The End: Trial By Motherhood

***Part 1: Push! Push! Push!***

*Eight Months Later*

Sunshine Harvest arched her back and let out a monstrous roar. Tears flooded her eyes and streamed down her cheeks, dripping off of her chin and onto her shirt. She cried and howled, baring her teeth.

"Damn you, Dennis!" She snarled at the unicorn next to her. "Damn you! This is your fault!"

Dennis shot the nurse a terrified look. The nurse simply smiled.

"She's experiencing severe agitation, due to the pain." The nurse explained. "I don't think she really means that..."

"You did this to me! You will suffer for this!" Sunshine screamed at him.

Her horn was shining brightly, lighting the entire ward in a dark red hue.

"Offer her your hoof." The nurse suggested.

Dennis did as she told him, and he placed his hoof next to Sunshine's hand on the bed.

Sunshine immediately took the hoof in her fingers and squeezed it tightly, causing Dennis to let out a pained groan.

"AAAAAAAHHHHHH!" She shrieked as loudly as her lungs would allow.

"You're doing great, Miss Sunshine." The nurse said encouragingly. "Keep it up."

Sunshine turned to face Dennis. She had a fire in her eyes, and her face was filled with pain and agony.

"De-Dennis..." She stuttered. "Te-Tell me... me a st-story..."

Sunshine let out a groan and squeezed his hoof even tighter, causing Dennis to wince painfully.

"Um... Alright..." He muttered before clearing his throat. "A... A long time ago, back at Canterlot High... I had a crush on this... this girl..."

Sunshine made a pained expression, but she bit her lower lip to keep herself from screaming and interrupting him.

"She was... a very special girl, because, unlike other girls, she had... powers, magic... My friends, they didn't like her. They... distrusted her, because she wasn't normal... I was afraid of being... outcasted by my friends, so I... joined them in their... teasing of the girl..."

Sunshine bit her lower lip until she could taste blood.

"I just didn't know how to... to tell the girl how I really felt about her... It wasn't until I actually talked to the girl that... that I knew I was in love with her... She had everything I wanted... Beautiful looks, a quirky sense of humor, a great taste in food..."

Dispite all of the agony, Sunshine's lips curled into a weak smile.

"Now, that girl is... squeezing the life out of me, trying to deliver a baby we made together..."

"Right... I'm going to need you to push, now, Miss Sunshine." The nurse ordered. "Push, now!"

Sunshine let out a high-pitched scream, deafening Dennis and the nurse.

"That's it, Miss Sunshine!" The nurse exclaimed. "Again! One more push!"

Sunshine screamed to the point of blacking out as she pushed the pony out of her womb. When Sunshine's screams fell silent, a new screeching echoed through the ward, the cries of a newborn pony.

"He's a unicorn!" The nurse said happily. "Your little colt is a unicorn!"

Sunshine looked half dead, but with help from Dennis, she managed to sit upright.

"Give me... my baby..." She said in a rough voice.

The nurse wasn't one to argue, and she quickly passed the little colt along to Sunshine.

Sunshine's eyes filled with joyful tears as she held the little colt wrapped in cloth. A unicorn, he was. Like his father, he had a dark, steel-colored coat. Like his mother, his mane was a firy red.

"He's... beautiful..." Sunshine cried, nuzzling the little colt.

Dennis was speechless. His throat choked as he tried to hold back his tears. Dispite his best efforts, Dennis's eyes flooded like a broken dam.

"I can't believe it..." He muttered softly. "We... We're parents..."

He leaned in towards the colt closely.

"Hey there, little guy..." Dennis said in a 'baby' voice.

Sunshine pulled Dennis' face towards her own, and she placed a loving kiss on his snout.

"Thank you..." She whispered into his ear. "I... I'm so happy..."

Dennis smiled and kissed her on the cheek.

They sat there together, holding the newborn colt. Now, a mother and a father, a family.

***Part 2: Seeing Double***

Several minutes later, the family and friends were aloud to enter the ward to see the new parents and their little pony.

It was a lot of family and friends...

From the human world, Sunset Shimmer, Applejack, Big Mac, Apple Bloom, Principal Celestia, Twilight Sparkle, Rarity, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, and Fluttershy had journeyed through the portal to see the baby. Even Dennis' father was with them. He wasn't happy about being a pony, but he kept his complaints to himself for the sake of his son.

Needless to say, Sunshine was a bit confused when she woke up to two of everyone she knew standing around the bed.

"What's his name?" Sunset asked softly.

Everypony else eagerly nodded their heads. They all wanted to know the newborn colt's name.

Sunshine and Dennis exchanged glances.

"I think..." Sunshine said slowly. "We have decided to name him... Summerset Shimmer, after you, mom..."

Sunset blinked back her tears as she nodded her head.

"That's so sweet..." Both Twilights said in unison.

Captain Simco grumbled something inaudible, but no pony paid him any attention. All focus in the room was trained on the little colt, Summerset Shimmer.

The little pony squeaked a yawn and rolled over in his mother's arms, extracting adoring 'awe's from everypony.

"I think we should leave them alone for a little while..." Princess Celestia suggested.

With the nurse's help, everypony except for Sunset Shimmer, her wife, Applejack, and Simco was forced from the ward.

After a few moments of silence, Sunset was the first to speak.

"I can't believe I'm a grandmother..." She said with a light chuckle. "Thanks for making me feel old."

Sunshine smiled and caressed her little colt.

"What can I say, mom?" She asked, looking over at Dennis. "I guess it just... runs in the family..."

"What do you think, dad?" Dennis asked his father.

Simco approached the bed and eyed the little colt suspiciously. Summerset looked back at him, eyes wide with wonder.

Simco let out a sigh and managed a smile.

"I think... you two did a great job." He said softly. "You'll make good parents..."

"I couldn't agree with ya' more..." Applejack said with a huge smile. "I'm so proud of ya', Sunshine..."

Sunshine beamed proudly.

"Thank you, Momma Applejack."

Sunset turned to her wife and Simco, and she motioned her towards the door.

"We'll be just outside." She said to Sunshine, who nodded her head.

When they were alone with their baby, Dennis let out a soft chuckle.

"What's so funny?" Sunshine asked him.

"Oh... No-Nothing..." Dennis lied, still chuckling. "I... I just never thought I'd be a father before I got married..."

Sunshine frowned and looked at the sleeping colt in her arms.

"I meant to ask you something about that..." Sunshine said softly. "I was going to wait, but I guess now is as good of a time as any..."

Dennis' eyes widened.

"You really want to-"

"Yes..." Sunshine cut him off. "I... I want to marry you... Back home, of course. We could get Rarity to make you a nice suit, and Pinkie Pie could help with a big cake... I know it's a lot to ask for, but I really love you, and I just thought-"

Sunshine's rambling was silenced by Dennis' lips pressing against her own. When he pulled away, several moments later, his expression was stone and serious.

"Yes." He said at last. "Yes, Sunshine, I'll marry you..."

Sunshine closed her eyes as Dennis kissed her full on the lips. Without breaking the kiss, he climbed into the bed with her and Summerset, and he held them both in his hooves.

Sunshine didn't know what the future would bring, but she did know she could count on her friends and loved ones to help her through everything life offered. Her greatest adventure was over, perhaps, but the ride was only just beginning.
