Twilight, the ever studious and compulsive mare she was, went over her plan for tonight for the upteenth time. Sure, she had had a long week of work, and the stress had already set in a while back, but that still didn’t stop her from continuously pushing her mental limits. Tonight was special, and Twilight had been planning for it for a long time.
Just remember Twilight, stick to the plan, and everything will go just fine.
Twilight went over her breathing exercises, before another thought came to her head.
But what if it doesn’t go just fine? What if I mess up, or what if she’s not interested; what will I do then?
Twilight began to sweat lightly, her body shivering not do to the cold of the night, but for the fear that ran through her heart like a freight-train. Taking an even deeper breath, she tried to calm her panicking nerves. For good measure, while also counting to ten, and thinking of happy thoughts.
“Have I come at a bad time?” Came a voice from behind Twilight, a very familiar voice.
Turning around swiftly -- Twilight's guest was surprised the force didn't snap her neck -- She said. “Princess Luna, sorry, I was just letting my mind wonder.” Twilight gave a sheepish smile.
Luna smiled in return, taking a seat on the picnic blanket that spread out before her. “No need for such formalities, Twilight. You know me more than well enough to call me by my name only, and not my title.”
Twilight flushed a little, before taking a seat next to her fellow princess. “Yeah sorry about that, it’s just… The stress of work is getting to me.”
Luna nodded her head in understanding. “That is why I’m here, is it not? You wanted to spend some time with me, as a mini-vacation from all the strain of work?”
Twilight replied with more confidence in her voice. “Yes. It’s been a little while since we last had some time together, and I thought tonight would be the perfect time to catch up.”
“It has been too long, my friend. I’m glad we have the time now to spend with one another.” Luna then looked up to the sky as Twilight opened the picnic basket. “It is a lovely night, is it not?”
Twilight beamed a tender smile. “It’s always a lovely night, Luna.”
This made Luna giggle slightly. “You always were fond of my nights, a certain common ground we were able to converse deeply about the first time we ever really spent time with one another.”
Twilight pointed to the sky. “Well, you shouldn’t be so surprised, it is a masterwork after all.”
“Honestly, Twilight. You give me too much credit.” Luna then stared at the food Twilight set down before themselves. “But to more important matters, I am rather famished.”
Floating the freshly made sandwiches to them, they begin to take a couple of tentative bits to test the flavor of the midnight dinner. Luna’s eyes lighting up like her night sky, they even twinkled like the stars themselves.
“By my sister’s sun, Twilight. These sandwiches are delectable.” Luna took one look at her dinner, before looking towards Twilight. “You never told me you knew how to whip up such a good meal.”
Twilight blushed at the flattery, rubbing the back of her neck with one of her forehooves. “Well, I usual don’t take my own food very often, It’s just I wanted to make this night special.”
Twilight mental face-hooved at her cheesy remark.
Really, Twilight. Could you be any cringier?
Doubling back from her mental abuse of herself, Twilight listened to the reply she got from Luna. “Thanks, Twilight. I’m glad to hear that you put thought into these little picnic.”
Twilight let out an internal sigh, her mind coming back to ease as she told herself.
Okay~ Twilight, she doesn’t seem to mind the cheesy-ness, just roll with it.
Twilight went back to her meal, only taking glances at her partner from prolonged intervals of eating the sandwich she made for herself. Sweat started to drip from her brow, and it was clear to both participants to this midnight forey, that Twilight was clearly jumping mental hoops to get to somewhere, or to avoid something.
Luna caught eye of this, and asked her fellow Princess. “Is something the matter, Twilight?”
Twilight, yet again mentally facehoofing, replied to Luna earnestly. “Just… I guess I’m more stressed than I thought from the work I had to do this week.”
Luna put a hoof on the shoulder of Twilight, giving her a helpful smile of support. “It comes with the office, Twilight. Honestly, you’re doing a fine job at it.” Luna then removed her hoof from her partner. “You just have to roll with life's punches sometimes, trust me, I of all ponies should know that.”
Twilight shook her head to relieve herself of that mental bug that kept annoying her psyche. “Thanks, Luna. I needed that.”
“It’s no problem at all, Twilight,” replied Luna before going back to her meal.
Twilight took a huge intake of air, preparing herself for what she was about to do. Her entire future relationship with Luna all hinged on this conversation, so it was no big deal really. Just the possibility of one of her closes friends distancing themselves from her, because she thought she was weird or something.
