The twinkling stars of the long winter night still hung over equestria's sky. Descending from the darkness, Princess Luna fluttered her graceful wings as she landed on Canterlot Palace's balcony. As she took a deep breath, she let out a long sigh and wiped the sweat from her brow. The night had been rough enough already, but now she needed to take care of an extra task on behalf of her sister. As the sound of Princess Celestia snoring softly in her bed echoed throughout the sleeping chambers, a gentle smile developed on Luna's face as she cast her eyes back up to the gleaming heavens above.
Once per year, on the exact day of Celestia's birth, the princess of solace had a day off to herself. Focusing her magic, Luna concentrated hard on the rim of the horizon. Sweat dropped from her forehead as the princess of the night focused all of her power to raise the sun, just as Celestia would have done on any other day. After several moments of having no success, Luna spotted a bright red button sticking out like a sore thumb on the balcony floor. If there was one thing the princess of the night had never been able to resist, it was big red buttons.
“Ooooh, what does this button do?” Luna enquired softly. Jumping on the button as a cat would jump on a mouse tail, the moon dropped like a stone from out of the sky, replaced by the sun that practically sprang up to the exact position where the moon had been.
Why am I not surprised Celestia had something like this up her sleeve? Luna thought to herself, feeling now ever more foolish that she had even thought her sister was worthy of throne usurping thousands of years ago.
By the time Celestia awoke, the morning daylight had already reached its peak. Kicking off her covers, the royal white alicorn ignored her crown and golden shoes, choosing instead to go without any clothing that would signify her royal status. As Celestia walked out onto the balcony, a sudden explosion of confetti completely covered her face.
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” Pinkie Pie yelled at the top of her lungs. Startled, Celestia's horn erupted into a flash of bright yellow magic. Before either pony knew what was happening, they both appeared together on the dark side of the moon.
“Oh my, Celestia,” Pinkie squealed with delight, “Are we having a moon party? I love moon parties!”
“Erm, why yes, that's exactly what I had in mind,” Celestia replied, shifting her eyes from side to side. “In fact, you are in charge of setting everything up. You just wait here while I send out more invitations.”
“Yay!” The pink party pony cheered, bouncing on the spot.
Spreading out her wings, Celestia leaped off from the ground, flying higher and higher. Within seconds, the white Alicorn had left the orbit of the moon, heading back towards earth. As she approached the beautiful shining gem that was her planet, she couldn't help but admire the amazing landmass that was her kingdom.
But it wasn't beautiful enough. The Princess of the sun figured that this pale blue dot could use a personal touch. Summoning the inherent magic within her, Celestia called forth the star that she commanded, shooting a beam of pure light at the ground, carving out a message that only she could see.
The crater stretched all the way from Yakyakistan to the kingdom of Griffonstone, upon completion spelling out a message that Celestia had always wanted to scribble somewhere. “Trollestia was here, Luna is a loser,” The white alicorn read aloud, continuing her hysterical laughter at both the level of her own power, but also at the gullibility of her sister that she thought anypony else could raise the sun without the help of a big red button.
Celestia began to wonder how many other suns she could control at one time. Channelling more and more magic through her horn, the grand princess strung together entire solar systems together with barely a hint of effort.
It was then that Celestia woke up once more in her bed.
“Greetings sister, did you sleep well?” Luna asked with a broad grin on her face.
“Yes, I did actually,” Clestia yawned. “Thank you for helping me get the best night's sleep I've ever had!”
“Anything for my best sister's birthday,” Luna winked, ignoring the obvious disappointment at everything she had just been through being all a dream.
“Hello? Anypony there?” Pinkie called out to the empty landscape. “The party is supposed to start soon. Where are you all hiding?”
“Oh! I'm here! I'm in space! Yeah, going to space,” a white round object with a single eye in the centre replied, floating next to the puffy haired earth pony. Indeed, it was all just a dream. Or was it?
