Chapter 1
"It was sunset. We were standing on the dock, saying our goodbyes. Your father had been sent out to sea again... He had gone to sea before, but I always felt a great emptiness whenever he left. We stared at the sapphire waters for a few moments. Then, he joined his crew on the boat, and the sapphire sea took him away forever..."
"Oh, Mama! Don't cry!" said Sapphire, as a tear slid down her mother's face.
"I'm sorry, darling. I loved your father so much, and I wish he had gotten to meet you. He was supposed to be home a month after you were to be born, but he never made it back... Before he left, he told me to name you Sapphire... Like the beautiful sea he loved so much..." she murmured, as she wiped away the tear.
Sapphire felt a heaviness in her heart as her mother spoke. Oh, how she wished she could have known her father! He was a heroic sailor, admired by all that knew him... But, he was gone, and Sapphire was left with old photos and the memories of her mother.
"Now, my darling, it is time for bed!" her mother said, tucking the blankets around her daughter.
"Mama, will you sing me a song?" asked Sapphire, and her mother began to sing.
Many, many years ago, the sun had disappeared.
The night when on forever; the sparkling moon was feared.
With no more day, foals could not play,
and ponies hid in fright.
It seemed that fair Equestria
was cloaked in eternal night.
Then one day, night broke with dawn,
but where had the fair princess gone?
It was such a great mystery.
why had she had left so soon?
But she had not left of her own accord;
She was swallowed by the sparkling moon.
