Sorrows of the Night
Sorrows of the Night
Load Full StoryLuna stared sadly down at the city before her of Canterlot. There wasn't a single movement in sight. The moon was full, with a shimmering, starry sky that dazzled. Why was Luna the only pony to love this night? She sighed and took flight, high above Canterlot as she looked at the sky. Did anyone care about her night anymore? Luna landed and trotted around the streets of the peaceful city.
"If only others were to love the night as much as I do," murmured Luna to herself. Then, she heard sobbing from inside a building. She walked up to it, a sign saying Canterlot Orphanage. Luna peered in through the window to see a few fillies surrounding one small filly, sobbing. Luna watched sadly as the others had a mean look on their faces, obviously saying things to upset her. Luna felt a stab of sympathy and anger.
"Ha! At least our parents didn't actually abandon us!" cried a fully unicorn.
"And why are your eyes so strange and ugly?" asked another. Snowdrop was just a blind Pegasus, whose parents ha dropped her off there after they learned of her blindness.
"And why are you picking on such a kind filly?" boomed a voice. The fillies looked around, frightened. Luna approached them.
"Oh, it's that weird Princess of the Night," said one of the fillies, bored. Luna felt a flash of anger once again.
"HOW DARE THEE SPEAK OF THOU PRINCESS LIKE THAT?" Luna raised her hoof, as to going to strike the small filly. The unicorn flinched, crying. Luna has never despised youth before, but now she saw how arrogant the children have become. "LEAVE THIS YOUNG MARE ALONE!" Luna left, and the fillies did leave her alone, as the fear of the princess forced them to.
Luna felt like sobbing. So, ponies chose to disrespect the one Princess who brought them beautiful nights? Luna wished she could get some more respect as even Celestia gained more respect than her. Discord had even respected and loved Celestia; although he is married to Fluttershy now. Luna took flight once again and flew toward her beloved celestial object. Once too high to breathe properly, Luna stopped and stared at the shining orb. The moon was really a beautiful object. Too bad it couldn't be full tomorrow. She had to start going through the phases to hide the moon.
"Oh, nights like these need to be recognized," said an all too familiar voice. "Too bad those foolish ponies do not appreciate these like I do." Luna growled.
"Nightmare, show yourself!" Luna yelled. The one thing that threatened her was back, and soon smoke started brewing around her. In front of her materialized Nightmare Moon, who cackled evilly. She had come back to take Equestria into Eternal Night, once again.
"Luna, how nice to see you again," smirked Nightmare Moon. Luna narrowed her eyes.
"I can't say the same about you," seethed Luna,"Just leave. I'm not going to return to being the feared Nightmare Moon everybody hated so much." Luna couldn't believe after all this time, this creature still believed that it would win Luna and they would have eternal night in Equestria.
"But you AREN'T Nightmare Moon," replied the creature. "I am, and I only need to possess you to do the job. I can give you power, and ponies will love the night as the sun will never show on Equestria again!" Luna paled at this.
"Never, foul beast!" screeched Luna, as a beam came from her horn to rid of the creature. Alas, it didn't work, as the thing teleported away.
"Terrible mistake," it said. Nightmare Moon threw herself into Luna. She screamed for help, but it was useless. They were so high up that nopony would be able to hear her. Luna then felt a sudden rage. Her subjects are in danger because of this vile creature, and she wasn't just some useless toy to be tossed around!
"I AM NOT SCARED OF YOU," bellowed Luna,"YOU ARE ONLY AN ILLUSION CREATED BY MY MIND!" Nightmare again just laughed.
"Well, then your mind must really hurt," Nightmare said cold as she blasted a beam at Luna, which hit her hard. Luna blacked out as she plummeted to the ground. Falling, she thought on how ponies disrespected her night, but others have come to appreciate it. Night is soothing, relaxing, and helps ponies thrive in the day. Luna thought on how ponies treated her like an equal to Celestia as well, even when she came back after being a hated monster that took the light of day away. Suddenly, she burst back into the sky, screaming in rage.
"HOW DARE THEE THINK THOU IS OVERPOWERING THE PRINCESS OF THE NIGHT?!" Luna hit the monstrosity. Luna blasted a beam at it, and then it was no longer existing. Luna gasped as her lungs cried out. The spell took the wind right out of her! Luna landed.
"Well done, my sister," said Celestia.
"Y-You saw?" Luna stuttered.
"Yes, after strolling in this beautiful night," another pony who loved the night as much as she, Luna smiled happily as Celestia gazed at the stars. Suddenly, her smile vanished.
"YOU COULD HAVE HELPED ME, YA KNOW! I WAS JUST BEING BEATEN UP BY THAT FOUL MONSTER!" Luna gasped at she sat up in her bed. She looked around, confused. Had it been a dream? Luna realized it was, and she was thankful. Such imagination she had! Luna smacked her head, as how could Nightmare Moon have come back? She stretched. Luna grinned and was excited to tell her sister of her dream. Luna didn't notice the black smoke as she walked out of the room, or the glowing eyes.
