple Bloom? Ah didn’t hear ya approach. What’re ya doin’ out here?” “Ah’m on mah way ta the Cutie Mark Crusaders clubhouse fer a sleepover, but ah s’pose ah could help ya out. What’s wrong?” Applejack rubbed her face and turned to her little sister, smiling slightly. “Naw, it’s ok sugarcube, ah jest got some… unexpected news.” “Weel, if nothin’s the matter, than why do yeh look like you’ve jest been at a funeral?” “It was jest, a shock that’s all. Y’all should git goin’ now. Don’t want ta be late now, do ya?” Apple Bloom surprised her sister by walking towards her and giving her a hug. “If ya say so. But, if yeh ever need someone to talk to, y’all can talk to yer little sis y’know?” Applejack wrapped her arms around Applebloom. “Ah love yeh, Apple Bloom.” she whispered, a few tears still trickling down her face. “Yer the greatest little sis anypony could ask fer.” “Ah love you too, big sis.” Apple Bloom ran off towards the clubhouse and Applejack made her way back to the barn. She turned to look back as the young girl met up with her friends. She sighed and wiped her face again. Oh, to be young and carefree, she mused, then turned back towards the barn. When she got back, she noticed Fluttershy over by the chicken coop, gently tending to the birds. She looked up upon Applejack’s arrival and got to her hooves. “Fluttershy? What’re ya doin’ here?” Applejack asked, “Shouldn’t ya be over at your’s tendin’ to yer critter folk?” “I came to check up on you. I got a text from Rainbow and I wanted to make sure you were alright,” replied the shy girl. “Are you alright?” “Uh yeah, ah’m fine,” the farm girl replied with false bravado. “Hehe, course ah am fine. H-how are y’all? Ah mean, it’s a mighty fine day.” For a few moments, Fluttershy just stood and looked into Applejacks eyes. Finally she spoke, “Applejack, I’m one of your best friends, please don’t insult my intelligence, I can tell when you’re lying. Now come on, sit down with me.” At this, she sat down on a nearby bale of hay, motioning AJ to do the same. “Now, I’m going to ask you again, but this time, I want an honest answer. Now, Applejack, are you alright?” “Alright, fine!” Applejack cried, anger mixing with her sadness. “Ah feel like ah’ve been betrayed! Ah feel as if mah heart literally broke.” AJ confessed, her tears increasing. “Rainbow Dash made a mistake, choosin’ him and not me!” She slumped down beside Fluttershy and threw her stetson onto the ground. “Ah love her, Shy, and she’s gone off with that fool, who’s gonna love her an’ dump her. Like he always does.” Fluttershy pulled Applejack into her embrace and hugged her tightly. “There, there. It’s alright.” “But it ain’t! She’s in a relationship with that jerk!” Fluttershy put her arm around the farm girl. Apparently, seeing Applejack crying was getting to her as she started crying herself. “Nopony ever said it was going to be easy, Applejack. I know how you feel, I went through the same manure you’re going through when Derpy married Time Turner. Depression? Betrayal? I’ve felt them all, and more. Trust me when I say, “It gets better”.” Applejack’s tears slowed. “Yer right. Thank you, Fluttershy. It’s jest hard, a-ah wish she knew how ah felt. If she was here, ah’d tell her.” “You’re welcome.” Fluttershy let go of AJ and stood up. “Well, it’s getting dark. I should get home and feed my animals. I’ll see you later, but just remember, I’m always here for you. If you need someone to talk to, you know where I live.” As she watched Fluttershy leave, Applejack picked up her stetson, and sighed heavily. “Off ta bed fer me, ah think.” she eventually said to herself. Today had been emotionally exhausting, to say the least. Little did she know, this was only the beginning. Author's Note And that's chapter 3. Let me know what you guys think because things only get better from here, well maybe not for Applejack. What Goes Up...Rainbow Dash opened her eyes to see Celestia’s sun well on the rise from her window. She stretched luxuriously and would have gone back to sleep, but for the sudden bleep of her phone. “Hmm, I wonder who that could be?” she wondered, smiling because she already had a pretty good idea who. The text was from Soarin, as she had guessed. Morning, my soaring princess. She blushed faintly, and replied; Morning, my dashing prince. A sudden thump on the door reluctantly forced Rainbow from her cozy bed downstairs. Upon opening the door, she saw a grey Pegasus, lying dazed upon the cloud outside her