Ten years before banishment
The mare stood quivering after banishing her sister. "Get her!" shouted one of the few remaining guards. I turned to him and smashed a hoof into his face. The others fled after their leader was knocked out. I looked over to the dark alicorn as she was about to pass out, but still watching me wearily. Slowly, I walked to support her little frame with my own. "Come my lady, you need rest. It has been a long day," I said softly. She hesitated for a moment then nodded, slowly trotting with me to her room. "Why?" she asked suddenly. "Two reasons," I said,"first, above all, you are the only one who controls the night and therefore the day. Equistria needs you. Second, I took an oath that I would serve the princess of the night. That is you, no matter what you call yourself or how you change. You are my lady and I will serve till my last breath and beyond if need be."
We arrived at her room and headed inside. "Y-you are still loyal?" The black mare asked in disbelief. I gently lay her on the purple bed, my grey coat contrasting greatly. "My lady, there is nothing you could do to break my loyalty. I would gladly sacrifice myself for you. I give my oath to the lady of the night on my magic as a unicorn and on my life as a pony. So should I betray you, I shall die. So should I hide a traitor, I shall be forced to kill them and die myself. So should you be attacked, I shall fight until death. I thus give you the oath on my soul....I shall protect you as long as I am allowed. I will be on guard outside, my lady."
She had been staring at me in awe when she finally looked away. "T-thank you, Captain Graydawn. You are dismissed." As I walked out the door, I saw a group of twenty guards Quietly, I activated my magic and pulled out my sword. They all stepped back then one said,"We may not exactly like what's going on, but we trust you, Captain, but our loyalty still lies with you." I nodded and put my sword away, then said," Sleep here, I'm on watch. We don't know who will still be loyal." They nodded in reply and found places against the wall to rest. I got into position to take a long watch and quickly glanced towards the door behind me.
Five years before banishment
"At ease, Captain Gray, I just want a simple report before we eat." The alicorn said sitting on her favorite chair. I nodded and replied," No sign of Celestia in four months and the fallovers of the Sun are getting restless. The day and night guard have come to terms and while the day guard refuses to protect you, he will protect canterlot." She nodded and began eating.
As she finished she spoke, "I believe I should have a censort." She walked over to her bed and settled onto it. "Any stallion would be honored beyond measure to be chosen." I replyed watching her out of the corner of my eye. "An honor, you say, just why is that?" she asked interested. With an ear twitch, I answered,"To be the lover of the most beautiful and powerful pony in existence would truly be wonderous." "I have someone in mind." she states with a sly glance to me. Hesitantly, I ask, "Who, my lady?" With a warm smile, she says," Why you, of course, my Captain." At her words, I move to look at her fully. She pats the area beside her on the bed and beckons me over. With a smile, I walk over saying, "As you wish, my lady."
The day of banishment
"Celestia and the traitors have come, my lady." I say, pulling out my sword and looking out the window. She pulls me to her and lays a kiss on my lips. " I know, my Captain. In only a few moments she will be here. Keep the traitors busy, I will take care of my sister." With a confident nod, I place my lips to hers again and answer, "Of course, my love."
With a final flash of rainbow light, Nightmare Moon was imprisoned into the moon. "No!" I yell just as the traitors held me down. "You truly are loyal, aren't you Captain?" the sun goddess asked me. I was quiet for a long moment then said, "Send me too." She was taken aback and asked,"What? Why would you-" "Send me or kill me. I will not live without her. I can't." I interrupted. All was quiet until she spoke. "No, you will be imprisoned here only to be free if she ever returns." With that, her horn lit and my form began to feel cold. I looked down as stone began rising past my feet. With the last glare at Celestia, I say, "I rise only to serve her again."
One year after Luna's return
"Tell my, sister, what troubles you?" The white alicorn asked the blue furred alicorn beside her. "Just reflectiong on how many lost their lives in the time of my nightmare. The night guard, old canter lot, and....Captain Graydawn." Celestia smiled sadly at Luna's words then comfortingly said," Old canter lot is the forest now, but the night guard has reformed and Captain Graydawn yet lives in stone." Luna's head shot up. "He is alive? Imprisoned in stone? Where? I must find him!" she asked excitedly. "The statue guardens but-" Celestia spoke, but was cut off as her sister teleported out.
"Where is he? Where is he?" The goddess of the night said to herself as she looked over the stone faces. She let out a happy squeal when she saw the familiar armor in stone.
felt the cold stone of my body warm as if some pony had touched my shoulder. "My Captain....Graydawn...my love..." I heard fading in and out until the cold returned. "No." I thought. "Bring the warmth back." For the first time in a thousand years, I struggled at my bonds. Cracks began to form in the darkness, and then I was free, looking into the face of my lady. I smiled then slowly fell unconscious.
I awoke on not quite familiar sheets, hospitals always seemed to look the same. "This doesn't make sense. His magic says he's well over a thousand years old, but his body is only thirty-five." I heard a doctor say. As I sat up, the only pain I felt was a slight headache. "What happened?" I ask looking over my grey body and mane finding no injuries. "Someone send for Prinesss Luna! She wanted to be informed when he awoke. Now, you were found in the canter lot guardens by Princess Lunaand brought to the infirmary." Just after he finished explaining, a flash appeared and Princess Luna stepped to the bed. I stiffened waiting to see how this would play out.
"Leave us," she commanded the doctor and he soon scurried out. Suddenly, wings enveloped me and I felt tears on my shoulder. "Oh, Gray, I thought I had lost you." she said holding me tightly. "M-my lady?" I ask confused. Shesat in a chair beside me and explained her imprisonment, redemption, and what had happened in Equestria over the last thousand years. "...One thousand years. I..And you have been forgiven by your sister?" She nods and her hoof tightens around mine. "And what is to be done with me?" I continued. She frowned then brightened. "Well..." she said, "do you yet love me?" Without hesitation, I smile. "With all my soul." The smile on her face only widened and her emrald eyes sparkled. "Then she will do nothing for even if I must renounce my princesshood, we will be together." I started to speak before a voice interrupted. "That will not be necessary, sister. A thousand years is a long enough sentence for his crimes. He is free. Although, I should warn him if he harms my sister, he will perish." I nod and smile then say," I have come to serve you once more, my lady."
