Can You Launch A Newspaper Into A Mailbox?
Yeah, that's not gonna work
Load Full StoryAuthor's Note
This was something random I came up with one day. In all the times I got my newspaper delivered, they just fling it towards the driveway. But in Paperboy you can launch one into a mailbox, and in cartoons I've seen some characters been able to to make a perfect shot. Have you ever seen anyone that's been able to launch one into a mailbox!?
I don't expect it to be good, I just wanted to try and do a one-shot fic. Enjoy. Or not.
Yeah, that's not gonna work
It was a normal day in the small town near Canterlot High. It was the end of school on Friday, and everyone was excited to be heading back home. And on this day, Pinkie and Rainbow had planned on taking some of this time to go to an arcade, and they invited their world's Twilight Sparkle to come join her. She agreed to come with her to hang out with them of course.
So the three of them entered the arcade and from the sight of it, it was starting to look like it was going to be an okay day. There were barely any people in the arcade, which meant they could try almost all of the games. There were neon lights glowing, many of the machines were active and running, and there was a prize machine on so they could collect some prizes. In a flash, they began playing some of the games. Rainbow took a shot at a basketball machine and she won a lot of tickets. Pinkie took a shot towards a dancing game with Twilight, and both of them had fun dancing to Dance Magic Dance. While Twilight couldn't keep up with all of the buttons that flashed on the screen, she still had fun just playing the game with Pinkie. But their attention turned away from the game as they saw Rainbow laughing hysterically over at a machine. Pinkie and Twilight came to where she was and saw she was laughing near a machine of Paperboy.
"Um, Rainbow, why are you laughing?" Twilight asked.
"Just... just play the game, and.... you'll...you'll find out." Rainbow said trying her hardest not to laugh again.
Pinkie inserted a coin into the machine and began playing. From what she could tell the game was about delivering newspapers. She quickly understood the goal, and began moving her character on the screen. In the first round she was doing okay, she managed to get through the first level without any problems, but she also noticed some things. There were so many random things jumping out at her trying to knock her down, and to make matter even more crazy, it was so crazy and over the top it was hilarious. She soon started laughing as well at some of the things she saw.
"Oh my gosh. The...the... the Grim Reaper's in the game!" Pinkie was now tearing up at how hard she was laughing, the game was so ridiculous she had a hard time trying to focus. But soon she just dropped and rolled on the floor laughing at another factor in the game.
"The newspapers break the windows!" Pinkie exclaimed hysterically.
"Now I'm feeling bad for the paperboy. But, can you really break a window, with a newspaper?" Twilight asked.
"Can't say I ever tried it." Rainbow asked.
"I have!" Pinkie shouted. "I accidentally launched one through Celestia's front window. Boy he wasn't happy." Pinkie snickered.
After finding the strength to get back on her feet, she played the game once more, having only one life left, but she picked up on another thing.
"Ugh! Its so impossible to throw the newspapers into the mailboxes." Rainbow groaned.
"Well, I don't think that's really possible. All the times I've had my newspapers delivered, they're just dropped right onto the ground, and nowhere near my doorstep or by the mailbox." Twilight responded.
Pinkie turned around to Rainbow with a wicked smile on her face. "I have an idea for an experiment!"
"Well, what?"
"Guess."
Twilight took a moment to think about it, but a disturbed expression grew on her.
"No, we're not trying to do that."
"Come on! I want to launch one into a mailbox!" Pinkie whined.
"Pinkie. Have you ever seen anyone launch a newspaper into a mailbox!? No! No one tries that!"
Rainbow suddenly liked the sound of Pinkie's idea and grew a grin on her face. "Actually, I do have a bike, and a spare mailbox I haven't been using. Maybe, we could try an experiment?"
Twilight took in some consideration over the idea, and thought to herself 'Maybe this wouldn't be so bad. I've always been curious as to see if this would work, maybe its worth a shot.'
"Okay, I'm in. When should we try to do this?"
"Tomorrow, 10:00, my house." Rainbow stated.
"Alright, see you there." Twilight responded.
"Yep!" Pinkie replied.
The next day, on Saturday morning, Pinkie, Twilight, and Rainbow all showed up at her house ready to try the experiment. Twilight got the clipboard to write down all the results, Rainbow had gotten a bike for them to try and see if they could throw it by riding it, and Pinkie got enough newspapers for them to try throwing them.
"Alright, got enough newspapers to throw. Shall we begin?" Pinkie asked.
"Yeah, I got the clipboard ready, ready when you are." Twilight responded.
"Alright, here goes nothing."
Rainbow backed up in a position as if getting ready to throw a football, and then launched the newspaper towards the mailbox, however the throw wasn't strong enough and it just hit the grass a few feet in front of it. Rainbow tried again by getting a little closer, but it still landed in the same spot. Rainbow tried again, and again, and again, but still no luck.
"Ergh...." Rainbow kicked a stone towards the grass landing in a patch area in anger. "This is impossible. Let me try something else."
This time Rainbow got onto a bicycle and tried throwing it while riding it. Sadly she still got the same results. She couldn't launch it into the mailbox. She managed to get it to hit the mailbox but it just bounced right off of it and it didn't go right in. She tried riding on by it, but still it didn't go in. After failing to launch it 50 times in a row, she just pushed the bike over in anger.
"How is this impossible!? Its just like throwing a football!"
Pinkie this time tried by riding onto a bike, and she managed to launch it into the mailbox, with perfect speed, and perfect accuracy.
"Well. That worked. All you had to do was just keep your eye on the mailbox Dashie. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to work at Sugarcube Corner for the day. See you later!" Pinkie then skipped away leaving Twilight and Rainbow's jaw dropping.
"Well I guess with Pinkie Pie you shouldn't question it. Right? Rainbow? You okay?" Twilight asked.
"How.... How did she just launch one into a mailbox!?"
