Chapter 1- Down a Mountain
The only light in the room was the sunlight pouring through the hole in the top. The youngest of the three fillies awoke with a start. She scanned the room, trying to remember where and why she was there.
The first memories that came back to her were of her sister, a white unicorn with a gorgeous mane. Vanity? No, Rarity, that was it. She looked around, was her sister here? She doubted it. Even she wasn’t sure where she was. Wait. Who was she? She couldn’t quite remember. She sat in silence for while pondering this and then, all of a sudden, she remembered it all.
She was called Sweetie Belle. She had been climbing with her friends when Scootaloo... Wait. Where was Scoots. Had she fallen down? And what had happened to Bloom? She quickly voiced her worries.
“Scootaloo! Apple Bloom! Are you here? Are you okay?”
“Sweetie? Over here!” a voice replied from the darkness. She followed the sound of the voice, it was oddly familiar.
“Sweetie! Thank goodness you’re alright!” a yellow filly hugged her.
“Apple Bloom? Is that you? Where’s Scootaloo? Is she alright? Are you alright?”
“I’m mighty fine, thanks Sweetie, those yellow flowers cushioned mah fall. Although the exact same can’t be said for Scoot…”
“Is she okay? What happened to her? Is she hurt? Good you’re not hurt but what happened to Scootaloo! If she’s dead it’s all my fault! I talked you guys into going up this darn hill!”
“She’s not dead! Just unconscious, she fell first and tried to fly. It made her head miss the flowers. She didn’t fall from that high though as her, um, attempt at flight helped her glide a bit. She should be fine.”
“where is she?”
“in the other room. And Sweetie?”
“Yes, Bloom?”
“Stop fretting.”
She couldn’t help it. They could have been seriously hurt and it would have been her fault. She blushed and the two fillies walked onward into the other room.
As they approached a patch of grass, sunlight shining on it and darkening the rest of the room, a flower, no different from the ones they had fallen onto but much bigger, popped out of the earth. It, however, seemed to have a face. It looked around and then, spotting the two fillies, said in a soft voice “Howdy! I’m Flowey! Flowey the Flower!”
“real original” Apple Bloom muttered under her breath. Sweetie barely stifled a giggle.
“You two are new to the underground aren’t cha? Golly, the both of you must be so confused! Someone should really teach you how things work around here! I guess little old me would have to do!” Suddenly little hearts appeared in front of them. The one in front of her was pink and the other in front of her friend was red. They glowed slightly, illuminating the suddenly dark room. While she was looking around she spotted a faint glowing from the corner of the room. Was that Scootaloo?
“See those hearts? They are you’re souls. The very culmination of your being!”
“Cul- Culmin-“ Apple Bloom tried to repeat the word.
“Essence of your being?”
“Essence?”
“Look, that red one is your soul. The other one, the pink one, is you friend’s one. You can move them around if you think it!”
“Oh, why didn’t you say so?” Apple Bloom nodded her head.
Flowey gave out an exasperated groan and continued. “Your soul starts off weak but can grow stronger if you get a lot of LV! What does LV stand for? Why L-“
“Levels! Like in Video Games” Sweetie shouted out, interrupting the flower once more.
“No, it stands for LOVE of course!”
“Levels!”
“LOVE! I think I would know, Don’t you?”
“Yeah, sorry”
“As I was saying, you two want LOVE, don’t cha?” Flowey winked “don’t worry I share some with ya!” He continued, not giving the fillies a chance to answer his question. “Down here LOVE is shared with little white ‘friendliness pellets’. Move around and grab as many as you can!”
A group of pellets went towards them, she did as he said and thought for the pink heart to move forwards, towards them. The red heart did the same. The pellets were inches away when somepony shouted and a purple blur went in front of her and her friend.
She recognised the colour, it was the same as the colour of Scootaloo’s mane. There was a scream of pain behind Flowey and the girls ran forward towards it. It happened so she had been right, it was Scoots. Apple Bloom rushed forwards as Sweetie spun round to ask their new friend for help. The sight of Flowey’s demonic face made any request or plea to falter.
“You IDIOTS! In this world it’s kill or be killed! Who would ever pass up an opportunity like this?!” He laughed. The laugh sent shivers down her spine. She did the only logical thing. Something her sister had told her over and over. She screamed. The pitch of the scream broke Flowey’s concentration, he winced in pain and disappeared under the earth. Leaving the crusaders alone in the dark.
The three fillies hugged together, Scootaloo wincing in pain. She couldn’t move. The pain was unbearable. Sweetie could feel tears in her eyes. This was all her fault. She didn’t deserve a friend like this. Someone who would jump to any feat for they’re safety. It warmed her crushed spirit. They sat in silence for a while.
A sound echoed through the room. At first she didn’t even register it. Then, when Apple Bloom had looked up and shaken her, she started to hear it too. It was getting louder. It sounded like footsteps. The two of them moved, their bodies now covering the injured Scootaloo. All of a sudden a goat looking monster appeared. She screamed again, having seen the method work once before in scaring them away.
The goat covered it’s ears. “My child, I will do you no harm. I am Toriel, Caretaker of the ruins. I pass by to check if any pony has fallen down here into the underground.”
Sweetie stopped screaming and tilted her head to the side. This was similar to what Flowey had been doing and yet she felt that she was safe.
“Are any of you hurt?” Apple Bloom and Sweetie looked at each other and quickly moved aside, letting Toriel see Scootaloo.
“Oh dear, you poor thing. Worry not my child, I will heal you.” She bent over and touched her head. A second passed and Scootaloo got up on her hooves. “There all better now.”
“ah you alright, Scoots?” Apple Bloom questioned as they hugged Scootaloo. The orange mare nodded. Knowing they were safe. It filled her with HOPE.