door. “Derpy!” Rainbow called, rolling her eyes as she helped the clumsy mailmare up. “What are you doing here?” “I got some mail for you, Rainbow,” Derpy replied and pulled out what looked something like a bouquet of crushed roses, daisies, and various other flowers. “Ohhh, are these for me? Thank you Derpy, you shouldn’t have,” Rainbow replied, sarcasm in her tone. Luckily for Derpy, the sarcasm flew over her head (pun not intended). “You’re welcome,” she replied before flying off. Rainbow closed the door and put the crushed flowers on the living room table. She then noticed a card that was attached to the bouquet. It read, “To Rainbow Dash, the love of my life. Happy four month-iversary. Love, Soarin.” It had been four months since Rainbow and Soarin had officially become coltfriend and marefriend, and their relationship was better than ever. All of Rainbow’s friends, while skeptical at first, had finally become convinced that Soarin had turned over a new leaf. Well, all except Applejack. She was still not very trusting of Soarin. She also was having a really hard time keeping her feelings for Rainbow a secret. More than once, had somepony else been in the same room as her, she would’ve accidentally blurted it out to them. Needless to say, life has not been kind to Applejack. As a result, she cut herself off from her friends, with the exception of Fluttershy. Rainbow threw away the crushed bouquet and texted Soarin, “Do you want to go out to lunch later?” After a few minutes, Soarin responded with, “Sure. Where do you want to go?” “How about Sugarcube Corner in Ponyville?” “Perfect. See you there, babe.” A few hours later… Rainbow Dash sat at a table in Sugarcube Corner. Soarin, yet again, had his face shoved in a pie. “Whoa, slow down there. It’s not like the pie’s going to sprout legs and walk away if you take a breather,” she said. “Are you asking me to use a fork again?” Soarin asked her, waggling his eyebrows. “No, I’ve already lost that debate,” she chuckled, “I’m just saying, take your time is all. Who knows, you might enjoy it more.” “Mm, I think I’ll stick to stuffing my face in it. It’s more fun.” Rainbow laughed a bit. “You know, the way you eat pie reminds me of how Pinkie eats basically anything. That girl can unhinge her jaw like an Anaconda.” “Yeah she’s weird, but in a likable way.” He paused, and put his pie down. “So, Rainbow. I was just wondering if we could take our relationship a step further.” “What are you suggesting?” “I’m suggesting that maybe you’d like to move in with me?” “That sounds like a great idea! I’d love to. I’m gonna go tell my friends.” Rainbow quickly kissed him on the cheek and ran off. Soarin just stuffed his face in his pie again. “That sounds like a horrible idea!” shouted Twilight. “What! Why?” asked Rainbow to the bookworm. Rainbow, Twilight, and the rest of the Main Six, sans Applejack of course, were all gathered in Twilight’s library. “You two just started dating four months ago. It’s way too early for you to be moving in with him.” “Oh yeah? And how would you know? The closest you’ve ever gotten to a relationship is accidentally bumping in that Flash Sentry guy, and I can’t even remember you saying a word to him.” “Ooh, burn,” said Pinkie Pie. “Shut up, Pinkie,” said Twilight. “Rainbow does have a point,” said Rarity to Twilight. “Thank you. Come on, Twilight. Don’t you trust me enough to believe I know what I’m doing.” “I do, it’s just your relationship seems to be going a bit too fast.” “I agree with Twilight,” said Fluttershy, “This is a big, life-changing decision, Rainbow.” “Do you really mean that? Or are you just saying that because you don’t trust Soarin?” “Rainbow, you know that’s not true,” said Twilight, “He’s proven himself to be very trustworthy. We just don’t want you to rush into any decisions that you might later regret.” “Why would I regret this? It’s not like moving in with Soarin’s going to weaken our relationship. If anything, it’ll strengthen our relationship.” “Well, I don’t think I can really argue with that,” Twilight sighed, “If this is what you want, Rainbow, then go for it. But just be careful of what happens next.” “There’s no need to worry about me, Twilight. Nothing bad will happen between me and Soarin. You can count on that.” “Don’t jinx it!” shouted Pinkie suddenly, “I’m rooting for you two. I don’t want you to become victim of Murphy’s Law!” “What do you mean?” asked Rainbow. “Murphy’s Law is the facetious proposition that if something can go wrong, it will,” explained the hyper-active pinkette. “Trust me, Pinkie. Nothing bad is going to happen.” “Alrighty. