The Bridge: The Shadow of Things to Come
The Presence of a Rising Darkness
Attu Island, 1983
In the alaskan seas, there rests an island that many have known simply as Attu. And for many long years, it has remained a peaceful place, unencumbered by the presence of man. And thus, it has remained, with no humans residing upon this solitary piece of land. However, despite its peaceful appearance, this island has held a dark, and evil secret. One that has remained buried within it for centuries, since the time of the great guardians of Terra, or Planet Earth as it has been called. In said time, the world was home to an ancient, but advanced civilization which had the capability to utilize both science AND magic, the latter by harnessing the very mana that dwells within the world, and by extension, every living being.
And these humans used their knowledge and skill in these arts to give life anew to many species of the planet's previous lifeforms, the dinosaurs. Lives which were once extinguished by the horrible power and fury of the Ghidorah's, were given a second chance of existence by these advanced, and skilled beings. Unfortunately, they were never able to truly reach their true potential. For around this time, the earth's greatest, and most powerful guardian, Reijuu, had decided that all life was meant to be extinguished forever, and set about to cleanse the world of every living thing there was. This resulted in a secondary extinction of a dominant race, only this time involving the human race itself, and all of their achievements and advancements. All lost to the apocalyptic power of the being who would be forever known from this moment on as Bagan, the God of Destruction. But before he could completely eradicate all of ancient humanity, the other guardians of the planet, Known as Mothra and Battra, who were members of an entire race of beings known as the Divine Moths, stood against him, and attempted to stop him. But even though they succeeded, the price was greater than any could imagine: many lifeforms, both human and dinosaur, perished in the battle, and nearly all of the sacred kaiju were destroyed, leaving only one Mothra, and only one Battra.
And yet, still they managed to overcome adversity, and defeated the one whom they once considered a great ally. In spite of his immense, and terrible power, Bagan was imprisoned beneath the Island of Attu itself, with his once mighty strength all but eradicated. There, while five new guardians were created by the last ancient civilization before they drew their last breath, it was hoped beyond prayer that he would remain for all eternity, sealed within the very planet he once protected, and had so willingly betrayed. But evil such as Bagan's could not be killed so easily. For in spite f the power used to defeat him, the Divine Moth's were unable to vanquish him, and in time his strength began to return. Until finally, after 30 years of peace following the death of Gojira, that Bagan had awakened at last. But unfortunately, he was far too weak to free himself from his tomb, and was forced to wait until his own strength returned to him. Once that happened, he would finish what he began 73,000 years ago, and ensure that no living thing, human or guardian, would ever rise to face him. However, it would seem that he would have some trouble with the arrival of an unexpected creature: a second Godzilla, who was given a new form by the sinking of a nuclear submarine. After a few weeks, he was given strange dreams which haunted and plagued him for many days. And though he was unaware of it, this was a result of the spirit of Terra itself, warning Godzilla of the danger of Bagan's return. And even though he had no complete understanding of the dreams, he knew they were related to the energy he sensed a while back, which he sensed to be very dangerous. Now he understood that this thing he sensed was a threat to his home, and he set out for Attu Island to find and eliminate it. A task which may not be as easy as he thinks. But nevertheless, that is where this tale begins.
Attu Island, 1983 6:00 p.m.
It was a dark and stormy night, as a hurricane had come about, turning the area into a raging sea of trouble. For here, a new Godzilla, who would eventually be known as Godzilla Senior, was fast approaching the island in response to the horrible nightmares he was having recently. And though he had no idea what it was exactly about, he knew it had something to do with a mysterious, but dark presence he had sensed a while back coming from the island. Not wanting to take any risks, Senior made his way through the waters, reaching Alaskan territory until he eventually surfaced to see the island itself. And saw it he did, as it appeared to be shrouded in darkness itself as the storm raged on, covering the island in little to no light at all save for the occasional lightning flashes going off in the sky. Now, while this sight may have unnerved some who would see this foreboding place, Senior was not "some". He was fierce, strong, and he was determined to prevent whatever potential threat to his world may arise no matter what. However, his presence did not go unnoticed by the one he was seeking.
