Star Crossed
To Love A Mare
Load Full StoryTwilight Sparkle woke up with a flash. Today was Hearths Warming Eve, one of her favorite days of the year, she wasn't going to just simply sleep in, she had to savor every bit of the day. Especially today, she was going to ask out Rainbow Dash, a mare that she not only was friends with, but looked up to. She couldn't explain her crush on Rainbow, When she was younger she had always thought of marrying a handsome stallion. One that would love and care for her like a husband should, but instead of a stallion, she had feelings Rainbow. A mare. She enjoyed everything about Rainbow, her mane, her cute smile, her laugh, and especially her eyes.
Twilight got out of bed, and left the castle. As soon as her form left the castle, she was greeted with an extreme cold and snow that was at least 2 feet high. She was sure the weather ponies would have told them about this beforehand, but she didn't let it bother her, she had more important matters to attend to.
‘I probably should've put on a jacket…’ Twilight thought as she trotted through Ponyville, the cold was starting to become unbearable. Rainbow returned to her head. The thought of snuggling up next to that mare was almost enough to warm her. Her mind went from fantasy to fantasy. Sleeping next to Rainbow with their bodies pressed together, their lips pressed up against each other, all of these and more seemed to go through Twilight's head as she walked through the small town.
Suddenly remembering that she had wings, Twilight took flight and headed for Sugarcube Corner. Twilight walked through the doors and was immediately greeted by a more hyperactive than usual Pinkie Pie. “TWILIGHT!!” Pinkie screamed as the purple alicorn walked away from the doors.
“Hey Pinkie! How are you doing? Well, other than being cold of course.” Twilight chuckled.
“I'm doing great! Business is kind of slow, but what can you expect when there is so much snow, that it's coming in through the door?!” The pink earth pony answered. Twilight nodded her head in agreement, as she remembered what she came here for.
“Hey Pinkie, can you cook up maybe… A dozen haycakes for me? It's kind of an occasion…” Twilight trailed off.
“Sure Twi! What's the occasion?” For whatever reason, that question caught Twilight by surprise.
“It's for Ra-I mean I'm-They're for a very special pony!” Twilight practically screamed those last few words. “For bucks sake” Twilight muttered under her breath. Pinkie Pie dismissed her friends language and outburst. Although it was uncommon of her to swear, it however wasn't unusual for her to use non-filly appropriate words when she was stressed, or tired from studying all night.
Twilight waited for what seemed like hours, in reality it was only 5 minutes. “Here you go!” Pinkie yelled
“Thanks Pinkie!” Twilight yelled as she ran out into the cold.
Twilight had planned this day perfectly. She would wake up at 8 A.M (which she had done), go to Sugarcube Corner to get haycakes at 9 (which she had also done), then have some time to herself from whenever she got home, till 3 P.M. She would find an excuse to talk to Rainbow then at 6 she would go over to Rainbow’s cloud house and confess her love to her. ‘Ok.. what do I do now?’ Twilight thought to herself. It was way too cold for her to go outside, and the castle was in a way “boring.” Although Spike was there, he had not woken up yet, and she did NOT want to wake up a sleeping dragon. Memories of her mane on fire danced in her head as she walked over to her room and laid on her bed. Twilight sighed as she realized how big of a day this was. If Rainbow accepted her love, Twilight would be the happiest mare in the world. The thought of being with that mare made Twilight’s heart race. However, if Rainbow didn't, who knows what would happen with their friendship. Would Rainbow be mad at her? Would she think badly about Twilight and they drift apart? All these possible conclusions went through her head. ‘I cannot mess this up’
Although the castle was warm, Twilight was freezing. The thought of rejection gave her a cold feeling that spread through the rest of her body. Twilight felt the need to cry as she realized she only had one shot at appealing to the Pegasus she loved so dearly.