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.” Applejack tilted back her bottle, draining it in one gulp. She burped and threw it over her shoulder. It shattered noisily on the floor. Applejack was currently in the cellar to the barn, where her family kept all of their cider. She took another bottle off a nearby shelf and drank it down in one gulp, just like the one before it, and the one before that one, and the one before that one. She continued this process for a good five minutes. Pick up bottle, uncap it, drink it all down, throw it away, pick up another bottle, and repeat. Finally, Big Mac came down into the cellar looking for her. He saw the pile of broken glass on the floor and the bottle in her hand. However, before Applejack could drink this bottle, he grabbed it out of her hands and said, “Enope, you’ve had enough.” Applejack replied with a slurred, “Ah’ll tell ya *hic* when ah’ve had enough *hic*, Mac.” “Ah don’t think so, sis. You’ve nearly drank a quarter of ar cider stock.” “Gimme back *hic* that bottle, Mac, before ah *hic* force ya ta.” So saying, she swung at him, causing him to duck. “Alright, that’s it, Lil’ Missy!” Big Mac grabbed Applejack and walked up the stairs, carrying her over his shoulder, despite her protests, curses, and threats. He carried her right up to her bedroom, placed her gently her bed, and stood in front of her door, blocking her exit. “Let me out *hic*, Mac,” she said. “Enope. Yer not leavin’ this room until you git that alcohol outta yer system.” “What *hic* ‘bout if ah have ta use *hic* the little filly’s room?” Mac thought about that for moment before replying, “Ya know, fer a drunk pony, yer pretty smart.” “Thank *hic* ya.” Big Mac exited the doorway, but made sure to bar the door with a chair. Then he went off to search for anything that could help in this situation. He searched through the barn until he found a chain and a padlock, which he used to lock the door to the cellar. When he returned, it was to the sound of banging on the door. “Hey, *hic* ya crooked son of a *hic* mule! Let me out *hic*!” Applejack yelled. “When ah get outta here, y'all be sorry *hic* ya was ever born, bucko!” Mac opened the door, and Applejack fell out, face first. He quickly helped her up and ushered her back into the room. “Can’t keep mah eye off ya fer more’n a second, can ah?” he muttered in exasperation. “But ah can’t though. Not if ah wanna get th’ work around the house done.” Mac picked up a phone from Applejack’s dresser and dialed a number. After hearing the dial tone, the pony on the other end picked up. “Yes?” said a gentle voice. “Hey, Fluttershy. Listen, ah’ve got somethin’ ta ask of ya.” Author's Note Oh boy. That's really all I can say. ...Must Come DownRainbow snuggled closer to Soarin, wrapping her arms around him. He looked down at her and nuzzled her soft mane. The pair were currently lying in bed at the conclusion of another fairytale day, full of blossoming love and time spent together. As Rainbow rested her head on Soarin’s shoulder, she was happy she had decided to move in with the love of her life, despite what the girls may say. It had been a couple of months since they had moved in together. The girls had come around, eventually. Rarity had seen the two together and had accepted it. Pinkie was backing them from the start, and Twilight had decided to mind her own business. Fluttershy however was strongly opposed to the couple’s decision and would have nothing to do with either Rainbow or Soarin. Reflecting upon this made Dash sad, and she kissed Soarin again. She and Flutters had known each other for a very long time, far longer than they had known the others and they looked upon each other as sisters. That left Applejack. Applejack was…well, she was different, that's for sure. She also avoided Dash like the plague and was always drunk on the rare occasion that they did meet. She was usually short tempered and nasty, either lashing out whenever Dash tried to talk to her, or galloping away. Soarin interrupted her musings by pulling her closer and kissing her. “I love you,” he said after he pulled away. “I love you too,” Rainbow responded, looking deep into his eyes. They lay down together and were both quickly asleep, tight in each other’s sweet embrace. One fateful day about a month later… “Hand me that book of Magical and Mythical Creatures, Spike,” Twilight called from the top of a bookshelf, “I’ve got just the perfect place for it.” Today was a good day for a little spring cleaning she had reasoned, upon waking that morning. Over the past couple of days she and the others had been kept busy with friendship matters in Equestria. Fortunately, it looked like being a free and easy day. Spike grabbed the book and reached up to hand it to Twilight, when his stomach began rumbling. “Uh, T-Twilight?” “Almost...just a little higher,” Twilight replied, her hand closing on the book, “Aha...