Deep within the island itself, in a hidden chamber hidden deep underground was Bagan, who lay upon a massive cluster of stone as if it were a makeshift throne. And although this chamber had a volcanic "river" flowing through it, it did little to hinder him, for even as weak as he was, earthly elements were not a real threat to him. Though it did not keep his visage from being hidden in shadow, where he rested, waiting for his strength to return. But as he sat there, possibly pondering on his eventual plans for his escape, his eyes which were currently closed had soon opened, revealing two crimson, glowing slits which bore no emotion save for cruelty, malice, and pure evil. But for now, the only thing he was feeling was concern. For the presence he sensed was a powerful one, and something which could pose a threat to him if it found him. Before anything else, however, he spoke in a deep, demonic voice, which could make even the devil himself shudder in fear.
"Mother night. Fold your dark arms about me. Protect me in your black embrace! I sit alone, an impotent exile, whilst this force, this...PRESENCE, comes forth to torment me!"
But then finally, after he finished speaking, he began using his power, limited as it is, to begin summoning 3 entities known only to him, and his former allies.
"Come forth, and obey!"
3 creatures appeared before him, each resembling a mythical beast of some sort. These were the aspects, beings of pure, spiritual power who were all that remained of the one called Reijuu. Now servants to Bagan's will, and his alone.
"Ah, my beasts. Come closer."
The three did as commanded, and stood before their master, as he pointed a clawed finger straight toward them.
"You summoned us, lordship?" They said in unison. Although they were aspects of Bagan's spirit, and could be used as his avatar's if necessary, they still possessed a sense of individuality which made them somewhat sentient, though they remained subservient.
"Are you not the most loathesome of many monsters?"
"Truly master."
"And is your "heart" black, and full of hate?" he asked.
"Black as midnight, black as pitch, blacker than the foulest witch." The aspects replied.
"And that is why i have called you forth. Since i must continue to regain my power, as a remain a prisoner in this accursed tomb, you shall be my greatest defense."
"As is our sole purpose, master."
Bagan then took a brief moment to give out a brief sigh of what might've been annoyance, but it was difficult to say. Either way, he then began to speak again.
"Something troubles me. I feel a presence in the ocean nearby. A force i had never sensed before until now. One that may even rival the terror siblings themselves."
"Must be a dread indeed if it could trouble you, lordship."
"And looking upon this wretched creature, One would not think that it could contain such power! It could ravage the whole of terra with it! YOU MUST FIND IT FOR ME, AND DESTROY IT!"
As for the Aspects, there was only one thing they could ask which could help give them an understanding to their task.
"What does it look like, lord?'
As if being paid insult, Bagan lashed out with his right claw, and grabbed all 3 kaiju in a crimson/black tendril of ethereal energy which held them in place, and greatly intimidated them, as they knew their master's wrath was something they didn't wish to incur. He then roared out "FOOLS!" Before speaking again.
"Let this serve to remind you: the creature possesses a series of spines upon its back, reaching out like the leaves from a massive, black tree!"
"We get the point, lord!"
Luckily for them, Bagan cut off his power, dropping them back on their feet, and then slamming his fist onto the stones he rested upon.
"Kill it if you can. It represents too great a threat to be left alive. But bring its energy to me. It can be used to replenish my strength even further. And hasten my...inevitable return to the world."
Even the Aspects themselves couldn't help but feel the excitement their lord was feeling with the prospect of wreaking havoc upon the world once more.
"Yes, a rare opportunity this is. But where should we look, master?"
"There is only one means for attracting such a simple, savage animal. One weakness that never fails."
"But what be this weakness? Please, you teach us."
"Its sixth sense. Its sixth sense!"
Understanding now what he meant, the Aspects then bowed before Bagan, and then faded into shadow in order to journey to the surface.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Up above, Senior had finally reached Attu island, all the while the raging sea continued to churn, and splash about with massive waves, and strong winds from the storm. Godzilla had been searching for quite some time, but so far, he couldn't find any trace of the kaiju he was looking for. Although his senses led him to this area, he could could find its exact location. Something which frustrated Godzilla quite a bit.
