I am not in a good mood at all! All positivity that was once in my body has long since left. Well, more like about 2 hours ago. Pssh, like I’m going to start the flashback like that! I’m going to start by saying some information about myself. I always start like that.
My name is Nathaniel, 15 years old, but my friends just call me Nate. Personally, I don’t like the name “Nate”, but they call me that for short. Heck, they sometimes even call me Rate, or anything else that rhymes! At least my family respects me. They call me Nathan, which I like better than Nate. Not too long; not too short. But right now, I don’t really care much about that, because now, I am scared for my life as I know it.
So, don’t call me crazy for saying this, but my friends, family, and I have a somewhat different religion than others. I guess it’s safe to say that I am neither Christian, Jewish, nor Muslim. But rather, our religion, as crazy as it sounds, revolves around…a Magic 8 ball.
Again, don’t call me, or any of my friends or family crazy for this. Despite how bizarre the thought of it is, it actually works out quite well for us. So, I guess you could say that it decides our fates. Yes, it sounds crazy, but some pretty good stuff has happened to us because of this.
For one, I wouldn’t have met my friends without it. It works just like it suggests, just with a twist. We ask it a question, like normal. It either gives us yes or no, and whatever it says goes. Like, if you asked it if you should drink ketchup for the rest of your life, and it said yes, then oh well. You’re drinking ketchup for the rest of your life. And if you couldn’t tell, I referenced iCarly there. I’m sure that Sans (you know who I mean) wouldn’t have a problem with that, though.
And just a little detail that I feel like I should mention to you: I already told you about my family and friends, right? Well, guess what? They watch My Little Pony. And you know what else? They watch it, and they like it! They watch a show intended for little girls, despite their age and gender. I don’t see what’s so good about the show. I mean, it’s full of ponies! It’s full of other girly, mushy, lovey-dovey crap that I don’t care about! How do they do it?!
I have 3 friends. Well, I have more, but those 3 are my best friends. 2 of which are guys, and the other is a girl. My girl. I’m trying to tie the knot with her, and hopefully be able to make it official here pretty soon. The three of us are sophomores, and 15 years of age. We’re straight A students. There’s Mike, and John; the bronies. Then, there’s Brooke. I can see her liking the show, but Mike and John? I thought they were better than that!
I have one older brother, Daniel, 17 years, and one younger sister, Hillary, 12 years. Yes, they both like the show, and so does my mom, Mary. My dad is in the military, so I’m sure he doesn’t like it, either. I’m also sure that if he suddenly came home to see everyone watching it, he’d be freaking out, especially since Daniel would also be watching it, most likely.
So, like I said earlier, I am scared for my life as I know it. Today is Thursday, and this happened Tuesday, I believe. I was hanging out with my friends, and Mike bet that I couldn’t slide down a railing on my bum, and, of course, I took him on. Go figure, he was right. I ended up falling off the right side of the railing, and I face planted into the concrete ground. It hurt like hell, I can tell you that. The loser had to ask the Magic 8 ball a question of the winner’s choosing. So, I think you can kinda guess where things are going from here.
“Ask it if…” Mike said, thinking about a good question. “Ask it if it’s likely that you will turn into a pony by weeks end!”
John and Brooke looked at him like “What kind of a question is that?” and I looked at him like “Please don’t make me ask THAT…”
Mike looks at the two. “What? I couldn’t think of anything!” He says, laughing a little.
“Still, that’s a bit bizarre.” John said.
Mike pulls out his phone, and I think he started texting John and Brooke so that I wouldn’t hear him talk. I’m pretty sure he told them “It’s not like it’s really going to happen.”
Hesitating, I held up the Magic 8 ball. “Is….I-Is it likely that I will turn into a pony by weeks end?” I say, putting emphasis on “pony”. I shake the Magic 8 ball, and wait for its mystical answer to my ridiculous question. I saw the message “Ask again later”, but only barely, but then it flipped over to the official answer, and my eyes grew big.
It said “It is certain.”
So, now you know why I’m so nervous about things right now. I’ll bet that, right now, you must be thinking “Oh, get real! You can’t turn into a pony; that’s impossible!” Think again. If only you knew what it was like to live like this. Just you wait…
[Thursday, 2:00 PM]
It’s a half-day today, so we get out at 2 PM instead of 4 PM. The 4 of us ride the same bus home, but we had to wait on Mike, who was trying to get the dollar bill in the vending machine, so that he could get a Reese’s bar. The machine kept rejecting his dollar. I love it when that happens to him; he always overreacts about it, but right now isn’t a good time. I put in 4 quarters of my own, and take his dollar as payment. “Thanks, but I had that.” He said.
“No…you didn’t…” I replied back. I heard the others laughing at how I said that.
“Hurry up and get your candy. The bus leaves in 7 minutes.” I tell him, walking back over to the others, who were waiting by the door leading outside. I stop next to Brooke, and she notices the look in my eyes. The look of distraught terror. She puts her hand on my shoulder, trying to calm me. “Hey, don’t worry about it. We all know it’s not possible. You don’t have to stress over it. And besides, even if it does happen, which it won’t, that wouldn’t change our relationship status, if that’s what you’re worried about.”
“Alright…thanks.” I say, slightly calmer than before. Then, I notice that my hair looked off when I looked at my faint reflection on the window. “Hang on, I’m gonna go fix my hair real quick.” I tell them. “Oh, come on, dude!” John shouts at me, and Brooke just laughs. “Alright, then. Hurry back.”
On my way to the restrooms, my ears felt a bit tingly, but I ignored it. I made my way in, and I thought I’d “use it” first, if you know what I mean. So, while I did my business, I could have sworn I felt something move in my hair. I just simply shook my head, trying to shake it out. When I did, I didn’t feel anything moving anymore, but everything did seem a bit louder for some reason. Did my ears pop?
Once I finished, I make my way over to the sinks. There were mirrors right above them. I washed my hands, and kept them wet so I could adjust my hair, but when I looked up at the mirror to do so, I think my heart stopped for a moment.
What I saw matched up perfectly with what I had asked the Magic 8 Ball. In place of my two normal human ears, I saw two light green, furry pony ears, but instead on the top of my head. I reached my hand up to one of them, and I felt it twitch. I felt it twitch with my hand, but I also felt a new sensation on the top of my head. I tap the other ear, and I feel something new. It also twitched. I try moving one of them, and it obeyed, and it turned to the right, and back.
I then got a headache, and my eyelids grew heavy. I stumbled backwards, and put my hood on to very barely protect my head from what I thought was going to happen. I then feel a vibration of what felt like a very quick earthquake, and the back of my head suddenly hurt a lot. I don’t remember anything after that.
[End of Chapter One]