-” Suddenly Spike doubled up and burped up a scroll. As he doubled up, his grip on the book tightened. Twilight let out a sharp cry as she was pulled down from her precarious position and grabbed the shelf to keep her balance. The shelf gave way, bringing Twilight down on top of Spike, with a good few books. As the resulting dust cloud cleared, Spike smile nervously at Twilight, whose left eye was twitching, ever-so-slightly. “Um, sorry?” he replied hopefully. “SPIKE!” Twilight cried, but her attention was caught by the scroll that Spike had burped up, “Oh, a letter from Princess Celestia!” She climbed out of the book pile and levitated the scroll closer. Upon opening it, her previous occupation was completely forgotten. Dear Twilight, I have gotten wind of your latest accomplishments with your friends. I want to congratulate you for spreading the Magic of Friendship across Equestria. Sincerely, Celestia Twilight was interrupted from the letter by the arrival of one energetic pink pony. Pinkie came flying, not from the door, but from the roof, leaving a hole and landing on top of Twilight. “Twilight!” Pinkie called out, not seeing her, “Twilight?” “Right here Pinkie,” came a resigned voice from under her. Pinkie looked around in confusion. “That sounds like Twilight, but why is she so muffled?” She squealed as she was enveloped in a glowing lilac ball of magic and lifted in the air. “Ooh, shiney sparkley!” She spied a ragged Twilight getting to her feet. “Did I sit on you? Hehe, that’s the second time already!” Twilight set Pinkie down, none too gently and shook her mane out. “Can I help you?” “I came to see if you wanted to throw a hangout party! You’re the first person I’ve asked, but the others will come around.” Twilight began the arduous task of placing each book back into it’s rightful place. “Actually, Pinkie, I’m really busy. Sorry, but I’ve got a lot of tidying to do.” “Ooh, what is that!?” She knocked Twilight over again as she grabbed the scroll. “WOW! It’s from Princess Celestia!” There was rare silence as Pinkie concentrated on the scroll. Twilight began backing away as Pinkie’s face brightened and her mane and tail puffed up. That could only mean one thing. “You know what this calls for? A PARTY!” Pinkie’s sudden burst of enthusiasm deafened Twilight and it was a few moments before her ears stopped ringing enough for her to reply. “I uh, don’t know if that’s a good idea, Pinkie.” This time, she was prepared and blocked her ears as Pinkie continued. “AWHHH! WHY NOT!? Celestia herself thanked us for doing what we do best!” “I don’t know how many of us could attend. I’m sorry Pinkie, but as I said before, I need to get this place looking tidy again.” A shrewd, cunning look entered Pinkie’s eye. “Well, okay then,” she turned and headed for the door, “I’m sure Rarity, Fluttershy, and Applejack will come.” “Don’t count on Applejack’s appearance,” Twilight replied, eyes focused on her task. “Last time I saw her, she was drunkenly threatening ponies trying to buy from her stand. She’s not really with it anymore.” Pinkie halted in her path. “Gee, you’re right. Come to think of it, I haven’t seen her around much. I think I’ll pay her a little visit.” “Well, if you must, but why not invite Rainbow too? I’m sure she’ll be there.” Twilight was more than a little shocked to see Pinkie’s originally puffy mane suddenly sag and she slumped. “To be honest Twi, I haven’t seen Rainbow around either. She’s up in Cloudsdale, with Soarin. I’ve gone up there a few times, but every time I pop around, she’s not there.” “Why not post her the invite, I’m sure she’ll get it then.” Pinkie gasped and her mane puffed up again. “Gosh, but I didn’t think about that! See ya later then, I’ll get right on that!” Pinkie dashed off, leaving a trail of pink behind her. Twilight was left alone with Spike. “Why do you suppose Rainbow has been so distant lately?” Spike asked, holding a