- Flight Camp/19 Years Before Present -
Rainbow Dash buzzed her wings with a powerful force. She flew into the air and practically teleported to the other side of the flight camp yard. She landed gracefully in front of her timid friend who jumped back.
"Hey, Fluttershy. What’s up?" The eight-year-old cyan pegasus grinned happily.
"N-nothing much." Fluttershy replied as she backed into a corner. Her friend’s energetic mood scared her. She knew what was about to happen. "How are you?"
"I'm doing awesome!" Rainbow Dash's large magenta eyes lit up. Then she asked the once question Fluttershy has been dreading. "Wanna race?"
"Not at the moment. No." Fluttershy replied as her eyes cast downwards.
"Aww! Com'on, Fluttershy!" Rainbow Dash frowned, "You know I love racing!"
"Yeah but you always win." Fluttershy looked back at her friend and then back at the cloud floor.
"Yeah but it's fun!" Rainbow Dash seemed axis.
Fluttershy grew silent. She could race and try to beat Dash this time but that would mean hurting her best and only friend in the world. She could loss again in front of everypony and be teased for the rest of her life no matter how many times Rainbow tried to stand up for her. Winning wasn’t as important to her as her friendship was.
Rainbow Dash didn’t seem to want to give up on the race, "Pleeeeeease!"
"Ok..." Fluttershy hated saying “no” to anypony. In fact, she hated hating things.
A small happy squeal escaped Rainbow Dash’s mouth as she flew into the air, followed by Fluttershy. The two ponies flew until they had reached the top of the camp flag pole. The other campers stared up to watch.
"First one to that cloud and back here wins!" Rainbow Dash said as she pointed to a cloud about nineteen feet away. Rainbow Dash looked back to her and said, "On your mark..."
Fluttershy gulped before saying, "Get set..."
"GO!" Both ponies said as they shot off leaving a trail of cloud dust behind.
Fluttershy was a tail length from Rainbow and flew slowly. She accelerated and was soon ahead of her friend. Why was she flying so slow?
Fluttershy touched the cloud and waited for Rainbow Dash to do the same. He friend gave her a grin and a wink before shooting off like a rocket towards the flag pole. Fluttershy raced after her and closed her eyes.
When she opened her eyes Rainbow Dash was holding onto the flag pole with a large grin while still in the air. Fluttershy smiled back before landing softly to the ground. The other campers didn't seem to care as Fluttershy losing was the norm at the camp. Rainbow Dash spun down the pole with a laugh.
"Well I guess I won again!" She grinned.
"Yeah..." Fluttershy smiled shyly. Suddenly she heard her parents calling her name. As she turned around she whispered, "Anything to make you happy..."
- Ponyville / Present -
Fluttershy was resting under a tree and watching her little animal friends when a pegasus shadow began to hover above her. She looked up to see Rainbow Dash zoom towards the ground and land with a grin. She could tell by her expression that she wasn’t gonna be happy.
"Fluttershy!" The cyan pegasus called as she flew to her friend, "Wanna race?"
"No thanks, Dashie." Fluttershy smiled from where she sat. "You beat me last time..."
"Yeah but how do you expect to get good at racing if you don't race?" Rainbow Dash tilted her head in confusion.
"Simple…” Fluttershy paused with a smirk, “I don't plan to be a racer."
"But-" Rainbow began except Fluttershy cut her off.
"Fine." Fluttershy sighed.
"Ok!" The grin on Rainbow's face grew, "First pony to that cloud over there and back wins!" She pointed to a cloud that was about twenty feet away. "On your mark..."
"Get set..." Fluttershy said while she looked at the ground. This time she wasn’t going to let Rainbow Dash win. This would be a good lesson for her.
"GO!" They both shouted as the race began. Rainbow Dash was lagging behind so she could save enough energy to win.
Fluttershy touched the cloud and waited for Rainbow Dash. Once her friend got there, Fluttershy winked and bolted towards the tree that she'd been laying under earlier. No pony was around so no pony would see Rainbow Dash fail.
Rainbow Dash gasped and followed behind. No matter how much wing power she used Fluttershy seemed to go faster. Soon she reached the tree and tried to catch her breath. Fluttershy grinned at her as she sat back under the tree.
"I win?" Fluttershy asked with a smile.
"H-how did you do that!" Rainbow Dash asked, ignoring the question.
"I've always been that fast..." Fluttershy whispered but Rainbow Dash had heard her.
"But your always flying super slow!" Rainbow Dash gasped in shock.
"I was afraid that if I showed you how fast I really was you'd feel bad for being slow..." Fluttershy looked down as a tear slid down her face. This has been a bad idea. "I'm sorry."
"Fluttershy! I wouldn't feel slow or anything..." She looked up. "Ok maybe a little…But that's not the point!"
"I just hate seeing you lose." Fluttershy kept looking down. This was more of a bad idea then she’d thought.
"You don't have to try to let me win. If you’re this fast, then…Well…Just think of all the awesome races we can have." Rainbow's eyes lit up. "It'll be fun."
"I really don't like racing though..." Fluttershy looked up.
"Who cares?" Rainbow Dash asked with a grin.
"I do..." Fluttershy looked around and tried to find a reason to get Rainbow to forget about how fast she was, "If ponies find out I'm faster than you they will think that I'm awesome and you’re not."
Rainbow Dash gasped. "You're right...What should we do?"
"I'll keep pretending to be slow so that you can be fast." Fluttershy said with a smile.
"K." Rainbow Dash nodded.
