Shortly after his eighteenth birthday, Spike receives a summons from Lord Torch to compete in the Gauntlet of Fire. When he finally arrives in his ancestral homeland, Spike realizes just how little he knows about his own people.

A week after his eighteenth birthday, Spike receives a mystical summons from Lord Torch, ruler of the Wyvertii. After speaking with Princess Celestia and Luna about this life-threatening compulsion, they convince him to travel to his ancestral homeland so that he may learn more about Wyvertii culture, their customs, and to ultimately spare his own life. Unfortunately for Spike, the summons requires him to journey to the highly secluded Valley of Wyver all by his lonesome. When he finally arrives, the young man discovers just how little he knows about his own people.
