One day, Rarity was sat in the Carousel Boutique staring out of the window for inspiration. Outside, there was just the average day in Ponyville. It was a town of great excitement but it seemed to live in routine. Rarity sighed and used her magic to levitate a scroll, a quill and an ink well toward her. She scribbled a quick note to her friends.

Rarity slipped the note onto her work desk, packed snacks, drinks and blankets. Her sketch pad and pencil were packed neatly into her saddle bags. She closed the boutique and set off to find her inspiration.
After about five hours of walking and short snack breaks, Rarity found herself in an open clearing. She gasped. In the clearing there was a huge lake and waterfalls that shimmered in the light. Off in the distance she heard soft crying. Rarity walked slowly around the lake and saw what looked like a unicorn. She opened her mouth to speak but her words were cut off by a sight that amazed her.
Instead of four hooves, this pony had a fish tail. She was a light shade of blue with a purple and pink tail. She had a star with the sea swirling around it for a cutie mark. But what amazed Rarity most was her unicorn horn. The mare looked up and glared harshly at Rarity.
"CAN I HELP YOU??" She snapped. Rarity stepped back but held firm. The mare stared at Rarity in awe. "Y-y-you're not a merpony..? The mare stuttered. Rarity had a confused expression on her face.
"I'm sorry, a what now??" Rarity asked. The mare face-hooved. She lifted her tail, as she did droplets of water rained down on it making it shine like a rainbow. "Oh my.... That is simply gorgeous darling. But why ever were you crying??" Rarity asked politely.
"Well you see, I'm a merunicorn, thought of as a dangerous bitch and shit. There are only six of us three mares, three stallions. The mares are me, the queen and the princess. The stallions are the king, Sea Shine and Pearl Shimmer. Pearl Shimmer is to marry Princess Sea Star but I have a really bad crush on him!!" The mare screamed. Rarity was confused. "I'm sorry, my name is Swirl Star and I am the only of my kind."
"Oh darling that is terrible but you mustn't fear, because someone will guide you and help you see the light." Rarity tried to encourage. Swirl Star just shook her head.
"You have not heard the legend of the merponies have you??" Swirl asked.
