Pretty Sparks in the Sky (Just for New Year's)
Big Mac sat quietly under a big oak tree drinking his beer and watching the party. He didn’t mind quiet. Quiet was good. Quiet was familiar. Everyone was laughing and drinking and having fun. The lights were bright and colorful. It reminded him of when he was little and he helped his mother paint the barn. They had seven different colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. It was his best memory. Just him and his mom covered in paint, drinking apple juice and watching the sun set.
He snapped out of his reverie as he spotted a rainbow-maned Pegasus make her way past the crowd to him. Rainbow Dash stood in front of the large red stallion with a grin on her face and a bottle of beer in her hoof. “Hey big guy. Need a drinking buddy? I could sure use one.”

Twilight was not having a good day. She was frazzled, in a word. There was just too much to do. She had a conference with the griffin ambassador tomorrow morning, tea with the princesses right after that, and a five minute break before she had to head to her lecture at Canterlot College. She had planned on writing her notes tonight, but Pinkie had dragged her to this damn New Year’s Eve party. Why was she here again?
She took a deep breath, wishing Sunset was here to comfort her. She always had the best massages….but no. Sunset Shimmer was in the human world doing Celestia-knows-what with human Twilight. Not only that but she had reason to believe that Sunset was cheating on her with….um herself? All Princess Twilight knew was she was just going to have to trust her marefriend with this one. It would be a lot easier to trust Sunset if she was actually here, but her next scheduled trip to Equestria was next week.
Twilight stared at her poor, sad looking glass of wine. Taking a sip, she sighed feeling lonely in the crowd of ponies. Suddenly everything went black, as Twilight felt a pair of soft hooves cover her eyes. She turned around to find Sunset Shimmer standing there smiling like an idiot. A stupid, dumb, gorgeous, wonderful idiot.
The orange mare wrapped her hooves around Twilight pulling her into a deep kiss. “Surprise!” she whispered softly. Suddenly the frazzled princess’s awful day didn’t seem so bad. (But they were still going to talk about human Twilight.)

Fluttershy stared longingly at Pinkie Pie, who was busy hosting the party. She was zipping around chattering with ponies, serving cupcakes, and handling the bar all at the same time. Of course, Fluttershy was busy too. Busy staring at Pinkie. Which was kind of creepy, she knew. At one point, Pinkie noticed Fluttershy’s eyes on her so, obviously, she went and asked her what was up. And of course, the shy Pegasus mare’s face went red and she muttered something about powdering her muzzle, before running away.
Now Pinkie Pie may be hyper and excitable and random but she was NOT stupid. Sure hosting this party was important, but at this moment, Fluttershy needed her. Something was bothering her friend and she needed to know what it was. In fact, Pinkie had noticed Fluttershy staring at her a lot these past few weeks. It was like she wanted to tell her something.
Fluttershy heard a knock on the bathroom door. She hesitated…. What if it was Pinkie Pie? No, it’s probably Rainbow Dash, who had left her to hang out with Big Macintosh a while ago. Of course she didn’t mind because she knew about Rainbow’s crush on him and thought it was brave of her to talk to him. More brave than she was. Fluttershy opened the door, and upon seeing a flash of pink, she quickly tried to close the door again. Pinkie was much stronger than some ponies gave her credit for and she easily entered the restroom.
“Sorry to bother you ‘Shy but you seemed a bit…off.” Pinkie chirped. Fluttershy blinked. Pinkie was also more perceptive than ponies gave her credit for. Or maybe she was just blindingly obvious.
Pinkie tilted her head to the side and blinked. “Well? What’s wrong?” Fluttershy really wanted to say it. To have the burden lifted from her chest, the secret out in the open. She wanted an answer from Pinkie.
“Pinkie, I…I’m actually not feeling very good.” Fluttershy felt a surge of anger at herself. She backed out—again. She really was a coward. “Is it okay if I go home? I’m sorry for leaving so soon, but I really need to go.”
Pinkie smiled. “No problemo! I’ll walk you!” Fluttershy opened her mouth to protest, but closed it at the last minute. Maybe it wasn’t so bad to have Pinkie as just a friend. She loved her all the same, but maybe the pain was worth it to see Pinkie smile.

Rarity was a hopeless fool. Some may protest, some may agree, but at this moment Rarity was an idiot. It was pointless to realize this now, mid-make out. After all they had been through, she kept running back to him. The stallion she had her hooves all over right at this moment.
Thunderlane didn’t know what he was doing. Sure she had flawless looks and a generous heart and a beautiful smile, but she was Rarity. The Rarity he had broken up with 5 months ago, the Rarity that broke his heart. He tried to convince himself that he had moved on, but as things were looking, he hadn’t.
He broke the kiss, panting and sweating a little. Rarity gave him a small smile, as if this didn’t hurt them both. As if this was perfectly normal. As if she didn’t leave him for her job.
Suddenly, Thunderlane pinned Rarity’s hooves above her head and kissed her softly. He let go and slowly walked away.
Rarity was a hopeless fool. She stopped him with a hoof. “How about a drink? You more than deserve one.”
Thunderlane stared at her as if she had grown a second horn. “Rarity… I—I would love a drink.”