Godzilla Sr: "Grr, damn it. I can sense it: there's something around here, but i can't find out where it is!"
After a few more minutes of looking, Senior began to grow weary of his search.
*sigh* "Still nothing. Maybe my senses are out of whack or something. But i'm sure something is here, i just don't know where-"
Suddenly, his senses picked up something. Something that seemed greatly similar to what he was looking for. Though when he felt what it was, he sensed that it was in a different direction. Away from where he currently was. This reminded him once again of his nightmares, which aso warned of a creature which may have been created by the monster he sought, though there was no real way to determine of this was the case. So, with no real explanation for this strange turn of events, Godzilla decided to simply go to where he sensed the presence. The sooner he dealt with this thing, the sooner his home territory would be safe. So after a few minutes of swimming, Senior made his way to a different part of the island. It was still in the ocean, but it was much further from where Godzilla had been. And it was here he began searching frantically for the thing he was after. Though he wasn't having much luck finding it, since it almost seemed to be taunting him. Challenging him to follow it, as it seemed to keep popping from different directions at once. Finally he got tired, and let out a loud, threatening roar to basically call out this mysterious being.
"Alright, i have no idea who you are, but i know you're here! Show Yourself! You will not escape me!"
Then, as if to reply, a haunting cry cut loose through the gusts of wind and water. To a human, it was a hellish scream. To a kaiju, it was a demonic, echoing voice.
"What have i done to wrong you beast?" it spoke out. "Why do you wish to destroy me?"
"It's not what you've done, it's what you're going to do!"
"Well that hardly seems fair."
"Neither does murdering every living soul in my territory, but the dreams told me enough. And since you were created from Bagan's essence and that was his goal, I know you intend to do the same thing as well!"
After a few moments of silence, a slow, deep laugh boomed in through the storm. It was in the gradual, mocking tone that would have made many souls blood run cold. The voice called out again, replacing the hellish cackling.
"I underestimated your intuition, beast; I thought you too primitive to figure out my motives."
Senior's eyes then locked on to a strange, unfamiliar form emerging from the surf. And even though he couldn't make out the figure's features due to the storm, he could see that this being was indeed an imposing beast. Which was only made worse by the red energy which began surging around the being's form, it's eyes beginning to glow the same. It then spoke out in a challenging tone to Godzilla.
"But since you have, i have no choice but to silence you!"
It then fired off a blood red beam of energy from it's chest straight at Godzilla. And just before he could do anything else, he raised up his arms in a protective stance, ready to block the blast once it strikes. It hit him with immense force, with the energy feeling as cold as the dead, and actually managing to burn against his scales, causing excruciating pain in his arms. And while his arms were alight with pain, Senior did his best to hold off the attack. But he soon began losing his footing, and began sliding backwards on the ocean floor. Luckily, the attack stopped before it could possibly knock him over, or hurt him even more than it already did. And while his arms still hurt, it was a passing feeling as his regenerative factor began healing, and fixing the damage. With the attack finished, Senior decided he would retaliate in the same manner, and started charging up his heat ray for a good strike.
"You can try, you can fail!" Senior roared out as he fired the heat ray directly at his opponent, hitting him directly in his chest, or what passed for a chest.
The being then let outa horrid screech of pain as its flesh seemingly burned from such a powerful attack. Never before had any of the Aspects, and Bagan in turn, felt such seering pain in their life. Even the divine moth's couldn't have burned them so during their battle long ago. But it was quickly remembered that the beast's drew their power from their master, and were only as strong as he was. Meaning that since he was still very weak, and nowhere near his full strength, the Aspects themselves were not at the sufficient strength to deal with Godzilla. Nevertheless, they were given a task, and they would fullfill it until either Senior perished, or they did. But it seemed more likely that the latter was the more possible outcome in this battle. Senior took the opportunity given to him to charge towards his enemy, hoping to fight more up close and personal. But his enemy had other plans, and as quick as lightning, two more creatures emerged from the ocean, catching Senior completely by surprise. Pressing the advantage, all three of the creature's jumped onto Godzilla, and began attacking him, and holding him in place.
