In a warehouse on the outside of town, a pale skinned young man sat hard at work. His messy brown hair that just an inch below his jaw, and his blue-green eyes focused intently on his work. He was wearing rubber gloves, rubber sole boots, jeans, and a white T-shirt. He was elbows deep in a large metal box, pinching two wires together. He held the wires together with his left index finger and thumb, while he used his other hand to grab a roll of electrical tape. Using his mouth, he started unraveling the tape. Once a small lip of tape was unraveled, he started wrapping it around the pinched wires. He got a few centimeters of tape around the connection, and cut the tape. Once everything had been secured, the young man smiled and closed the metal box. He took a screwdriver and began to seal the box shut.
"There." He said. He stood up and dusted himself off. "The generator is done. Now let's turn this baby over." He picked up two jumper cables laying on the floor, and gently opened their teeth. "Here goes nothing." He connected the two ends together and another large box began to hum.
"That sounds like a good thing. Well... Better then Boom anyway." He dropped the connected jumper cables and approached the second of two large metal boxes. He flipped a few levers, making the humming increase in volume. There was a pause as he went to pull the last, like he was a bit hesitant to flip it. "Please don't go boom. Please, please don't go boom." He said. He clamped his eyes shut and threw the switch. Suddenly, the humming subsided, and there was a large flash of blue light. The young man put his hands over his ears, expecting a loud bang to ring out. But when no such bang came, he slowly opened one eye. Noticing the blue hue the room now had, he removed his hands from his ears and opened his eyes.
He looked around for the source of the blue glow. His eyes grew wide when he noticed a floating, two dimensional, blue oval in the middle of the room. A smile crept across his face, and he began chuckling. "It worked! Nick my dear boy, you've done it!" He chuckled. "Now I just need... to... Test it... Oh boy." He said. "Well, I guess the only thing to do is to jump on in. I hope I don't get disintegrated though." He said, backing up to get a running start. "Man I feel like Marty McFly right now." He mumbled. He broke into a full sprint and ran through the oval. On the other side, he found he was in a forest. He looked around at the forest around him, examining everything, until he heard a low booming sound. Suddenly, he heard a loud, majestic call as a massive shadow passed over him. He smiled when he saw the source of the shadow.
"Wicked." Nick said.
Sunset sat at her locker, preparing to go home for the day. She looked to the locker next to her, and found a very happy looking Nick. He hurriedly put things in his bag, with a massive grin on his face. Sunset took noticed this immediately, and chuckled to herself.
"You seem excited." She said, trying to strike up a conversation with her neighbor. Nick looked over at her and began giggling.
"Because today, my dear, I'm proud to say that I have invented something. I tested it this morning, and it works." Nick said energetically. Sunset laughed.
"My dear? When did you start being so polite?" Sunset asked. Nick chuckled.
"I do it when I'm excited. Sometimes I even quote Edgar Allan Poe." Nick said, Throwing his bag over his shoulder.
"Well, what is it you invented?" Sunset asked, putting her hands on her hips. Nick's smile grew wider, if that's even possible.
"I can't tell you what it is here, because someone might try to steal my work." He said. Sunset seemed to be a bit disappointed that she wouldn't get to find out what it was. This is what got him. "But I can show you." He said, starting to walk toward the doors. Sunset followed.
"Really? You'll show me?" Sunset asked excitedly.
"Yes. But you can't tell anyone about it. Alright?" Nick said. Sunset nodded. "Okay. Ready to go then?"
"Lead the way!" She said, following him to the doors. As she was walking out the doors, Someone called her name.
"Hey, Sunset!" She turned around, to she her friends Smiling and waving at her. The girls approached her with smiles on their faces, and stopped before her.
"Hey Sunset, we're going to the movies. You wanna come?" Pinkie pie asked. Sunset smiled and took a glance at Nick, but he wasn't smiling. He was clearly excited about sharing his discovery, but now he seemed like he was slightly saddened by these new plans that had been brought up. Sunset smiled at her friends.
"Sorry girls, I already have plans. Nick here was going to show me something." Sunset said. Applejack Raised an eyebrow and folded her arms.
"What exactly are you showing her, darling?" Rarity asked. Nick's smile came back a bit and he stood up straight.
"It's some research I've been doing. I've made a recent, and interesting discovery and i'd like to share it with someone I can trust." Nick said. everyone seemed to understand his answer, since Sunset herself was into science.
"Well, we'll leave ya to it then. Come on girls, we best not hold them up any longer." Applejack said. The group nodded and waved to Sunset.
"We'll cya later Sunset." Rainbow Dash said. Sunset waved back, sighed and turned back to Nick.
"Well, let's get moving." Sunset said. Nick chuckled and walked with her down the block.
"I thought you were going to ditch me for a second there." Nick said. Sunset gave him a soft look and a smile.
"I'm not the kind of person to ditch people. Once I set out to do something with someone, I won't blow them off to hang out with someone else." Sunset said.
