Autumn Melody Delight, or plain Melody to most ponies. Is a young but brilliant science mare who has barely reached her adulthood. She lives a life of repetitive tedium and boredom as her Mother's lab assistant working on an experiment that, to her knowledge, has been completed three generations ago. What experiment you might ask, a way to repopulate Equestria with the limited gene pool available form Stable residents, and to avoid inbreeding.

Her life is thrown into disarray though with ponies becoming paranoid about imagined genetic experiments being conducted on unborn foals.The paranoia and mistrust of the science team reaches a boiling point, with a horrifying event. Melody finds herself forced to leave the safety of her Stable with her AI companion Caramel Smooch and the two security mares Scarlet Radiance and Cherry Stellar at her side she sets off as an exile in the equestrian wasteland.