They slashed, punched, bit, and tore at Godzilla with complete ferocity, not giving him any quarter of breath. Senior then saw that he was being overwhelmed, and did the only thing he could think of: he charged up his body with nuclear energy, and fired a nuclear pulse which pushed the Aspects back a few feet, at least giving him some breathing space. He then went for the closest enemy he could reach: the dragonic aspect. Before it could react, Senior bit down on it's neck, and began tugging it around as it tried to get out of his grip. The aquatic aspect attempted to get Senior by leaping on him from behind, but Senior sensed the attack, and managed to swat the kaiju away with his tail. However, the Oni Aspect finally got Senior off of the dragoni Aspect before gripping its throat, and the hurling him back several feet. With the added time given to them, all 3 Aspects joined up together, and decided that it would be best to fight this foe together. So, using an ability they had always possessed, they fused together into a form that resembled Bagan in the days of when he was still Guardian of Terra, and before he took his new name. When Senior got back on his feet, and saw this fused abomination, he knew things were about to get serious.
*thinking* "Better be careful. I have no idea what this thing can do, but i can tell it means business."
Sensing his weariness, the totem beast, or as it was known, spoke again in his taunting, demonic tone, hoping to intimidate the kaiju king.
"Sorry for the inconvenience, but i feel that it's time to end this little game of ours here and now. Not that it hasn't been fun, mind you. It's just that i have business to take care of, and you are being a pest by keeping me from it."
Dark Reijuu's body then began glowing with a white energy, which appeared to be creating an aura around him of immense power. In this energy field, several small objects appeared to be forming as what some could describe as diamonds. Numerous, small, asteroid sized diamonds which began filling the area where the fused demon began sending the energy as Godzilla watched with anticipation, and also worry. For he could sense that alot of power was going into this attack, and he had no idea what would happen. So he braced himself for what could possibly be something very bad.
"Now i think it's time for you to disappear! DIAMOND STORM!"
He threw his arms downward, with the meteor sized objects hurling down towards Godzilla, who braced himself for what was coming. The attack struck with the force of a meteor shower, repeatedly pummeling Godzilla from above as dozens upon dozens of the things fell from the sky. Senior felt as if he was being punched repeatedly by a gigantic kaiju. One that wouldn't give him an inch, nor give him time to think as he felt his body in a good deal of pain as the energy pounded into him, and also exploded upon impact, making things even more difficult for the kaiju king. The worst thing was Godzilla was actually starting to get tired. This barrage was particularly strong, and he had never experienced something so fierce before. He knew that if he didn't act fast, he would very well lose, and his enemy would win. But then he remembered his dream, his nightmares. Nightmares of an apocalyptic force which would bring death and destruction to all that lay before it. Senior's territory, his home, everything would be destroyed if he failed. But he was not going to fail. For he was Godzilla, and he was King of the Monsters, ready to prove himself here and now, more than willing to earn his title. And no mishappen monster was going to get the better of him! With that, Godzilla began building up his energy to it's fullest as his body began glowing bright blue. Something which garnered Dark Reijuu's attention, and drew confusion to his face. Then, right at that moment, Godzilla came charging out of the attack, and then he roared at the top of his lungs saying, "I WILL STOP YOU!!!"
He then fired his ray straight at Dark Reijuu, the latter looking rather shocked at first, but then his expression changed to utter horror as he saw the immense attack heading straight for him. But since he wasn't strong enough to block it, he could only stand around helplessly as the attack tore right into him. At the same time, the diamond storm ceased its strike, and dissipated with Dark Reijuu unable to sustain it. Dark Reijuu began screeching in horrible agony as the energy of Godzilla's supercharged breath began overloading his body, and filling him with unstable energy as it tore him apart from the inside out. The energy began clashing with the demon's own dark energy, and it began surging uncontrollably as it made Dark Reijuu start glowing with an unnatural, purple light. Brighter and brighter it grew, until eventually, Dark Reijuu disappeared in a massive exposion which was so strong, and so bright, it even managed to push Godzilla back several yards as he was forced to shield his eyes from the light. When he opened his eyes again, he could see no sign of Dark Reijuu, or any of the Aspects around. Even the storm itself was gone, whether because of the blast, or because of Dark Reijuu's disappearance. Either way, this all meant only one thing: Godzilla had triumphed. His mission was a success, and he had proven himself today as king.