"Well, let's get a move on!" Nick said.
Nick opened the door to the small warehouse. The door squeaked as it rolled sideways along its tracks. Nick reached for the light switch, which was positioned on the wall next to the door frame. The switch made a loud click that echoed through the building as the lights came on. He stepped inside and motioned for Sunset to follow. She walked into the room and looked around, while Nick threw his bag in the corner. Sunset saw the two big metal boxes in the the middle of the room, and put her bag down with Nick's. Nick closed the Warehouse door and walked over to the machine. The machine had three parts, two large boxes and a large ring standing on its side.
"What is it?" Sunset asked. Nick smiled.
"Well, the plain looking box is what I call a kinetic energy generator. You see, the planet and its insides are always in movement. So they have a lot of kinetic energy, and this machine absorbs it and turns it into massive amounts of electricity. Hence the name "Kinetic energy generator". And the ring is to stabilize current flow and create something." Nick said. Sunset nodded and raised an eyebrow.
"Then what's the other machine." She asked. Nick punched something in on a keyboard and grasped a lever on the not so plain looking box.
"That's what I'm going to show you. So stand back." Nick said with a smile. He threw the switch and energy surged through the ring, and a blue flash of light show from its center. Sunset closed her eyes for a moment, trying to get her eyes to readjust after being blinded. She blinded a few times, and she froze at what she saw. Something had appeared inside of the ring. It was blue, and it appeared to be rippling like some sort of liquid. It filled the entire ring, and had a similar sound to lightly sloshing water.
"The ring is a recent addition to the setup. I had the other two machines done about two weeks ago." Nick said. Sunset just sat there with her mouth a gape.
"What is that... stuff?" Sunset asked. Nick gave her a curious look and glanced at the ring.
"Oh, that's a portal. But it's a very special portal." Nick said. Sunset looked him in the eyes.
"Special how?" She asked. Nick smiled yet again and extended a hand to her.
"I'll show you." He said. Sunset reluctantly took his hand, and as soon as she did, he took her to the portal. He stopped in front of it and turned to her, the smile still plastered on his face. "You ready?" He asked. She nodded meekly. "Then let's go." He said. They both stepped through the portal at the same time, still holding hands and all. On the other side, Sunset was greeted by the smell of fresh air. It was dawn and they were standing in a conifer forest. Sunset looked around at her surroundings, and raised an eyebrow.
"What's so special about a forest? I mean, don't get me wrong, it's beautiful. But, what makes in any different from any other forest?" Sunset asked. Nick took her hand again, and began dragging her up a hill.
"It's just over his hill. There's a massive clearing, and then you'll see it!" Nick said. Sunset looked a bit worried at that moment.
"See what?!" She asked, trying to speak over the crunching of leaves. Nick just kept smiling.
"You'll see!" Nick said. Sunset rolled her eyes. Nick stopped at the top of the hill, and there was a large, empty clearing like he'd said. "Alright, now we just need to wait fifteen seconds." Nick said. Sunset raised an eyebrow when she heard a series of loud booming noises.
"What's that sound?" Sunset asked. Nick chuckled.
"You'll see in 5... 4... 3... 2... 1..." He then pointed to a passageway in the clearing, and something big came walking out. It had a long neck that sat parallel to the ground, a massive body, elephant like legs, and a long whip like tail. It let out a call that sounded like a loud frequency horn as in sauntered its way across the clearing. The morning sun cast it's shadow across the clearing, stopping right on Nick and Sunset. Sunset sat with her mouth agape, clearly awestruck by the creature's presence.
"What is it?" She asked. Nick smiled and put his hands together.
"It's a dinosaur." He said excitedly. "A Diplodocus to be exact, and i'd estimate that one to be about sixty feet long." Sunset grabbed nick by the shoulders and looked him in the eyes.
"How is this possible?" She asked. Nick chuckled.
"The machine created a time portal. Basically what the machine does, is it creates a copy of the past in our galaxy and projects a portal to enter it. This prevents us from actually altering the time stream, causing any real damage to our time." Nick said. Sunset smiled and laughed.
"This is incredible! We can literally explore history!" Sunset said. Nick nodded his head.
"Well, would you like to take a safari through the Jurassic period?" Nick asked. Sunset looked at him with an excited expression.
"Really? We can do that?" Sunset asked. Nick nodded.
"Hell yeah. We just need to head back and get some things. We may be here a couple days." Nick said. Sunset's smile fell a bit.
"Couple days?" She asked. Nick shook his head.
"No no no no, I mean a couple days in here. Back home it will be like nothing happened while we were gone." Nick said. Sunset sighed.
"Then let's do it!" She said. Nick laughed.
"That's the spirit! But I will warn you, there won't be many opportunities to shower here. There is a small lake near here, but I don't know what it has in it." Nick said. "Well, let's head back and pack some stuff!" Nick chuckled. Sunset smiled.
"Lead the way Time boy." Sunset said.
