Once Upon a Time, in the Magical Land of Equestria...

Gather 'round fillies and colts, for I have a marvelous tale to tell you. I've told you stories of war heroes, valiant final stands, and wondrous mysteries. Well, this time, I have a tale of a daring adventurer. No, it's not a tale of Daring Do, the Pre-War treasure hunter.

This, my young listeners, is a story of a mare named Ruby.

Now, Ruby is, or rather was, a persistent unicorn. Ever since she was a filly, much like some of you here, her head was filled with tales of the Northern Tundra; An area many are warned to stay away from. Stories told by the passing trade caravans of radioactive blizzards and deadly creatures never deterred Ruby from her dreams of exploring the Northern Tundra. No, instead the stories drove her further into her dreams.

But before I go further with the story of Ruby, I have to start at the very beginning; Two-hundred years before Ruby entered this world. Long ago, the Northern Tundra held a city once known as Stalliongrad. During the war with the Zebras, Stalliongrad was known by many as the Steel Gate. For as long as the war raged, Stalliongrad was under constant siege. Those war stories of valiant heroes I told you of before? Many of their tales were because of the bloody fighting that occurred both in the city and the surrounding lands. Stalliongrad earned the moniker of the Steel Gate because it was the first, and only, line of defense between the North and the rest of Equestria.

If Stalliongrad ever fell to the Zebras, they would have a direct path to not only the Crystal Empire, but a path that wound from Vanhoover right to Canterlot. Once Canterlot fell, it would've only been a matter of time before the Zebra war machine spread down through the rest of our nation.

However, that never happened.

No, my fillies and colts, the Steel Gate never fell. But something far worse happened.

With the threat of Megaspells looming on the horizon, a military action known simply as Protocol Zulu was designed, intended to defeat our stripped attackers and save the city from the same fate as the rest of Equestria. When the bombs fell, many who survived the destruction swore upon their lives that the protocol was enacted.

Sadly, those who swear upon their lives are doomed to lose them. Unfortunately, Protocol Zulu never took place, thanks to a series of unexplained events in a bunker north of Port Grad, where a large facility purposely built for Protocol Zulu was located. When the facility never activated, balefire broke the Steel Gate.

From the ashes of the Steel Gate, those who defended her and those who sought to end her returned from the brink of death. Dark magic and madness twisted their minds and their bodies. It was said that when the bombs fell, the war was over; But not for those in Stalliongrad. For them, the war kept raging.

While an eternal war was being fought, the lands around Stalliongrad became twisted. The weather, normally bitter and cold, turned harsh and deadly. From the waters far to the north of Port Grad, radioactive blizzards spun up and raged across the war-torn landscape, burying the city and her secrets. From these rad-blizzards, creatures of nightmarish origins began to inherit the land, taking it back bit by bit. If the ghouls weren't bad enough, just wait until you see a Trench Crawler.

That is, if you're lucky enough to spot a Trench Crawler before it gets a hold of you.

Now, from what I've already told you, the Northern Tundra sound pretty dangerous, right? Well, my little friends, not for our young Ruby. After hearing stories similar to what I have told you, she only dreamed of exploring the dangerous ruins and discovering the secrets that were buried long before her time. Her eagerness and stubbornness kept her spirit of adventure alive. Her natural curiosity and wanting to learn about the past drove her actions to the breaking point. Her need for discovery almost broke her mind.

But, I think I've told you enough.

I think it's time you heard the story, right from our heroines' mouth.

Mares and Gentlecolts, Fillies and Colts, I present to you...
