For the past millennia, after Luna's banishment, at the peak of the annual Nightmare Night celebration, a strange phenomena has plagued the mystical land of Equestria. On that night, a moon as red as blood rises in the sky. When this phenomena occurs, dark beasts emerge from the shadows to prowl the night in search of blood. On that night, nightmares become reality as ponies go mad upon being exposed to the Blood Moon's crimson rays while bloodthirsty beasts hunt them down.

The task to keep the beasts at bay falls down to the Hunter Order, an ancient organization in Celestia's employ who fight to keep Equestria free from the beast scourge and the night from becoming eternal.

Meanwhile, a young mare will soon discover her identity as a Hunter, and reluctantly tries to fulfill her duties while embarking on a journey to discover the darker secrets behind the causes of the Blood Moon.