"Yes, i did it! Thank Tanaka! It's over!" He exclaimed in pride.
He then began scanning the area for any signs of the demons, any at all. But try as he might, he couldn't find any trace of them.
"Guess this does mean i won, then. Good. My home is finally safe, for now at least. So now i can-ARGH!"
He then bent over, feeling out of breath all of a sudden. He had no idea what happened, but he knew it wasn't good.
"Tanaka, damn it! I used up all of my strength in that last attack. I guess it took alot more out of me than i thought. But what the hell was that pained jolt i felt? He couldn't have hurt me that bad.....could he?"
But, for whatever reason that quick bit of pain struck him, his sudden exhaustian proved only one thing: he needed to replenish himself quickly. And he knew that the only thing which could do so was nucclear radiation. However, it was in a human city, and it would mean a direct confrontation with them if he went there. And all this time, he tried keeping a low profile to keep people from attacking him out of fear, since he prefered to live peacefully alone with noone bothering him. Going into a human city could change all that, and he wasn't fond of humans anyway.
"But i've got no choice. It's the only way to get my strength back."
He thought it over for a few minutes before he finally decided.
"Fine, then. I guess it's time to make myself known to the world. It was going to happen eventually, so better late then never. Either way, the human race is gonna get one serious wake up call and see that Godzilla is back, and better than ever."
And so, he proceeded to the nearest place he sensed to have nuclear energy: Tokyo, Japan, unsurprisingly. And no matter what happened, whether it would be a repeat of the events of 1954, or if Japan would be destroyed this time from Godilla's wrath, it didn't matter. For soon, the entire world be know of the events which would soon unfold as the age of the kaiju would begin again after this. But here, in 1984, the year where it all began, the whole would bear witness to the moment that started it all: The Return of Godzilla.
Epilogue:
Meanwhile, back in the tomb beneath Attu Island, Bagan had just finished everything through the eyes of his Aspects. Godzilla's appearance, his claims of knowledge of Bagan's plans via dreams, all the way up to his final attack which destroyed Dark Reijuu. When this happened, Bagan felt the pain brought about by his demon's destruction, since it was a piece of him. And now that it was destroyed, it would take even longer for him to regain his strength, since the power he provided had been destroyed. But soon enough, Bagan settled from what happened to analyze the situation. After that fight, Bagan could sense that Godzilla's power had grown weak from using so much power. And since he could sense Godzilla leaving, it meant two things: one, he actually believed that by destroying Dark Reijuu he had stopped Bagan entirely, and two, he was looking for some manner of sustenance to replenish himself. And Bagan sensed that it was taking Senior in the direction of a human city. Bringing a devilish grin to his face at the idea of the amount of destruction which may come once Godzilla reaches that city.
But what really sold it for Bagan was something he had almost forgotten about. Something which happened to Godzilla as Dark Reijuu died. He noticed it when he sensed Godzilla in pain for a brief moment before fatigue caught up to him, but he didn't know for sure what it was at first. But he soon began piecing together something truly...terrible which involved the mutated saurian. Something Bagan knew might serve him well in the future at some point. But just as Bagan continued thinking, three shadows began forming right in front of him, revealing themselves to be the Aspects, though they appeared a little worse for wear. Though Godzilla destroyed them, the truth was that because they were a part of Bagan, they could not be destroyed by any normal means, and could probably only be destroyed when Bagan dies. Unlikely as it may be. Either way, they then presented themsleves to the dark god, bowing down while lowering their heads in shame over what happened.
"Please forgive us master. We have failed to destroy the kaiju as you desired, and he has escaped. Worse, he has proven to be a greater threat than you imagined. He may be a greater danger to your plans than anticipated." They said, once again in unison.
