Burning fires, burning lives on the long distant roads
Through the lost mountains endless, so far away from home
Dragonforce: Soldiers of the Wasteland
It was not her night. It was a night, but it was not hers. Princess Luna stared up at the unfamiliar lights suspended in the firmament above. Every star was out of place. Not one constellation was recognizable to the Night Diarch. Even the Moon's surface was unfamiliar. She could not help but feel that she was no longer in Equestria.
It was not just the stars that told her this. The stench of death and decay hung heavy in the air. The land lay barren, only scrub brush growing, though she could tell that this place had once been lush and fertile. Worse still, her magic had diminished greatly. Princess Luna, Diarch of the Moon, had no more power than an above-average Unicorn in this strange, desolate land. She also couldn't fly more than a few meters at a time, seeing as her flight, much like a Pegasus', is tied to magic.
Strange stars, lack of magic, and a feeling of general wrongness pervading the environment, Luna could only conclude one thing. She had left her home far behind. As if to confirm this, the Sun began to rise. It was a torturously slow process. Normally, Luna and her sister, Princess Celestia would smoothly swap the celestial bodies, and the Sun would be well over the horizon in mere moments. The Sun of this world, on the other hoof, took several minutes and the Moon still rode the daytime sky.
Worse still, not only did Luna have no idea where she was, neither did know how she had gotten to this place. Her last memory was eating dinner with her sister. After that, nothing. Her memories were a blank.
With the morning light, Luna could see something else. Ruins, far to the south. The architecture was not unlike what she had seen during a visit to Manehattan, but it looked like it had suffered centuries of neglect. Above it all, one structure stood out. A great stone obelisk towered above the ruined city, standing as a beacon for all to see. Even this great monument had suffered the ravages of time. Steel supports could be seen where the façade had slipped away, and the white stone had been stained by soot.
Something about the monument called to the Moon princess. It might be just that it was the tallest structure around, but Luna felt like she needed to head for that obelisk. She did not know if it was her ultimate destination, or if the obelisk was merely a waypoint on her journey. All the Princess knew was that she had a heading in this desolate land. Resolved to find a way home, Luna began walking towards the ruined city.
Unbeknownst to her, the Princess was not the only being in the wasteland. A wasteland scavenger had been standing to her north, hiding beside a boulder and keeping an eye on her, jaw agape at the magnificent creature. As she began to walk away, the wastelander fumbled for his radio. Three-Dog had to hear about this.