Meanwhile, Rainbow Dash was only just beginning to wake up. Rainbow groaned and tried to go back to sleep, but to no prevail she got out of bed. Dash walked through the halls and down the stairs of her cloud mansion, and right to her kitchen. She looked at her clock that rested upon her counter. It read 1:28 P.M. ‘How did I manage to sleep this late?’ The pegasus thought as she got herself some cereal. The reality of what day it was hit her as she was about to take the first bite. It was Hearths Warming Eve. Dash’s mouth went from a smile to a frown. ‘Another one alone…’ Ever since she moved into Ponyville she spent every Hearths Warming alone. No special some pony, no family, and no pet. Tank was long into hibernation and Rainbow’s dad was off in Fillydelphia. Rainbow’s mother died, when Rainbow was only 3 years old, from a disease. She had no one. Dash’s mind went to the one pony that she has longed to be with. Twilight Sparkle. She knew that her family would never approve of her crush on Twilight. She was raised to believe that she had to marry a mighty and proud stallion so she could continue her legacy, however the thought of being with Twilight made Dash feel fuzzy on the inside. A year ago, she planned on asking Twilight out, but Tirek’s attack on Equestria took up her time. After this she had to constantly deal with the map and its callings. This took up all of her time, and only just recently she actually had time to settle down and enjoy life.
After Rainbow Dash finished eating up her cereal, she went and layed down on her couch. From the corner of her eye she found the picture that they first sent Princess Celestia years ago. Her eyes fastened on Twilight. Dash’s eyes softened as she inspected every bit of Twilight. Her eyes, her body, and of all things she loved upon Twilight, her favorite was her mane. She found Twilight’s mane so...attracting. The thought of resting upon it as they slept made the feeling return to Dash. She suddenly had a burst of confidence. Today was the day. She was going to ask out Twilight. Somehow, someway, she was going to.
It was 10 minutes till 6 P.M. Twilight felt butterflies in her stomach as she flew towards the floating house in the sky. ‘Being early won't hurt...right? It's ok Twilight. Calm yourself. You can do it… I hope…’ The lavender alicorn thought to herself. She landed on Rainbow’s porch. Twilight took a deep breath… and knocked on the door.
The knocking took Rainbow by surprise. She steadily walked towards the door, and opened it. Rainbow’s heart skipped a beat when she saw Twilight. “Hey Twi!” Rainbow said surprised.
“Hey Rainbow! Hey, I was wondering if you would like to share these haycakes?” Asked Twilight, showing her friend the tray full of haycakes.
“Oh, um sure! Umm, come in!” Rainbow Dash took the tray from Twilight’s hooves, and made a motion signaling Twilight to come in. The two sat down on Rainbow’s couch. Twilight took off the cover for the tray with her magic, and levitated 2 different cakes to both Rainbow and herself.
“Sooo, how's your Hearths Warming Eve going?” The princess asked, determined to create some conversation. Rainbow’s eyes saddened remembering that she was alone again. “Oh… Same as usual… Ya’know…”
“Rainbow.. Are you ok?” Twilight suddenly worried for her friend.
“Yea… I'm fine…” The pegasus said sadly “Hey… While you're here… Want to watch a movie or something?” Rainbow asked.
“Yeah!” Twilight practically screamed that. However, the pegasus didn't notice it and went to turn on the tv, and to put a movie into her disc player.
Rainbow specifically picked the movie “Hooves Held Together” for the occasion. Her plan was clear, right as the theme of the movie turned romantic, she would ask out Twilight. Simple as that. However, Twilight would be the one to make the first move.
“Hey… Rainbow…” Twilight whispered
“Hmm?” Rainbow answered
“I… Rainbow I- I like you… And not just as friends… I've put this off for so long, it's killing me. Rainbow, would you go out with me?” Twilight looked into the eyes of the cyan pegasus. Longing for an answer.
Rainbow just stared at her in shock. Their eyes met. Twilight’s eyes teared up., “I'm… I'm sorry Rainbow-” Just as she finished that last word, Rainbow’s lips met with Twilight’s. Twilight just sat there for a second, trying to take in what had just happened, before finally returning the kiss. The two sat there in complete bliss for several minutes. Rainbow was the one who broke away.
“You felt the same? Twilight… I was going to ask you the same thing!” Twilight’s only response was a hug. A hug more heartfelt than any other time she had hugged Rainbow. Rainbow nuzzled Twilight before kissing her again. This time, lasting for much longer. Still kissing, they laid down on the couch before finally breaking away. “Hey… Twilight… How would you like to spend the night with me?” The pegasus cooed, just barely whispering the words into the princess’s ear. “More than anything” the alicorn responded, before going in for a kiss.
They both fell asleep next to each other, hooves wrapped around their marefriend, breathing in complete harmony.
