A Home Without a Light
Previous ChapterThe sun shined through the window as dust particles lazily flew about the room. The room itself was neat, the bookshelf's books were put away with care, clothes folded nicely on top of the dresser, papers with half drawn pictures lay in a pile on the left side of the desk while the right side had pencils, crayons, and markers. The only other things the room contained was a plain light blue carpet and a bed. The bed being messy with its blankets wrinkled and its pillows crumpled.
Why the bed wasn't neat like the rest of the room is answered by the fact that a pony lay on it sleeping soundly. This pony, more of a colt, was the sole occupant of this room. While the colt would have gladly slept in, the sun's light made it hard to do so. He pulled the blanket over his head in an attempt to block out the light. The blanket was only a temporary solution as the light quickly found a way through the blanket. The colt gritted his teeth and used a pillow to cover his head. The pillow he chose, however, was simply too thin to keep the light away for long. With a sigh of defeat, the colt got off the bed.
"Why do mornings have to exist?" the colt asked while looking at the sun's light with loathing.
"Maybe they exist because, without them, you would never wake up?" his mother said with a smile.
"I would wake up! Some time later..." the colt protested turning to look at his mother.
"Is that right?" his mother asked raising her eyebrow.
"Yes, it is!" the colt responded confidently.
"If you say so," his mother said with a chuckle. "Anyway, breakfast is on the table downstairs. Unless of course, you want to sleep until lunch?"
"That was only one time!" the colt said uncertainly. "Or was it two? No, wait it was three, it only happened three times!"
"Only three times? I recall you sleeping in a little bit more than that," his mother said with a knowing smile.
"Okay, maybe it was more like seven or ten. I heard something about breakfast?" the colt admitted while changing the subject.
"You heard right, its downstairs waiting for you," his mother said while leaving the room. Eagerly he followed behind, the smells of eggs, toast, and pancakes drifted through the air. Once he got to the table, he saw a plate waiting for him just as she said. The colt hungrily starts to wolf down the food.
"Slow down, take some time to breathe at least," his mother said chuckling at his antics.
"Sorry," the colt said sheepishly. Then out of the blue, a question came to mind. "Where's dad?"
"Your father decided to...leave for the rest of the day," his mother said curtly. From that point on the dining room was left in an uncomfortable silence. Breakfast ended without another word spoken.
"Could I go outside?" the colt asked.
"Yes, but don't go too far and make sure to be back before lunch," his mother responded.
Outside the colt went, to the nearby woods. Not that he was going to enter the woods of course. He merely sat on the nearby hill.
"Hello!" a filly said cheerfully to the colt.
"Hi, when did you get here?" the colt asked the filly while turning to face her.
"I just got here a couple of minutes ago," the filly explained. "Then I saw you, said hi and here we are,"
"Do you come here a lot?" the colt asked her.
"Yeah, I've never seen you before, though, do you come here often?" the filly asked him.
"No, not really, this is the first time that, I've been here actually," the colt responded.
"First time being here? There's something that I want to show you!" the filly said enthusiastically.
"Where is it?" the colt ask's looking around the empty area.
"It's in the forest," the filly said. "Do you want to see?"
"I don't know. It's not that far right?" the colt asked.
"It's sorta close," the filly said scrunching up her face in thought. "Yeah! Not that far from where we are,"
"Alright, if it's not that far," the colt said curiously.
"Follow me!" the filly said while running into the forest.
"Hey wait up!" the colt said as he started to fell behind before he almost lost sight of her, she stopped. "Why did you-" he trailed off when he saw what she was looking at.
In front of both of them was a large body of water, crystal clear all the way to the bottom. The trees covered a majority of the sky, leaving only a small area where light could slip through. In the water were fish of all kinds of different colors and sizes. The bottom of the pool of water had uncountable amounts of crystals.
"Wow," the colt said.
"I know right!" the filly said with a smile. "I always try to come here whenever I can,"
"I can see why." the colt said still marveling at it all.
The two simply stood there in silence for a bit.
"I don't know what time it is but I think I have to go," the colt said.
"Aw, really?" the filly said slightly disappointed.
"Yeah, I could come back, tomorrow," the colt said with a smile.
"Alright, you better be there, though," the filly said smiling. The two youths traversed the forest to its exit. At the forest's exit, they said their goodbyes. The colt headed home while the filly went in another direction.
Upon getting home, he opened the door only to see his mom and dad. Both looked like they had been through a heated argument but once they saw their son they must have put it off for later.
"Look like my little adventurer is back!" his father said with a smile. "Finally decided to go farther than the backyard this time?"
"Yeah, near the forest," the colt answered closing the door behind him.
"Near the forest, you didn't go in right?" his mother asked him.
"No," the colt said feeling guilty of lying to his mother.
"Well, at least you don't lie, unlike somepony I know," his mother remarked.
"Maybe that somepony doesn't lie," his father said gritting his teeth. "Instead, the pony who thinks he's lying is overreacting," his mother simply gave him a sour look in response.
"Why don't you go up to your room? Your father and I have a lot to talk about," his mother said. The colt listened to his mother and went up to his room.
The room was as clean as he left it. Nothing had been touched or moved. The only thing that had changed was the light sinking beneath the horizon.
