The tiny cloud of black smoke hovered in the alleyway, ignored by the many children out and about. It was nightmare night after akkm so the cloud could’ve been mistaken for some creative prop. The cloud watched, not with hostility, but with anxiety. The cloud condensed into a dark, oily liquid, that seemed to move of it’s own volition. The liquid slithered across the cobbles, careful to avoid being seen. The darkness was on the hunt. It followed a trail of powerful magic, light magic, hoping to find a meal at its source. The darkness was ravenous. It hadn’t eaten for a month, at least, and needed to feed soon, or die. As the magic grew in thickness, so to did the crowd. Once the darkness finally reached what was exuding the magic, it looked upon it in awe. It was Queen Celestia. The darkness tried to escape while it still could, but it was already surrounded by a golden aura.
“What have we here?” Celestia murmured to the condensed liquid, now seeming to only be a drop. “I’ll have a look at you later…” With that, the darkness was put in a jar, a lid snapping tightly shut around it.
Later that night, in her personal study, Celestia dumped the contents of the jar onto her desk, being careful not to touch it. Immediately, the liquid shuddered, growing in size until it took a solid form. The form of a small, violet filly. The foal looked to be newborn, her eyes closed and chest rising and falling steadily. “What is this?” Celestia murmured, careful not to wake the tiny creature. She had to resist the urge to poke it, just to confirm that it was real. What WAS it? This just didn’t make any sense! Magic, even dark magic, wasn’t sentient, and certainly wasn’t a pony!
Celestia took a deep breath to calm herself down, then went back to examining the strange filly. How was this possible? Just…
The filly opened it’s eyes, and looked at her. The eyes were slitted, like a cat’s, glowing purple, a sort of awareness present. It yawned, then closed its eyes again.
“What in the name of faust?” Celestia quietly exclaimed, not wanting to wake the… Filly? Was it a filly, or was it something else? Ugh! What was going on here!? If only she knew WHAT it was! Wait, the library!
Celestia yawned deeply, then took a long look at the filly next to her. There had been no hint of what she was in the library’s books on dark magic, monsters, even varieties of pony. No matter, a filly was a filly, regardless of origin. But what to do with her? Celestia couldn’t risk letting it roam Equestria freely, but she didn’t want to imprison something that had yet to do anything wrong. Its eyes opened slowly, and it looked from side to side. Celestia watched as it struggled to its hooves tumbling out of the small bed she’d prepared for it. Gripping it in her magic, Celestia brought the filly over to her face, looking deep into it’s eyes. “What are you?” She asked, only to receive a blank look and a yawn in reply. Celestia sighed, then set the filly down at her side, allowing it to cuddle up to her side and fall back asleep. She let herself smile, looking down at the peaceful form of the filly. It needed a name, a fitting name… Dusk shine? No, too coltish. Gleaming shield? No, how about…. Twilight Sparkle.
