Doctor Whooves: The Suns of Time
Sunset Shimmer sat in her home, doing nothing important. Excitement in Canterlot seemed to go up and down, like waves in the ocean. Occasionally there's that one big wave that you simply must surf, as it's simply too rare and amazing to miss. But once it dies down, it's merely a memory. Just something you remember.
It seems life changing at the time, doing something so big and important, but once it's over, life stays the same. You go back to your meager life, changed only slightly, with nothing new accomplished. Life stays the same, no matter what you did that seemed to change it.
That's what it was like for Sunset. She'd saved the world about seven times, but life always returned back to the way it was. She'd traveled through time, seen parallel universes, and faced down demons of all sorts. But at the end of the day, all she did was go home and lie down on her couch. She'd count her text messages, do her homework, watch some TV, eat dinner, and go to bed. Then she'd wake up the following morning, shower, go to school, come home from school, and lie down on the couch. The cycle would begin anew.
Once she'd been the personal protege of Princess Celestia, training directly under the ruler of the entire land. Now... she was a high school student in a different world, with no magic, and little excitement. Of course, it had been her own fault she was here. She has wanted more. She had wanted more than a privileged life. She wanted a perfect life. She became greedy, and self-absorbed. She left Equestria in search of more, and got less. She left her friends, mentor...family....since then, she'd turned into a raging she-demon, tried to take over the world, failed, reformed, and made friends.
Then she met him. The face-changing alien from another world. The Doctor had made her feel like she had a purpose, like she had a reason to be in this world. But then he'd leave. He'd get inside his box and leave her. He always came back, but a while later. Once with a different face. But he always left.
Sunset wanted to have a purpose. But when would it be enough? When would she truly be happy? She sat up, and exhaled, looking up with sad eyes, waiting for something to happen.
She heard the mailman driver by, and stood up, slipping on her boots and leather jacket. She went through the entryway of her home, and walked slowly toward her mailbox. She reached in and grabbed the papers contained within. She returned to her home, locking the door behind her, and searched through the mail.
Advertisements, collage letters, coupons, and... a letter. The letter was in a tan, wrinkled envelope, and it smelled old. There was nothing saying who it was from, only that it was addressed to her.
Sunset walked toward her desk and reached for a letter opener. Who could've sent the letter? She didn't know anybody out of the city, save the Dazzlings. And they would've texted her, not sent a letter. A letter was a symbol of something more personal, more intimate. The casual thing to do was send an email, or a text. A letter was formal. But who would send her a formal message?
She opened the envelope, and set the letter opener on her desk. She sat in her chair, reaching up to turn on the lamp. She pulled the letter out of it's envelope, and gazed at it. It felt old, and worn, as if it was written a long time ago.
Hesitantly, she unfolded it and read it to herself silently. As she looked through the words on the paper, her eyes widened, and her mouth began to gape. As she finished, she stood slowly, using the chair to hold her weight. Her breathing became heavy and erratic, and she dropped the letter in shock.
She walked slowly into her living room, and fell onto the couch, as her brain attempted to comprehend the message she was just told.