pile of books. A frown crossed Twilight’s face. “I don’t know Spike, I don’t know. I just hope that Pinkie’s visit to Applejack goes alright.” “Applejack! Come out!” Pinkie stood outside A.J’s barn. She knocked. No reply. She shivered a little, for the sun was beginning its decline. She knocked on the door again, this time Big Mac answered the door. “Hey, Big Mac, is Applejack home?” she asked. “Enope.” “Then where is she?” “She’s been livin’ at Fluttershy’s fer about three months.” “What? Why didn’t I know that? We’re probably cousins, after all.” Mac shrugged. “Ya didn’t ask.” “So, why is AJ with Fluttershy?” “Well, she’s bin havin’ a drinkin’ problem lately. Ah haven't got no idea why, though.” “Well I’d better get over there. See you around!” Pinkie said, before bouncing off. The sun had well and truly set by the time Pinkie arrived at the cottage. Heaving and panting for breath, she knocked on the door. There was no response, so Pinkie put her ear to the door. She heard a muffled banging sound, followed by Fluttershy’s soft tone, barely audible through the door. “Oh dear, Applejack don’t you think you’ve had enough yet?” There was a loud shatter, followed by AJ’s slurred mumble. “Don’t *hic* yeh try’n *hic* tell meh ah *hic* had enuff, m’bucko *hic*!” “Now AJ, I think it is time you stopped. I mean, look at this place, it’s a ruin! Look at you, you’re a mess!” “Naw, *hic* ah’m fine, jest *hic* fine d’ye hear me?!” Pinkie knocked again, then resumed listening through the door. “Oh, someone’s at the door! Just stay here, and stay quiet.” Pinkie heard hoofsteps approaching the door, then it opened slowly. She could just make out Fluttershy’s face and she bit back a gasp. Flutters looked terrible, she looked exhausted and more than a little crabby. “Yes, what do you want?” she asked, surprisingly harsh. Then she gasped as she recognized Pinkie. “Pinkie! What are you doing out here so late?” “Well, I came to ask if you and Applejack would like to come over to Sugarcube Corner tomorrow! We’re having a super-duper-awesome-exciting-totally-funbelievable party!” Fluttershy looked back inside her cottage for a second, then said, “I really wish I could, I really do, but I kind of have my hands full.” She jumped as a raucous voice sounded from inside the house. “What’s *hic* all this *hic* about a *hic* party?” There was a loud commotion and Fluttershy disappeared back inside. “Nothing, Abby. Give me that bottle, you should really stop drinking that.” “Then why *hic* di'n't ya *hic* lock it away *hic*?” There was a short moment where Fluttershy didn’t say anything. Then finally she said, “You know, for a drunk pony, you’re pretty smart.” “Abby?” Pinkie asked Fluttershy. “That’s Applejack’s real name, Abigail.” “I thought is was ‘Jacqueline’.” There was a sound of glass breaking. “AJ, what did you break this time?” asked Fluttershy, irritably, “I’m sorry, Pinkie. I apparently need to lock away the cider, though I doubt that will work. See you later.” The door closed, and after a few seconds of concerned waiting, Pinkie bounced off. Meanwhile… Rainbow stared at the bright pink invite in wonderment. It had been a while since she had last caught up with the girls. She absent-mindedly felt her eye. Maybe it would be a good idea. “Babe, come in here,” she was interrupted by Soarin’s yell. She took a last look at the invite, then quickly balled it up and placed it in the trash. Upon entering the room, she found Soarin laying on the bed, watching TV and stuffing his face with the inevitable pie. Rainbow sighed inwardly as she contemplated the pie. Once a symbol of fresh love and friendly debates, the pie had come to signify something else. “You wanted something?” she asked, avoiding his eye. “Sit down with me,” he replied, patting the bed and making room for her. Rainbow gingerly sat down beside him and he kissed her lightly on the cheek. “How are you doing, sweetheart?” he murmured in her ear. “I’m fine, babe,” she replied and kissed him back. “Can I ask you something?” They pulled back to look at each other and Rainbow sighed in relief as she realized that he was sober today. “Sure Dashie, what did you want?” “I was just wondering, it’s been a while since I caught up with my friends and I was just thinking about them. Would.. it be ok if I, went down to Ponyville and visited them tomorrow?” She held her breath as Soarin frowned in thought, hoping against hope that he would agree. “Sure,” he finally replied and smiled. “Yeah, why