“Once upon a time in the magical land of Equestria…”

War. War never changes. For a thousand years, under the reign of the benevolent goddess Celestia, the ponies of Equestria knew peace. When the millennium ended, the land was beset by the dark one, the Mare in the Moon, the dreaded Nightmare Moon, to drown the land in an eternity of darkness. Only through the bravery of six special ponies, their paths woven into the tapestry of fate, was the Nightmare vanquished, and the goddess Luna rightfully returned to the side of her sister. Equestria was believed to enter into a new age; of friendship, love and harmonious unity. It was not to be.

With time came progress. Equestria evolved from a rustic realm, dominated by magic, into a great superpower of arcane technology. But to build a superpower, one needs resources. The ponies found this in the Zebra nation to the south. The Zebras had an abundance of coal and other resources Equestria lacked. Equestria had hoards of precious gems vital for the survival of the zebras.

Over time, need gave way to greed. With greed came treachery. With treachery came distrust. With one fatal error; Equestria, for the first time in millennia, relearned the ways of war. A war fought not with hoof, magic and blade, but a war of bullets, machines and megaspells. The land was stained with blood, then as swiftly as it had seemed to begin, it was all over.

The land was swept clean by the fruits of their innovations; scoured to the bone in magical balefire. The world fell into silence.

But this was not the end. Ponies survived; some hid away, finding safety in the great underground Stables, others sought safety in the deep dark places of the land, the pegasi, in their hubris fled to the skies.

From the bleached skeletons of the world ponykind would arise anew. The city of Bitspur, once a cornerstone of industry for the old kingdom, established its own powerbase in the northern Vanhoover Wastes. The heavy machinery hummed life into the ruins. With this life, came the predators, in the form of ponies in heavy, magically powered armor. The Steel Rangers desired the city for themselves. But Bitspur would not surrender, driving back the Rangers in the Battle of Bloodied Steel. The ponies of Bitspur cemented their position as the dominant power in the region.

As Equestria drowns in the cacophony of its next bloody chapter of war, heads turn further north, to the Crystal Mountains. Nopony knows what became of the lands beyond the great barrier of stone. Regardless of who controls the north, life in the Vanhoover Wastes is about to change…