Soarin looked around in wonder. The party was smaller than he was used to, but it was cute. He was their only for one reason: his marefriend, Applejack. Wherever she was…
“Howdy! Haven’t seen you ‘round this parts fer awhile!” an all too familiar southern accent called out.
Soarin turned around to see Applejack grinning widely. He smiled back, kissing her lightly on the nose. “Glad to see you too. I see I haven’t missed anything…”
Applejack frowned a little, “Only the first half of this here party! Where’ve you been? Soarin through the skies with yer fancy flyin’ team?” she snorted adorably. “I said your name.”
Soarin chuckled. “It’s all good Applejack. I’m here now.”
She smirked. “Ya sure are, pretty boy… C’mere you.” The cowpony pulled him close and kissed him. She felt his hooves around her neck, and let her tongue slip in.
The couple separated when they heard the sound of fireworks and whoops and holler coming from ponies around them. Applejack whispered, “Happy New Year!” in Soarin’s ear and they watched the scene above them.

“I swear I wasn’t Twilight! She’s not like you! You’re different.” Sunset cried.
Twilight narrowed her eyes. “Because I’m a princess?”
Sunset looked hurt. “After all we’ve been through, you still think I’m that shallow?”
Twilight’s gaze softened. “I’m sorry. I’m just mad I don’t get to spend that much time with you.” Sunset hugged her close. “You’ll always be with me…” Fireworks erupted as Sunset Shimmer went in for a kiss. The purple alicorn happily accepted.

“And then he fell-hic- down the hole!” Rainbow burst out laughing. Big Mac chuckled as Rainbow Dash regaled him with tales of her fillyhood. The cyan Pegasus struggled to compose herself and look serious.
“Okay. I have something important to tell you. Now I know you wouldn’t do that, but promise not to laugh. That would be so uncool.” Big Mac raised an eyebrow, but nodded. Rainbow was sweating and mumbling under her breath. Macintosh was a bit nervous… what was she up to?
“Big Macintosh…” she took a deep breath, still failing to calm herself. “IkindasortaloveyouandwastoonervoustotellyouallthistimeandApplejackwouldgetmadsinc—”
Her rant was cut off by a pair of soft red lips against hers. The kiss tasted like caramel apple and cinnamon, not unexpected from a stallion of the Apple family. Big Macintosh was actually kissing her!
As they parted, fireworks erupted behind the oak tree. Rainbow squealed in awe and Big Mac chuckled. “Oh Celestia these are awesome!” She turned to Big Mac, slipping her hoof around his neck and pulling him close to give him a sloppy kiss on the cheek. “Happy New Year, big guy…”

Rarity took a swig of her beer. Usually she would order something like wine, a better drink for refined tastes, but tonight she hardly cared what it tasted like as long as it was alcohol. Next to her sat a black pegasus stallion, who seemed to be enjoying the awkward silence as much as she was.
Back when they were in a relationship, Thunderlane always had something to talk about. Whether it was his job on the weather team, or his short time in the Wonderbolts Reserves, he loved to see Rarity smile.
Suddenly Rarity stood up and sighed. “I really should be off. The fireworks are starting soon….But, I’m glad we could do this.” For some reason, she had been disappointed. She didn’t know why she thought tonight was the night they would have some kind of heart-to-heart talk. When they broke up it was a silent goodbye. She hated silence.
Thunderlane was not going to let her walk away like that. “Rarity, wait. I’m sorry…”
Rarity’s ear twitched. What was he sorry about? She turned around and stared at him. He shifted uncomfortably under her gaze. “Me too.” She tried to smile.
Thunderlane seemed sad as he stood up. “I—I have to go.” I don’t know why I even bothered. He ran away as fireworks erupted above, lighting up the sky.

Fluttershy giggled at Pinkie’s silly antics. “Pinkie—haha- stop--heeehee—you’re going to choke!” she said to her pink friend who was seeing how many cupcakes she could fit in her mouth. That strange mare somehow had cupcakes ready on hoof, no matter what the occasion.
“Hmmppfff- prffttrflturf!” Pinkie said. She chomped down on the cupcakes in her mouth and swallowed them gracefully. “But it’s soooooo much fun!”
Fluttershy chuckled, taking out a hoofkerchief and cleaning the excess frosting off of Pinkie’s mouth. “Thanks a million Flutters!” the party pony cried cheerfully.
The shy mare hid behind her rose pink mane and mumbled, “I’ll always be there for you Pinkie Pie. Always.”
The babbling pink pony didn’t seem to hear her as she continued her previous conversation. “And then, that huge spider bit his head off! Pfft… serves him right!” she snickered.
Fluttershy nodded in half agreement, even though she wasn’t really listening.
Pinkie frowned. It wasn’t a good look for her, but she did it anyway. “Fluttershy? Fluttershy!”
The distracted Pegasus looked up. “Hmm?”
Pinkie’s frown deepened. “Something’s wrong and you refuse to tell me about it! I know I’m not a very good listener, but I’m your friend for pony’s sake! Can’t you just be honest with me?”
Fluttershy sighed. “Pinkie, I think I’ve fallen in love with someone.” She smiled a little. “Someone absolutely beautiful and wonderful and amazing. She is always smiling and she’s never sad. And I love her more than anything in the entire world…”
Pinkie Pie beamed. “Oh! In that case I’ll through a special party just for them! I bet we’ll be best of friends. I’m sosososososo glad you found your special somepony, ‘Shy.”
Fluttershy smiled and gently nuzzled her friend and opened the door to her house. “I am too.”
Fireworks erupted, lighting up the quiet night sky. The excited pink mare gasped, her eyes twinkling at the sight. “Wowee we can see them from here too! Flutters?” When Pinkie turned around to find her, she had disappeared into her cottage.