not? I mean, I’ll be busy myself tomorrow with Spits and Fleety. Wonderbolt training you know.” “So I can go?” Rainbow asked, excitement rising within her. “Yeah, go to Ponyville, spend the day with your friends, get out of the house.” Rainbow threw her arms around him and kissed him deeply. “Oh thank you, Soar, I can’t wait to see my friends again." They lay down together and Rainbow’s last thoughts were on her coltfriend. He’s not a bad guy, she told herself, No matter what people say. The next day… Rainbow Dash gently landed on the ground, just outside Sugarcube Corner. Suppressing a groan as her wing twinged with pain, she pushed open the door and walked into the cafe. As she did so she was greeted by an explosion of a party cannon, and a pink blur jumped out at her, bubbling with happiness. “OhMyGoshOhMyGoshYouCame!!!” Pinkie exclaimed, throwing her arms around Dash. Unbeknownst to her, this action caused Rainbow to wince slightly. “Uh, ye-yeah I came. Of course I came. Why wouldn’t I?” After extricating herself from the party girls embrace, she glanced around. “Am I early?” “Not quite, darling.” Rarity replied, stepping out from the cafe kitchen. “It would seem that this is everyone, with the exception of Twilight, who’s on her way, I think.” “Huh? Wait, where's AJ?” Rainbow replied in confusion. “Where’s Fluttershy?” “Fluttershy stayed home to look after Abby,” Pinkie said. “Abby?” Rainbow and Rarity asked in unison. “AJ didn’t tell you guys either? Her real name is Abigail.” “I thought is was 'Jacqueline',” said Rarity. “That’s what I said.” They were interrupted by the arrival of Twilight. “Hey, everypony,” she said, “Sorry I’m late.” “It’s quite alright, darling,” said Rarity, “The party hasn’t quite started yet.” “Thanks for waiting, anyways.” She stopped dead still and looked at Rainbow. “Uh, something the matter, Twi?” Rainbow asked her, somewhat uncomfortable. “Rainbow, did you fall on the way here or something?” Rainbow was confused by this. She couldn't fathom what Twilight meant. She hadn't fallen today. Or even this week. Yeah, she’d taken a few small bruises when she accidentally crashed into a tree, but other than that, nothing. With a befuddled expression she asked, “What do you mean?” Rarity spoke up and said, “Your eye, darling.” Rainbow reached up and touched her left eye. “Oh, that,” she quietly replied, “It’s nothing.” “Well then what happened?” Twilight said, concern in her tone Rainbow said, a little louder this time, “I said it's nothing. I just, uh, landed badly in one of my tricks.” “Darling, are you quite sure?” Rarity asked her, approaching her, “I think it’s something more than that. I saw you arrive from the kitchen window. You grabbed your wing rather sharply.” Inwardly, Rainbow panicked. Celestia, what do I do! she thought to herself. “Nonono, it’s fine. I just landed badly and collided with a tree the other day,” she stammered. “Did Soarin do this to you?” Pinkie whispered, her crazy mane and tail deflating slightly. “No! I already told you what happened!” Rainbow almost shouted, “I-I’ve gotta go, somewhere to be.” She backed up and ran out of the shop. “Well, that was weird,” said Pinkie, “She didn’t even have a slice of the cake I made.” Twilight and Rarity both gave Pinkie ‘Are-you-kidding-me?’ looks. “What?” “I’m beginning to worry about Rainbow,” said Twilight, “After seeing her like that, I’m not entirely convinced Soarin did turn over a new leaf.” “Ditto,” said Pinkie, “I was rooting for them.” Over the next three months, the girls would see Rainbow less and less, and when they did see her she was pretty banged up. Whenever one of the girls asked about it, Rainbow would just say she got into a flying accident. At least that’s what she said. All her friends really knew was something was different about her, they just couldn’t pinpoint what. And after Fluttershy could no longer handle taking care of Applejack, she moved back into her barn, but was still trying to get as much cider as possible, forcing Big Mac to ask Twilight to cast a barrier spell on the cellar door, which she gladly did. Simply put, no longer did any of their lives seem normal. And things would only get worse. Author's Note "What goes up, must come down." -Isaac Newton, the guy who discovered gravity. The Prologue“I want to apologize to all of you for getting so carried away with my...beautiful wings,” said Rarity to the rest of the Mane 6, “I guess I just lost my head.” “It’s okay,” said Fluttershy.