Bagan simply looked down upon them, as if he were only half interested in what they said. He then spoke in his deep, demonic voice with a rather knowing tone.
"Yes, indeed. The kaiju has power greater than anything i could have imagined. If anything, it could've served to help me regain my power much sooner than hoped. But while your failure is... disappointing, it matters little at this point."
The Aspects then raised their heads up, and gave a look of honest confusion over what they heard. But they said nothing as Bagan continued speaking.
"As intuitive as he appeared, it's quite possible he doesn't know everything that is happening. He believes that by destroying you, he has actually stopped my eventual return. But he is completely mistaken. However, this means that he will no longer seek me out, at least unless he senses when my power returns to me. Though by then it'll be far too late, and he will be crushed with the rest of this miserable world. Also, there's the fact that he has been drained of energy because of his fight with you. Even as i speak, he goes to one of the human's cities to find something to sustain him. And in his state, the chances of either one of them destroying the other is probable, though i imagine that the humans may find a way to trap him instead. Which i think is even more beneficial to my plans."
The Aspects grew confused again after hearing that statement, and this time felt the need to ask something.
"How exactly would that be beneficial, my lord, if this kaiju is so dangerous? Would it not be better if it were to die somehow?"
"Ah, but why destroy what i can eventually use?"
The aspects just turned to each other, a confused look once more appearing on their faces, Noticing this, Bagan once again elaborated on his meaning.
"Though it didn't occur to me until recently, i made quite the useful discovery: during the explosion he caused in the fight, Godzilla unintentionally absorbed some of my essence into himself. Which means that a part of me now lies within him. And soon enough, i will use it to my advantage. After all, i know the divine moths are still alive. Only resting in a long slumber. Meaning that someday, they will awaken again. And i am certain that they will attempt to thwart my return, as they always seem to do. But with a certain monster of immeasurable power under my thrall, they will not stand a chance. And though it may take time, the essence will grow strong as time flies, and as it festers in his mind. And soon enough, i will have a force of incredible power to control, and serve as my herald of destruction. After all, it's foolish to think that one such as i can ever be beaten by those lesser than i. For i am death incarnate. The unmaker of worlds. And like death itself, i shall never be stopped, and my arrival is inevitable. My time will come."
He then gave a wide, open mouthed grin of a devilish variety, showing his fangs and teeth in their ferocious glory. At the same time, his eyes glowed crimson red, as he eagerly awaited for his return to power. And though it may take time, while along the way, mutants rise, machines are made, sons of blood and by name are brought about, as a king dies, and his heir takes his place, as demons of Space and earth itself arise, as friendships with both human and kaiju forms, Final wars are raged, and factions are formed. Eventually, it leads to a climactic clash of brothers, and a decision which could have very well doomed the lives of earth's guardians.
Meanwhile, in a world beyond: a powerful, but benign entity stirred from what appeared to be a deep meditation. Though her form was hidden, it was clear that this being was Equine in appearance, but bearing a massive horn like a unicorn. Yet its entire being radiated with mystical energy, the likes of which few have ever seen before. And this magic was the embodiment of Harmony itself: one of the forces of the cosmos itself. And in her world, Harmony was strong, and peace was at its peak. All was well.
Until she sensed some dark presence stirring.
The moment she felt it, she began looking through what appeared to be many windows, visualizing a world filled with many different beings: Pegasi, Unicorns, and just ordinary Earth Ponies. Numerous images like these swiftly moved through a large, celestial expansion of space, like a nexus, as she searched for the source of this dreaded feeling she sensed.
"It seems to be nowhere in Equestria. But i know that i sensed something terrible. Some great evil never before seen."
When her search proved fruitless, she ceased looking through the images, and made them vanish. All except one. One which showed the image of a lavender-furred Alicorn, along with five other mares, and a baby Dragon sitting in a library, enjoying each others company. Though there seemed to not be much to this group: the fate of all Equestria rested in their hooves. And Harmony itself knew this already.
"I only pray they are capable of withstanding what i fear is coming. Whatever it is: it something terrible that is about to transpire. And it will be in Equestria. Soon."