No, Twilight. Stop thinking like that, it’s now or never. You can calculate any equation in Equestria, and can explain any form of magic in full. This should be a cakewalk for somepony like you.
Taking one more intake of air, Twilight began. “Princess Luna?” After she got the princesses attention, she continued. “There’s something I’ve been meaning to tell you for a while now.”
“For the past year or so, we have been hanging out more often, and with so, I’ve been learning more about you. I’ve learned more about your wonderful night, more about your lovely personality, and more about what makes you such a nice mare to be around.”
Luna was wide eyes, and was about to interject, but Twilight didn’t allow her. “Luna, you’re so determined to prove yourselves to your subjects, and you always work your hooves to the bone trying to prove that you’re adequate to rule. Which, to me, there’s no one more suited for the title of Princess of the Night.” Twilight paused one last time before finishing up her spew of emotion. “Luna, what I’m getting at, is that I really admire you. As a friend, and as a fellow princess, but more importantly… I’ve wanted to admire you as something more…”
There was a tension in the air as Twilight’s words lingered in it, Luna taking a sharp gasp of surprise. Luna, eyes so wide they could have swallowed the moon itself, peered into to Twilight like they were watching her very soul. At first they seemed happy, and this boasted Twilight’s new found confidence, that was until they started to water at the sides. Tears now running down her once pristine face.
Stupid, Twilight. You knew this would have only ended in failure… Now look what you’ve done!
Twilight, however, was interrupted when Luna lunged onto her, embracing her into a tight hug. Luna drilled into her with so much force, it knocked Twilight onto her back, forcing her to let out her own gasp of surprise.
The embrace seemed to have lasted for eternity for both parties, but in truth, it only lasted a few moments. It was after they departed from each other, that Luna began to speak. “Twilight, you have no idea how much that means to me.”
Before Twilight interjected, Luna raised her hoof to stop her. “Twilight, you should know this by now, but I also deeply admire you. Your intelligence, your cause to protect the ones you care for, and your adorable flushed features you have when flustered.” Luna winked at her after that comment. “Twilight, even after all my long years of living, I can tell you with one-hundred percent certainty, that you’re one of the greatest mares I’ve ever met, and one of my greatest allies.”
Luna went in, and softly kissed the other mare softly on the lips. Not too hard, but just the right amount of pressure to convey the emotions she was feeling towards her mare of affection. After a moment, she departed from their lip contact, and said. “And hopefully after today, lovers…”
Twilight honestly couldn’t believe what she was hearing, her mind to clouded with the thoughts of Luna kissing her at present. After a moment of shocked silence, Twilight said shrilly. “R-really?”
Luna giggled at that and replied with the biggest smile shown from the two of them that night. “Yes, Twilight. Really.”
It started from the bottom of her legs, and then gradually made its way up throughout the rest of her body. Twilight was shaking, but not from fear, from the pure euphoric joy that now flooded her senses. The only way for her to let out her energy was to yell over and over again while jumping around Luna. “Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!”
After a moment, Twilight’s energy died down, and she blushed a sheepish smile. “Hehe, sorry about that.”
Luna wrapped Twilight with one of her wings, and brought her closer. “It’s no problem at all, Twilight. It was quite enjoyable to watch, and a bit adorable.”
Twilight just scrunched up, and blushed deeper, all the while Luna laughed her lungs out from the mares cute expressions.
After a while of being each other's embrace, they began to finish off their meals. Luna being the first to finish, started to talk again after wiping bits of crumbs from around her mouth. “Now I know why these were special sandwiches.” She winked to her partner.
After finishing her meal for herself, she stated. “Yeah, though, I do have one question.”
“And that is.” Luna replied with a raised eyebrow.
“It’s just… what do you think our subjects are going to say about this -- about us? I don’t think they’d take to kindly to our little relationship.” Twilight looked away dejectedly.
Luna saw this, and pulled Twilight closer to her embrace. “There’s no need to worry about that, Twilight. After all, what would they know about our happiness?”
Twilight looked up to the older mare, smiling in agreement. “I guess you’re right.”
They both let out their own giggles, before returning to each other's warm embrace, looking up into the beautiful night sky. It was like this the entire night, neither mare wanting to leave each other’s side, for they were too caught up in the exuberant feeling that now flooded their very souls.
